Yet again I am left speechless after reading this authors work. I said it before, and I will say it again, Abbie Roads has the something special that takes her from being a good author to a spectacular one. Hunt the Dawn went above and beyond my expectation and amazed me with how well the mix of paranormal, suspense, thriller, and romance could all come together.

Evanee Brown has nothing except her car, her job at a rundown diner, and her place at a hotel that also rents rooms by the hour. She wants to leave town and leave behind her dark and painful past but she still has ties to the town and hasn't yet worked up the courage to leave. She immediately regrets that decision one night when her past comes back to haunt her. Well, until Lathaniel Montgomery comes to her rescue that is.

She doesn't know what it is but with Lathan she feels safe for the first time in forever and she doesn't want to leave that feeling. And for Lathan, Evanee makes him feel protected and while around her, his abilities aren't as out of control as usual. But being together also brings out an ability Evanee didn't know she possessed and now her dreams are becoming way too real.
"You've met your protector."

My heart was absolutely breaking for these characters during some parts of this book and I loved that I felt such a strong connection to both of them. Reading about Lathan and Evanee felt like I was in a dream and watching everything that was going on. I honestly don't even think I can fully describe what this reading experience was like because this book truly did suck me in and took me for one crazy ride.

The story was dark and a little twisted but also amazingly sweet and romantic. I will never know how Abbie was able to pull off mixing two very different things together and put them in the same book all while having it make sense. Sure suspense and romance goes together a lot, but this was more than that. It was raw and powerful and so intriguing I never wanted it to end.

I loved the mix of the paranormal in this story and it definitely added the uniqueness to it. Lathan's ability to smell memories was something I've never read about before and it was fun to have something new to explore. I found Lathan very captivating and just when I thought I knew all there was to know about him I would be proved wrong by another secret popping up. There wasn't even just one thing about him that made me like his character so much, it was just him as a whole.

Evanee, for me, was a good character but I did find myself wishing that I knew more about her. I liked that she was strong and didn't run when things got weird with Lathan and his abilities. The fact that she stuck around made me like her, but as previously stated, I did want to know more about her and her past. Though how she was in the present and how she reacted to everything going on is what drew me to her character.

Bottom line, Hunt the Dawn is gripping and gritty, and something you need to read. Lathan and Evanee will grab on to your heart and not let go until the very last page, and it is the best reading experience I've had all year. It was like I felt everything they felt, and even the moments I thought my heart would actually break were worth it. Even with feeling like I needed more information on Evanee, I'm giving this book five stars. It's just that good.

I STEPPED OUT of my comfort zone and dabbled in the paranormal realm. Although my thought process had to make some adjustments, I enjoyed the unfamiliar ride. It was a dark and suspenseful read, but was also a surprisingly tender romance. I am not sure, but some who are aficionados of this genre might say this one is light on the paranormal and leans more on the thriller/suspense spectrum. Nonetheless, the storyline and relationship between Lathan and Evanee kept me turning the pages.

Did you know you have a scent signature and your own distinct scent of memories? Scents in the air are linked with activities which create the memories. Fascinating, right? Even more fascinating is Lathan Montgomery, an intimidating, yet unique and captivating man, who has the incredible ability to see and feel the memories of individuals through scent. This innate ability comes with an all-consuming, heavy burden. Lathan is a special consultant for the FBI and uses his supreme olfactory senses to bring about resolutions to cold cases. He sees and feels the deepest and darkest memories of those involved in gruesome murders; reliving horrific, brutal scenes of death which constantly overwhelm him and force him to live a solitary life. Lathan SEEKS normalcy. He SEEKS human intimacy. He SEEKS a soulmate. But the authorities SEEK him for assistance in identifying The Strategist, a serial killer still on the loose.

Evanee Brown waitresses at Sweet Buns, located within a popular truck stop. She lives in the rundown, seedy motel behind the restaurant called Morty's. She used to live the life of comfort, but has fallen and fallen hard. She hasn't felt safe in a very long time. Hellish dreams of her past haunt her sleep, and she soon finds the cause of her sleepless nights has shown up front and center in her life again. His name is Junior Malone. Most think he is gorgeous to gaze upon and oozes charm along with a good-natured personality, but, unfortunately for Evanee, she knows better because he is ...... Her Stepbrother. Her Molester. Her Worst Nightmare. Evanee SEEKS safety. She SEEKS courage. She SEEKS a hero. But Junior SEEKS to destroy her.

When Lathan and Evanee's worlds collide, they bring each other the peace, safety and healing they are seeking. A deep love is forged and a bond so profound and beautiful amidst all the darkness surrounding them. Lathan found his soul mate and Evanee found her hero!

