That cover, for the love of god, is marvelous.

The Tantric Curse is a story of an 8-year-old orphan girl Rhea.

After the brutal accident of her parents, she is adopted by a Tantric who will be her guardian. She meets Krishnam there. It is a beautifully fabricated story of their love and sacrifices in order to nullify the curse that has been bestowed upon them since ages or to die in the process.

With this book, Anupama manages to break many stereotypes. She has bravely penned down concepts and facts that were not known widely before.

Being a fiction novel, it was a lot informative and entertaining at the same time. I adored the progression of this story. Well written and developed characters were a bonus.

I have always been a fan of the books that has a strong female protagonist in it. It is amazing to see women rocking the world with their talent and charm.

To be able to fully appreciate The Tantric Curse, one needs to leave all their previous beliefs at a corner and see this book without any hindrance. Once you'll give up your beliefs, this book will enlighten you about humongous things. Be ready to accept the lessons it teaches you.

Although many readers might think twice before picking up this one, but I ask them to not hesitate going for it.

Writing style is something I look for in every writer. Pellucid and sharp. You will want to read more of Anupama's works after this one.

I believe that the acceptance of these kind of books in the literary arena is a bliss. I'm profoundly happy to observe this diversification debut authors are bringing to the field.

Verdict : This debut novel by Anupama Garg will not disappoint you.

What a Hypnotic book cover! Even if I haven't received this book from author I would have bought from market. 'The Tantric Curse' - by Anupama Garg is a insightful book with a strong story line and wonderful characters.

No need to take you through story outline as it is nicely written in blurb. Book throws lights on the things we consider sinister. In India tantra is considered taboo. Though principal Goddess of tantra (Chamunda - Durga or Kamyakshini) is worshipped by all, tantrics who worship Goddess were seen as black magician.

Apart from insights, through out the story author kept secret of why Krishnam and Rhea should keep distance from each other.
The only reason I am giving 0.5 less is I found few parts of story (which is not more than 8-10%) boring / slow and it took me more time to finish the book.

Tantra is a field which is surrounded by intrigue and mysticism. Tantric rituals and practices are riddled with a lot of myths and pre-conceived notions. When I came across The Tantric Curse which is written by Anupama Garg who has been trained by Baba Batuk Nath, a renowned Tantric, I knew that I had to read this book. And that was because, I believed that a book written by a practicing Tantric will shed light on this ancient science of Tantra.

The Tantric Curse is a love story with the backdrop of Tantra and Tantrics.

An eight year old Rhea mysteriously reaches Shaktidham, a Tantric house of worship. She has an unusual power to foresee the future. The Guru of this sadhanasthal, Satya recognizes her special abilities and raises her as her own daughter along with his son Krishnam. Satya trains her in the field of Tantra, to carry on his lineage, a privilege previously bestowed only to males.

But the lineage has been cursed for generations, and it is up to Rhea to either break the curse or perish in the attempt. Will she succeed in her endeavour? Will her love for Krishnam become an obstacle in her path? Well, you need to read the book to find that.

The Tantric Curse brings to light that Tantrics are regular people who lead normal lives like all of us. They study in regular schools and colleges , have regular jobs and regular friends with whom they party, have affairs or one night stands or wear fashionable clothes and enjoy their drinks too. The only difference is that they have attained enlightenment and liberation through sadhana or dedication to the Goddess.

The Tantric Curse, also dispels some myths about the Tantric practice. Just like in the field of medicine there are qualified doctors and quacks, similarly Tantra has been exploited and misrepresented by many too.

Other insightful aspects shared in the book are about the significance of Amavasya or the night of new moon and that Om is the complete mantra. It was interesting to read about the practice of touching someone’s feet. Touching an elder’s feet is not only a sign of reverence and respect but also receiving a fraction of his energy as a blessing. The book also shares information on the various chakras of our body and that in Tantra, how the power is used is very crucial. Several conversations in the book make you reflect and ponder on various aspects of life and its circumstances.

While, all this information is interesting and insightful, I found the progression of the story a bit patchy at times. There were a lot of unexplained or vague or trivial scenes in the story. Dr Vishnukant’s part seemed liked a forced entry and why Rhea continued to live with him despite she not wanting to be a part of his advances was something I could not comprehend. Also, the real aspect of Tantra, how it is practiced and how one attains these mystical powers is not touched upon. Since the author is a practicing Tantric, so guess that raised the expectations. The story is not about the Tantric curse either, because the curse part comes up only towards the very end. So, though the book kept me engaged all throughout, but a feeling of dissatisfaction crept in as I finished reading the last page. I know, it could be just me.

The language is simple and lucid and reads well.

If you are looking to read a love story based on an unconventional theme and gain some insights about Tantra, then you must go for The Tantric Curse.

