In this exciting rock-climbing adventure, Kellerhals-Stewart looks at the desire to break barriers and the questionable role of the media in the dangerous pursuits of extreme sports. [Fry Reading Level - 3.4

Extreme Edge is a book written by Heather Kellerhals-Stewart, who was born in Ontario and went to a university. She worked with kids until she published her first book. She then moved to Quadra Island to write books and live a peaceful life. Extreme Edge is about a boy named Jay who is a Professional rock climber who dreams to make it onto to news. He plans to make a dangerous climb known as "The Wall" with no equipment and no climbing gear.
At the beginning Jay was a normal guy with friends who would climb with him on a regular basis. Brad was one of his friends who would be his climbing partner, even though he wasn't very experienced. Another one of his climbing partners was an experienced climber named Katy. Even though Jay is only 16 years old he has a dream of making the news.
Jay creates a plan in secret to climb a rock known as The Wall by himself and with no gear. He doesn't tell anyone because it is extremely dangerous and his parents and friends would stop him before he could make the climb. Brad also makes a plan to do a ski jump that is also very dangerous. As the story progresses Jay becomes less friendly and starts to be disrespectful as he comes closer to climbing The Wall.
At one point Jay has a dream about climbing the wall. Right when he is about to start climbing he wakes up. This is important in the story because The Wall is the most important thing in Jays' life, even though no one else knows about it. Jay then goes on to climb The Wall by himself with no gear. It takes a few hours of intense struggling to get to the top, where he meets Katy, his climbing partner. Katy is confused and mad that he kept it a secret. They climb down together to find a news reporter in a parking lot. Jay hopes that the reporter leaves him alone and asks Katy to stay. This is important because Jay realizes that the climb wasn't worth it. Katy leaves while Jay gets interviewed by a man named Sid. Once Sid finishes, Jay finds Brads truck in the parking lot that he was in. He finds Brad in the truck, who is furious and can't believe Jay. He lets his anger take him over and goes to make the jump he had been planning. Jay and Katy try to stop him, but they were too late and Brad broke his ankle and other parts of his body.
I enjoyed this book because it wasn't too difficult, had some twists and a good ending. I would recommend this to anyone that likes short books or enjoys sports, climbing, or skiing books.

Two friends. Both lead very different lives and live in different environments, but share the love for one sport.

Jay is the best rock climber there is, if he says so himself. He doesn't need any special equipment or anything to protect him since he knows what he is doing. Jay belongs to a very loving family, who can be at times annoying, but only for his safety. He also has the girl of his dreams, who still remains just a friend.

Brad isn't really the best rock climber there is. Being somewhat impulsive, Brad lives with a group of guys who have all accomplished something extreme. Unfortunately, Brad hasn't, and the pressure that the guys put on him makes him only want to accomplish something big even more.

Two friends who are always there for each other, and are now put to the test when one so desperately needs to fit in, even if it means costing him his friendship -- and maybe his life.

EXTREME EDGE can be considered like an Indie film, in a way that no one expects great things to come from it but then in the end it takes their breath away. A novel that stays true to all the angst in the world.