If you’ve ever wished you could read someone’s thoughts or memories, have you considered the consequences to yourself? Lathan can read your darkest memories and the pain he endures is brutal, but his gift is a blessing for the FBI in their hunt for a twisted serial killer. Lathan’s gift separates him from humanity’s touch, crowds and feelings and for those who do not know of his gift, he is considered a reclusive eccentric. And then he met Evanee Brown, a girl down on her luck, with the spirit of a fighter, a caring human who has drawn Lathan like a moth to a flame. Seems Evanee also has a gift that could cost her her life, nightmares haunt her, are they more than what they seem? Wasn’t her own childhood nightmare enough?

Feel the joy and heartfelt need in Lathan when he finally finds someone he can touch, someone that quiets the world that is screeching around him. He has vowed to keep Evanee safe, but the dark world they are catapulted into may make that impossible.

Abbie Road’s HUNT THE DAWN the second book of the duology, Fatal Dreams is to paranormal lovers what cherries are to whipped cream. Dark, filled with suspense and twists that almost cause whiplash, this is reading that toys with your mind, pulls on your heartstrings and has you watching the shadows in every corner. The steam is at “high passion” levels as these two find joy in touching and melding together.

Worried about not having a terrifyingly evil villain? No problem, Abbie Roads has you covered as she deftly adds the right amount of gasp-worthy darkness. Both Lathan and Evanee are characters you can genuinely feel for and understand their actions, their attitudes and how their focus always tunnels right towards each other. Get ready for intense entertainment and edge of your seat thrills and chills as Abbie Roads revs up the emotional investment from her readers!

Hunt the Dawn by Abbie Roads

Paranormal romantic suspense thriller. Dark and gritty and oh, that poor heroine!
2nd in the series and can be read as a standalone.
You won't want to put this one down.

Lathan has the ability to smell details beyond the usual ranges. Including memories. He helps the FBI to track down serial killers on cold cases. And oh, this current killer is nasty! Lathan needs to isolate himself from being bombarded by memories from both people and everything they've touched.
Evanee, poor thing, has been sexually abused by her step brother since she was six. She just wants to earn enough money so she can get out of town. But between her step brother and his father, the sheriff, odds are against her.

I don't like to read about sexual assault and would normally have taken away for it in my rating, but this was so well written and horrifying, I cheered when the abuser goes down.

It's a rollercoaster ride from beginning to end.

Sometimes I can only take so much crazysauce and wtfery before I have to tap out. I know, I know, you good folks rely on me to read this shit so you don’t have to, but even I have my limits. I DNF’d Hunt the Dawn, but I did get far enough to share some prime F+ moments with you.

Hunt the Dawn is a romantic suspense novel featuring Lathaniel (yes, yes, that is his actual name) Montgomery, a man who can smell peoples’ memories.

I’m going to pause and let you soak that in. Lathan can smell peoples’ memories.

Smell. Their. Memories.

You see, Lathan had some kind of tragic event happen in his life (I didn’t get far enough to learn what it was) that left him partially deaf but also with an extremely heightened sense of smell. And by extremely heightened I don’t mean identifying all the ingredients in a boiling soup. I mean he can smell emotions, and yes, memories. In fact, when he smells a memory, he relives it–a scent memory or “SM.” As a result, it’s hard for him to be around people.

Oh, and when he’s in the midst of a SM, his eye rolls around in his head uncontrollably.

The left one. In case you were wondering.

So. Yeah.

Lathan goes to some profiling seminar but he can’t make it through the event because the ASL translator is sending him some seriously pornographic SMs. I need to break this down just for my own sanity and understanding: Lathan apparently smelled the interpreter’s memory of having hot sex that morning and then saw it projected on his eyelid.

But just the left one.

Evanee Brown, waitress at a knock-off Hooters. Evanee has just gotten done with work, which sucked. Evanee’s roommate is with a client and Evanee decides to go sleep in her car for awhile. Except she’s accosted by a man named Junior who is also her former rapist. They get into a struggle and Lathan happens to come by on his motorcycle and kicks the shit out of Junior and saves Evanee.

He also notices that he gets no SMs from her.

He takes Evanee back to his cabin where she falls asleep, exhausted, on his couch. When she dreams she goes to a place she calls The White Place, “an endless plateau of white.” Apparently she’s had these dreams before. But then she sees a little girl:

She could only see the side of the girl’s face, but that was enough to see her beauty. She was the kind of child women were jealous of because they knew how stunning she’d be when she matured.

WHO THE FUCK ARE THESE WOMEN?

I have a lot of thoughts when I look at kids, namely “why so sticky?”, “thank god I don’t have one” and “is she going to bite me?” but I’ve NEVER been pissed at kid because I thought she might grow up to be pretty.

