A Daring Masquerade... Nathan Raveneau, son of Andre & Devon (Silver Storm), is known as "The Scapegrace" in Regency London for his rakish exploits and devastating good looks. He is also a sea captain with an estate on Barbados. To gain land near his enemy, Xavier Crowe, Raveneau agrees to act as protector to headstrong Adrienne Beauvisage - and keep her chaste until her 21st birthday. Adrienne is both outraged and intrigued by the man who calls himself Nathan Essex. She knows little of the threats that lurk at the English castle of eccentric Lady Thomasina Harms... or of the daring that Raveneau, in his guise as Nathan Essex, must employ to keep her out of harm's way. A Reckless Abduction...As the powerful attraction between them builds, Nathan is forced to abduct an unwilling Adrienne, boldly spiriting her away to his ship. In a rousing adventure that carries them from Regency England across the sea to magical Barbados, Nathan and Adrienne struggle against a compelling and passionate love while caught in a growing web of danger. Don't miss this enchanting novel that unites the Raveneau and Beauvisage families!

Tropes: age gap (she turns 21 and it's mentioned that he's in his 30's), haters-to-lovers, bodyguard, secret identity, forced proximity, sea voyage to Barbados.
Other notes: - I liked their first encounter. She almost causes a carriage accident with the hero when she tells her coachman to stop the carriage so she can go purchase the most beautiful fan she's ever laid eyes on, which the hero is unhappy about.
- Their parents knew each other, so it was briefly mentioned that they met when they were younger. It was long ago so they didn't recognize each other now that they're older.
- The hero's parents and siblings have their own books.
BARBADOS aka SILVER SEA aka HIS RECKLESS BARGAIN, finally brings together the Raveneau and Beauvisage families. I originally read BARBADOS when it first came out (I still have my paperback copy) and then reread HIS RECKLESS BARGAIN as an ebook. A reckless bargain, indeed. After an annoying encounter with a young lady whose interest in a fan, disturbs traffic, Nathan Raveneau goes to his club, only to run into his father's old friend Nicholai Beauvisage. Nicholai is worried about his daughter Adrienne, who is a little too headstrong for her own good and is getting threats from her former employer. Nathan and Nicholai strike a deal where Nathan will disguise himself as a bodyguard for Adrienne in return for a piece of land on Barbados that Nicholai owns and Nathan has had his eye on. Needless to say, Adrienne was just as annoyed as Nathan was about their first encounter and when they are thrown together, neither is happy.
From Harms Castle, where Adrienne is a paid companion to Lady Thomasina, to the lush island of Barbados, Nathan and Adrienne's relationship goes through many cycles and both characters show growth. While I wasn't as fond of Adrienne in the earlier part of the book, her strength shines through in the latter portion. The descriptions of Barbados are wonderful and I enjoyed the secondary characters. I will say, that as a librarian, Lady Thomasina's book system made me cringe a bit (organizing the library by color and size as opposed to by author), but that was the point, so I chose to be amused instead.
HIS RECKLESS BARGAIN stands alone, but for fans of Cynthia Wright's Rakes and Rebels series, it is nice to hear from old friends. As the next to last of the Raveneau books, it sets up the next one (TEMPEST) very nicely. While there are no cliffhangers, threads of the story become important in the final book. For dedicated readers of Rakes and Rebels, it is gratifying to see the two main families join together, at last. For new readers, it is an excellent incentive to go back and read the earlier titles.
Man, this book drove me nuts. It's supposed to be set in 1818...a time when women from wealthy families were not allowed to wander around alone or take work. No gentleman would . None of this was historically accurate in any way that I could perceive. Adrienne was a nightmare...so stupid. She got better but it took WAY too long for that to happen. I almost DNF'd this at 12% and 26% through the book; had I not paid for it, I would have.
The last half was an OK read but in general, it was too long and frustrating for me to consider reading anything else in the series...
Scribd Couldn't even get through the first 3 chapters. The narrator is absolutely wrong wrong wrong! These are English and French people except for possible one American who lives mostly in Barbados. Yet they are ALL voiced as American blonde bimbos from 1950s comedy films. I thought it might get better but nope. And not just her voice is wrong, of course. Her pronunciation is so terrible I am flabbergasted that she wasn't fired! Who on earth edits these?? Everyone knows that in England the river is TEMS not Thhhames!! And on and on. I am so disappointed because I loved the last one. This is just garbage. Also the premise is not good. Her dad wants protection for her until her 21st birthday only? What after that it's okay if she's raped by these creepy dude who's stalking her and leaving threatening notes? Really? So he hires a bodyguard just for a few months? Does that sound like a reasonable idea? Doesn't to me either unless he's planning to do something about the villain guy in those 4 months I don't see what difference it makes if she gets raped at 20 or 21. This is very disappointing.
