3 Heart Review by Vicki

Oh man…. This book should have been a novella.

This is the continuation of Ian and Billy’s story, that was started in Final Encore. Billy is now a country music star, this book starts off with him winning several awards, and reaching the pinnacle of his career. Unfortunately a photographer catches a photo of them and a tabloid story is released, forcing them out of the closet. This actually causes some good stuff to happen, and made me very happy. I soooo wish the book had ended there! Billy and Ian come out, and live happily ever after. Fade to black. I would have given that story 4.5 hearts and been very satisfied and happy.

Unfortunately it didn’t end there.

So I had mixed feelings about the first book, I liked the story of Billy and Ian, and I loved the additional characters. What I really didn’t like about it was the whole introduction of Buck, the bad guy. That storyline did not work for me at all. I was very unhappy to see Buck brought back in to the story in this book, but in an even worse way. He is vile, and nothing about this worked, I didn’t understand his hatred and over-reaction in the first book, and it’s even worse in this one. I’m trying to avoid spoilers, but it’s hard. The whole second half of this book is totally different from the first half, and I did not like it at all. A bad thing happens, the police are involved, and the coincidences begin. The plot became totally unrealistic and I was over it. I won’t take up time to say what all my issues were, I’ll just say I didn’t like any of it.

But the first half was great!

I would also say there could be some issues with triggers for some people in this story, involving an almost rape. It made me very uncomfortable.

I think if you liked the first book you should read this one as well, it does have a good ending for Billy and Ian. But be warned, you have to get past a bunch of bad stuff first. Or maybe just read the first half and stop there?

I don't know why I read all the series til the end. Usually when I don't like the story or the characters or the writing style I drop them at the very beginning. And yet I read all through the end of this trivial story. I cannot say where I diskliked it more: I didn't click with the pitieous story of Ian - his story is repeated in all three books with a paste & copy system so if at the beginning it was rather "told" and not "shown", in the second chapter or in the third the reader should have expected to being shown the horrorific history behind Ian's escape. But no. Just the same exact words in all three book and an awful experience such as being kicked out family house at 19 years old is just a passing by experience. Billy is a caregiver but there's a slight limit between taking care of a person and being a stalker. And he never has a meltdown, a crisis, a confict nothing. He's a saint. In a world of megalomaniacs musicians. Ok. Let's believe this. And I could go on and on and on about this: all the "crisis" are just put into the book to create a small conflict and thirll to the reader (who is not thrilled at all, at least this reader here) and too easily resolved. No arguing, no fighting between lovers, even the stubborn CEO of the record company who's willing to cover the scandal buying a wife to both of the lovey dovey just outed is easyly convinced buy a rant by Billy. I don't think it goes like that in the real life. Anyway. I read all the three books (maybe because they were on sale on DSP store and I had to profit my purchase) and hated them all. Sorry.

4.5 stars.🌟 Billy and Ian are tottally gorgeous together, they've definitely been through tough times but they're life will test them again (or the author does lol)  The final book in the series is definitely in parr with the other great books in the series. Love doesn't come without dangers certainly applies to these guys. A bad guy reappears and is out for revenge. Brilliantly written book by Mr Cade that i couldn't put down.
Winning the CMAs numerous awards Billy was happy after being on the roads travelling with his manager Ian. They'd hidden there feeling for each other from the public so far but Billy wants that to change.  Together for 5 years but coming out to Nashville and thier record labels might be tough.. but when someone outs them to the media things about to get worse for them in a different way.   I loved this series from book 1 to this one. Highly recommend for love and a little bit of danger.

The first half of this story was fantastic. I wish there were more country stars as brave as Billy! Billy and Ian’s relationship is wonderful. I love the way Ian is willing to take a quiet supporting role for his famous partner, and I love the respect Billy gives Ian. We don’t see many long-term partnerships in m/m romance, so this couple is a special treat.

I love the modern angst-free approach the author takes to the outing of a Nashville star. America is proud of Billy and Ian and even Billy’s Nashville record label ultimately supports him. This is a beautiful, hopeful story for the year America finally legalised gay marriage.

My problems with the story were with the stalking and kidnapping storyline. I haven’t read the first book, but I realise this ties back to the original story. For me, the action sequences were felt like they belonged to another book. I could almost cut the book in half: Billy and Ian come out to America and start a new life / Billy and Ian are hunted by a crazy man with a grudge.

I did like the New Orleans setting for the second half of the book. I loved the wonderful house-porn the author indulges in when Billy and Ian look for a home in New Orleans. Who wouldn’t want an unlimited budget when house hunting in such a wonderful city? Billy’s family is fantastic, as are the new characters they meet in Louisiana.

I loved the first part of this book and I liked the second part. These are great characters and a great central couple.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

After the Final Encore is the sequel to Final Encore (Encore, #1) by Scotty Cade . However, there's enough backstory in this book so it can be read as a standalone, as I did.

Even though this book deals with rather dramatic events, it's written in a quiet, unemotional way that keeps everything rather drama-free. The narration-to-dialogue ratio leans heavily toward narration, often intertwined with character musings. The fact that the viewpoint alternates between Billy, Ian and the villain prevents the narrative style from becoming too "telling", but the writing still feels rather distanced. Which wasn't something I found particularly appealing although it's certainly a matter of taste.

If you're in the mood for some mature storytelling with mostly levelheaded characters who tend to listen to reason, you can't go wrong with this book. It's a well-written and enjoyable read, angst-free and providing a positive, hopeful outlook.

Maybe it was supposed to be a "life flashed before his eyes" thing but repeating entire scenes from the previous book actually felt more like a filler. The author could have at least come up with other scenes, as the couple had been together for years after the scenes she copy and pasted, took place. Surely those wouldn't be the only the ones the guy could think of?!
There is also no trigger warning about sexual assault or for the mention of past childhood sexual abuse.
The story itself is good. Likely I will read more by this author.

Scotty Cade is one of my favorites so I may be biased. I enjoyed this series and read The Final Encore about a year ago. The reason I gave the book a 4 and not a 5 is because he does review a lot of the stuff form previous books. I've read them all and not too long ago so I didn't really need that much review. If you haven't read the others, you won't get lost in this one but I highly recommend any Scotty Cade book.

Billy is now a country music superstar! He and Ian have been together 5 years and it works for them! But then they are outed!
I did not like when Buck was brought back into the picture the way he was. It just didn't fit with the book. Loved all the secondary characters and Billy's parents are the best!

Overall an excessive amount of back story and recapping, including events that happened in the current book.

I'd have loved the first half of the book as a novella, it was that good. The second half? Love Ian and Billy, but it just didn't work for me.