You know, Evanee has some serious internalized misogyny going on. She needs to do some reading and maybe talk therapy.

But don’t worry, when the little girl turns her head, her face is ravaged and she’s missing an eye and Evanee freaks out and wakes up.

Lathan comes to see what’s the matter only to FIND EVANEE HOLDING A FUCKING EYEBALL IN HER HAND.

Like, she went to sleep, dreamed about a kid missing an eye, and WOKE UP HOLDING THAT EYE.

And that’s where I stopped. Once Evanee started randomly generating other people’s body parts, I noped the fuck out. I rubbed my face for a little bit, and then I went and ate some Christmas chocolate and didn’t talk to anyone for awhile.

If you have the stamina to finish this book, by all means, let me know if it gets better. I can only handle so much.

I am in an emotional turmoil. Shocked ... no words.

Abbie you got me again! This novel has IT ALL - and a lot more. Sounds confusing? Maybe it does, but after you´ve read it, you´ll understand what I mean. Dark, bloody and cruel scenes as well as some very hot ones – be prepared for everything. This book is the perfect combination of the darkest of humankind with a romantic touch. And when you thought that Race The Darkness was already shocking in some ways then think again – because this one tops it all!

After I´ve read the first book of this duology, I expected something dark, beautiful written and with scenes that go beyond everything you can imagine.

Well, what can I say? She did it again. Don´t know exactly how, but she got me with every sentence, with every page deeper and deeper into an emotional rollercoaster at it’s finest.

 :
Lathan can read the memories of other people. An ability that causes him pain and something he would rather not have. He works for the FBI and lives a lonely life far away from others. The silence of his home is the only comfort he gets in his head. Until the moment he meets Evanee. With her everything changes. Not only that he recognizes in her a troubled soul as well, he also gets fascinated by her. Something about her makes him feel whole and complete.

 :
The easy and light stuff isn´t Abbie Roads´ way and will probably never be. And yet there are some easy and light moments in her novels. She shows what true feelings, true love can look like. What it means to be really one with each other without losing itself. Abbie Roads plays with the darkest parts of a human soul, with fear, with everything a tortured soul and body can give and have.

In Hunt The Dawn the plot is even more cruel. There is child abuse of the cruelest kind, sexual abuse and the rejection of a mother towards her only son. You will see a lot of things you probably don´t like or have trouble with reading. But it is part of the story, part of what her figures are and in combination with the blunt language and her great comparisons she haunts you from the very first line to the last.
Yes, the story becomes darker and yes, it seems unbearable what her figures had to endure at some point in their life or still have to. But the author manages to show all that in a way that you can read it. You will get haunted by it, that´s for sure – if not, you can´t be human.

 :
None of her figures has had an easy life. They all have some sort of pain, bad experiences, troubled childhood or other things that you usually don´t call normal. Her characters, or at least her main ones, are not perfect beauties. Not in a common way – and that is exactly what makes them so perfect, so brilliant in what they are, how they feel, act and think. Yes, they are attractive, her men are all tall guys and her women have something special. And yes, they do fascinate the reader’s eye in every possible way. But it doesn´t feel unreal.

Evanee is a character I didn´t know at first what to think of. On one hand I pictured her as a young woman who has a terrible past and tries to make the best out of her life now. On the other hand I was astonished how naïve, how trusting and how unknowingly she could be.

Lathan is a man, I was curious about. In the first book he has only a few scenes where you could only get a glimpse of him. There he seemed dark, silent and very mysterious. In Hunt The Dawn you get the answers why he reacted the way he did towards Xander. Not because he is arrogant, not remotely, no. He is almost deaf since a terrible incident happened in his childhood. And the reason behind his tattoo is astonishing as much as sad – at least that´s the way how I felt about it.

 :
I was in an emotional turmoil after I had finished it. This novel has left me in a mix of shock, being deeply moved, and with the feeling as if a mountain would lie across my chest. My throat felt like constrict and I needed some time to sort everything out and go back to normal again. Yes, this novel had a deep impact on me; maybe more than Race The Darkness had. Highly recommended.

Hunt the Dawn is the second book in Abbie Roads’, Fatal Dreams series. It can be read as a standalone, although several characters were introduced in the first book.

This book is hard for me to review. There were things I liked about the story, but unfortunately there were also things that I didn’t making rating this book difficult.

Both the hero, Lathan Montgomery, and the heroine, Evanee Brown have unique extrasensory abilities. It was nice to read such a unique take on the paranormal. Lathan also suffers from a hearing impairment and I thought this was handled well by the author. The book was a very fast read and it was well written.

