15-year-old Tom runs away from reform school after spending four months thee for a crime he ws only partially responsible for. His effort to protect his friend from blame has only made it harder on himself. If he can only talk to Buddy, Tom is sure they can make up a "story" to explain the accident and Tom can avoid spending more years in reform school. Tom's younger sister and a new friend help Tom when he realizes that Buddy won't. The perils, anguish, and horror of a few thoughtless moments are described graphically and sympathetically. Grades 5+