I received a copy from the author, Anupama, in exchange for an honest review.

Contrary to the heavy title of the novel, The Tantric curse is a light read about love and friendship injected with facts about tantra and tantric practices along with scientific reasoning.

The story begins with a young girl Rhea, finding her ways into Shaktidham and she grows up in the ashram alongside Krishnam, the son of the head priest Satya and her love interest. The author has done an excellent job in developing the protagonist’s character where her feminism is the strength of the character. The backdrop of tantra is woven well in the conversations of the characters so that as a reader I felt in the loop even though I had no knowledge about tantric and tantra.

At some places, the plot was not tightly wound, and it felt like things were allowed to happen just so that the story could move forward. Other than that, it was an interesting read. Given that tantra and tantric practices are mostly looked at with suspicion this story does well to throw light on the many aspects of this practice, especially the part about the chakras is beautifully written.

Quote from the book:

"To find stillness in motion is the paradox to accomplish, rather than just being still while in stillness."
A perfect read for the holidays.

My rating is 4 stars.

A fabulous read ! The mysterious subject of Tantra presented in a novel and comprehendible way to put across the truths about Tantra . It is a captivating story with characters which seem very real and inspiring. The book is difficult to keep and contains everything from spirituality to sensuality. The name of the book could have been misleading but I am glad that I picked it up. The protagonist Rhea and her love Krishnam give a new meaning to the word love in the present times when the deeper understanding of love seems to be diminishing. The book takes us from the sadhanasthal, to fashion show to London and U.S with amazing ease and flow. The language is conversational and the concepts are clearly explained giving a peep into the mind of the author who herself is a practicing Tantric. After a long time a book by an Indian author that seems to be a perfect script for a movie which will keep the readers guessing till the last page. I would recommend this book to all as its simple and practical wisdom is so relevant for all generations whether young or old, the story is so gripping that I finished it in three days. However the book has to be read with an open mind as it is a non conventional approach and difficult to accept for conditioned and fixed minds.

As we are planning to conquer over the solar system, we humans are suddenly feeling like demigods. Life can be taken away in blink of an eye. In this world of different shades of gray, emotions are slowly diminishing into oblivion. When life offers us everything with a reason, yet there are moments when we are flabbergasted upon experiencing the unusual. The paranormal as a few would call it. But are they really paranormal? Or are not equipped enough to understand the divine cosmos?
Tantra...
The word itself has a vibration that either raises a deep humility within us or strikes a chord of fear. When I first held the book in my hands I was totally hypnotized by the cover. Huge eyes amidst geometric patterns made me feel equally small as the white silhouette of the girl in the middle. Very effective in drawing a reader towards this book.

The Story...
Rhea is an orphan who lands up in a Shaktidham, a Tantric house of worship. Satya, the guru of this house takes her in and soon finds out that she has her own special powers. Growing up in this unique environment along with her Guru's son Krishnam she displays deep understanding of human emotions, dreams and has her own power of clairvoyance. As they grown up immersed in sadhana and a daily lifestyle which is very close to mother earth, Krishnam and Rhea fall in love.
“Love is the energy behind all creation. The search for love never ends, yet is all around us, for us to experience…
A love so powerful and consuming that they feel that they are soulmates from time immemorial.
So did the reader in me. But then when Satya finds out, he tells them something which makes Krishnam leave Rhea and India for a long time.

An emotional saga...
Being a tantic or a student of tantra is not easy for Rhea. She becomes the target of ridicule in her college where students either hate her or fear her. And there are few who think that her life is full of orgies and sexual activities.
“They have powers to possess people and are destructive. I have heard Tantrics are dangerous people,” said someone.
Have heard?

Ms. Garg has answered these with a flair and in a very convincing manner. No practice that has sustained over time can be bad or evil. It is how you use your knowledge. I think this is taught in every religion and there is no religion in this world which can say that they are not curious about that 'touch of magic' in their lives. Those who have understood the law of nature will know that everything exists for a reason. It is only with our heightened sense of acceptance we can understand the true meaning of nature. So when Rhea has her dreams or she could make incidents happen without moving from the place - I believed her. Science is yet to open this realm of human mind.

Beautiful relationships...
Satya, the Guru of Rhea deserves a special mention here. His silent presence and guidance has a soothing effect to the volatile incidents that take place in Rhea's life. Attacks from the evil forces of black magic to fellow students and jealous friends all make this novel a page turner. Out of every incident Rhea comes out stronger and more vivacious. I might not agree with every action of hers but then one cannot argue that she is an evolved being who has a much better understanding of human nature.