Now to the things that bothered me. The heroine was portrayed as a perpetual victim. To escape sexually abuse by her stepbrother, at age eighteen she found a powerful man to keep her safe from her family in exchange for her favors. But this man lives right in the town where she grew up and her family still lives! Then she feels terribly wronged when she loses his protection and is left destitute after he no longer wants to continue their arrangement. Then after meeting the hero, her fated “protector”, she suffers two more attacks. Another annoyance was the heroine’s childish habits of sticking out her tongue. Maybe it was supposed to be cute, but it just felt out of place and it threw me out of the story every time it happened.

So, what is my final rating? I think I’ll give it a sitting on the fence three stars.

2.75 stars

I ranted the whole time I read Race the Darkness, so it was sort of daredevil of me to even grabbed this following title. Admittedly, I was rather wary when I opened the first chapter. Turned out, I liked this book better than Race the Darkness. Well... sort of.

We met with Lathan Montgomery in the previous book, giving supposedly the help Xander - the hero there - needed. Lathan was born with the ability to read SMs (I interpret it as shared memory) of people just out of proximity and touch. As a child this had driven him wild and seen as possessed. An attack during childhood caused him to loose some of his hearing. All these had him further withdrawn from people and basically only have one close friend, who grew up to be an FBI agent. And Lathan's ability later on had him hired as a special consultant with the FBI.

I'm quite taken with Lathan's character (way more than I did Xander on previous book). He literary isolated himself from the world just to live a normal life. So don't blame me that I fiercely rooted for Gill Garrison when he acted out of concern for his good friend. And therein lay the problem.. for me.

Just like in the first book, the heroine here had ability with dreams. As with previous couple, the connection between Lathan and Evanee was instantaneous, more so with the added shock of the incident that led to that meeting. That Gill didn't easily trust her because of her background - and let's face it, he's an FBI agent, it's in their nature to be suspicious - caused quite a friction between the best friends. Evanee didn't help matter by mocking Gill whenever she had a chance.

On top of these all, Lathan supposedly helped FBI finding a serial killer, which was pictured quite brilliantly killing over 30 people yet still manage to evading law enforcement. Unfortunately, quite a big portion of the storyline was focusing on Evanee's family issue instead.

The mention of a family member gave Evanee away to a cold blooded lunatic had me wonder if there was more beyond some psycho talking (like maybe there's Wiccan ritual at play or something, anything more!). Which of course turned to be a false assumption.

The culmination of everything was pure recklessness, in my opinion. Furthermore, after the whole debacle, it is really unsatisfactory for me that it took others to reach out a hand because our hero was busy feeling sorry for himself.

Well, it seems I ended up ranting after all. But I stick to my earlier account that I liked this one better than the previous book. If nothing else, it was due Gill who sticked by his friend's side no matter what.

In fact, I wouldn't mind at all if there's a twist in the story where Gill could be more than friend to Lathan. Clearly, that's not what happened and he wasn't given much credit on the story. Poor Gill.

Lathan Montgomery can read memories and ferret out deep secrets all from his sense of smell. Brilliant power for a hero! (Although it does have its downside too) Lathan works for the FBI and is hot on the trail of a serial killer. A meeting with Evanee Brown brings change to both their lives. Evanee has strange nightmares that leave her freaking out and everyone—including those in the FBI—doubting her innocence. Her only champion is Lathan.

The themes of abuse, both sexual and mental, might not appeal to some readers. It is a gritty read with memorable characters that have stayed with this reader. I loved Lathan, a tattooed giant who had a rough childhood. His parents don’t support him, and at times, his one best friend doubts him too. Once he and Evanee meet, things change for Lathan, and I enjoyed watching their developing relationship as they deal with Evanee’s past and the serial killer.

This is the second story in the series, but it reads as a standalone.

Hunt the Dawn is a gripping story that grabs the reader by the throat and doesn’t let go until the enthralling conclusion. I highly recommend it.

Loved Every Second!!
Book 2 in the Beautiful Nightmare series, Lathan and Evanee's story is a phenomenal must-read dark romantic thriller!!
Fate brings these two soul mates together who have an amazing instant connection and a bizarre link to a serial killer.
You get a brief and very mysterious peak at Lathan in the first story that left me dying to know more about him. I was not disappointed!! The authors imagination and vivid storytelling grabs you from the first page and does not let go!!

While I am not an eloquent reviewer I have to say WOW! What a story....I absolutely loved it from the first page to the last.

The second book in the Beautiful Nightmare series and it pulls you in until the next thing you know the book is done. The story is about Lathan Montgomery and Evanee Brown who happen to stumble upon each other. I was enthralled with the story line of Lathan's scent memories which he uses to help the FBI with investigations. This can be read as a stand alone even though it is part of a series. You won't miss out by not reading the first book Shattered Dream but I highly recommend reading it seeing how some of the characters from the first book are in the second.

