'The Last Bloom' is a story of Priya, her dreams, aspirations and struggles to fit into her new college life and its politics. Priya was ecstatic, as she was admitted to her dream college. All her visions of adventurous rock climbing trips, long night jollification with bosom friends, class bunking in lieu of movie shows, tasting lip smacking street side delicacies with classmates-a new exciting world would now unfold before her! But college is different from Priya's idyllic dreams. In an environment as opposed to that of school, exposed to an educational system, which is controlled by political unions, will naive Priya be able to survive without any political protection? Caught between the college hero Suvo's charming words and her acrid tussles with conceited college dropout Vivek, will immature Priya be able to differentiate between cajoling false comrades and brutally honest well-wishers? Often degraded by the skittish Shweta and saved by the blunt rebellious Aashi, will Priya be able to identify her friends and stand up for them, against fierce opposition? As Priya undertakes her journey of self-discovery, will she succumb to her deepseated fears and insecurities or will she survive the ultimate test of time?
Poulomi Sengupta is an alumna of IIT Kharagpur. Presently working in Mumbai, she loves her share of kickboxing and a colourful dose of oil painting to brighten the apparently mundane life.
‘The Last Bloom’ is a Young Adult novel of protagonist Priya. Her dreams, aspirations, a determination to bring a change and a struggle to fit into her new college and survive in midst of college politics without favoring any political party despite continues pressure to join and support them by the leaders of the party or ready to face dire consequences.
This novel is written for a cause. It was seen that most talented students from the country emigrate to the developed nations. The novel particularly deals with the present system of education and college environment in Bengal, India.
The story is simple and entertaining. The thoughtful conversations between Priya and her neighbor Vivek give two distinct perspectives of the youth on the current circumstances. This is not a college romance novel if this is what you expect from YA books. The book makes a point to revive the education system and keep or limit politics from the education system. It is a good read with college drama and not many twists and turns but a definite thought provoking.
The Last Bloom is about Priya and her journey of finding herself. She is in college and has always been a straight A student. As she enters Baranpur University for further education her idyllic world is shattered with the totally different and politically active environment.
This book is her crossing into the practical world that awaits us all when seeing through the illusions they have as youngsters. She along with her friends, Ashi, Keya, Anwesha and Renela try to stay above the unions and unrest that mars their education. Sadly it has become a part of the system and the decay is everywhere as they soon find out.
The author has presented a very balanced view of how college life is governed by politics and what an integral part it has become. More so in regional colleges where the National standards are not upheld and politics is the way to securing a good result in exams. Sadly it does not prepare us for the real life. Poulomi Sengupta has deftly highlighted why the education system is failing our students. The sea change from school to college and the lack of guidance for many leads to disaster. Even though there are a few minor errors in grammar in the book but they do not obscure the story and message of the book.
Vivek, her neighbour is another important character that presents the other side of the story – those who got left behind. He has his money to save him yet the students like Uttam, Suvo, Parag, Jeet, Shweta and Swaha present the other side. They are with no money, no family support and a regional or state board of education – all these hinder their progress and many do not even want to learn and grow till it is too late. How each of them matures and venture out into the world, find themselves or not is the crux of the story. The motto of their university is ‘To know is to grow’. Are they able to imbibe this and learn?
The book expresses the angst and troubles, dilemmas and debates of the students very well. However, a bit of proofreading is needed to make is stand out since it has a few typos. I liked the way the author describes people, surroundings and views in the book. She links them so perfectly to the geology that they are studying about. Her smilies were bang on too! Though as a reader who knew nothing of geology this was a bit like a mini-course in geology and rocks.
“I stopped the rheum welling out of my eyes with a vehement effort.”
“I was literally dazed by the volt of vehemence that a thin sugar cane stick like body can throw out.”
“The talcum powder coloured, straw shaped girl, with splintery textured sparse obsidian black waist length hair, nodded in agreement.”