Attractive ...
Rhea is beautiful and not only physically but also in her heart. She has surrendered herself completely to the art of Tantra yet maintains the belief that power cannot be misused. If everyone thought that than this art of divination would not have been misunderstood for so long. When Rhea explains in every step about what Tantra is, what is Kundalini Yoga and sadhna, the pure form of Tantra is evident. As it was meant to be.

The author wanted to pass a message through her writing about the pure form of Tantra and she has succeeded. Those who will read this book need to keep an open mind to learn. Do not read this book with preconceived notions of Black magic and voodoo. Tantra is not about harming others, to do vashikaran or kill your mother in laws. It is not the true form of Tantra. Like Wicca is misunderstood in the west, similarly Tantra is feared in India. To me, any form which connects you to the Almighty cannot be wrong. Blame the people not the culture.

I have time and again confessed my undying fascination towards mythology. Throw me anything myth, be it Hindu, Arab, Greek, Roman, Egyptian or Norse, I am in for all. But when it comes to real facts, the boundary of my knowledge is as limited as the number of rhinos in the world. That is why, when took the book The Tantric Course for review, I was little wary. What it would be like to read, what issues the book will deal and how much do I want to know about tantra. For the readers, who doesn’t know about Tantra, let me tell you what it is. According to Wikipedia, Tantra (Tantrism) or Tantrabidya is an ancient Indian tradition of beliefs and meditation and ritual practices that seeks to channel the divine energy of macrocosm or godhead into the human macrocosm, to attain siddhis and moksha.

Though I was born in the Land of Kamakhya, the Goddess of Tantrism, I know a little about this practice. My knowledge was confined to what the Indian Television showed and to what I have read about it in Assamese books. But Anupama Garg has played her card well with this book. With just the title, she managed to pull the reader to take a look in the book. And mind you, you read just one paragraph, and you will not be able to put it down. That was the charm and power of The Tantric Course over the readers.

But if you are going to prejudge it as a book which dealt with the Tantrism, the author can prove you wrong at the very first chapter. The book is a love story, a purest of the pure love story. It is the story of a simple girl who managed to turn herself divine with her unprecedented love. It is the story of a girl who with utmost faith and devotion put an end to age long liabilities. So, let’s discuss what I love and did not love about the book.

image

Things that I loved about the book

The first thing that I love about the book is its story. The story is very simple and believable. It is the story of Rhea and Krish as they took the steps in the practical world and spiritual world hand by hand. It is the story of their love, devotion and faith to each other. It is the story of a sadhak who devoted his world life for goodness and did not hesitate to sacrifice his longing for his son in order to save the girl he took in as his own. It is also the story of Neel who dealt bravely with the problems of his life and won. It is also the story of every human being who has achieved great heights with believe on God and himself.

I loved each and every character of the book. They were well written and each one was craved with much importance from the author. You will not find any character who is unbelievable in the book. The author has crafted each character in such a way that you laugh with them, you cry with them and you feel content with them.

The blending of religious facts with the fiction is so smooth that you don’t feel that you are reading something which is being practiced by sadhaks. Rather, they gave the story a beauty of its own. They give you mental food to devour, chew and digest.

Most beautiful thing about the book is its language. The language is very simple and the flow in the novel was like a breeze. Editing part is also very good and there is no bump in it. Cover of the book is attractive and Rupa has done a good job here.

Things that I didn’t like about the book

There was absolutely nothing that I didn’t love about the book. Just a minor craving to know more about Neel’s feelings for Rhea. I would love to know more about how he dealt with life post Rhea-Krish marriage.

So guys put your prejudice aside and take this book. I am sure that you won’t be disappointed.

A smooth pleasant read with occasional feeds about the tantric world and the preconceived notions it usually drag along. This is the life story of a little girl, growing up in an ashram, somewhat secluded from outside world. She posses a natural trait to the tantric practices, and staying along the line of tantra makes takes her life through turns she wasn't prepared for. I might have overdid the intro there, but its actually a light read on friendship and love, with scientific information of tantric ways, channeling along with.

The mystic world of vibrations and sainthood reminded me a lot of Don Juan and Castaneda's "A Separate Reality". Also I couldn't help but get reminded of Chanakyas Chant along way, mostly coz of Varanasi and the play of powers, devoid of the latter's crookedness though. There were portions I found difficult to digest, portions off kilter to my usual thought process, still the simple delightful writing took me through, till the end, like standing in a quagmire.

An issue I had with the later portion of book was, the characters were lettings things to go south deliberately, like its something out of their hand. Maybe I am wrong in my own understanding, but taking a stand would have made life easy for them, at least for the ones they were involved with if not them. Instead the novel went all New Moon with Rhea-Krishnam saga. Again like its been said, everything happens for a reason and the imponderables kind of made sense by the end.