The characters Lathan and Evanee are complex and work well together. They are thrown together when Lathan stumbles upon Evanee in the road. The sexual tension between them is hot and Lathan doesn't know what he should do because he has never dated a woman because of his sensitive scent memories. He gets bombarded with memories from a scent and it gets overwhelming. Will Lathan and Evanee discover each other? Or will the dark forces that are stalking them win!? There are 2 story lines in Broken Dreams both evolving Lathan and Evanee.

On a side note: From Shattered Dreams we learn of a bear totem that only a select few have heard the story about Fearless & Bear. We hear more of the tale in Broken Dreams and it is really interesting. I won't spoil it for you but I'm not like that...

Well written that kept me captivated throughout the whole story. Quite the rollercoaster of a ride with a few triggers. I HIGHLY recommend Broken Dreams! A great story with wonderful characters! I fell in love with Lathan and Evanee's story even with the triggers. You will be cheering both characters on and hoping for a HEA...

HIGHLY recommend!

Terrible...

I said I wasn’t going to read this book after reading Race the Darkness and finding it toooo unbelievable, even for a paranormal. But, I decided to give it a try since there are only the 2 books in the series.

First of all I don’t like authors who pick a pet name for the heroine and that’s all she uses. In the case of Evanee and Lathan he called her “honey” about 160 times. Really? At least in the first book, Race the Darkness, Xander only called Isleen “Babe or Baby” 44 times. (Unfortunately I detest “babe or Baby,” but don’t mind “Honey” near as much. Eventually, she simply became Honey, Evanee was forgotten. Whatever.

I don’t know how I feel about Lathan being able to “smell” what’s on a person’s mind; anger, love, death, lust, fear, cancer and the meds you have to take for it, everything? From everyone around him? That sounds pretty gross. AND I’m not sure how to feel about Evanee having nightmares and having something in her hand when she wakes up (yuck): an eyeball and a wad of hair with a tooth lying on top of it were the first two things she had, both from corpse-y type people she met in her nightmares. And that was just the first 30% of the book.

THEN, Junior comes in and shoots Lathan and jumps Evanee THEN the serial killer The Strategist shows up and takes and unconscious Evanee with him. Sooo, while James (The Strategist) washes all the blood off of her he has his fingers between her legs and decided to beat-off while playing with her unconscious body. EWWW! When she comes to she’s in a bunker with him and she so depressed that Lathan is dead she doesn’t care about anything. Here’s where I had another problem, James picks her up off the bed, takes her into the bathroom, where she proceeds to “empty her bladder” and then HE wiped her! EWWW again. Was that really necessary? And then we had a moment of Stockholm Syndrome when with Evanee when she was rescued. The chances of me ever reading this author again are very slim.

Anyway, I did finish this book but it really didn’t get any better. When I read something stupid or disgusting in a book it’s hard for me to get past it and there was just too much for me to get past in this book.

There was explicit sex and the F-bomb was used 166 times.

As to the narration: Roger Wayne did an excellent job. The men’s voices were all different and all his women’s voices were absolutely perfect.

This is the second book in the Beautiful Nightmare series, but it can be read as a standalone.

Lathan Montgomery has a unique gift where he can read memories through smells and uses this gift to help the FBI find justice for unsolved murders. Lathan is a loner, keeps to himself, and avoids being around people as a way to protect himself from the overload his gift would give him.

Lathan storms out of a presentation and rides off on his motorcycle, as he rounds a bend, he encounters a situation where Evanee Brown, in need of help, flags him down. He rescues Evanee from her tormentor and takes her back to his home. Most people fear him, but Evan feels safe with him. Evan calms Lathan.

When Evanee wakes from a nap, she has something that doesn't belong to her. There are nightmares and then there are Evanee nightmares! The problem is that this is not a one-off that has Lathan befuddled, and Gill, who is Lathan's best friend, not trusting Evanee. Disagreements will pit Lathan and Gill against each other, with neither realizing the danger that lurks close by.

Lathan & Evan are two damaged souls, that once they find one another have the ability to heal each other. Evan shows she is just as much Lathan's protector as he is of her. Another wonderful addition to the Bear & Fearless legend. I enjoyed how Evanee referred to Gill, as Ken Doll, who as a law enforcement agent faced a woman showing her dislike of him by sticking her tongue out which had me laughing out loud. I'm looking forward to Thomas's story!

If you enjoy books with paranormal aspects, you will enjoy this book!

I received a complimentary copy and I have voluntarily read and reviewed this book.

Let me start by saying that while this is the second book in the series, you do not need to read the first book in the series to understand it. It is completely stand alone, but do yourself a favor and read the first anyway. You will be glad you did!

