Excellent book for anyone seeking to be effective in whatever they do. Best quotes, "[Success ] is about living wisely and knowing what you love. It is being able to discern between true values and neurotic cravings" (p. xii), "Be careful what you choose to think, because you will not go higher than your thoughts" (p. 84), and "Even though life can be difficult, heartbreaking, and insane at times, the only way to really succeed is to keep saying 'Yes' to what moves your soul" (p. 349).
The book is wordy and thick. Mostly seems like off the cuff true-ism: listen to your kids, your wife, the people you work with, get off your phone. Be true.
A typical passage: Success Intelligence is about finding the authenticity of each moment. The value of authenticity is that it encourages true authority, i.e., wisdom and inspiration. I recommend, therefore, that in every situation you ask yourself, "What is my true goal here?" and listen.
Mr. Holden boasts about his accomplishments, which is off-putting.
Holden realigns our concepts about success, helps us detach from Western society's concepts thereof, and encourages us to focus on what's really important.
I didn’t gain much here. He opens with a moving, first-person story about his alcoholic father and his traumatic childhood. He ended there, as well. The lessons learned and the honesty shared made me yearn for a memoir. Then he talks about founding The Happiness Project, and I thought that could be a great subject — tell me about that and how you came to dedicate your life to this.
But no, instead he veers into so many disjointed self-help topics it was hard to keep them straight. It was a chore to push through all the details about unhappy executives who have mistaken definitions of success and his own self-promoting references to his consulting services and seminars.
"Ninety per cent of the world's woe comes from people not knowing themselves, their abilities, their frailties, and even their real virtues. Most of us go almost all the way through life as complete strangers to ourselves - so how can we know anyone else?" Sydney J. Harris
"Try Not To Become a Man of Success But Rather Try To Become a Man of Value" Albert Einstein
" Oh God of second chances, and new beginnings, here I am again!" Nany Spielberg
"Man's main task in life is to give birth to himself, to become what he potentially is" -Eric Fromm
A must for the bookshelf. Robert Holden captures the true definition of success, knowing who you are. This definition impacts every single other decision, so this definition is a big deal. I keep leaning further and further into this as I age. Well done Robert!
A good book and there is something to be learned from it. Some of the quotes in the book helped me in a job interview but the frequent mention of God comes to me a little more
