Big Guy is a sweet standalone gay romance novella with shy guys, weird diets, a happy ending and no cliffhanger.
Megan Reddaway has been entertained by fictional characters acting out their stories in her head for as long as she can remember. She began writing them down as soon as she could.
Since she grew up (more or less), she’s worked as a secretary, driver, waitress, and flower-seller, among other things, but she always has a story bubbling away at the same time.
Short but enjoyable :) I liked both the characters.
Weight loss stories can be tricky. It's a hard subject to write without being condescending or mean or pretending that weight doesn't have an effect on self image. But I trust Megan Reddaway to write a fairly nuanced story, and even though it was short, I felt like she managed some nuance. A person can want to lose weight, and also learn to accept themselves and accept love without having met that goal. It's not either/or.
One thing I liked is that although Truman's mother was a piece of work, she wasn't completely the villain and she got a happy ending, too! Everybody got a happy ending! :)

This was actually a pretty enjoyable, if slightly silly story. Even though the story is pretty short it never felt like it was missing much. The character where well written and Truman/Troy was very sympathetic. As a big girl myself I could see myself in quite a few of the situations. And the book never gets preachy about dieting or weight loss. The romance felt rather too quick, but considering the amount of pages I thought it wasn't badly done.
This story was a nice surprise; a well-written, cute romance with main characters possessing a body type not normally seen in gay romance.
Big Guy stars overweight Truman Rautigan whose mother is obsessed with a weight loss program and urges Truman to scope out the competition and steal members to help with their own bottom line.
At the first meeting he goes undercover at Truman meets Brad and is instantly smitten. Truman and Brad become friends and then more while Truman’s lies eat away at him.
Something great happens as Truman and Brad get to know each other; Truman actually loses weight.
This was a short story but could’ve easily been fleshed out into a novella or novel. The writing here is strong and entertaining and the characters realistic and likable.
This was a delightful, sweet, tasty short story. It humorously sinks its teeth into the foibles of weight loss and dealing with loving, but over-bearing family. While funny, it is realistic in the portrayal of diets, etc. I was just a little ill-at-ease while reading some very familiar scenarios from my own diet history. The author is very good: I instantly cared for the MC and felt involved in the scenes, as if I was there.