Abbie Roads is not afraid to deal in some very dark subject matter, and she has a very thorough grasp on what paranormal romance means. I wasn't sure that after reading the first book that she could top it, but oh how she did! I honestly believe this one to be even better. It's sickly twisted, darkly psychological, and sexy.

The chemistry between the main characters, Evanee and Latham is every bit as strong as that of their predecessors. I loved the storyline and everytime I thought I could put the book down to do something I just could not.

Although the story moves along at a quick pace, the characters are well developed and the world in which they live is extremely well written. So run, don't walk to your nearest booksellers and preorder this gem.

I did receive a early DRC of this title courtesy of Netgalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca and couldn't wait to read and review it. The opinion is solely my own and completely unbiased.

Dark thriller with paranormal elements. Latham was so mysterious in the first book I couldn't wait to read his story. Great suspense, wonderful romance, crazy killer. This book has it all.

He was her moon and stars and night sky. He was her sunshine and green grass. He was her entirety. There was no her without him.

Lathaniel Montgomery one unique person. He has special abilities that make him a great FBI consultant but it also makes him a loaner.

Evane Honey Brown has had a childhood built in nightmares. When Lathan stumbles upon her being attacked one night she sees a savior.

She was feisty and fearless, and he was determined to keep that alive in her.

She discoverers that she has abilities of her own. That put them both in the crosshairs of a serial killer.

On his tattoo. He’d always referred to the piece as the Dark Seduction of Night.

“Who are they?” she asked. “Us. The us that was before . ”

This is one thrilling wild ride. With evil so bad that they give you chills. This amazing author certainly has an imagination like no other. A unusual love story with two lost souls that come together as one.

I need you until the skies turn dark, I need you until the days are done, I need you until everything’s gone, And then I’ll still need you.

I voluntarily received an ARC of Hunt the Dawn by Abbie Roads in exchange for an honest review.

When I sit back and imagine Abbie Roads writing the masterpiece that is Hunt the Dawn, I imagine something similar to the Professor mixing together the chemicals that made the Powerpuff Girls. Except Abbie mixed romance, steamy sex, action, and suspense instead of sugar, spice, everything nice, and chemical X.

Lathan's character grabbed my attention in Race the Darkness and made me want to know more about him and his abilities. Needless to say, I was thrilled to find out that Lathan would be getting his own book in Hunt the Dawn! Once again, Abbie made me fall in love with her characters and despise others. I won't name anyone specific due to potential spoilers, but I'm sure you will feel the same as I do.

If you have already read Race the Darkness, go preorder Hunt the Dawn. If you haven't already started the Fatal Dreams series with Race the Darkness, what are you waiting for?

Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Michael Crichton? Move over—make way for Abbie Roads! Ms. Roads masterfully unravels this thrilling sci-fi tale of horror in Hunt the Dawn. Tormented by his gift, Lathan has self-isolated from all social contact. His gift? Reliving the memories of others through his overdeveloped olfactory senses. Sensory stimuli has long been associated with memories, but Ms. Roads takes it to the next level when she immerses the reader into the psyche of criminal minds through Lathan’s abilities. By chance, or destiny, Lathan is united with Evanee and becomes her self-appointed protector. When Evanee’s dreams turn to nightmares, and the nightmares become tangible, they soon realize that alone they are broken, but together they thrive. This masterpiece By Abbie Roads will surely be the next best seller in its genre.

I couldn’t put down Broken Dreams once I picked it up. I knew Lathan’s story was going to be a good one, he was such a mystery in Dangerous Dreams, as was the bear statue and Lathans fascination with it. When Lathan meets Evanee, everything about his very isolated world is thrown into turmoil. What is it about her that he is drawn to, he can’t help but want to touch her and he touches no one. Evanee has never had an easy life and having her step brother assaulting her in the side of the road is just the icing on the cake when a stranger on a motorcycle comes to her rescue. There is mystery, murder, some childhood trauma that leaves you enraged and of course, love all packed into this book, so sit down and get ready to fall in love with Lathan and Evanee. I already am looking forward to finding out about Thomas in the next book!

This was my first Abbie Roads book and it will not be my last. I read it in one sitting, late into the night when I should have been sleeping. As someone who's long been a fan of shows like Criminal Minds and also romance novels- this seemed like a great book to try. Zero regrets in my decision to read this while losing sleep.

The characters are so intriguing (seriously, mind blowing intrigue). FBI Special Skills Consultant Lathan Montgomery crosses paths when he saves Evanee Brown from an awful situation, instantly placing himself as role of protector in her life. This instant chemistry story, combined with danger at all turns, males for an explosive read.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Another dark thriller romance with a touch of paranormal thrown in for good measure. I officially hate Junior and the Strategist but I am in love with Lathan!