Tantra has always been a clouded area for me, something mystic, something to be away from, something no one seems to have a proper understanding. This book has done a brilliant job in clearing many things up, in fact had me wish for illustrations at that chakra part, which was quite brilliantly put. Also author expressed the characters in their imperfections, in not just the learning part, but also in maturity. That in unison with authors brief bio compels reader to ponder on the possibility of facts in this fiction, probably some she lived through.

"To find stillness in motion is the paradox to accomplish, rather than just being still while in stillness".

And it comes with an utterly terrific cover art, capable to hypnotize in the very look. Also I extend my great-fullness and regards to Team TTC for an early review copy.

When I first picked up this book named "The Tantric Curse" and saw its cover page with those big scary eyes and then the word "tantric" designed in red font, I was quite skeptical if I would prefer reading this book but something urged me to give it a try. It took me 3 long weeks to complete this novel because of busy schedule but the power of each sentence, page and chapter of this book is so immense that even after I resumed it after 3 weeks just from where I left it last time, I was able to remember everything I had read within few minutes. It rarely happens with fiction books written by Indian authors these days. Almost all of them have similar plot which becomes confusing in case you take a long break while reading. I am very delighted to say that Anupama Garg have created a benchmark with this unusual book.

The basic intention behind writing this book has been author's desire to let the world know that Tantra world is not what it is being assumed by the people. And it is more about mental peace, meditation, spiritualism and self-actualization. Right from the first page to the last, author's focus has not shifted to any unwanted or unrelated sub-plot which makes this story enough strong for a reader to always remember this book even after reading 1000s of novels. The writing style is great which makes the narration very powerful. Author haven't complicated things but kept it very simple and just concentrated of telling a story rather than pretending to be a literati. Even when the book is 270 pages thick, not a single sentence seems to be inserted without purpose. The story is up to the mark and soft twists and turns makes it more crisp.

The character of protagonist, Rhea, is very powerful and delighting which holds you right from the beginning. Her feminism is used so beautifully by the author that I would say I have never read a book with such a strong female protagonist ever. Her interaction with all the other characters is so well handled that you can actually imagine her world. Satya, Krishnam and Dr. Vishnukant- all the other characters are also evolved skillfully. The characterization speaks a lot about author's potential. I liked how the tantra knowledge is departed through conversation between two characters. Also, the philosophical content in the book is nicely embedded which definitely leaves an impact on the reader's mind. This book is like a self-help genre in form of a fiction- what can be better than this? I give this novel 4.5 stars and rate it as one of the best books of this year.

Thanks.

The story begins in a quiet Ashram in Varanasi, where a Tantric takes in an orphan girl Rhea and ordains her in his order. Rhea was 8 years when she steps into the Ashram. And she steps out as a 30 plus year old woman. The story revolves around her and Krishnam- the son of the tantric, their love, essence of tantra and sacrifices.

Why this book is relevant today?

This book talks about Tantra, in the easiest possible way one can. Over the years, due to the ignorance and selfish motives of a few , Tantra has been attached to black magic and the word evil has somehow been attached to it. In this book, Rhea the protagonist goes through various slurs starting from her school days where her classmate would not really accept her, considering where she came from. But the writer has throughout the book explains successfully that Tantra is a way of reaching oneness through Sadhna and surrender.

Through all the characters the writer talks about Tantra and its significance. So, to someone like us, who belong to this time and space, this book gives us a glimpse of our own heritage which we have somewhere forgotten or taken for granted. To know ourselves better is why this book, though on Tantra is a must read.

The characters

The most beautiful and poignant character is that of Rhea’s. She is brave, independent, has a mind of her own and also a deep feminine side which she carries with equal grace. However as you read through the book, you would wish that the minor characters like Chander, Neel or the friends and patients that Rhea meets throughout the book could have been given a bigger space, because each one was equally intriguing. But on a second thought, this book can actually have a second part.

Why I recommend this book

Read this for the innate wisdom that this book holds. Through Rhea, the author has very delicately held a string of ancient wisdom that holds true till now. This book will take you through a journey that might begin in an Ashram in Varanasi but might end within yourself.
This weekend pick this book. You might just find an answer to something you are looking for.

Rhea is an orphan who is taken in by Satya Guru who runs Shaktidham, a house of Tantra. It is soon discovered that Rhea has some powers of her own. As she grows up under the guidance of Satya Guru, she cannot help but fall in love with her Guru’s son, Krishnam. But as her life would have it, Satya choses her to succeed him and Krishnam leaves the country. On one hand Rhea’s love for Krishnam only increases with time and on the other hand she bears the burden of the curse that has affected generations. Being the first woman in charge, will she be able to break the curse?

