Much like a Greek siren with the curse of broken-hearted suitors scattered throughout her past, Emalie goes away to college hoping to leave her old habits behind and find real love. To her immense displeasure, her habitual wearing of sunglasses as a means to potential “prey” of her powers proves to be ineffective. Almost immediately, a boy named Quincy sees her blue, beautiful eyes, and as though they are Cupid’s arrows, he is struck with love. But why isn’t he acting crazy with infatuation? To make matters worse, another classmate named Tony kidnaps her for a game with some friends and she must use her eyes to escape the dangerous encounter. The downside to the Tony falls in love with her. Struggling against her feelings of vulnerability and the belief that she is a victim of circumstance unable to influence the plot of her life, she must make a choice. She can either continue a life of captive, posessive love with Tony or take a leap, risk her secrets, and pursue her goal of finding love unsolicited by her cursed eyes.

The best part of this book is the main character realizing she didn't need someone else to save her. She could save herself. No need for white knights on fast steeds here! This princess is her own savior. I appreciated the glimpse that was given into an abusive relationship. I think it brings a very important message to women everywhere. One that we all need to know and understand 100%. There is a wrong kind of love.

Being made to think about how everyone experiences and expresses "love" differently was also a great part of this book. I truly loved that every single person she showed her eyes to had a different response. My favorite was the officer with his fatherly concern and love. Totally not what was expected and completely refreshing. There are so many different types of love and it was wonderful that the author chose to highlight that.

Last but not least, it is soooooo nice to have a clean romance book for once. I appreciate that on a level that can't be expressed.

The first of what promises to be many books by up and coming author Lara Hues, Arrows is a fun and romantic read. Emalie encompasses many of the emotions of college age girls, whether they have super powers or not. Her desires and drives are relatable throughout the novel, and Emalie’s voice as a character is clearly heard. Arrows is a sweet novel focusing on the excitement and complications that come during the search for true love, while still keeping the realities of life and self-complication fresh.

Arrows is a great story that plays out precisely and fluidly how it should.

Hues has this brilliant concept (which instantly drew me in), but she doesn't allow it overwhelm the content of her work. She could have easily branched out and juggled multiple storylines, but she simply doesn't. Instead, she hones in on one specific element: her protagonist. Because, after all, it is her protagonist's story. She has this certain care and consideration for Emalie that is refreshing to see from an author. To not focus on her past, but rather to allow her to move forward and work with what she has, overcoming her own obstacles in her own way. In the book of life, everything is not solved. Some people don't find out why things are the way they are, why they don't know anything about their father or why their mother didn't or couldn't love them the way a mother should or why their eyes look the way they do. And in this book, it's no different for Emalie because she's got her baggage, but she's moving forward with it from the first line on. This type of embrace on life (no matter what it has to throw at you) can be seen at many points in the piece, even in one of the book's most memorable quotes: "To find true love is to find someone who shares your definition of the word." Love itself is not the true endgame for Emalie then, but rather the means to her journey, ultimately sharing a bit of herself (good, bad, sunglasses or no sunglasses) with the person who proves they deserve it just by sharing himself with her as well.

Another thing Hues masters is the lyrics she writes within her story. "Firefly" and "My Blue Moon" are excellent both in the way they relate to the story and stand on their own. Overall, a great read to whisk you away for a couple of hours. It will have you wishing it was longer, but appreciative the author knows how to tell her character's story and unapologetically does so. Would recommend.

Lara Hues’ first book, Arrows, is about college freshman Emalie’s search for true love. Emalie has unusual powers-- which seem to be more a curse than a blessing--that make her relationships with men complicated. As if those complications weren’t enough, Emalie’s powers also cause her to struggle with friendships, trust, and self-worth. Her adventure is filled with mishaps, roommate drama, and even a little danger.
I really enjoyed reading this book! It made me reminisce my college days and all the fun, drama, and complications that I went through. The characters have real personalities that make you say, “I know someone just like that!” Arrows is a fun, quick-paced novel, and though it is geared toward young adults, I think anyone over thirteen will enjoy it.

Emalie has never had anyone truly love her for who she is. Her eyes have the mysterious ability to make men fall in love with her instantly (and only temporarily). Starting college in a new place, she's determined to keep her eyes hidden and find someone to love her, truly love her, for who she. But of course, it's never going to be that easy for her.

This was a cute book. :) And it's always nice to see a clean romance! I loved watching Emalie grow and learn as a person.

It's a quick read. Pick it up if you like sweet romances with a hint of supernatural abilities.

I started this book after putting my kids to bed and it pulled me. The description and story line is a wild and fun ride. It was well after one before I finished the book and went to bed. A late night that was definitely worth it. The book has made me think so much about love and how people show and express their love for others. Definitely the first of many great works for this author. I would recommend this book to anyone.

This was a good read. Pretty simple with intense underlying themes. I really enjoyed the siren magical aspect but then normal little life.

Having gone to high school with the author and her brother I decided to read her book when she told me about it. I found it to be a fun read and enjoyed it very much. The humor in it was similar to my own which had me smiling at parts. It left me with a few questions however but thankfully Lara tells me there will be a sequel.
