-He obviously loves his subject very much--lots of emotion in this book. Joy, anger, bitterness, pride. Passion. -This book was written in 1986, so some of the history is no longer the prevailing theory. -But that's not what you read this book for. You read it for the extensive quotes from Shakespeare, Beowulf, the Bible, and many other sources. -His recipe for making mead at the end was disappointing. Very modern "micro-brew" for a book that seems to appreciate the ancient so much.
"Mead did not become a rarity because it was inferior to what took its place."
I read this ages ago. I then loaned it out and haven't seen it since. I miss it and want to get another copy. This book contains fascinating historical notes on the making of and drinking of mead. The recipes are historically correct and presented in their original form and language. I drew inspiration to brew meads and metheglyns from the pages of this book. I'm getting back into brewing again and feel like I must get this book back on my shelf...
Great book to learn the history of mead. Result of reading the book is wanting to brew more mead, not a bad thing as it gave me lots of ideas for future brews! Highly recommended!
