Are You Going?

The lives of many believers rarely escape the tight orbits that circle around their own schedules, their own interests. The familiar gravity of familiar places. But the trajectory of our faith should be one that’s continually cycling outward, fueled by a mission and message that God first brought within reach of  us . . .  so that we can now join with Him in taking it within reach of others.

Authors  Daniel L. Akin and Bruce Riley Ashford are calling today’s church members to lives of  going— whether going around the world or to people right where they live—going out with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Between the two of them, Akin and Ashford have trained thousands of men and women in both the mandates and methods for going to every nation. Now they have created a resource for individuals and churches to use together in calling even more to go.

I received this book for free when I attended the College at Southeastern's Preview Day.

This is an impressive little book. At first, I honestly wasn't sure what I would think of it, especially with the somewhat casual writing styles of the two authors. But even after the first few chapters, I knew this book had a lot of power to it.

Authors Danny Akin (President of Southeastern College, Professor of Preaching and Theology) and Bruce Ashford (Professor of Theology and Culture, Provost, and Dean of Faculty at SE College) both had so much to say, and they state it so clearly and convincingly, that I found it hard not to be convicted of my own relative silence in regard to sharing the Gospel with those around me. (Sidenote: Praise God for conviction when reading a book! He gives us godly men and women to teach us in many ways for our growth in Christ and to realize our own disobedience or failings.)

Much of the book aims at being what they call a "Great Commission Christian." So, one of the major points of this book is that no believer in Christ is not called to proclaim Christ to your neighbor and to the nations. All are called. Christ called them to. The question isn't to be "am I called?" but "how am I to obey the Great Commission?" We can be givers, senders, and of course, goers. I don't usually say this sort of thing about many books, but this book could very well be a life changer for some.

It just may have been for me.

I don’t know what to say. I have expectations with this book, because it came from people who supposed to encourage others to go, instead I found a poor book on that matter.

This is dictionary book. It gives you definitions surrounded by examples that kind of fit on it. One of the authors, Daniel Akin is the president of the SETBS and I thought, well let see what he has to say about the subject of going since this is one of the key elements of the Seminary. Honestly he doesn’t convince me. If I was think to join the SETBS and I read this book I wouldn’t.

I spoke to some of the students about the book I they told me this is not his best book, it’s just a simple one, read others, but I replay to them, this is one of the most important, because it’s the first one you read when you get to the Seminary, because they give it away for free.

The other author, Bruce Ashford, save the book a little bit, because he shares his good experiences going. And that’s the other thing of missions and people talking about, they only tell you the good things, stories with happy endings. People want to know the struggles, the suffering, as Luke share in the book of acts in his travels with Paul.

I can go on and talk more about it, but I would just say, we need honest books, no just simple books or books to achieve some personal goals.

It’s up to you to read it. I’m still not sure if I will study in the SETBS.

Very enjoyable book about responsibility of Christians to take the Gospel. Below are my takeaways from the book:

We cannot fulfill the Great Commission without the church.

The local church sends, and church members go.

Fulfilling the Gospel advance will vary from Christian to Christian and church to church. The key to Biblical obedience is that we are actively doing something in our Jerusalem, our Judea, our Samaria, and the ends of the earth.

Where did we ever get the idea that serving King Jesus is supposed to be safe?

Last words are meant to be lasting words, and Jesus’ last words were to go make disciples amongst the nations.

Is there a cost in being a Great Commission Christian? The answer is yes, but it’s the same cost that is involved in being a disciple of Jesus. Mark 8:34-38

Sadly, today the normal Christian life looks to many as to be the radical Christian life.

Not every person will go to the nation, but every person has a responsibility to the nations.

We must ask ourselves two questions: what is my part, and am I doing my part?

God calls every Christian to be a Great Commission Christian.

Every Christian is to go or send.

God calls His children to honor Him in at least four different ways:
In our church as church members
In our home
In our community
In our work

The authors of I Am Going are determined to remove all excuses for staying.
The book begins with a simple and precise 4-part presentation of God’s mission, a familiar illustration of the need for words and actions to accomplish the mission, and the ever-comforting challenge that God is in every part of the process.
The next 6 chapters lead us to consider our choices. We can choose to go with our church, to our neighborhood, to the nations, to a job, with a job, and in fact, anywhere.
The church is carefully defined. The Gospel is clearly presented. The twin Greats, Commission and Commandment are offered as two rails the train of ministry travels.
Neighborhood is wherever your neighbor is.
The with my job chapter is especially helpful. The Bible offers several examples. The opportunities to be a professional who brings the gift of the gospel may become the only means for world evangelization. The church is on the cusp of these efforts.
Each chapter ends with a personal ‘sign on the dotted line’ commitment. The book is interactive even on the back cover.
The brevity of the book speaks well of the care with which it was written. I Am Going is a small resource with big ideas that is a good gift for everyone you are sending.

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy of I Am Going through the publisher and Netgalley:

I Am Going encourages us as Christians to live a life of going, that is going out in the world spreading the Gospel.

This book allows us to look into God's Mission, Jesus'es Mission and the Churches mission as well as our own.

I give I Am Going five out of five stars.

Happy Reading.

Excellent little book which walks through the Great Commission and everyday life. Akin and Ashford do well to provide a practical tool for believers to determine where they are called to go, whether it is their neighborhood or the nations.

A down-to-earth, rubber-meets-the-road book about the calling of every Christian to make much of Christ and to live as an everyday missionary.
