A new generation with mind powers gets drawn into a conspiracy of controlling minds, international espionage and murder in this thrilling second novel of the Perceivers series. Michael — now part of an elite group of telepaths called perceivers — works with the police to look into the minds of criminals. But when the thoughts of a suicide bomber reveal his mind was programmed by an outside force, Michael suspects the work of a rogue perceiver. Going undercover to investigate, Michael discovers a deadly experiment which sends him on a lone mission to save his father and protect the perceivers’ secrets, while testing his powers to the limit. A page-turning thriller which mixes action and science fiction with the forging of new friendships and the troubles of Michael’s past, Mind Control makes an exciting, unputdownable read.
The author has built and intriguing world - not that much different from our own. And the H - Michael is a likeable and intelligent teenager - and yes, he comes with all the teenage baggage and idiosyncrasies.
As far as YA goes this is fairly angst free and I'm thoroughly enjoying the adventures and action as it unfolds in these stories.
This series definitely goes on my to be read list.
This was an intense story full of action that pushed the plot ahead quickly. There were new characters and a couple of older characters. All grew and I enjoyed the journey. I look forward to the next one and I am hoping we see more of all the characters we met here. I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I received a free copy of this book for an honest review. Now, let's get to it!
I was excited for this book after reading the first in the series. I was looking forward to spending time with these characters, so you can imagine my glee when Killick reached out. The story picks up about two years after the conclusion of the first book, with our mc, Michael working with the government, perceiving suspects for the police. The opening scene of him perceiving a suspected terrorist was a great way to dive back into the world that Killick crafted in Mind Secrets. That whole sequence was great.
As stated before, Michael's working for the government and we get to see where he and the others (perceivers like him) live. This allows for the introduction of new characters, and how the perceivers and norms in authority interact, at least for a moment. It seems tensions are still high between perceivers and norms. I do like the few friends that Michael has, Alex and Pauline; they offer great personalities for him to bounce off of. Killick is great with creating characters you can bring yourself to care about.
The main mystery(ies?) of this one is an engaging one. While trying to piece together clues and gather evidence, Michael finds himself in more than one right spot, and I frequently found my self on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating how he would get out of his various predicaments, and what would come next. The atmosphere of mystery and intrigue is strong with this one.
The pacing of the story is a steady one. It picks up around halfway through and stays high-stakes throughout most of the rest of the book. The characters are fresh and entertaining, the relationships believable, and the powers awesome. I had a great time reading this one. I would definitely recommend it.
I am a self-admitted book worm, and I have been the majority of my life. I have recently become a huge fan of suspenseful YA novels. The majority of the YA novels that I read are very science fiction leaning. Because of this, I was very excited to get a chance to review this book. Here are my thoughts on the second installment of the “Perceivers” series.
Pros: This was an amazing follow up to Mind Secrets. Just like in Mind Secrets, Mind Control has very well developed characters. Also like Mind Secrets, this book will definitely have you on the edge of your seat. This book picks up two years after Mind Secrets, and I was honestly a bit surprised (in a good way) how Michael has progressed in his skill throughout the book. I am anxiously anticipating the next book in the series.
Cons: I was disappointed that many of the characters that I had become invested in in the first book were not in the second.
I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Like I stated before, there is a great deal of suspense in the book that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I definitely recommend this book. I'm excited to see what comes next. I received a pre-release copy of this book from the author at no charge to me in exchange for an honest review.
I received this book as a review copy for free, in return for an honest review. Michael is back and now working for the government, along with several other perceiver teenagers. He has a long way to go until he can find his place, as a perceiver, in the adult world, but his hard work may just pay off. Michael is teamed up with the police force, perceiving criminals for intent, and he soon stumbles upon an anomaly that only he can perceive. He uses his innate bravery and the close group of friends he has accumulated to track and perceive a group of terrorists. He doesn’t stop, even when his life is threatened by a boy with skills that are beyond even the most powerful perceivers. This book is action packed and isn’t hindered by the usual teen angst. Michael is a character who tries to do the right thing, even if that means going against authorities, and his strength brings a realistic and vibrant essence to his character. As with the first book in the series, this is not just for teenagers. I thoroughly enjoyed the pace and storyline, and found it well-written and compelling. I can’t wait for the third book to come out.
Michael (Ransom) Sanderson, having recently regained his powers of perception, is now working for the Metropolitan Police. Despite the Perciever laws being passed, England still harbors distrust and discrimination against teenage percievers, and the country is out for blood against Michael's father for creating the "epidemic." Poor Michael can only watch as his father is on trial for his crimes against humanity...
What does all this have to do with Victor Rublev, dying in his hospital room of radiation poisoning? And where do all the teenage "norms" fit in, their minds blank, as if they're being controlled by someone (or something)? Can Michael find the answers in time to solve his case, and save himself and those he cares most about?
I seriously love this series! The characters are so well thought out, and the plot left me guessing right until the very end. I was more than happy to review this book, even dropping others on my "to-do" list for it! I am so glad to continue having the opportunity to read this series, and you will not be disappointed, either!
Once again an interesting and enjoyable read - but I had some of the same frustrations I felt with the first book. The concept of teens with telepathic powers is well expanded fighting off an international conspiracy with some interesting new powers thrown into the mix. The side story showing the relationship between Michael and his father is probably the strongest part of the book. Whilst the central plot is revealed very well, it has a somewhat disappointing conclusion - it felt like a potentially interesting new villain was discarded a little too easily in a out of place deus ex moment. But my frustration is how the book continues to fail to address the central conflict between 'norms' and perceivers. Michael happily rummages through the heads of almost everyone, paying only lip-service to notions of privacy. And again 'norms' are really only seen as irrational is their discomfort towards perceivers. It all feels a little one sided. However the series continues to grow in interesting directions, and I look forward to starting the next one soon.
The continuing story of a young man born different yet finding others like him. On their journey they find distrust, hatred and fear. Through it all in trying to be helpful they are not taken seriously other than to be threats. some truth are harder to grasp as they fight an unknown killing others. One of their own who slipped through the cracks. This journey however my cost their lives if they can't find a way out. Really loved this book. It is well written and keep you on your toes; you just never know what is going to happen with the characters. highly recommended series and I can't wait for the next book. Jane keeps you on edge with the twists in this tale of young adults trying to find their way in a world that doesn't want them. this book will have you engaged so much in finding the answers you won't put it down. **ARC for honest review
I have found a new favorite author! Jane Killick has created characters and a world that is fresh and original. This second book in the series was every bit as well written and engrossing as the first. I really liked the new characters that are added, while keeping some of the old ones as well. This action-packed, fast paced storyline never seemed to stop moving forward. The characters are so well-developed you feel happy, sad, and mad as the story moves forward. You cannot help but take sides of who is good and bad, yet there is nothing at all predictable. So many twists and turns and surprises that you are never bored. I cannot wait for the 3rd book to come out! Ms. Killick has managed to build a world that I want to delve into book after book after book. Great read.
This book had me on the edge of my seat! I enjoyed this book and so far I love this series. I loved the first book and this book is just as good. It did not disappoint me at all. I love the characters and I can't wait for the next book in the series. I was guessing the whole time in this book and that makes it fun for me. I can't wait for more! * I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*
Good to great book and series only reason not 5 stars is as an American the British slang etc throws me as I am sure any non native reader would have an issue with. it's not a knock on author or book just on my ability to correctly understand somethings. Also makes me wish I would have been able to make one of my family's several trips to England and Scotland as that is my ancestry, but I was never able to. Great book and series and looking forward to starting the 3rd book now.
