Making a Difference Starts with Standing Up for What’s Right

A fourteen-year-old girl testifies before the Maryland state senate in support of the traditional family. A young man and his new wife launch a campaign to decrease abortions in their community. A high school cheerleader goes to court for the right to put Bible verses on banners at football games.

These young Americans knew that honoring God and his Word was more important than winning friends or keeping their jobs.

In No Fear Tony Perkins tells the stories of young Christians who took a stand for truth in the face of intense opposition. These unlikely heroes will show you the dramatic influence one person can have in seeking fairness, justice, and compassion in a nation. The book also draws you back to the heroes of the Bible who stood up for God in their own day and culture, modeling the same brand of courage that is needed today.

What would you do for God if you had no fear? The possibilities are endless. It’s time to get started!

My Review

No Fear is a compilation of stories of courageous young people standing for biblical truth in a world that hates truth. These are young people that are doing for the world and the church than most mature adults. These kids, while an inspiration to those their own age, but can be an inspiration to those older than they are. They are this generations movers and shakers. This is a must read not just for believers, but everybody.

So very appropriate for today. Even more so than when it was written 5 years ago. I rarely give five stars to books. This one earned it. It is an easy read with short chapters. Each is a different story of a person who stood against culture in the face of fear to represent Christ. All but one are modern Americans who have undergone some sort of attack for their Christian beliefs. Perkins then equates the story to a Bible story and gives takeaway points for the reader.
Perkins reminds us that the antidote to fear is “Humble declaration of total and absolute dependence on God”. We will have fear, but our fear (reverence) of God is greater than our fear of man. There is peace when we “consider ourselves already dead to Christ.”
What a powerful book! There is no doubt we will all have to count the cost at some point in our life— maybe more than once. Now more than ever.

My Book Group read "No Fear" and the discussion was so rich. The decisions and beliefs of the people in this book are amazing. Would I make all of the same decisions they made? No. But I can respect their decisions and admire the strength of their beliefs.

Read about individuals who have stood for their faith, in the United States. It is a book about young people willing to step out from the world and stand for the Living God. It will leave you with the question, is it not time we stand for our faith? Strongly recommend this book.

I’m a member of the Family Christian Bloggers and they provided me with a free copy of “No Fear” for this review.

In No Fear, Tony Perkins explored our deepest hidden fears and how to have courage. Tony Perkins began the book by looking at Moses, Joshua, Mary, Paul, and many more and how God declared to them to not be afraid. Throughout the book, he shared stories to encourage readers to see how others dealt with their fears and made a stand for Christ. At the end of each chapter, he also related a story back to a character in the Bible.

One of my favorite stories was entitled, “Too Pure for American Idol”. Moriah Peters grew up in a Christian home and received Him as her personal Savior when she was in the sixth grade on a youth group trip. In high school, she started a Bible study group in one of her teacher’s classrooms. This taught her to stand up for what she believes in and to live a life that is pleasing to Christ. She loved to sing in church and her mother and friends encouraged her to audition for the popular TV show, American Idol. She made it round after round in front of many different producers. Eventually, she performed in front of the judges. She chose to sing “Angel” by Jessica Simpson because this was the only song that contained a reference to Heaven. The judges loved her voice and they thought she sounded great. The producers of the show shared interviews of Moriah Peters that the judges saw. During the interviews, she revealed that she had never been kissed and she is saving her first kiss until marriage. Guest judge, Avril Lavinge stated that Moriah Peters was trying to be too perfect. Kara DioGuardi made comments about how she needed to go out and kiss a guy where she can feel sexy. They also told her to go kiss a guy and come back and audition again. She left the audition room and a random man approached her. The man told her that he loved her voice and how she talked about God. The man then introduced her to Wendy Green. Wendy’s husband is the musical director of Christian artist, Steven Curtis Chapman. Moriah Peters travelled to Nashville, Tennessee and recorded a demo to send to different labels in hopes of getting signed at the age of seventeen. Reunion Records liked what they heard and signed her. Reunion Records is also home to recording artists Steven Curtis Chapman, Casting Crowns, and Brandon Heath. She also met her future husband, Joel Smallbone from Kings & Country and he was her first kiss when they married.

