A fun read by Hutson, and one of his more coherent plot lines to boot. This starts off during the London Blitz of 1940 with some guy presenting a folder named 'Genesis' to Churchill down in his wartime bunker. Obviously, it is some sort of secret research concerning the war effort. Next, flash forward to today (circa 1985 when this was published) to the Hacket family living in London; the wife (Sue) laying vigil for her dying father, the husband sleeping with a co-worker, and their daughter at home with a sitter. Two men enter the Hacket's home and brutally murder the daughter and sitter.

We know these story arcs will converge somewhere, but it takes quite some time. Hutson gives us short flashbacks to the 40s but the main story concerns the Hacket family. The death of their daughter and Sue's father drive her over the edge, especially when she learns the night of the murder old hubbie was with his 'mistress'. Sue packs her bags and heads to her sister's house in a small town outside of London. While this is going on, people are being murdered in a grizzly manner in the small town by various children seemingly with the consent of their parents. What the hell is going on?

So much for the sitrep. This was a fun, trashy read as you should expect from Hutson, with lots of sex and violence. Also, as usual, this could have used a better editor; one scene for example has a guy stab someone, leaving he knife in and running away, and the very next he somehow has a knife in his hand again. Still, this was one of the better Hutson novels I have read. Looking for some trashy 80s horror? While I would not call this a classic, if you like this kind of stuff, not a bad read at all. 3 sleazy stars!

This book is kind of like being an old age pensioner thrown in the scrum as hooker against The All Blacks. Horrifyingly unsettling. But since your watching and not participating, it's bloody fantastic. This book has so many parts that make your skin crawl and feel uneasy, you just can't put it down. That's what a horror novel should do to you. Almost all the characters have some demented flaw that weaves it's way into the greater insanity. I really have to revisit some of Mr. Hutson's other books I've read in the past. Like Spawn and Death Day. I gave those four stars when, like this, they should of had five.

It all starts with a married couple under pressure of life. The wife's father is dying so the husband seeks out carnal attention else where. While they are out of the house, the babysitter and their little girl are horribly murdered. The wife moves to a small town to try to move on. The husband want's her back and revenge. He lands a teaching job in the same town as his wife and tries to heal the wounds. She want's another child. Problem is, the town's doctor is a raving loon continuing experiments in artificial insemination. Seems the kids he's created are a bit odd at times. People start to die.

This will not disappoint the avid horror reader that is sick of the watered down tripe they churn out these days. The ending is worth the price of the book alone. Bloody marvelous. You'll shiver and shake your head and think a bit more about contraceptives and celibacy.

Unapologetically brutal and non - pc; they don't write them like this anymore. Barrels along nicely, though the ending feels a bit rushed and is something of a letdown. It's also surprising how many times the word 'vagina' crops up. Old school horror that can still raise a taboo smile.

Another twisty tale from Mr Hutson !
This is only my second time reading a book by Shaun, this one was a slightly longer juicy tale of humans going that step to far in the name of science, war and legacy!

We mainly follow our protagonists Hackett, a school teacher having a fling with a secretary whilst his wife cares for her cancer stricken father. straight away you assume this guy is abit of a bleeding heart of woe is me, my wife if neglecting my needs. However an unfortunate event rocks his world, one night whilst he is at a late night 'meeting' and his wife is at the hospital caring for her father. Their young daughter Lisa is left at home with the baby sitter. A break-in happens, resulting in Hackett's wife coming home to flashing blue lights. Both the baby sitter and their young daughter were brutally assaulted and murdered...this sets off a series of events that even Hackett couldn't have predicted!

The affair was unknown until Hackett lashed out at his lover, feeling spurned on the day of Hackett's daughters funeral, she leaves a letter for his wife revealing all. Hackett's wife puts 2 and 2 together and realised the only reason he wasn't home was because of this affair. She puts the blame squarely on his shoulders, if he had been there things may have been different.

At this stage divorce or more death may be imminent! Both of them spiralling, Hackett's wife moves in with her sister to get some space. Later Hackett gets a new teaching role in the same area and tries to rebuild his marriage.

However it quickly becomes apparent something ain't right with some of these kids, including the nephew of Hackett's wife! Aggression, sadistic and blood lusting ankle biters !

This links back to a WW2 project Genesis that was being conducted for the war effort. Bringing it to modern day it appears someone has been continuing this work... without spoiling the final few chapters of twists and turns i was immensely surprised by how far Hackett's wife will go for the sake of hope and desperation. her motives become entwined with this mysterious doctor and the murderers from the start stalk down their prey. To lets say a 'Gripping' conclusion ! If you know, you know ;)

This is another one of his books that could have gone on longer for me, i could have read more tales of these weird kids. Told more about the experiments. It leaves the ending open to what ifs and what will happen next. I have to say i kind of liked it, it didn't need to wrap up to much as we only followed a few characters closely. It gives you enough to chew on throughout ! That ending though !

There's a fine line between horror and comedy. If the work is incompetent, the horror is funny, the comedy dull. 'Nemesis' might be the most incompetent horror novel I've ever read. Having said this, I encourage you to read it. Honestly, it must be read for this review to be believed.

There are three problems with this book: the prose, the pacing, and the plot. Shaun Hutson has never been known for elegance - his work inspired the comedy character Garth Marenghi - but, in this book, the prose is poor. Sentences are rarely balanced, the choice of words tone-deaf.

Pacing is another issue. Mr. Hutson likes to write scenes of sex and violence, but, in 'Nemesis', they slow the story. Bored with domesticity? Throw in a blowjob. Want to make the hero and his wife sympathetic? Describe the murder of their baby girl in painful detail.