Rhea is an amazing protagonist. She is a strong individual who tackles things as they are thrown at her. Her character really shines through as she develops from an eight year old orphan to a grown and matured woman. The author has done a great job in fleshing out her character. Satya, Krishnam, Vishnukant, Neel and Netra are all characters that add to the story. While Satya’s character is also central to the story, others are there in a supporting role. In any case, all of these characters have been developed well too.

The plot was quite simple and I guess the author’s agenda with this book was to put forward the concept of Tantra to common people and remove any misconceptions about it. Tantrics are shown as normal people with normal lives. They live their lives as the rest of us do only that they practice Tantra which is a combination of science and spirituality. But that is where the book failed me. On one hand I found the plot to be simplistic and on the other hand once I finished reading the book, I am not sure I really understand Tantra completely either, only the very basics. Otherwise the characters and the author’s expert narrative makes this book quite a page turner.

Please visit http://guptakaushal.blogspot.in/2016/... to read the complete review of the book.

I recently read The Tantric Curse, a book by author Anupama Garg. The book is about the Tantra Vidya and it's authentic application and usage, yes the authentic way in which it was meant to be adopted, functioned and presented.

The book is an attempt to unearth some realities leaving the misconceptions behind and burst the myths related to the age old Tantra Vidya, it also talks about how the Tantra Vidya is being maligned by fake sadhaks resulting only in the increased hatred rather fear towards the Tantra Vidya with the trust level reaching the nadir.

Tantra Vidya is only being seen in poor light, viewed wrongly and is in a dreadful state, the book is an attempt at bringing the Tantra Vidya to life again, the way it was promised, with justifications clearing the popular misconceptions of it being some sort black magic that is used to cause more harm than good to anyone and the prominence that it deserves with promise.

The cover of the book is visually hypnotic, you will get hooked on to the book right from the moment you see it.

According to me, the book is for almost everyone, no matter if you are interested in occult sciences like Tantra Vidya or not and should be read by anyone who is interested in reading something that involves fiction, mythology or occult science.

Got this book on kindle unlimited and was very impressed by the cover.
It is hypnotising. So thought of picking this up and reading it.
The entire plot of the story or the "curse" is revealed in a few paragraphs on page 258 and 259.
The rest of the book does not have a single running storyline. There are multiple short scenes of different people and their problems which the main character Rhea or Satya solve and some philosophy associated with it.
About 40% of the book is just philosophy masquerading under stories. I found some resemblance to "The Monk who sold his Ferrari" in these parts wherein some philosophical concept is told in the form of a fictional story.
Then there is the part where Rhea talks about positive and negative thoughts and that thought vibrations manifest as our reality since the future is only probabilistic. This part seemed like an excerpt from "The Secret".
The first interesting event that got me hooked was on page 115 where Rhea gets struck by Bhairava. I thought the plot might get interesting from then on. But I was wrong. That sub-plot immediately fizzled out with Rhea travelling to all the shakthi peeths and seeking blessings of everyone including Bhairava.
The comes Dr Vishnukant's entry. There are more sub-plots revolving around the patients who come to his hospital.
He does the unspeakable, yet Rhea doesn't seem affected by it at all.
The ending of the book has the explanation of the curse and how it was broken. This seemed quite abrupt.
Not sure what the author wanted to convey in this book. I got a basic glimpse of the world of Tantra and sadhana. Apart from that, the sub stories which make up most of the book just act as fillers. All in all a very passable book.

The Tantric Curse
By Anupama Garg
Review By Ila Garg

The Tantric Curse, a novel by Anupama Garg, is published by Rupa Publications. The cover shows two well-defined eyes and the fire symbol on the forehead is much noticeable. Next, I can see a white silhouette of the girl in the centre. Huge eyes amidst geometric patterns creates an hypnotising effect. The colour combination of red, black and white is appealing and at once, transverse you into the world of tantra.

If you stare at the cover for too long, you might, well, be forced to keep staring at it. Ah, don’t get scared, but the cover of this book seemed to have a hypnotising effect on me, and I was instantly drawn towards the two big eyes and the white silhouette of the girl. A good start one may say, signifying that the cover stands true to the theme of the story – Tantra.

Interestingly, Anupama Garg, the author, has been trained under a renowned Tantric, Baba Batuk Nath ji, which adds an altogether different dimension to the book. Tantra as a subject in India is surrounded by myths and controversies. It is often termed as dangerous to the society, a pre-conceived notion that does not tend to go away easily. The reason can be attributed to the fact that there are many practitioners who have used the knowledge of Tantra for their own selfish deeds, thus maligning the art. ‘The Tantric Curse’ intends to shed light on all misconceptions, clearing our thoughts and bringing Tantra to us in a refreshing and sacred perspective.