I would recommend this awesome book to anyone who is ready to see how people of this generation is taking a stance for Christ and risking it all. I loved how Tony Perkins shared stories about Lila Rose and how she decided to stand against Plan Parenthood, Roy Costner who was instructed not to say the Lord’s Prayer during his valedictorian speech, Chad Farnan who had a teacher who stated derogatory comments about Christians during his class and how he decided to stand up against him and the school board. The book included many more amazing stories about young people living for Christ. I loved how Tony Perkins related each story back to a Biblical character and he included scripture to encourage readers to have courage in today’s times. I believe this book is very timely considering the fact, our faith is being tested more and more each day and people are trying to censor Christ out of everything. This book is a must have for every middle school, high school, college student, and young adult! This book will inspire you to have courage and to use your voice and actions to make a different even when faced with persecution!

In a world filled with fear and people trying to live “politically correct” lives, even among many professing Christian believers, it is refreshing and encouraging to know there ARE Christians who choose to be “Biblically Correct” in their thinking and actions. They have chosen the lonely path of faith and courage standing up for what gives glory to God and for what is right, no matter the cost. These are some of the people Tony Perkins writes about in his new book, No Fear.

In his book No Fear, author Perkins first shares examples of people in the Word of God who rose above their fears because of their faith in God and did extraordinary things through the strength and power of God. He mentions Biblical men and women such as Abraham, Moses, Joshua, Mary, Peter and others who faced tremendous challenges to their faith and overcame them by living out their faith in God as God had commanded them to do. They did not do so perfectly as no one does; however, despite their sin and failures they did demonstrate their real faith in the real God resulting in some pretty amazing things happening in and through their lives.

In chapter’s 2-12 of the book Tony Perkins shares the very different stories of very different people, ordinary men and women, who had extraordinary faith challenges and who stood firm in their faith, enduring persecution, with each experiencing different outcomes. For example, in the chapter titled, “Flipping Houses, Not Convictions” he writes about two brothers, Jason and David Benham, who went into the business of buying old homes, fixing them up and “flipping” or reselling them for a profit. The brothers became quite successful in their business and as a result they were offered an opportunity to have their own TV show on HGTV called “Flip It Forward.” However, as a result of their faith and convictions concerning the family and marriage the show was cancelled…mainly because of the opposition mounted by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) against them and their show. This is just one of the many stories of people Author Perkins shares about who were called on to make a decision…to either obey man or God…and the men and women in his book chose to obey God rather than obey man, or please themselves, and experience the consequences of their actions for the glory of God. And the book is interactive in that, at the end of each chapter, there are some self-evaluation questions for us as readers to ponder concerning where we are at in our walk of faith with the Lord and how we would respond if we were persecuted severely for our faith.

If you need insight and encouragement as to how to stand for God and Christ and His Word in the midst of opposition and persecution in our present evil world you will find this book and the people’s examples contained therein to be most helpful.

This book offers real role models for young Christian to emulate as they enter into adulthood. It would be a good companion to teen lessons, on witnessing and being brave with your faith. These are not made up stories, you will remember some of them making the news. We need to set before our young people models of strength and conviction. I particularly like the book because the 12 chapters were short, and presented the modern day model first and then followed it with the companion Bible stories of real figures standing up to the authorities with their witness, no matter what the outcome would be. Then 4 discussion questions to further the discussion. Topics covered were abortion, holding pure and true in your music and beauty contests, facing up to the local government at school against those that want to push their beliefs. Standing up for Christian marriage between a man and a woman, the right way to fight like the Freedom from Religion foundation does. You are not alone, whether it is your business not making a cake for a gay couple or your standing up for prayer in the schools. You can’t help but be hopeful for our future with the examples of these young people, standing up and witnessing for what they have found to be true with Christ.
Tony Perkins, the author is the President of the Family Research Council in Washington, he is one of the leading spokespersons for the nations’s conservative policy makers and is on Fox news often. No matter where you find yourself politically, this shows that youth and any of us can stand up for their beliefs, no matter what the cost, in our increasingly anti-Christian culture.