Whenever a reader picks up a book, he adds many expectations to it. I picked up a book of 400 pages on this Sunday and thought of completing it in a day itself. But I had judged it as soon as I picked it up for reading. The title of the book is "The Last Bloom". The cover page of the book has a flower. The book is written by a debutante female writer- Poulomi Sengupta. It is based on a girl's life who has just entered a new college and is struggling to fit in with new environment and extensive level of politics. At first, I thought as the story is based in college, it is going to end up being another love saga somewhere. But the way, author remains focused on her opinion throughout the book is an amazing experience to read.
The writing style of Poulomi Sengupta is amazing. She manages to write in simple language yet display her strength in vocabulary. The book deals with how the politics in college ruins the whole environment and does not let the education win over the personal interest of few people who want to win seats and rule the sector. Author have again and again described how innocent and dedicated students who are in campus just to study and gain knowledge are forced into participating in the politics otherwise bear the blunt of the majority. The fight between the girls is also described in length. How in jealousy and temptation to be more popular and powerful, girls keep fighting among themselves only to ruin each other's personal space and careers.
Authoress have used the backdrop of Bengal to project the whole issue which is quite evident because of the communal and linguistic issue of the state. People are very skilled and talented there but the political and regional issues doesn't let them grow. Author have mentioned how parents and students prefer to continue their education in their mother tongue itself rather than English language and thus keep getting behind in the race of competition in this ever-competitive nation.
The author have also used lot of philosophies in the book which I personally liked a lot. I liked the conversation she had with Vivek most of the times and also liked one particular conversation with her father in the midst of the 2nd half of the book. All the conversations are so enlightening that you want to keep reading them again and again. The characters are very hard to get used to in the beginning but as the story moves ahead, you will be able to remember their names and understand who are with the protagonists and who are against her (Haha!).
Talking about the drawbacks, the book is not edited at all in terms of its length. There wasn't many twists and turns for which author needed 400 pages to narrate the whole story. The over-description of not-so-important scenarios have added to the pages unnecessarily. The book could have been easily completed within 300 pages itself. I also felt that not all characters got defined properly except few like Priya, Aashi, Renela, Keya, Suvo etc. I was also expecting a mind-boggling climax but it happened on a very light note without much sound. Overall, this book is a great attempt considering written by the first time author and the topic chosen. I give it 3.75* out of 5.
The attitude to cross any limit to survive in the ever-changing world is something everyone does not possess. It takes a lot of courage and the will power to accept the change. ‘The Last Bloom’ is a debut novella written by Poulomi Sengupta. The story throws light on the drawbacks of the educations- politics playing a major role in it. The story is set up in a college in Bengal and that adds to the flavor. The book portrays subtle elements of Bengali culture and I liked that a lot.
Priya, the protagonist, is a young, enthusiastic girl who joins the college with high hopes and a desire to graduate with flying colours. But the moment she gets acquainted with the prevailing environment in the college, she is struck dumb. The whole idea of burning the midnight oil and succeeding in life seems like a nine-day wonder to her. Her college reeks of politics and the fancy-free and footloose students bully her way too much. In the process of adjusting to the environment and constantly trying to fit in, she explores the depths of politics and learns how it affects one’s life.
This story depicts the sad truth about the struggle of a girl in this deceitful and fake world. She finds solace in her neighbor, Vivek, who is all ears to her explanations and her ideas. His character comes out alive through the descriptions and that is commendable. However, the frequent philosophical discussions might not be everyone’s cup of tea. The length of the book could have been reduced easily by cutting short some of the descriptions. Also, the cover could have been better. I liked the intriguing title, though. There are editing mistakes and some punctuation errors too.
“There are two types of pain in this world- pain that hurts you and pain that changes you.” This book perfectly describes the latter. The pain of not being able to fit in and be accepted is aptly shown through the story. The students toil day and night, not to study but to change themselves so that they are considered a part of the gang. And this is saddening. It takes patience and the audacity to stand for what you feel is right. The character of Priya has been crafted beautifully and she comes to life after reading first few chapters only.
The narration is simple with the good vocabulary. The flow of the story is in continuum but the climax is dull.
Overall, the authoress has done a great job. Best wishes!