Rhea is the protagonist of the story. After the sudden demise of her parents, eight year old Rhea comes to Shaktidham. Satya, the guru of Shaktidham, allows her to live there and loves her like his own daughter. He soon realizes that Rhea is special, and has the power to foresee the future. He decides to make her his disciple, and imparts her with knowledge of Tantra that he possesses. Satya’s son, Krishnam, is a few years older to Rhea, and loves to spend time with her. The feeling is mutual, as they share their stories, dreams, desires and aspirations with each other. As time passes by, love grows between the two. Krishnam makes her feel like a woman, exploring her sexuality, and instigating a passionate fire between them. Rhea wants to be with him, forever. When he leaves Shaktidham, her heart is still glued to him, knowing that he would always belongs to her.

Tantra is an art that should be worshipped. Anupama Garg brings out several facets of this art that most of us are unaware of. Through the protagonist Rhea, her teacher Satya, and her lover, Krishnam, the author imparts pieces of knowledge about Tantra. The use of meditation, the fruits of Sadhana and the meaning of Kundalini Yoga are briefly described, inviting the readers to learn more about them.

Rhea is a calm, level – headed and mature girl. The book depicts her journey from a little girl to a responsible adult, highlighting the challenges that she faced on her way, and showcasing the rewards that she deserved. She is there in almost all the pages of the book, which strengthens her character, but does not give much emphasis on the others, perhaps, apart from Satya. Krishnam disappears halfway into the book, and only makes an appearance towards the end. Other characters like Rhea’s and Krishnam’s friends come and go for brief periods of time, and are not able to make any lasting impression.

The author tries to introduce a few twists in the course of the story, like the moment when Rhea was attacked by the evil Tantric Bhairava. Though she braves the situation, and with the help of Satya and Krishnam she was able to save her life, I found it difficult to digest that the transformation of Bhairava came across quicker than expected. Dr. Vishnukant’s entry into the plot added another twist, as he slowly became obsessed with Rhea, trying everything to hold her back to him. I found it tough to comprehend that despite Rhea being fully aware of Vishnukant’s feelings towards him, and his sexual advances which she didn’t like, why did she still continue living with him. Perhaps, it was her own way to let him know that however he may try, she can never be his, as her past, present and future was devoted towards Krishnam. However, that doesn’t convince me much.

‘TheTantric Curse’ holds promises, with an unconventional backdrop. The initial chapters are riveting and don’t let you keep the book down. However, as the story progresses, the plot seems to drag a bit, and often sounds preachy. The book does have potential, but fails to linger on to you once you finish it. This is a decent one time read, and can be picked up for some valuable lessons on Tantra and the art of living life with love, peace and happiness.

Usually we choose a book to read; by reading its review or if it’s by our favorite author or maybe interesting blurb, there are “n” number of reasons why we choose a particular book. But what if a book chooses you? Never heard or experienced? I am not referring about receiving book as gift…
I have been reading books since I can remember but I started reviewing them since past one and half year or so. But I have never been so startled when I started to read this particular book. When I got mail, asking if I am interested in reviewing The Tantric Curse, I was bit skeptical. Tantra, magic always interested me, but had never read anything about it. I goggled about the book and I got interested.
When I received it, first thing which caught my attention was the book cover. When I started reading it, slowly I realized this THE book which I needed at this moment and I am happy I have read it.

On an amavasya night, eight-year old Rhea mysteriously lands at the doors of Shaktidham, a Tantric house of worship, in a trance. Realizing that she is blessed with unusual faculties, the guru of Shaktidham, Satya, chooses her as a disciple over his own son, Krishnam, to carry on his lineage, a privilege previously bestowed only to males. But the lineage has been cursed for generations, and it is up to Rhea to either break the curse or perish in the attempt.
Will she succeed in her endeavor or will her love for Krishnam become an obstacle in her path? The Tantric Curse, an unusual story set in the world of the Tantra – that aims to dispel most of the myths about the practice – will keep you spellbound till the very last page.

Is The Tantric Curse fact or fiction? The Tantric Curse, one might feel is too true to be a fiction if you believe in magic /tantra and if you don’t, then you might feel otherwise.
Plus points of the book: detailed explanations of Indian festivals, why and how are they celebrated, detailed information and meaning of hymns and mantras, and are explained in context of the story. It is so well blended with the story that you will not feel any part is introduced suddenly or abruptly.
People usually associate tantra with black magic and occult and this very conception is cleared through this book. This book is a must read and in today’s current scenario it’s necessary to explore ourselves, know and conquer our fears, insecurity and move ahead.
This book is not only a good read but also imparts good information about Indian festivals, tantra, black magic, spirituality and holistic approach to life.
The characters, be it Rhea, Krishnam, Satya or Dr. Vishnukant are well-etched. But the only part which I found difficult to understand is the part where Dr. Vishnukant forces himself on Rhea. Rhea being such a powerful person, how can she allow that to happen?
Also some of characters, who had come to Shaktidham or to Rhea for consultations, after recovery, their stories, are left mid-way. I would have loved it if something was written about how their life progressed after their healing.
Other than these two points I loved the book, awesome read, unique topic, well written. I am indeed happy that I read this book at right juncture of my life.