Tony Perkins, No Fear New York: Waterbrook, 2015, 187 pp. $8.92

God’s Word is clear: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go”” (Joshua 1:9, ESV). In the pages of the New Testament, we are told, “We must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29). Yet, we find ourselves in troubling times. The church is drowning in compromise and the culture applauds when believers cave in.

Believers who are unwilling to acquiesce to the demands of the world will be met with fierce persecution and be marginalized emotionally and even physically.

These times demand believers who are both firm in character but also minister to lost people with biblical fidelity. No Fear by Tony Perkins is the perfect book for Christ-followers who need encouragement in a day filled with compromise. Perkins makes a solid contribution in this work as he presents real-life stories of Christ-followers who endured persecution because of their strong stand for truth and the claims of the gospel.

The true stories that Perkins presents are linked to biblical stories that help drive home the point of each chapter. The writing is clear and compelling and is geared to a younger audience. Surely, these short and readable chapters will provide a wealth of inspiration to Christians who need a boost of encouragement as they brave the storms of adversity.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review.

Book of faithful followers of Christ

This book is a great tool to use in a discipleship role because the questions that you get to answer makes this book "No Fear" very much like the Hall of Faith of Faith found in Hebrews 11 of great Christians who fought the battle to the very end. The stories that were told gives me encouragement to live and die for Jesus on a daily basis. I liked how Tony Perkins showed us stories from the Bible in comparison to real life scenarios. We live in a world that the name of Jesus offends many people, but Jesus says that if we deny him in front of others he will deny before his father in heaven and we will spend a lifetime seperated from the love of God in hell. Christians must take a stand for their faith I am seeing and hearing many Christians willing to die for the cause. Being a Christian does not mean our life is going to be easy. I wish my youth group had the same faith I did growing up and not afraid to share their faith without being scorned or mock.

I highly recommend reading this book and several others to give you strength when you are weak, study what other Christians are doing for standing on the word of God, because it is not being taught in the school systems yet our public school systems rather teach on Islam. Today more than ever we have to be that voice of forgiveness, love, peace, and hope to a world that has lost faith in these things that Jesus had taught us from the beginning of time.

When you look around at current events, it's easy to feel fear rising in your mind and heart. in NO FEAR, Tony Perkins gives readers the insights and ammunition to know they are not alone and can live with courage. As he details in the first chapter, "Today I see a swelling wave of younger people choosing to do the same thing. In the pages that follow, I will share their stories of courageous obedience to God and look at other biblical characters who stood strong in their faith. I am so encouraged by this new generation of followers of Jesus who aren't backing down from the hostility and vitriol they gave for standing firm in their faith." (page 8). Each chapter includes a series of questions for readers or small groups.

This well-written book is worth reading and highly recommended.

In this evolving world of mediocrity and spineless wonders, it is comforting, refreshing, and grounding to read this book. Perkins gives examples of young folks under 25 that are standing up for what's right in a time when no one has any stones left to do so. I thank him for taking the time to document these people's plight and courage in a world where there are no heroes left to look up to. God bless him and all the new generation standing for truth. If you need some solid words of faith to help build you up again, please read this book to know that you are not alone.

One of the things I loved most about this book is that I found it encouraging and relatable. The book focuses on the one thing that I truly believe all Christians deal with at one point in their life: Fear. It also touches on how to stand up and not let that Fear control our Christian lives. It was hard seeing the struggles that other Christians face in their lives, and it really made me think about the times where I have stood back and let fear control what I do.

Simply put it's a good thing to read stories of people struggling because of their faith in Jesus Christ. It helps me personally get ready for the persecution (mild or severe) that is coming to our nation.

Great book about people who have taken a stand for Christ. It's funny to read the one star reviews on Amazon from people who obviously didn't read the book and commented on what they thought the book said
