What if love meant exposing your darkest secret to the world?
Melusine Doré, monster hunter extraordinaire, has finally figured out what she is: half lethal mermaid, half-human…and completely in love. She’s doing her best to live her happily-ever-after. It seems, for once, that nothing will destroy her fairy-tale ending. Fellow hunter Levi Cannon loves her for who (and what) she is and the two of them have been able to hide her tails from the world. But when she and Levi discover that someone is trapping and torturing monsters, they're led on a journey to a traveling freak show. A simple investigation quickly turns into a tangled mess and the hard-won happiness the couple has earned begins to crumble. Levi goes missing and Melusine must tap into all her unusual talents to find and rescue her lover. This time though, Melusine won't be the deadliest fish in the sea. It seems the demons, or, in her case—monsters—from her past, are angry and unwilling to let go.
Adventure number three in the Clockwork Siren Series, Surfaced by Katie Hayoz brings much more than clowns to the fading tents of this steampunk traveling circus. Despite the danger, Melusine and Levi prove that the show must go on.
Katie grew up in Racine, Wisconsin where she acquired an irreversible nasal twang and an addiction for books with a slightly dark edge. She now lives in Geneva, Switzerland with her husband, two daughters, and a very fuzzy cat. She has been an avid reader of YA fiction for years. While she has a penchant for the paranormal, she devours a range of books -- along with popcorn and black licorice. She consumes all three in large quantities. Luckily, the books don't stay on her hips.
I was surprised at how much better this one was than the second one! It built a lot more on Mel's arc and I felt it was a satisfying conclusion to a light series.
Melusine and Levi are on an adventure in this novel. Having heard about some water goblins being trapped. The first person they suspect is Sir Edwin. Sir Edwin's obsession with Melusine has morphed into a seething hatred and determination to expose her as a siren. While tracking Sir Edwin down, a peer of Levi's asks for assistance with a bogart that agitated him and his wife in their new home in Wisconsin. After finding a very simple fix to the bogart problem, and agreeing to help the fellow out they confront Edwin and of course it leads to no where. But its obvious Sir Edwin is up to no good. "These creature's kill for fun, Sir Edwin. It's my duty to keep the public safe from monsters-" Edwin gestured to Melusine. "Then why are you working with one?" Taking the train they arrive at Levi's colleagues home only to find out that Sir Edwin interfered with that as well. With no demands on their time they decide to go to town, in town they see a Flyer for a Freak show and go to see it. While there This is where the whole series really pulls it together. "Monstrous Melusine The Monster Huntess: Chicago accepts and supports the real Miss Dore." A really fantastic ending! She was able to tie up all loose ends and conclude the series with a bang. Even Sir Edwin had to eat CROW. "She saved my life; he conceded. " I am glad I came across this author I will definitely be looking out for new Releases. She really writes with enthusiasm!
Never once did a sliver of doubt enter my mind; I just knew that I was going to love this book. The first two were beyond amazing, but even so, I was blown away by this third story. Melusine Doré and Levi Cannon, probably my new favorite literary couple, are faced once again with fierce monsters, and my favorite nefarious villain, Sir Edwin Aldridge. Seriously, I can't help but envision him twisting his mustache as he works out a new plan to trap Melusine. And when his plans invariably fall apart, I hear a small voice whisper, "Drat! Foiled again!" I halfway expected him to tie her to the railway tracks. Such a classic villain.
Surfaced also touches on my long-standing fascination with freak shows. Not that I've ever been to one, nor do I have any inclination to ever visit one, to be honest. But it's the history behind them that I have an interest in.
Now, there's just one small problem... is this the end? Will I be forced to live out my days without another of Melusine's adventures? In my eyes, the series is prime for any number of story lines. Please? In the meanwhile, I will just have to make my way through the rest of Katie Hayoz's books. In me, she has earned a devoted fan.
A copy of this book is provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
This is the third book in the Clockwork Siren Series and I definitely recommend reading the first two. This time, Melusine and Levi have come across Edwin yet again, yet something is fishy. First, they discover a water goblin in a cage in the water. Secondly, they are hired to remove a boggart from the home of a physician who belongs to the same club as Levi's father. When Melusine and Levi get to the home, they find out that Edwin has a team to capture the boggart and take it away. Melusine knows it was done improperly and is concerned. With the day off, the couple decide to attend the circus in town. Once there, they come across many monsters locked up, including the missing boggart. When the pair is split up, Melusine is faced with a huge shock. Her sisters are part of the circus! The reunion is not filled with love and hugs though. Will Melusine and Levi be reunited? What does Edwin have to do with this circus? Will Edwin get over Melusine's refusal and move on finally? This is a definite must read! I have thoroughly enjoyed this series! You have pulled me into a new genre and I thank you so much!! Definitely 5 stars for this book and for the series!!

Mel & Levi discover Edwin trapping monsters and putting them in a travelling freakshow - they investigate and end up the show's star attraction as Edwin continues his vendetta to expose Mel.
This was probably my favourite of the trilogy due to the plot involving a Victorian freakshow - mermaids, a shape shifting centaur and more angst than you can shake a stick at what with Mel reuniting with her two estranged sisters as well as Edwin's jealousy.
The ending is super exciting and my heart was in my mouth wondering just what Mel was going to do.
Same criticisms I've levelled at the other two books apply to this one. I would have loved a little more from Levi's POV, more mermaid/underwater and steampunk action and hotter love scenes rather than interrupted or fade to black.
Otherwise a massive thumbs up from me - I love the world, the mythology, the characters and the story. Checks a huge number of boxes for me and I'm just really sad that this is the last volume because I'd love to dive into this world again.
Surfaced is by far my favorite out of the series!!! Melusine and Levi are faced with fact that she is half mermaid and half human. They are again facing monsters that are trapped by no other than Sir Edwin. He is apart of a traveling freak show. Levi is missing and she does everything in her power to find him and bring him back. She even does questionable things that she never thought she'd do. This book is what a happy ending should be like in this type of genre.
Again, Surfaced was by far, IMO, the best out of the series. I didn't want it to end. So I found myself researching this authors other books.
Enjoy, this book is fantastic. Melusine shined in this book!
I love this third in the Clockwork Siren series for so many reasons. It ends the trilogy so well. It's not the over romanticized happily ever after. It IS a happy ending, but, even though it's fantastical steampunk, the ending is laced with the painful threads that make up reality. And I love books like that.
Ms. Haoyz has a wonderful way with words. Her writing is smooth and easy to follow. The images were great, and I really cannot wait to read more of her work.