"The Tantric Curse" is an amazingly written book by Anupama Garg, that decodes a lot of myths prevailing our society. It deliver some exceptionally suited and well related logical explanations to the subject.

Quoting Wikipedia-
Tantra (Sanskrit: तन्त्र), also called Tantrism and Tantric religion, is an ancient Indian tradition of beliefs and meditation and ritual practices that seeks to channel the divine energy of the macrocosm or godhead into the human microcosm,[1] to attain siddhis andmoksha.

Through a well knitted love story, author goes on to describe the beliefs and practices regarding Tantra, amidst the conversations. The story of Rhea and Krishnam, vibrates the cords of a reader's heart. The fiction and mythology, in this book, is blended beautifully.

The narration is done in an amazing way. It grips the reader. The narration actually makes this book a page turner. With the great level of intellect hidden inside, the reader keeps craving for more. So, some readers may find this book ending entirely too soon.
The issue of feminism is raised aptly, via the protagonist Rhea. She is portrayed strongly. Her character is adorable. The overall characters are spanned impressively. The sequence of incidents presented by the author is well knit.

It was astonishing to see, that alongwith explaining the science of Tantra, the author also explained the ill-effects of Tantra. It is similar to providing a balance to literary universe.

At times, the book has self-help material in it. I liked the way Satya imparted his knowledge to Rhea. Consider his quote about Vidya (Education)

"Vidya is only a tool; it aids you to bring about a change within yourself. Don't hold on to this tool, only discover what lies beyond it." (Page- 124)

The writing style of the author is convincing, which was a must for this kind of book. The readers needs to be open minded in order to accept this book. The reader may have to accept the fact that some things happen for a reason: unknown reasons sometimes, to enjoy this craft work.

The language used is simple and effective. The twists and suspense in the book, keep the readers hooked to the story. The book is edited and designed well. The simplicity is intriguing.

The only thing that could hurt the impression of the book are the prejudices it brings along with its title and cover. Praise the Lord, this work needs to be read without any prejudiced thought.

Rhea is a eight year old girl who by destiny reaches the tantric, Satya. He becomes her Guru and Rhea begins her journey as a tantric while being nurtured by the love and guidance of Satya and his son Krishnam. Her growing-up years are marked with love, friendship and all emotions of what any girl would grow through. She continues to learn and excel in several arts as well as life's lessons. At a point where the purpose of her birth is challenged, her life situations are brought into a turmoil. How Rhea deals with it after all the years' of learning and self-realization is the rest of the story.

The book is not about the rituals of attaining mystical powers. It is neither about the actual tantric practices. It is about how an ordinary person leading an ordinary life can be a tantric. It reveals how love, lust, anger, confusions, sex (pre-marital and multiple partners), alcohol, parties and fashion - can all be a part of a person's life but still he/she be connected to divinity, at the same time.

The best explanation about tantra that I liked in the book is that tantra is different from other spiritual streams in that it neither advocates abstnience nor over-indulgence. When the feeling of lust emerges between Rhea and Krishnam, at first it may seem unexpected in a book as this. However, as the story progresses, it makes much sense in the whole context. The romantic episodes between them are written in a beautiful way that a reader develops a unique admiration and respect for the art of love-making.

Along with the plot, several spiritual aspects like chakras, cosmic energy, sound vibrations, elements of nature etc are discussed. Explained in basic terms, a beginner in the subject might certainly find it helpful. Several conversations in the book offer thoughtful explanations about many different intricacies of life. Here are a few:

"...I don't think that any man is a failure unless he fails to succeed in something he loves to do." (Page 88)

"....It is perceived that the greatest power human beings have is their ability to think. However there is another significant aspect, which is the capacity to elevate oneself spiritually." (Page 157)

Tantra and Tantrics have always be subjected to judgement. Hearing the word Tantra, the face that will come to the minds of the readers would be that of fire, blood and sex. Anupama Garg throughout her book Tantric Curse tries to break the prejudice and show the world what Tantra and Tantric practice is really about.