Hunt The Dawn is the second volume in the Fatal Dreams series, and the second book published by the author, but it was finalist for the RWA’s Golden Heart in 2014. We follow Lathan and Evanee, two characters with special powers, on a serial killer’s trail. Unfortunately I had numerous questions about the how and the why of these powers and some weren’t answered, which left me a bit in the dark on some points. What’s more I didn’t really connect with the characters, even if I felt sorry for what they went through.

Evanee and Lathan both had unhappy childhoods. She endured sexual abuses from her stepbrother from the age of five or six years old, and her mother never defended her. He goes on forcing his attentions on her even now that she left the family home, and it’s when he’s assaulting her on a roadside that the hero comes to her rescue for the first time. She has a brother who’s grown apart but we don’t know why, however we’ll learn the reason of the mother’s defection quite later. Her power is to have dreams where she sees victim of the serial killer, and when she wakes up she has in her hand a ‘trophy” belonging to them.

Lathan has a sense of smell extremely developed, to the point of being able to see some memories of the people he meets. That led to big adaptation troubles when he was a kid, and his mother regularly had him committed in psychiatric ward. He works as a FBI consultant on cold cases, but leaves apart from people to avoid olfactory stimulations. He has tattoos, one of those on the cheek, and we learn at a late point that he did them himself as a kind of self-mutilation. As he also has some kind of not-really-explained power with skin-to-skin contact, he’s a virgin, but of course it’s not a problem with the heroine, and his virginity isn’t noticeable during the love scenes, even the first.

Both have an immediate connection explained later with a mythological tale where the characters would have been reincarnated in the couples of the previous volume and this one. So at time they behave oddly especially when they are apart, bordering on hysteria (by the way Lathan’s best friend seems to share my opinion). This link also allows them to heal quickly on condition of maintaining the contact, and when Evanee puts her hand on the tattoo on Lathan’s cheek he can even hear normally, but frankly it’s not a practical position to keep when needed.

As for the plot we have Evanee’s difficulties with her stepbrother, and some snippets of the investigation on the serial killer. Unfortunately we learn more about this killer through the parts in his head than through the investigation. This killer is particularly warped, and if I understood his attraction for the heroine I didn’t believe she could trust him so much in such a few days, even following the special event that happened.

Worth noting that there are crude and/or gory descriptions concerning murders or sexual abuses, so I don’t recommend this novel to sensitive readers. As for me I was quickly more troubled by all the questions I was wondering about and waiting for answers, sometimes in vain.

I wondered what I had gotten into with the first couple of chapters. Then things started making sense to me and I got to know the characters a bit more. Things moved along and it turned into a dark romantic thriller worth reading. Full review soon.

My Review:

Lathaniel Montgomery has such a strange "magic". He can smell memories. That's how he is able to help the FBI solve cold cases. He has such an ultra developed sense of smell, that he can tell whose blood it is when he smells it, he knows who has been somewhere because he smells their scent, and he can view someone's memories from their scent, too. But it's not all fun and games having an over developed sense of smell. Think of it. Bad smells would be overwhelming, and your sense of smell affects your sense of taste. And some things have unexpected smells. To Lathan, fear smells like garlic and the bad guy smells like vanilla. Go figure!

Abbie Roads does a really good job of providing us with the background for Lathan and his "magic". I thought the scene was well done and gave the reader the information they needed to understand his background. It made you very sympathetic to his character knowing all that had happened to him. It also made it easy to dislike his mother.

Now, Evanee Brown was in a bad situation due to lousy relatives, some bad decisions and then bad luck. Your relatives you can't choose, though her mother chose to remarry and provide her with the two worst examples. Then she sets herself up in a situation that she thinks will keep her safe, but it's not long-term and has no retirement plan to speak of. So here she is out on the street basically with no job and no skills. The job she does find isn't one with any upward mobility to speak of. Her roommate situation isn't ideal either.

Evanee hasn't had anything easy, either. And her past seems to have caught up with her at the moment. When Lathan stops to help her, their connection is immediate and deep, but she's so used to people not being permanent or trustworthy that she doesn't expect Lathan to want her to stick around. She tries to leave him when they don't see eye to eye. Good thing for her that he's much more determined than she is. These two have more trouble than one couple should have to handle and they do best when they are together.

Abbie Roads does quite a good job with her story line. She gets the bad guys killed off and the good guys get their happy ending. I don't know what plans Ms. Roads has for this two book series, she seems to have a pretty good start. I would recommend this book and this series to any reader who likes their magic mixed with the couple aspect and romance, but doesn't mind getting bloody.

I was provided this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I am not being compensated in any. All opinions are fully my own.