Head strong Nathan Raveneau has a run in with independent Adrienne Beauvisage as she runs across the street in front of his carriage on her way to the fan shop. Later in the day Nathan encounters Adrienne's father, a family friend, in the pub. Both men discussing a women that has unsettled them, older gentlemen confides to Nathan that he is worried for his daughters safety. A plan is formed and Nathan has agreed to watch over and protect Adrienne until her twenty-first birthday. Little does Nathan know that the little she cat and Beauvisages' daughter are one in the same. Sparks fly, tempers rage but there is definitely an attraction between the two and they take each other on a merry ride. A very stimulating read with danger, antics and interesting times.
His Reckless Bargain (Rakes & Rebels: \ The Raveneau Family Book 6) Cynthia Wright
This book held a lot of excitement and swell as intrigue. First a mad man is trying to exact nonexistent punishment on The heroine, Adrienne. Her father hires the hero Nathan Revenue to protect Adrienne. She takes a position with a eccentrics elderly lady who wears too much perfume, powdered wigs or turbans. Her son comes for a visit he is a toady. Little dog steals his blue leather glove and the fine begins. The mad man tries to get into house, bedroom with Adrienne with the help from the Son. Nathan and Eddie realize they are fall in love and must escape the madness at the castle with Lady Thomasina and her son. All in all it is a delightful book!!
Full disclosure, I listened to this book on Audible and the narration was good, so it added to my enjoyment of the book. And so the two families are joined... after reading this entire series this summer, I guess I never realized they weren’t joined before this book! I enjoyed the characters of this book - although they seemed kinda random at times. I enjoyed the setting — don’t believe Barbados has ever been in a book I’ve read. I’m off to read... listen to... the final book in the series.
I have been reading the Raveneau and Beauvisage series ever since I found Devon and Andre's story on book bub, and I love them all. That being said, "His Reckless Bargain" is one of my favorite books so far. I loved the Chemistry between Nathan and Adrienne, and loved how alike they are. The constant stubbornness from them both was very entertaining. I couldn't put the book down. I love Cynthia Wright's books and will read them for however long she plans to write them!
I really loved this book. It was completely intriguing from the beginning. Nathan was quite the hero in the story, but has very masculine or manly traits. Adrienne's desire for adventure was very interesting as well. I love how in the back of the book, Cynthia Wright explains the real history behind her fictional characters and plots. Absolutely love that this is true historical fiction and romance.
I listened to the audiobook of this story. Narrator was good. Adrienne needs a protector and her father hires Nathan Raveneau, to do the job in exchange for a piece of land in Barbados. Of course, everyone considers Nathan a rake. He will be in disguise and protect Adrienne, so that land won't go to his enemy. Adrienne is not liking Nathan at all. Can Nathan keep her safe and get the land. Time will tell. I was given a copy of this book by the author for a honest review.
I absolutely loved this story of Nathan Raveneau and Adrienne Beauvisage!! Love how the families are finally united in marriage! It was a great story. It brought back some memories of their parents and how they came to be married couples! I also liked the fact that it took place in a different locale (Barbados)! It brought an exotic element into the story line. It was a nice adventure! Now on to the next one! Enjoy
What a mess Adrienne Beauvisage makes of her life in striving for independence, she doesn't seem to be able to help herself! Thank goodness she is able to trust her gut instincts when it comes to meeting Nathan Raveneau (aka Essex) and that she has a father who loves her so much as to hire a protector for her. I thoroughly enjoyed their journey to Barbados and to love.
Meet fight love become friends and lust marry for convenience off to adventure a new home adversarial adventure confrontations saving lives freeing slaves and somewhere in there a marriage of convenience becomes a lasting love and bountiful future with promise of more adventure
HIS RECKLESS BARGAIN: is beyond a five star read ! Cynthia Wright really knows what an historical romance is about. This is great read, Nathan is ever honorable, Adrienne is ever feisty and the villains are evil. Characters like Orchid and Lady Thomasina are interesting. Love conquers. I have enjoyed each book of this series.
His Reckless Bargain is an entertaining romance about a man who agrees to protect a spirited lady in a spur of the moment deal. The story is lots of fun even though the romantic pair have more strife in their relationship then I would have liked. So often the couples just aren’t really all that compatible in these stories..
