The normal bustle and rush, the everyday routine came to an abrupt end on one early Spring day in America. Beth and her husband, Jack, were miles apart, yet they both immediately knew that something extremely disastrous had occurred. This was not merely a lights out event, this was the loss of the entire power grid, nearly all transportation stopped dead, planes had fallen from the sky.

Their grown daughters and their families, stranded in widespread Texas locations awoke to the world turned upside down. With communications non existent, no one knew exactly what had occurred. Each sister had no idea if the other or if their parents were safe. There was one thing they all were sure of, they must find a way to come together, across the miles. Their best chance for survival would be their unity.

This family would be tossed into a dangerous and challenging new reality. The biggest task for Jack and Beth and their children would be how to stay alive in this new and hostile world. The consequences of the event, the confusion and frustration of the population would quickly turn to desperation. It would take all the courage and ingenuity that this group could muster to survive these times.

About the author

J. Richardson

17 books23 followers
J.Richardson was born in what she refers to as her beloved Texas. She has lived there all of her life and raised her family. Her children, grandchildren and one great-grandchild are scattered across the state. These days, she and her husband of 47 years, split their time between home and their summer cabin in Colorado.

Her first e-book was published this year. A life filled with rich experiences and small adventures has been the inspiration for her writing. Much of that experience derived from the partnership with her spouse in building four homes in four different locations, from scratch; from a log house in the woods of east Texas, to a lakehouse and a farmhouse, and finally, the cabin in Colorado. J. says that she is a fascinated observer of people and their endless diversity. She believes the internet is an amazing source of information and her favorite part of writing is the research.

A pen name claims ownership of her fiction writings because they are often close facsimiles of her friends and family. She admits, however, they are just as often, products of her imagination and characters she has known. The author's favorite reads are mystery and humor, lately her passion and interest is in the fictional and real life details of prepping for disaster. She quotes, "I have strong political and patriotic views, but try to avoid them in my novels because anger is not my forte'. I always look forward to hearing from my readers."

Oh.My.Goodness. We have a problem.

I want to be clear that I enjoyed the characters, found the storyline enjoyable, and the dialogue seemed true. Just out of curiosity, and to see if there is any improvement, I'll probably read the sequel.

But, oh dear, there are so many problems in the writing of the book that it makes me cringe. I seriously considered snarking on the book, but I just can't. Perhaps the author needs some guidance, so let's begin.

Sexist
The author does a great job of including the disabled and gay characters in the book. What is surprising is how women are treated. Despite handiness with guns, the women are relegated to the home front.

"...we have to try to scavenge for more lumber. The women will have to be responsible for cleaning the place."

"...I imagine you and the girls will need to get together some lunch."

"The men, and boys look at the guns and ammo cache..."

This is all the more shocking as the author is a woman.

Vocabulary.
Who is this Marshall Law? Do you, perhaps, mean martial law? Please learn the difference. In this genre it's kind of important.

Learn the difference between affect and effect.

Grammar.
Here are some gems:

"Lee and Cody follows Beth inside..." (Lee and Cody FOLLOW Beth inside)
"The first two months following the event rolls into four..." (ROLL into four)
"the artificial tree is drug out..." (DRAGGED out)

I could go on and on

Point of View
The point of view the author has taken is nothing I have ever seen before. It is definitely not first, second, or third person. Or omniscient in any way. My advice would be to learn how to write in the 3rd person omniscient. This will help you avoid grammar mistakes. "she ran" instead of "she runs" and so forth.

You have something here. Learn more about writing. Maybe try an online or in-person writer's group. I think you could have a little more success and more satisfaction with the resulting product.

Would I recommend this to a person who likes TSHTF novels? Yes
Would I recommend this to an editor? No
Would I recommend this to a school-teacher? Not unless they are a tolerant fan of TSHTF novels
Would I recommend this to a man in a bear suit? Perhaps. It is, after all, an adventure, and a guy running around in a bear suit probably has a lot of adventures.

I enjoyed the story, but the grammar and punctuation is atrocious. The author may have taken a box of commas, and sprinkled them at random, with no rhyme or reason. I can’t even give three stars to a book that has not been edited.