At first, I would like to thanks the author for giving me a chance to read this book. The development of the country always depends on its education. India, a developing country still struggles to achieve the standard literacy rate. But there are some loopholes which are affecting our education system. This book deals with this crucial topic.
Plot summary:
The story is weaved around the protagonist Priya, who is a topper and chooses to join a reputed college, Baranpur University. The college has some rich history and famous alumni and Priya is ready to pick any subject just to take an admission in her dream college.
Priya has studied from the central board and even though she has scored more marks than the state board students but she was given less priority. Priya, a studious girl has a very clear vision to stand first in every semester.
Priya felt it very abnormal when she sees the environment of college is totally different from the school. She has to deal with the ragging, campus politics and unnecessary tantrum thrown by other girls.
The large part of the book is dedicated to the campus politics and its history. How the students after paying hefty fees go into the political group to ignore the studies and just to enjoy the power. And at the end, they don’t have anything in hand.
Apart from this author has also mentioned the loopholes in our education system. There is a vast difference in the syllabus of central and state boards. Even the subjects are different. The vernacular medium students who don’t have knowledge of English make fun of English speaking students and at the end, they face problem to communicate with the other state people.
Priya deals with such kind of classmates. There are various characters in the book which help to develop the story in very interesting manner.
The author Poulomi Sengupta, an alumna of two top institutes in the country (IIT Kharagpur and Jadavpur University)has made a bold attempt to address some of the current issues in the educational system in the country, with genuine concern.
When you genuinely try to do something , you will definitely succeed in your efforts. And that is what the author Poulomi Sengupta has achieved in her first attempt--to bring to the notice of general public the real state of affairs in the colleges and educational institutes all over the country.
The author, through various characters in this novel, brings before the reader very interesting and gripping story with different view points on the state of affairs in the education system in the country.
we all are part of this education system and every one of us can relate to the story in this novel.
The young students who enter IIT's or other similar prestigious institutes toil day and night for getting good ranks but once they enter these institutes they realize that all is not well in these institutes, be it the teaching faculty who are often substandard, the mocking seniors, the peer pressure to bunk the classes etc.
Except very few intelligent and shrewd students who can focus and succeed despite all odds, most of the freshers get disappointed by the general atmosphere in the institutes.
The students in colleges and other higher educational institutes are easy targets for politicians to mobilize masses and new party workers. This is where the politicians find gullible young people and they persuade the youngsters in the name of power and prestige. Most of the the youngsters easily fall prey to the campus politics and spoil their lives by wasting their valuable time on campus politics instead of on studies.
So far none have expressed concern over the state of things in the educational institutes so openly and boldly. So we must appreciate the author for taking up such an important issue for her first novel and single mindedly exposing the flaws in the education system in every single page of this novel.
There are many poignant moments where the protagonist Priya expresses her views on what is good and what is bad, and what needs to be done to make things better.
There is less fiction and more reality in this novel and I would say the author did succeed in her attempt, The subject of this novel is heart-felt feelings of the author on the matter. This novel is a must read by one and all.
Received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Way of Narration and writing was nice. .PLOT - It wasn’t something you’ve never heard of or something you cannot guess.
The story revolves around the protagonist Priya, her dream was to become topper every year. She want to become most popular girl in college. After entering into the college, she found the college environment totally different from the school . It took her time to adjust to it. There was politics, ragging and unnecessary tantrum thrown by other girls. She has to deal with many things. Then there came Suvo, who is the college hero. Love is the elixir that offers you a miraculous escape from the unpalatable reality;love gives no stress,no pain ,no fear.
Priya tried to stay away from the distractions and pay attention towards studies. She fall in love with the books. Nothing made her happy than to have stack of books on the library table which gave her immense happiness and the ocean of knowledge.
The only thing which i felt was that the story is very much elongated, which made the book boring in between.