Wow this second installment of the Beautiful Nightmare Series is phenomenal. I did not think the series could get better than the original book, but I was wrong. This one is my favorite by far. I absolutely loved Lathan and Evanee's story.

The Bear and Fearless have struck again, bringing together Latham and Evanee. When Latham comes to the rescue of Evanee everything is set into motion and their journey begins. They have many obstacles ahead of them as they try and find a serial killer and keep Evanee safe from her step brother.

This book is a non-stop adrenaline rush from the very first chapter. The main characters are perfect for each other and have a very unique and special bond. Latham is a very unusual character with a secret kept tightly under wraps. Evanee is a very damaged and scared woman. She has endeared so much, as has Latham. Their pasts really are what makes them so special.

Overall this book was a fast paced dark thriller. It has danger around every corner. The characters are unique and have very special talents unlike any other. The author has created very unique skill sets and a dangerous world for her characters and their stories. This book is hard to put down and is a very twisted and wicked story. I highly recommend it for all you crime fiction fanatic's.

This book has many triggers that you should be aware of, such as kidnapping, physical and sexual abuse.

I received an ARC from NetGalley for this unbiased review.

4.5 Stars

The day I put down Race the Darkness , I've been waiting to read Hunt the Dawn.

Lathan was introduced in book one of Fatal Dreams, and even though it was just a couple of drive-by mentions, he really intrigued me. He seemed so different from Xander. So stoic, quiet, almost rude - it made me want to know more.

Learning more about Lathan makes everything clear. Where I thought he might be slightly unlikable, he was definitely not. Not in the least. As his story unfolds, the reader can't help but admire how he took what could've been ten bushels full of lemons and turned them into one-hundred gallons of lemonade. Yes, he's that magical and captivating.

Evanee's story starts out desperate and slightly sad. We don't know why right up front, but she's scraping every cent to get by, and not even close to happy with her living and working situation. Things start to unravel, and she falls into Lathan's arms, pretty much literally.

When they come together, it's like puzzle pieces that have been looking for their perfect fit, both in love and in purpose. Things start to fall into place and the serial killer case Lathan is working on seems to be connected to odd health-impairing nightmares that Evanee is having. Not only can she not explain them, it's hard for Lathan and his FBI contact to believe them.

Our hero catches on quick while his old pal is still wary, and that makes for some tense situations. We get to revisit Xander, Isleen, and the OIO, where they try to help make sense of Evanee's dreams, but the best advice they're given is from Xander and Isleen themselves. After all, they've already been through the wars, and know how to spot another couple that are meant to be together as they were.

Lathan and Evanee do their best to navigate the murky waters of their relationship as well as picking apart the mystery that draws them together. In doing so, they discover they can't protect each other from everything, even though there are promises made - but with tenacity and determination, heroes usually win in the end.

I loved this story as much as the first, and I'd read more if Ms. Roads decides to continue with the series. Either way, I'll pick up more of her work in the future. Hunt the Dawn gets 4.5 stars.

Like with Dangerous Dreams, the first book in this series, I'm struggling with how to review this book. But I can tell you that I found it nearly impossible to put down after starting it.

As with book 1, this book has a paranormal angle, with both MCs having their own unique abilities. Evanee's is new, only developing after she meets Lathan. I won't say much about it other than to say it's a dream thing because it's better to experience her talent as it unfolds in the book. I wasnt fully sold on her ability, truth be told. It is a really weird one that sometimes feels more like a plot convenience than anything else. But I loved Lathan's ability and found it plausible. Sure, reading other people's memories by smell is a stretch, but smelling emotions is very synesthesia like and totally convincing.

That said, I do wish Lathan and Evanlee had more "normal" time. We know very very little about Evanlee outside of her horrible past, depressing present, and instalove of Lathan. Does she have talents? Dreams? Does she know what she wants to be when she grows up? I felt distanced from her. I also wanted her to stop sticking out her tongue at Lathan's friend Gill

Lathan is a little more developed in that we know how he uses his ability, and we get a sense that he has at least a few connections, like with his dog and Gill. That said, I'm not sure we ever learned how he met Gill, only that Gill has been the only one there for him. I also think we needed the dog either to play a larger role (tighter bond with Lathan) or to be deleted as a character. And while I adored that he was a virgin, I feel like maybe elements of that trait are on a cutting room floor somewhere. And when he finally is intimate with Evanlee, I needed more.

I think when romances feature MCs with dark or traumatic pasts (content warnings at the end), it's hard to create a clear promise of a better future. We know that trauma stays with a person. If we knew more about Evanlee and Lathan outside of their respective difficulties, it would be easier to believe in that better future.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher and Netgalley. I'm writing this review voluntarily, and it reflects my honest opinion. Thanks!
