She came to America to claim a priceless legacy, but the silver mine that brought Danielle Fleming across the ocean led her to an untamed land where neither her beauty nor her money could not buy safety. From the glittering society of St. Louis to Crazy Horse’s war-torn Dakotas, she followed her destiny, unable to escape the half-breed outlaw who put his lusty brand upon her heart.
There was something about seeing her wearing that necklace that was so right. The sterling silver used to make it had come from a place neither of them had ever been to—taken out of the ground by men whose faces they would never know—heated, melted, forged into shape by hands of strangers. All nameless men, from nameless pasts, who worked the mine—her mine, the Lady Laura.
An excellent but brutal bodice ripper—a fine example of old skool OTT romance. I really liked the spitfire heroine Danielle, but hero Alex is a cruel, callous jerkoff; so far as I’m concerned, his only redeeming moment was murdering the bandit gang who raped Danny (& even then he didn’t believe her story until she had a literal mental breakdown). Alex is the type who never misses a chance to insult, berate, & push away his woman; not only did he treat her like garbage, but he verbally abused & continually believed the worst of everyone else in his life as well. It was always about him; everything was a threat or insult or inconvenience or a plot to undermine…whatever he was doing at the time. I just wanted him to STFU & keel over. 🙄
As I said, I really liked Danny—she was fierce, feisty, & resourceful—but her realization of undying love for Alex was ludicrous given his prior treatment. It’s undeniably Stockholm Syndrome, which I’m loathe to stamp on the Old Skool stories, but in this case it can’t be avoided. Because…damn, girl. 🙈 It says a lot that not only I did prefer alternate beta hero Anton—an emo & aloof pianist in the vein of Franz Liszt—but even Danny’s own half-brother Austin was a better life choice. Poor Austin deserved a better fate. ;___; That’s twice now this author has made me tear up over a side character’s demise—cheers to your sadistic streak toying with my feelz, Nancy Morse. (Sidenote: I maintain that had this been a VC Andrews novel, Austin would’ve been her HEA.)
Anyhoo.
This was a very well-written, wrenching, entertaining ripper, definitely one for my keeper shelf…but I don’t recommend it unless you’re a fan of cruel heroes, or at least find them tolerable character studies.** (I wish I could quote the entire scene when Alex first rapes Danny, as it’s exquisite in its gritty imagery combined with abstract sensuality, but that’s neither here nor there.) I also love how Danny is repeatedly described in terms of mining & ore—melted, molten, fiery, forged; gold, silver, copper, amber. She even wears a silver heart necklace that rests over her pulse point (given to her by Austin, no less 🤍). The symbolism is obvious, but effective.
**I guess she rewrote some of it for digital release? That makes me sad. But if you want to ensure the full-on Silver Lady experience, track down a vintage copy. The cover is better, anyway. ;)
EDIT: Upon reflection, I’m rounding this up to 5 stars. It’s the curse of tough graders that we can’t always identify greatness until we mull things over. :D