The book is the story of Rhea, who enters the Tantric world through destiny at the age of eight, when she lost her parents. Shaktidham, the Tantric abode of Satya and his son Krishnam becomes Rhea's new home. Krishnam becomes her playmate who in turn becomes her soulmate. Rhea faces the judgmental attitude of the society towards the Tantrics when she goes out to the outer world form he studies. A backstory of her friends Netra, Barkha and Neel is connected to Rhea's life. Rhea reaches a crucial stage of life when she decides to take a break from Krishnam to attain Tantric bliss. Then we see her life in London where she is uprooted from everything that she lived with. The character of Vishnu was not fitting into the whole scenario. Will she succeed? Will she rekindle her relation with Krishnam? Will her friends' life affect her? What is the Tantric curse she is destined to break? Tantric curse gives the answer to these questions.

The book breaks the pre set notion. The storyline has got substance. Nevertheless, the chapters are not well defined. Some chapters ends abruptly giving a feel that a portion got deleted unknowingly. Characters of Rhea, Satya and Krishnam are well crafed. Rest of the characters need thorough homework. The book stands out with a strong language. The society to tends to connect Tantra with black magic. Through the book, authoress tries to enlighten the readers with the essence of Tantra. The classes Rhea give are informative.
The climax had nothing novel to contribute to the readers. The real relevance of the title is not reflected in the book except for the climax. A build up for the same should have been done.

Verdict: A different story which needed a little more developmental edit.

We, human beings, have abused every power since time immemorable. Be it the power of fire, atom or Tantra, man has misused everything for its selfish motives and Tantra Vidya is no exception. Like any other form of energy, Tantra also has the power for both; creation and destruction. And it is us who have to decide how to use these for the betterment of the whole Universe.

The Tantric Curse is a book which debunks many myths about Tantra that prevail in the society. Talk about Tantra or black magic and immediately the listener would curl his/her nose expressing disgust about the practice. It is so wrongly viewed in our society that people do not want to be much indulged in it. However, this book clears a number of myths surrounding Tantra while embedding everything in a very interesting and intriguing story.

A nice read and recommended for those who would like to have some insights on Tantra Vidya. Just a small suggestion though. Read the book without any prejudices and you will definitely love it.

On reading the debut novel by Anupama Garg, at first it seemed like this was her own story fabricated into fiction, knowing her background as a disciple of a renowned Tantric. The book is not another religious lecture but a love story in the background of Tantra. Written in an elaborate way to describe the positive energies of Tantra, popularly considered as mystic dark magic, and its correlation with sciences, one gets to know the depth of spiritual knowledge through The Tantric Curse. That it’s not black and white ever, just grey, be it Tantra, friendship or love. Only if the story had been more strong enough in plugging the loopholes! For example why Krishnam simply walked away when Rhea asked him to or how every action of Rhea was somehow justified.

(Read book reviews and more at my blog Ethereal Jinxed.)

At the end of the book, it felt like I had done a PhD on Tantra. And luckily, I had not discarded the book basis its name and chose to read the paperback copy.

Like others I too had misconceptions about Tantra. After reading the tantric curse not only has my opinion changed but I can see life in a very different perspective. Anupama has been able to explain Tantra and life in very simple words. The book and interview reflect the author's uncomplicated thoughts. This is possible only when a person has apt knowledge of the subject. There are so many phrases in the book which I have personally turned into proverbs which I use while explaining things to people and some of them just motivate and inspire you to face all challenges of life bravely. The book very strongly conveys the fact that there are consequences to all actions and to make the right choices in life wisdom and faith is very important.Congratulations to Anupama for venturing into a genre which has never been presented in such a captivating story.I can relate to Rhea and would love to have a Krishnam in my life.

I have limited knowledge of religion and similar stuff like tantra. Even I believed tantra to be somewhat like black magic or sorcery kind of a thing. But the author has described tantra from a entirely different dimension which has completely changed my mindset towards tantra. Its a terrific read and I didn't feel like keeping it down till it was over. I am amazed and surprised by the author's vast knowledge on tantra. Thumbs up to you Ms. Garg!! I am keen to get some more thrilling reads from you. 'Must Read'.

Not sure why everyone rated it 4 or 5 stars.

Most poorly written and unnecessarily lengthy book I have ever read. I don't see much story, but a lot of scenes added which are not related to the plot, making the book appear patchy.

The name Krishnam appears so many times, I am now sick of this name. Infact I am irritated typing it in the review. I never thought, I would leave such a bad review to a book, but there's a first time for everything.

I'm sorry if I'm too bold Anupama. You need to change the editor if you are planning to write another book.

Review at The Tales Pensieve

I feel that The Tantric Curse is a decent novel. It is narrated in a simple language and keeps the pages turning, even though the pace wavers. I liked the character sketch of Rhea, and the detailing of her growing up. It has an interesting cover design, and I couldn’t see any editing mistakes that stood out. It is something that I might read again.
