Here, from American Heritage, is the human, vital story of America's beginnings - from the journeys of early explorers and the founding of the Plymouth and Jamestown colonies to the French and Indian Wars and victory in the War of Independence.
Very basic review of 284 years of history in 146 pages. This will not hold the interest of a historian but might supply the needs of someone who wants an introduction to this period. I quit reading after the first chapter.
A succinct rendering of the history of early America. A quick read ...well written with many interesting factoids that highlight this great story. Many Americans view the Revolutionary War as something that was inevitable including the outcome. The author dispels the reader of this notion highlighting many significant events in American colonial history that could have turned out differently. The book is just detailed enough to hold one's interest throughout and provides a good overview of the period. I have seen some criticisms that the book covers no new ground ...maybe for people who are active historians ... but this is the kind of book that all Americans interested in how we became a country should read. I enjoyed the book and recommend it.
This book is very well written, and in some ways of very good summation of the early days of our nation. On the other hand, it is very, very heavily slanted in a left-wing, socialist mode. two more right-wing, conservative, capitalist minded man like myself, I found this the only distasteful but sometimes historically inaccurate ie, that the revolution was all about inequality and property rights. Give me a break! It was about the colonies vs. England. A very good book but I'm very left-wing biased one. Ultimately I would say, read it only if you're really a super American history buff.
As an Indian studying in the USA, I would always wonder how significant is American history. That's why I chose this book and I learnt quite a lot about how an entire country was established which is such a great nation now. Sometimes the book became boring with unnecessary details but overall it is okay to get the basics of the way the United States was born.
A decent quick read about the early days of the country. Reminds me of the two hour histories that serve well as an introduction or a review of a subject. Not noteworthy, not bad. Not expensive.
American Heritage does an excellent job of compacting the history into a space that will not require weeks or months to consume. Very readable, fair, entertaining and thorough without being overwhelming in detail. HIGH RECOMMENDATION.