Perhaps this is a matter of taste. Mr. Hutson makes no secret of his love for violence. If the reader finds his work distasteful, they should look elsewhere. Fair enough, we might say - but this view does nothing to excuse the plot. (I'm still not sure what the author was hoping to achieve.)

After their daughter's murder, the Hackets move to Hinkston, where children are receiving strange medicine. These relate to experiments in the Second World War, which appear in flashback - at the beginning. We learn nothing important from these scenes, which make them pointless.

The man who murdered their daughter follows the Hackets. He kidnaps them and means to kill them. First, he tries to rape Sue Hacket, pregnant with a 'modified' baby. Thus, when the killer does his deed, it takes an unexpected turn - putting a spin on the phrase 'getting your end away'.

Restraint is a sign of caution, which is wise. Had he been restrained, Mr. Hutson would have written a scary scene - but he indulges in comic-book gore and makes us laugh. Any scene in which a man loses half his penis to an super-foetus is just funny. (Heads turned on the bus as I giggled.)

In summary, I recommend 'Nemesis' - as an example of how horror goes wrong. These books are out of print, and with good cause - but a local second-hand bookshop sells many. I might be forced to raid the place. Comedic writing of this calibre cannot go to waste.

Todo sea for the horrror.

I've had a pile of Shaun Hutson novels I picked up over the years but hadn't got around to reading for ages, but they never made it to the top of my TBR pile. He's an author I've long wanted to like, as we have similar tastes in music and in football teams, but as a long term fan of Stephen King and Clive Barker, I can be nervous about approaching new horror authors, as it often feels as if I've peaked already.

The first novel of his I've picked up was "Nemesis", in the hope that being fairly well into a writing career that was already into double figures at that point, he may have worked past the errors and cliches that can mark early novels, especially in the horror and thriller genres, and find his own voice. That said, with little to base any comparison on, I don't know if this is the case, but I find myself hoping now, as this wasn't a great novel.

During the years of the Second World War, a project was conceived that may help the war effort, but after it resulted in some unpleasant outcomes, the project was shelved and the man behind it, who was reluctant to cease his work, was removed from the project in the most permanent of fashions. Years later, the town of Hinkston, a little outside of London, is home to some unpleasant events, with visitors to the town and those caught alone outside after dark not making it through the night.

Unknwingly, this is the place that Sue and John Hacket have chosen for their escape. Even had they known the truth about the town and the issues Sue's sister has with her son, they might have moved there anyway, as they were running away from the horrible murder of their young daughter, Lisa and the subsequent death of Sue's father. They also need to leave behind the affair John has had with a colleague and the chance to move to a new town seems the perfect chance to start over again.

One of the issues I had with "Nemesis" was that I never felt particularly absorbed in the story, as I never really knew what was going on. It's not until very late on that it becomes apparent that some of the strands of the plot are actually related to each other and quite frankly, by the time that all happened, I didn't really care, as all the other failings of the novel had made themselves known. For it is quickly apparent that Hutson is not a great writer, in addition to not being a great storyteller and the whole novel is guided more by his obsessions than any real talent.

The novel isn't particularly full of coherent plot, but it does have a huge cast of characters, many of whom don't stay long, some because they are nothing but victims, but many because they serve little purposes and are discarded as quickly as they arrive. Even the ones that do have important parts in the plot have very little personality or much that sets them apart from anyone else. The other issue is that so much of the motivation is sexual and the erections and stiff nipples all over the place rather got in the way of everything else.

Being a short novel, the one thing I can say for "Nemesis" is that it is over quite quickly. As unpleasant as Hutson's writing is in many ways, he does tend to write in short chapters, which gives the impression that things are moving along at pace. James Patterson does the same and, I suspect, for the same reason, trying to distract the reader with the next thing in the hope that we don't notice how superficial and pointless everything is. In this case, much like a Patterson novel, I was glad to see the finish, even if I had stopped caring how it would end, only when.

I used to read Shaun Hutson back in the eighties as a teenager. I'm now 53 and have always wanted to revisit some of Shaun's books and catch up on the later ones that I missed.
You can tell Nemesis is a Hutson book as soon as you start reading. It's depraved, full of gore and shocks and is everything you want from this type of fiction.
However, I must say I was disappointed in some of the mistakes in this novel. I don't know whether it is down to Shaun Hutson or indeed the publishers for their lack of editing or proofreading in this reprint by Caffeine Publishing.
I'm not one of those readers that search for mistakes in a book as I believe that all authors are human and make mistakes, as do proofreaders. You always get the odd typo slip through.
I did get quite annoyed with the mistakes in this one though. There were quite a few typos, which I can overlook, but on one page one of the main characters had a different name and not even a name from another character in the book. It was just the wrong name!
Again I got past that mistake but then the same character stabbed someone with a scalpel and the scalpel remained embedded in that person. The character ran away and was caught and proceeded to brandish the scalpel to protect himself - The same scalpel that was still embedded in the person chasing them.
I really did enjoy the story and the pace is terrific, but the mistakes left me feeling a bit annoyed by the end. I would be interested to see if the same mistakes are in the original 1992 version. I specifically mean the typos as the too obvious character mistakes lie with Hutson.
I'll still read Hutson as his books are just too entertaining to discard, but I hope I don't come across too many of the same sorts of mistakes. I must admit I never came across mistakes in previous books by the same author or was I just too young and naive to care.
I have another reprint by Caffeine, so I'll review that one in the future and we shall see.

Good horror story that kept me engrossed. Very gory and sickening. Horrible really but i carried on reading to the end. The story line was intresting though. I dont know how i read such a gruesome book. I question myself.

Gorry and repetitive

A bit to gory and not enoughof a story line for me.
Shaun Hudson is good a description writing and at times taking you in, however due to the repetitive manner with particular characters.
