Vampire Midnight

Rate this book
Kelly Chan, the magically engineered assassin you know from the Jonathan Shade series in her first solo adventure!

Picking up a package for a friend should be easy, but when the package is at Tally's, a shop that caters to things that go bump in the night, and that package is a woman, things can go south fast.

Of course, if the person picking up the package is Kelly Chan, when things go south, bad guys die.

But what happens when the bad guys are already dead? Or more specifically, undead.

Kelly finds herself face-to-face with an actual vampire who has the power to issue commands Kelly has no choice but to follow.

So how do you kill something when you've been commanded to protect it?

Awesome kick ass gal

Vampire Midnight by Gary Jonas is a great book that starts the Kelly Chan series. Kelly is a magically enhanced warrior that teaches women martial arts classes. He friend calls to help her retrieve her daughter from a vampire. Turns out that nothing is as it seems. Great story with plenty of action. Fast paced and great characters. Love his books.

Wow, I found this story in a box set I had purchased. This is one of several stories that really stood out for me. The book is the first in the Kelly Chan series. Kelly is absolutely amazing as a magically enhanced warrior who feels no pain and goes on ultra-high alert if anything tries to sneak up on her. She runs a martial arts class to teaches women who have been beaten by the men in their life and have had enough. She helps show them they don’t deserve that treatment and they can protect themselves.

Her best and probably only friend needed help in keeping her daughter out of the clutches of a vampire who had already partially turned her. He has power similar to that of the mafia, so he is very capable. But all of this is camouflage for what he really wants – a way to get a ring that will let him walk in the sunlight.

There is so much constant action taking place that the reader won’t know which way to turn next! Twists and turns happen continuously and the excitement never lessens. This is literally one of those “glued to every page” books that readers don’t want to stop reading. The characters have a wide assortment of distinct personalities, many quite likable, some fearsome, and some just plain horrible. We learn quite a bit about the vampire hierarchy. Everything in this story line is fascinating and intriguing. I purchased all of the Kelly Chan books and am checking out others for purchase. I was completely amazed and really enjoyed this book! I “struck gold” with the box set and just finding this book alone made it worth the expenditure. Grab your copy and be ready for the adventure of your life!

The original Kelly Chan was my favourite character from the Jonathon Shade series, and I am really glad to be able to read about her once again. Kelly is a magically enhanced warrior who runs a martial arts dojo and teaches self defence to abused women. When her friend calls her for help, Kelly gets drawn in a vampire power struggle and she has to use both her brawn and her brain in order to save her friend survive. There is plenty of action and killing in this story and some great characters. I love Kelly’s sarcastic nature, her abilities, loyalty, strength and blunt attitude. Victor is intriguing and you are never sure what he is really up to and Ben’s humorous, sexy attitude was entertaining. I liked this Chan much better than the parallel newer Chan in the more recent Shade books and this story meshes in well with that series. This was an action packed, entertaining story and I will look forward to reading the next in the series, and I am really hoping that she will be reunited with her Johnathon at some time in a future book.

OK, after all the time travel with the main series, I Jumped into the Kelly Chan series and was instantly swept away. This is fast paced urban fantasy with great characters who we got to know and love in the main series. Fantastic Read!

One of those vampire books where elaborate and unreasonable rules of conduct, mind-control, and irritating magical systems combine to make for a boring ride up until the too-easy ending.

When action is permitted, it's not bad.

Vampires, witches and a genetically engineered warrior? Top notch!

Loved the opening chapter and it only got better from there. It's going to cost me a lot to keep up with the series, but the teasers indicate that there's a lot more to come.

Decent sidebar novel; though more due to the side characters than Kelly, herself. As a Berserker type character, it seems Kelly lacks in personality, just a bit. Even in her stand-alone introduction, there isn't much emotion conveyance. In other words: Kelly as a main character isn't written (in this book, anyway), any different than Kelly as a secondary character. It's the one fault/flaw I find with the idea of her having a standalone series.

So the first few pages are a bit tiresome, first 2-3 chapters, in fact. The book works and gets four stars because of all the "Male" players Kelly can "Play off of." I won't deny I find this problematic for the idea of the next 2 books (and hope time proves me wrong, because this character is capable of being an independent badass.) I hope the writing gets at least a bit more internal like it does with Jonathan's books, but time will tell.

Victor, Ben and others make this more interesting. This is more of a "Male orientated" writer; but I'm hoping he can take the same respect to the female character in the future without this being necessary. The book deals with: Vampirism, control, and re-visits Victor (From Jonathan Shade's 9th book.) Though there isn't much connection between the two outside of him (Where were his lackey's and others in the 9th book?) Overall, after the first few stagnant chapters, it was a fun read; but I hope for more of an effort in the future.

Interesting first of a series

Kelly Chan turns out to be quite a bit better character than it seems, although it takes nearly the entire book to get there. The level of action is pretty good and the outcomes are good and then there's the final twist which is a bit of an unseen.... all in all a good fast read for a rainy day...

Great start!

Love the Jonathan Shade series so this is a nice addition. It's cool how Jonas put just a touch of the Shade series as to not make it cheesey.