I've been binge reading this series. There's an inherent problem with binge reading. After enough books they all start to sound the same and you start to loose interest. I was going to launch into Tempest, but I think I'll wait si I can do this suthor justice and enjoy it more.
I am reading your books and love these stories. It is almost exciting as reading about my husband’s ancestors and mine too. I was born in CA and he in TN but our families came from a lot of the same places.
I enjoyed this book, but the one thing that I could not get past is the switching point of view, without warning, from one sentence to the next. It was very distracting and disconcerting. I would have enjoyed this a lot more if the there was a more conventional approach to the point of view issue.
The more I read in this series by Cynthia Wright the better I like the stories. The character seem to be real and human, and ad the intrigue and suspense and it makes a great story. I would recommend this book or any in this series.
This is another great story by Cynthia Wright. It's a wonderful tale of a woman seeking independence from family. This quest leads to greater adventure and love.
I HAD A HARD TIME RATING THIS BOOK BECAUSE I WANTED TO GIVE IT A 3.8 STARS WHICH IS QUITE ODD. WHY? BECAUSE....
As much as I enjoyed the story, it wasn't a joyride or anything but rather it comes of as SLOW and some parts were UNNECESSARY and also the fact that the characters can be quite so stubborn in their ways it annoys you.
OUR HERO is the delightful rogue Nathan whom you already know from the blurb that he is captain of his own ship. Because of his family's friendship with Adrienne's family, he concedes to watch over her but of course that is not his motive, it is to garner a certain land from her father once he manages to protect her until her 21st birthday which is in 2 months. Mind you they both got off on a bad start and their arguments were LOL funny. That was the main attraction until it bled into unnecessary boredom. It is like the author dangles a bait in front of you and take it away with small talk, making you anticipate the good stuff. Not that great a tactic because the fillers were a bore.
OUR HEROINE is superb and I swear in all my 10 years of reading, I have never encountered a HR heroine who comes on so strongly to the hero.Is it because she's French? Because they are often more de riguerthan the British. But she's a breath of fresh air and quite spoilt but I guess Nathan deserved her ire with his sullenness. I enjoyed how Adrienne loves wholeheartedly and that she is a strong heroine who doesnt need a man to rescue her, which of course is moot because her father hires a protector. But you get what I mean.
OVERALL this story was okay. I expected heart-wrenching bla bla bla but there was maybe just a few heart tugging parts where the hero was brutal with his words. And of course there is the ex-lover ish - Eloise. Honestly I don't see what Nathan sees in Eloise because she's like the total opposite of Adrienne and I am glad Nathan realised that fact. He couldnt have truly LIVED had he married Eloise because she's such a demure mouse. I definitely would come back to this author for more.
Headstrong Adrienne Beauvisage insists on maintaining independence by taking employment as companion to Lady Thomasina Harms after her last position as governess ends abruptly when she has to lock her charges father in a closet at knifepoint to escape his advances. In light of continuous threats from her spurned former employer, her father hires notorious rake Nathan Raveneau to protect Adrienne and keep her chaste until her 21st birthday. In return, Nathan will receive a plot of land in Barbados he has always coveted that will be key in thwarting his greatest enemy. Will Nathan be able to protect Adrienne when she resents his very presence? Or is that resentment an attraction that will boil over an threaten all of Nathan's hopes and dreams for his Barbados plantation if they act on that attraction? Is land and stopping one's enemy worth sacrificing one's chance at love?
This book has plenty of action and lots of heat and passion. The opening chapters are a little slow, but they do set up the story well, and one it picks up speed, the plot is very compelling. I actually won this audiobook in a contest, so although I have read other books by Cynthia Wright that have been included in anthologies, this is my first Raveneau novel (I still had no trouble following the plot), but now I am looking forward to going back and reading the others.
Adrienne and Nathan were wonderful characters, both wanting adventure in life, rather than marriage. Both their parents had met through adventurous circumstances, made love matches and then, over time, had "settled down" into relatively "boring" lives. So, Adrienne and Nathan each sought independence and adventure. Over the course of this book, they fall into one adventure after another, finally learning that marriage may well be the best adventure of all.
Silver Sea f/k/a Barbados is an epic tale of drama, adventure and romance. Adrienne Beauvisage, is a spoiled and headstrong young woman who constantly jumps into “new adventures”. Her father, Nicholai Beauvisage, worried for her, hires the dashing, albeit lovelorn, Capitan Nathan Ravaneau to watch over her. Sparks fly when, Ravaneau follows Adrienne disguised as Nathan Essex, her protector. High drama at high tea and on the high seas! A great read!
