Willie Mae

Rate this book
The 1926 forty-foot cruiser was in need of restoration yet out of all the vessels for sale at the New Orleans antique boat auction that summer of 1972, it was the Willie Mae that’d caught Jim William’s eye. Awarded the winning bid, he never could’ve imagined as he returned to the boat to admire his purchase that it held such an incredible history. A story that’d waited decades to be told. A story that in its entirety; was known only to a few.

Perhaps it was fate, or his chance encounter with Otis Brown. A man who had only come to say a final goodbye to a boat he’d been the captain of for almost thirty years. Realizing the value of Otis’s knowledge with regards to the boat, Jim invites the man on board to discuss its inner workings. Finishing a half hour later, the two men retired to the stern for a relaxing beer yet as they took their respective places on the floor, Jim, now curiously drawn to the boat’s name, inquires with his new friend as to its origin.

Popping the top to his beer with a smile, Otis took a long satisfying swill and then leaned back against the side of the hull. He had never told the story to anyone, but that day as he and Jim sat in the back of the boat and the auction rambled on, he drifted back in time. Back to late August of 1930 and began to tell of how he had come to be the captain of the boat and of the first time he’d met the beautiful young girl it’d been named after... Miss Willie Mae Dawson.

Willie Mae is an unpredictable tale of perseverance, love and betrayal, set during a Depression era Mobile that transports readers back to what many would think of as a simpler time only to reveal that human nature and relationships are eternally complex.

I have so many conflicting feelings about this book. It is an amazing story. Poorly edited. Sexually explicit. The main male character is despicable and yet at times I liked him. Tragic events. Happy ending.