The Last Bloom by Poulomi Sengupta may be a fictional book but the issues raised in the book related to education system in Bengal, as a focus, are glaringly real and valid. Students especially who doesn't see themselves as politicians are spending enormous time of their college life in pursuing the trivial issues which should otherwise be spend on studying and honing soft skills which will help them in future. She ends the book with a clear message to deviate politics from student life. And if someone at all want to carry out any movement then let it be on some substantial issues. It is must read book. This World is the greatest gymnasium where we come to make ourselves strong ~ Swami Vivekananda. A flower of any arbitrary garden prospers to blossom mesmerizingly before it reaches it’s tipping point; likewise every aspiring and ambitious mind likes to flourish with equivalent education and culture facing all the uncertainties of life .
The `last bloom’ classifies the life of a simplistic yet elegant middle-class girl Priya, who boasts of her dignified primary education which she has experienced since childhood ; with lots of hopes and urge of unfulfilled aspirations she joins the prestigious and sagacious Baranpur university. Meanwhile, to her utter dismay and disappointment she bewilders that most of her fellow classmates do not harmonize with her level of intellect or diligence. As a grave matter of consequence she encounters a lot of tedious , capricious challenges from most of her covetous classmates who many a time feels jealous cum insecure to her level of diligent potency and impartial/unbiased viewpoint .
The story shares an equivocal characteristics of anguish,, animosity, benevolence, camaraderie, déjà vu, fraternity, gullibility , ingenuity, lassitude, maneuver, nonchalance , opulence, pomposity , preposterousness , timidity, ubiquitous presence of underlying truth , covetousness, passion and endurance.
A meticulous observance of all the characters engulfing Priya displays a subtle picture of different personalities whom any self-confident individual adjudges in their day to day life. Let’s have a vivid elaboration of all the characters :
Anwesha: One who tries to be diplomatic by making both ends meet.
Sweta : one who get swayed by emotion, pseudo innocent
Swaha : one who gets influenced easily and has no self- control of feelings
Suvo : power savvy , dispute monger, dicey , leader
Gautam , Tarak ,Jeet : follower, people whose aspirations gets bifurcated due to altercations,
Kailash : a blind-eye party follower, tries to pay attention by giving involuntary/ abusive speech
Mrinmoy : One who loves to speak the truth but fears to face the consequence of it
Ratul : flirtatious , witty
Sthanu : effeminate , spineless
Vivek : ingenious , sarcastic , explorer, one who understands life and its underlying pros and cons.
The crux of the story revolves around political hara-kiri at college campus creating havoc mayhem to the student’s educational system . Beautifully escalates how an aspiring student’s mind gets tear off between participating in pseudo social service and building one’s own career. People say ‘ Time and Tide waits for no one’, yet we anoint time being the biggest excuse of almost every failure or unfulfilled dream. Priya, the main character of Last Bloom faces all the bottlenecks of being a apolitical outspoken student amongst the uncanny political atmosphere.
Here the author has beautifully articulated every notion of a sophomore psychology with a touch of empathy . This book has got all the ingredients of inspiring and igniting a student’s flexible and fluctuating mind . This is quite often adjudged that a person laments of what he /she has missed while thriving for pseudo- political success at the blooming stage of his/her career.
The name ‘Last Bloom’ thus sounds rhythmic with the flow pattern of the story where the flower alike student’s mind gets bloomed with certain insight and intuition while choosing study over pseudo pompous politics.
‘Smell The Cheese Often So You Know When It Is Getting Old’ ~Dr Spencer Johnson. In the book ` The Last Bloom ‘ this cheese plausibly resembles good education, one’s prominent career and in total one’s ubiquitous presence of life and energy. But our own pseudo posthumous glory resists us to accustom to the ever changing - blooming world. . As we all know Charity begins at home~ So this book vindicates a invaluable question ~ Are we hoodwinking our own career and life in the name of pseudo philanthropy? Reading this book will definitely guide a curious mind in following the ethos of success.
Shades of yellow dispersed throughout scarlet petal of the book-cover resembles positivity and knowledge amongst gaga cacophony of college politics which is very common in every college campus . The IIT alumni author tries to play the role of a flamboyant messiah by representing a perfect portrait of how to concentrate on study without diverging one’s focus, surpassing all the undercurrent uncanny tensions which one may experience in his/her serendipitous life.
