Nero sees a stranger when he looks in the mirror. After years as a twisted beast-like creature, the hybrid soldier looks like any other human thanks to an injection by a dying Horatius Group scientist. The change in appearance didn’t wipe away his guilt over his time with the ruthless Group. It also doesn’t make other hybrids trust him. They still see the beast enforcer for the Group and have no qualms about telling him, including Nyx, the only woman he’s ever desired. Nyx isn’t about to accept Nero’s anything but a Horatius Group spy waiting for his opportunity to sell them all out. She’s also certain he’s trying to steal her position in the hybrid community. Unfortunately, she can’t seem to get her traitorous body to stop being attracted to him. The Group may or may not be targeting the hybrids, but the suspicious Azilians still linger nearby, harboring a weapon of unimaginable power. A chance recon mission against the cult forces Nero and Nyx to confront both their enemies and their passion.
Madison currently lives with her husband and two children in the Valley of the Sun. Phoenix, Arizona. After leaving the frozen tundra of the north, Madison was more surprised than anyone with how much she has enjoyed living in the desert. Seeing as she had stated on more than one occasion how much she hated the heat, it was an odd move. But it seemed her hatred for sub-zero temps and ice, or really the things that ice could do, won out in the end. When she’s not writing, she’s enjoying time with her family. Madison and her family frequent festivals in the area, as well as local cultural events, and spend time with family in the area. In the summer she is most likely to be found in the pool with the family and in the winter by the fireplace. Since both her children are autistic, days can be a little chaotic but with her husband beside her, there’s nothing she can’t handle. Luckily he is also an author and able to share in all the activities (and chores) special needs kids require. Madison has a full schedule of releases planned for 2014 listed and updated on her blog: http://madisonstevens.blogspot.com/ Newsletter Sign-up: http://eepurl.com/OX9r5
Nero and Nyx have each appeared in previous stories, both were introduced in the Luna Lodge series, and Nyx was in the previous story here for Magnus. As a result I came in to this story aware these were interesting and complex characters, and ready to get to know them better.
Nyx is one of the handful of hybrid women, being such a rare being means, among other things, there's a lot she doesn't know about herself. It is generally accepted fact that male hybrids have Vestals... other halves meant for them, out there, but do the females also?
Nero isn't like the Luna Lodge hybrids, and prior to their escape he wasn't like Rem's group of hybrids either. Nero was a monster among beasts, the enforcer among hid own kind, hated as a traitor, only he knew what he'd endured to stay alive, what he'd survived... simply hoping he was surviving for a reason.
Now they are 'free', but what free and freedom means is still being defined, for one and all.
Interesting what is uncovered but because it’s so short there really isn’t much to this story. It could have been full of trauma and regret, but it’s kinda glossed over super quickly and it’s a shame. Overall I liked it, but definitely wanted more.
During the reading of Remus's book in the original Luna Lodge series, I fell for Nero. I can't explain why. You could tell that this hybrid beast had a true core. He had a heart. I needed him to have his own book and when I found this second series I was so excited. Madison did not let me down. Nero was exactly as I wanted him to be. H now had the same look with those bright blue eyes and body tattoos like the others. I was able to see how the change in his looks affected him and finding out who his bonded was made me even happier. I really love when a character who is deemed bad ends up being one of the good guys.
The Azilians are a strange cult. Really want to know what they are doing. Nero is very protective of Nyx. He loves her fierce attitude. Nyx is smart and funny. Rem is always mysterious. Marcus needs an attitude adjustment. I like Lucas. Can't wait for the next one.
I loved the story. I would highly recommend. I give it Four stars because it was to short. I would have like to read about the going on with the Azilians and Anassa. Hopefully will get more information in the next book.
So disappointing. I love Madison's entire series but this one fell flat for me. There are a lot of grammatical errors and it was so boring. I felt no connection between Nero and Nix and even felt the sex scenes were weak.
