Two states are under siege of an unknown strain of meningitis outbreak among children…
Eight highly reputable laboratories are in the race for a potent cure within the shortest time possible...
Of the lot, only IngoSmart is on the threshold of coming up with a deliverable vaccine, but this is so because scientists there are using indigent children kidnapped from the streets as guinea pigs. It is a well kept secret, right up to that night Dr. Adeishi Omini opened the door she mistook for the antigens storage room.
Consequently for Adeishi, her inadvertent discovery has led to the gruesome murder of her boyfriend and set her on the run for her life. What she has discovered hidden in the dark basement mustn’t reach the knowledge of the outside world. IngoSmart’s owner, Morgan Nicholson, has sent killers on her trail and nothing will stand in the way of their finding her.
But another figure deep within has a different plan in mind. Working in synergy with Obed Ringim, an ex-army investigator, the duo are bent on thwarting IngoSmart’s every move concerning the use of children for an unwholesome experiment. But for their plan to work, first, they will have to be quick enough to locate Adeishi and, possibly, her shadow confederate, Mike Ellams, before the wealthy American’s assassins can rid the one major witness of her life.
A pharma thriller set in Africa. What lengths will a drug company go to, to bring a drug for a new strain of meningitis to market? Neighbouring states are crying out for a cure as their children die. But the company take terrible liberties with their experiments including kidnapping children. A conscientious doctor working on the site finds out and the company has to decide how far will they go to stop her getting what they've done into the public domain. A good read and well paced.
This story is a thriller in the truest sense of the word. Early in the story we’re introduced to Adeishi, a scientist who inadvertently discovers the darker side of the company she works for, Ingosmart Pharmaceuticals. This sets her on a dangerous run for survival, where the cost could be death for her, and those closest to her. The author has worked hard to create a story packed with action and packed full of different characters and we are introduced to each; I found it important therefore to pay close attention to the story, so as not to get lost. I’m in admiration of how the author weaved together the lives of each and pushed the story forward. The ending was a little quick for my tastes and at times I found some of the writing would have been easier to read had it been simpler. A great read for those who enjoy a chasing thrilling ride.
This is the story of a murderous criminal enterprise. It takes place in Nigeria, but the people involved are from all over the world. The story rang a number of bells for me, because I’ve done a lot of business in Nigeria and that included some insights into the seamier side of Nigerian business life. Two men tried to kidnap me outside Lagos Airport. I was caught up in a scam in which the police were involved in what amounted to highway robbery. And a company I was visiting conducted prayers before meetings, a display of Christian virtue that didn’t prevent them from trying to defraud my company in a quite blatant way. All of this makes it very easy to believe the theme of the story. The setting is also extremely well done. This author knows his Nigeria – he knows his Lagos – and he makes a very good job of showing it to those who don’t. So why am I not giving it the fourth and fifth stars? Because the author has not really mastered the art of showing us what is in people’s minds instead of telling us about it and, after a while, that begins to grate. Nor could you say that the characters were fully rounded. And finally, some of the word use is badly chosen. The very biggest publishers are no longer editing most of their books, and this book has not been properly edited, and this is a writer who really needs the benefit of good editing. In sum, then: the highest rating possible for the story, but the mark is a little less favourable for the way the story is delivered.
“To Cure!” is a fast-paced thriller that follows a huge cast of characters impacted by the illegal activities of a ruthless pharmaceutical company known as IngoSmart. When Dr. Adeishi Omani stumbles upon a plot to use vagrant children as guinea pigs to test their newly developed meningitis vaccine, her life is put in grave danger, and she must find a way to elude the hit-man IngoSmart has hired to find and kill her.
Benedict’s employment of a plot line standard that is usually found at the center of similar tales runs a well-worn course, however his expansion into the innocents—family members, friends, relatives, and paramours—affected by the hunt for Doctor Omani heightens the sense of drama and urgency to resolve this—and other issues—post-haste.
“To Cure!”’s plot may have been done and done before, but Author Benedict’s characters bring this story to life with colorful nosy neighbors who provide information to law enforcement officials without verifying IDs, bumbling hit men, and rambunctious boys who stumble upon a crime scene when they mischievously skip off to fish in a restricted area teeming with crocodiles and corporate criminals. Benedict tames this tense page-turner’s heightened sense of urgency with bouts of humor and silly situations, resulting in a well-rounded, endearing, and suspenseful thriller that most readers will enjoy.
This is the kind of book that one can read in one seating because it grips the reader right from the beginning. The plot, characters and setting are very authentic. I was caught up in the story to the point where the end came sooner than I wanted. Though fiction, one can see how this would happen in real life. The story clearly depicts what happens when a pharmaceutical company becomes greedy and puts profits over human life, and end up exploiting vulnerable communities for experiments. The corrupt government in this story is fertile ground for this to happen. Fortunately there are principled people in the story like our main character Adeishi who will not allows this to happen. The love story between Adeishi and Mike was a pleasant surprise. Well done.
What a great read! The action scenes lead the reader through territory that's already full of suspense and danger BEFORE the assassins and soldiers arrive. I enjoyed the touch of romance too, and the inclusion of some family themes raised the stakes as characters found themselves in all sort of turmoil. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of this book was the balance between big business and personal values. Read it, and you'll find yourself evaluating the merits of scientific endeavors while enjoying the suspense; a wonderful and unique quality in a thriller.
Adeishi is a scientist newly working for a section of IngoSmart Laboratories. Walking along an unfamiliar corridor in search of the “antigens” storage room, she mistakenly enters through a door that leads down a cellar where she stumbles upon a hideous secret. A fast paced thriller which I have given 4 out of 5 stars after debating whether to give 3 or 4. This book is a very short read so ideal for someone who likes quick reads. I did struggle in the beginning to get into it as was quite confusing. However, once into it the story was very fast paced, interesting and put me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened next. Fantastic where all the characters lives connect today, really enjoyed that. I was slightly disappointed at what I felt was quite a rushed ending but I did enjoy reading the book and would recommend to readers of most genres. xx