Priya, a witty girl who belongs to a middle class family with high values gets admission in a college to advance her education. Her motto was simple, do no-nonsense things, focus on the goal (i.e. study), keep her values intact and explore the ocean of knowledge.
She found that most of the students (not all of course) comes to the college with different agenda. They want to live their life fully, there is nothing wrong in that, but without focusing on the main task - study, it is quite undigestable to her. She was not just bookworm, she is intelligent and that's why there is a rise of quesitons in her mind. The best book in the world (arugably) Shrimad Bhagvad Geeta, affectionally called Geeta, is nothing else, but a Question/Answer session between Arjun (aka Arjuna) and Krishna. She have so many questions in her mind like...
How can ragging help juniors to devel respect for the seniors? Why people come to college and don't want to study? Why a place for study has to be a part of politics? Why we consider that government have to do everything for us, why can't we do our basic duties to get fundamental rights?
The book explores a quite less explored arena - the college politics.
Let us face the fact that the majority of the reader base is glued to rom-com books. A few others like mythology retold or thriller fictions. Poulomi Sengupta, an IIT Khagaragpur aluminus, dared to walk on less walked path as debutante author, and it is worth appreciation. She herself is a book reader and have explored Bengali, English and Russian literature. Her command on language is worth mention. She have a fantastic vocabulory.
The philosophical conversations in the book are written very effectively. At the same time, the envornment in a middle class family and the love and affection shared by family members for each other is explored brilliantly by her. We must say we have seen an ordinary Indian family depicted nicely with some realistic conversation after a long (in this book).
The college life is explored by showing all angles. Even the teacher's perspective is taken care of. The Last Bloom sends some hard hitting messages and make you feel that they must be followed. The author's aim was to explore her thoughts about present system and get heard. And she got heard loudly :)
Of course, the book have it's own flows. The beginning of second half gets a little boring and sloppy. The end seems to appear quite unexpectedly.
The book price may be the another factor which should be considered. Especially for Indian audience, the current price (Rs. 375 - Papaerback) is quite high.
However the positives are more than the low points. And it makes the book worth reading. Just remember that it is for adult (to be precise, mentally) readers.
"The Last Bloom" is the story of politics ridden College life in West Bengal. It's the story of an apolitical girl Priya, who thinks that College should be a place just for educational activities and not for any student organisation related political activities. It is also the story of a convent educated girl being caught up among desi, Bengali language educated peers, who make fun of Priya in order to hide their own inferiority complex. There are majorly three angles in the story- student politics influenced by actual state politics which spoils the education system, girls' fights and conspiracies, and Priya's intellectual talk on all these serious matters with Vivek- his neighbor.
The story gives a fairly good insight into the problem of politics in College life. It also throws light on the immaturity of College students in getting entangled into politics just to get along or get accepted. There are two things about this novel though- It has been written from a girl's perspective, and the story revolves around a Bengali background (not to mean that they are bad). There are a few things very well represented in the novel- one of them is the psychological conflict in the mind of the protagonist to find a balance between a modern, outgoing personality and a more grounded, tradition oriented personality. When Priya sees the nature of her classmate Aashi, her thoughts in this direction is worth a read. Her confusion in these matters is made clear by her thought provoking conversations with her neighbour friend Vivek, who later graduates to a more close relationship with her. Vivek has been shown to be more mature guy, who makes Priya realize that she still needs to be more mature and think in more wide, more rational way. The conversations between Priya and Vivek somewhat reminded me of the deep, beautiful conversations of Shantaram and Karla in the novel- "Shantaram". Unfortunately, the Priya-Vivek chemistry doesn't seem to have been explored very well in the novel- may be due to the scope of story which concerns very less with the life of Vivek. Towards the end of novel though, their conversations have been beautifully portrayed. Their relationship forms one key part of the novel.
The College politics has been represented very well. How college elections are fought, how votes are garnered, have been shown. The fight to gain attention, gain prominence is also shown nicely. How much rotten the education system is-mainly due to interference of politics in education- that too has been represented well. The quarrels, the arguments, the race to become topper for some, and just to pass the exam for some other students, these two intrinsic parts of College student life too have been portrayed well. The protagonist describes her several educational trips for Geology related assignments, where there is beautiful descriptions of nature's marvels. The camaraderie and the conversations in those educational outings too give a nice insight into the life of a Geologist student. All in all, a nice novel with a few obvious, but acceptable flaws.
