After losing everything in a fire, Leo and his mom move into an unfinished development far off in the middle of Braxton Woods. As summer vacation begins, Leo and his new friends set out to explore the land behind their homes. They are alarmed to find sinkholes, horrific creatures, electrical disturbances, and even a buried carnival from long ago. Despite their growing fears, they are drawn toward solving the extraordinary mystery. Little do they know they are about to unearth a sinister force and discover a dark, forgotten secret from the town’s past. Ultimately, they must overcome the willies, heebie-jeebies, creeps, shakes, and shivers as they chose danger over a far greater threat—a dull summer.
Leo and his mom has just moved to their new house, after loosing their old one and everything else in a fire. This new house is one of five houses in an isolated cul de sac that were part of an unfinished development. Summer is just starting and Leo hopes to have some fun with his new neighbor friends Nora, and the twins Albert and Oliver. Maybe even explore the extensive woods behind their houses. What looks like a boring vacation turns out to be the most exciting summer ever when the gang finds sinkholes, fantastic creatures, and even a buried one hundred year old carnival.
This middle grade novel was an enjoyable read. The plot is consistent and intriguing. the characters are funny and I got engage to them quickly. Even Colin, a friend from Leo's old neighborhood who you only get to know through his texts adds to the cast. Creepy at some moments, the story has lots of action and a very satisfying ending.
I received this book from the author via LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review.
Grateful for having received a copy to read and review Braxton Woods Mystique. Make sure to get yours! Expected publication date: April 15th 2016.
5 houses of a development which was never finished in Braxton Woods. Leo and his mom got one through a housing lottery. They move in right before the summer holiday and what seemed to become the most boring summer of all, turned out into something quite different!
Leo and the neighbour kids set out to explore the area and quickly find out a lot of weird **** is going on in the woods. They decide to investigate and find tons of information about the town's past and start to dig deeper and try to solve this mystery.
With them, the reader gathers more and more data, experiences the strangest and scariest events. The closer we get to the end and unravel the secret, the more the suspense builds up. Sinkholes, a buried carnival and a half-baked hermit. Even the unexplained rumbling of the earth & lightning are nothing compared to horrid beasts that seem to lure in the dark!
Where do they come from? Why are they here? How long before somebody really gets hurt? Where will it all end? The portal? Now, go through. Go, and this harness tethered with polarity from our dimension will grant your return! ;)
Leo is new in town and is not exactly fitting in. To make it worse he lives way out of town, near Braxton Woods. During summer holidays he and his few neighbors are thrown together with nothing to do. What else is there on the agenda but explore the new surroundings: Braxton Woods. Little do the kids know what a fantastic, mystical truth they will come upon.
This novel is both intriguing and exciting, with a bit of romance thrown in. I have read quite a few fantasy stories, and I must say I have never read one quite like this. The characters are likable and lifelike, and I found myself drawn into their world. This story will stretch your imagination, and excite you with adventure.
Adam Furgang not only has one of the best last names in the history of last names but he’s also a master of the mysteriously sinister children's middle grade book. With BRAXTON WOODS MYSTIQUE, Furgang has created a dark world living beyond our own and twists a story so charming and powerful that you’ll have a helluva hard time putting it down. Read, if you dare!
