I went to this book expecting a mixture of practical examples and theory explanations of what Elastic Stack is, how does it work and what problems can it solve in my real life job scenarios, but, in the end, I didn’t come out of it fully satisfied.

The book offers very detailed tutorials on how to install and configure the main components on two Unix systems - CentOs and Ubuntu - which can be easily followed by any person despite their Linux knowledge. Sometimes it gets even too detailed, for example, I don’t think we need to know what is the output of the yum or the apt-get commands everytime they are ran.
Even though the tutorial follows a logic sequence of steps, I think it would be worth another review from the author. Useful commands such as the logstash configuration checker (I don't remember the command in detail) is only referenced in the middle of the book. Why wasn’t it refered in the first times we had to create the configuration files?

I was able to get the two environments running on my systems with no problems but, after all, I didn't learn much about them. Concepts like ‘indexes’, for example, appear without great explanations, and overall we are left with no much guidelines to help us apply or extend the book instructions to different scenarios.
It is true that the selling point of the book is its practical aspects but I am left wondering: if I can find the exact same content on the Internet, why would I spend money on this book?

After finished my reading, I contacted the author and we discussed the aforementioned points. He was very receptive and told me that he is already working on a enhanced version and in a blog that he will be updating with more tips and information about the Elastic Search Stack, which is great!

I was given a copy of this book by Reader House, in exchange for an honest review. I'm not exactly sure what I was given, since I'm completely computer illiterate. But the author was very detailed in his examples and I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me would find this book helpful.