The Last Bloom by Poulomi Sengupta written in creative tones, is filled with passion, sentimentality, fantastic descriptions and the lyricism of the characters. The idyllic atmosphere of the story has characteristics of extraordinary beauty through poetic metaphors and similes that invests the emotions in the mind of the reader through the message it wants to convey.
Priya’s youthful thoughts and aspirations struggle to fit into her new-fangled academy life and its political opinions as all her visions of audacious rock climbing trips, extensive night frescoes with bosom friends, class bunking in lieu of film shows, tasting scrumptious street side delicacies with classmates, would now open out to a new world before her!
In an atmosphere as contrasting to that of school, Priya gets out in the open to a learning structure, which is inhibited by political unions. Priya has to endure as she is wedged between the college hero Suvo's charismatic style and her unpleasant tussles with high and mighty college loafer Vivek.
Over and over again despoiled by the playful Shweta and saved by the frank seditious Aashi, Priya has to recognize her associates and stand up for them in opposition to severe antagonism.
The plot is divided into an aesthetic trend in which stands out the originality of the finale, which is touching and moving but then that is where the touch of the brilliant narrative that overturns all the reader's beliefs and the same basic plot.
A fairy tale that despite its brevity has made me fall in love right away, because I love to find in the books poetic language and full of sensitivity with a plot almost pervaded with emotions that make a young lady, who is the key character and it does put herself in the surrounding nature and the protagonist of this story.
I was very surprised with the very sweet and refined style of writing with its pensive side will push all kinds the reader not to give up reading a wonderful novel, which can teach us a lot. I found the finish really deep and authentic with a sliding style with detailed and sharp descriptions that will get you into the characters, whom we meet in every chapter and know more and more.
This book is an intriguing read, charming and engaging in a feminine style for a truly exemplary and unforgettable pen with a story of various shades of pink and yellow that enters the soul of readers and remains indelible and unique in its kind.
The plot is so exciting that it can be made as a movie, so I hope that there is a transposition to the movies because it really deserves.

Uncertainty is the word that defines life in one word. And who knows that better than Priya. Yes, Priya – the young girl from one of the metropolitan cities of India with a soul full of dreams and lots of promise.
Life was so beautiful when Priya managed to get into the college which she dreamt of getting into since her childhood days. Things looked so good. She used to be a topper in her schooldays, and she aimed to do the same even in her college. But life started to take a turn with the passage of time as she came across different sorts of people in her college.
Priya came across people who have given her the taste of all aspects of the human life. And the narrator proved her mettle in giving an array of characters which any person comes across in real life. This gives the readers an opportunity to connect with the protagonist of the novel which is one of the prime reasons that will keep the readers glued to the paperback.
Yet another aspect of modern India that this book explores is the student politics. The history of India boasts of some memorable student revolutions. But in recent times a lot of things are happening in the colleges and universities in the name of student politics which are subject to a lot of scrutinies. Let’s keep that aside and focus on the great work that the author has done in bringing up such a relevant topic in her novel. Kudos to her for showing the courage of portraying the actual scene behind the screen in the renowned educational institutions.
Now coming to technical aspects of the novel it can be remarked that Poulomi Sengupta has done a great keeping in mind the fact that this is her debut novel. The narrative is nicely paced and not for even once the reader can feel that the storyline is getting dragged. That’s quite an achievement for someone who is trying to establish a strong foothold in this competitive world.
It can be concluded that ‘The Last Bloom’ by Poulomi Sengupta is somewhat a must read for the young generations who are the future of the modern India. Not only that, even folks belonging to any age group should at least once go through this paperback. You may or may not like it. Well, that’s up to the individual who is going through the novel. But none can deny the fact that the author has done a great job in producing the real life experiences in such a gripping plot.
