Tom Taylor's seventeenth year in a small English town is complicated by his passion for an older woman, bizarre misunderstandings with his peers, and comic mishaps with his parents and teachers. First published in 1985 (when I was sixteen), this details a few weeks in the life of confused Sixth Former Tom Taylor, lusting after the new physics teacher – Jonquiil Faulkner – while ignoring girls his age who might be interested in him, while battling it out with Belinda – his woman’s lib mad mum – and babysitting Sarah, for the lovely Liz. I enjoyed this a lot, not least because it’s my era (at around that time, I was planning a novel about ‘Eddie, the Investigator Of Life’), but also because Oldham captures the confusion, odd ideas, jealousy and complete detachment from reality of that age. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would very much recommend it.
