As an indie author myself in 2013, I was eager to update my knowledge by reading Jason Matthew's new edition on self publishing, an arena that is constantly changing. Sure enough, he rewarded me with a treasure trove of advice and explanations as well as many valuable links to other experts or examples.

Since I hired a company to format my first novel as well as upload it to Amazon and CreateSpace, I was especially interested in how easy he says it is to save money by doing it yourself. He also informs readers about the benefits each different Ebook Distributor offers an author which made me want to reassess what I've done. He gives readers detailed steps on how to upload their manuscript to each distributor/retailer. Maybe I'll try using Jason's suggestions, when my next novel is completed.

Jason presents a reasonable and balanced strategy for marketing book(s) on social media, emphasizing offering topics, ideas or articles you are genuinely interested in or passionate about. This way readers/followers get to know the "real you" and gain something valuable or interesting when reading your blog posts, Facebook entries, etc. Jason also urges authors to avoid a frequent "buy my book" approach on social media. His suggestion to put an author profile "everywhere," even social media sites that I don't visit very often or not at all, was something I hadn't thought of. He believes in "planting seeds" in as many cyber arenas as possible. Jason claims that YouTube is a website with very high traffic so it can be a valuable tool to expand an author's platform. His section on using videos as a marketing tool gave me additional ideas I haven't tried. Also, his suggestions on providing global links and information on my other books at the end of a book, as well as a sample chapter of my upcoming novel, were all very worthwhile ideas too.

Overall, this is a short book that can be read sequentially or as separate chapters in order to hone in on particular topics. It definitely gave me a refresher course on important details I can implement that can create added sales. I was given his book in exchange for an honest review, and I've read other books on this topic but this one stands out as very timely, detailed, practical and easy to understand. I will keep it in my personal library so I can refer to it often in the future.

When I was new to e-publishing Jason Matthews’ earlier guides were an invaluable help. So when I learned he had a new one out and that it contained mostly new information I was immediately interested and bought it.

It was the title that grabbed my attention—Self publish … with Amazon, Apple, Google and other major retailers—because to date I’ve remained exclusively with Amazon but always wondered what was entailed to go with the others.

Now I know.

A misconception I’ve held is that Smashwords is a retailer, like Amazon. It isn’t. It’s so much more. It’s a distributor as well, and distributes to all the major retailers. So by publishing with Smashwords you’re simultaneously publishing with Barnes & Noble, Apple, Kobo etc. This was a big learning curve for me. As was how to go about it.

In this guide Matthews leads us through all aspects of publishing. There’s a lot on promoting, blogging, and the benefits of figuring out what you want to do and starting it early.

There is also valuable information about, but not limited to, print publishing, cover design, editing including beta readers, and getting reviews.

And then there are the step-by-step instructions for formatting books in line with the requirements of the various retailers. As I’ve said, these are the sections that were of most interest to me.

I imagine this will quickly become one of the must-have guides for anyone serious about publishing, promoting and marketing their own books.

Although short, this book really covered a lot of different areas involving self-publishing. From choosing online retailers, to formatting, finding beta readers and editors, and the various different methods on how a book can be marketed.

I liked how it covers the full expanse of self-publishing options, not just focusing on Amazon as the main e-book distributor and instead includes all of the global online retailers, including a couple of print on demand options.

I liked to suggestions on where to find things such as cover designers, beta readers, and editors – these are things I wish I’d known when I first began my publishing journey. It’s very overwhelming for renewal for when they first start out on I definitely recommend this book to beginners and experts alike.

I would have liked if the book had gone into more depth in certain areas such as email marketing, creating Udemy courses, Youtube marketing, etc. Also, I found the chapter on the part on different types of editing a bit misleading. Line editing isn’t usually the most expensive form of editing – developmental editing is. But then again that depends on the editor.

Overall, I do recommend this book and did thoroughly enjoying it. Jason definitely knows his stuff when it comes to self-publishing and any author can learn a lot from him from his books and his courses on Udemy.