It’s up to you whether you want to get a copy of the 375-page paperback or not. But it is advisable that you should not miss out on an opportunity to go through such a paper pulp fiction which is so different from all those are available in the market. So don’t miss out. You will have only yourself to blame if the shelves run out of stocks shortly.
Authors like Pouloumi Sengupta make us think like yes, there’s so much more to write and ponder about other than Rain and romance. I would like to appreciate author’s effort for taking up such an interesting topic.
You always wish to travel back to the time which you always define as “The Golden Period of your Life” yes; you got me right, I’m talking about the college life. This book had elements to take me back to those days which I was missing since months. The lead character of this book Priya was a strong character weaved perfectly by the author. I would appreciate writer’s describing skills here as the way author kept all the scenes and different details in a sequence that as a reader I never felt out of the pace. I would genuinely like to appreciate author’s writing skills.
Various aspects were taken up by the Author while penning down this interesting tale called “The Last Bloom” as this book talks about different aspects altogether such as Politics, college, difference in environment, different opinion, dreams and aspirations and other struggles which a normal student might face as a part of life.
Language has always been an important medium for us to communicate wherever we want to. Author took up this issue in an interesting manner. How does language affect students in colleges and how problematic it becomes for students to deal with language barriers. I would like to congratulate Author for taking up an issue which is indeed serious but hardly discussed and taken into consideration.
Another positive point I found in the book is, language used by the author is easy going that will make easier for a reader to connect with the story line.
Conclusion:
Books like these need to be promoted for some obvious reasons. This book has all the elements to get a tag of a Best Seller.
Even though this book is written by a debut writer the way description is done, the way out of the box thought process is shown and the way whole story is weaved is truly commendable. I had a great time reading this book and as a reader I loved how this book turned up. I would recommend this book to you if you are fond of reading new and exciting subjects. If you like to read fresh writers and their fresh thoughts, this book deserves to be given a chance.
The Last Bloom is about Priya and her journey of finding herself. She is in college and has always been a straight A student. As she enters Baranpur University for further education her idyllic world is shattered with the totally different and politically active environment.

This is quite interesting book. It deals with the politics that go on in the college campuses and how it affects the lives of the students.
The protagonist, Priya, is a school topper and chooses to join a reputed college. The college boasted of some prominent alumni, and Priya wanted to study only in this college. Such was her wish that she decided to take up any subject that would ensure her admission. Since Priya had studied from the central board, even when she had scored more marks than the state board students, she was given less priority.
The book deals with various aspects of the education industry. How there is vast difference in the syllabus and the course structure of state and central boards. Even the medium of communication that the student studies in make a difference. How the students who had studied in regional language would make fun of those ‘English speaking’ students, but then due to lack of knowlege of any other language, even Hindi, effects their ability to talk to people of other states.
The Last Bloom has a good concept and I would like to appreciate Poulomi for attempting it.
The story revolves around Priya and her struggle to fit into her college life. Like any other individual, she had some aspirations and was pretty excited to join her dream college. However, her expectations are ruined with the politics ridden environment of her college.
However, the book suffers from the lack of editing (over explanations and descriptions). It could have been more grasping with 1/3rd of the pages removed. You can read the complete review at - http://www.anmolrawat.com/the-last-bl...
Priya has enrolled in her dream university and aspires to get quality education. But her expectations are shattered when she experiences that the students are more interested in politics than education. Being one of a handful of students who boycotts the boycott to attend classes, she is sidelined and looked down upon. To talk about the outer beauty, The cover is beautiful but painful. The blurb is really catchy and instantly wants you to start reading this heavy weight book. I am reading this book after a humor book by Divyamaan which talked about college hostel counter strike wars. But this book is a serious students political drama. There are over 51 small chapters. Initial read said that this book will keep you hooked. I did find that some parts were stretched a little but Poulomi Sen Gupta has the magic in her writing style and has a unique way of narration which is super impressive. The book is a story of Priya (the protagonist) , her ambitions and struggles to fit in the college life and college life politics. I loved the way Poulomi presents the character and maturity level of the protagonist and the development. I would definitely want to read more books by this author!
