Terri Adams loves football. In fact, she's one of the Sweet Valley Gladiator's biggest fans. She's also the biggest fan of Ken Matthews, the team's quarterback. Terri thinks Ken has everything going for him - he's good-looking and popular, and he's led the Gladiators to an undefeated season. Then one rainy night, Ken is in a terrible car accident that leaves him blind.
His football career is over, and even worse, his friends are so uncomfortable about his blindness they avoid him. Ken would be miserable if it weren't for Terri. She's the one person who is always there when he needs her. But when Ken realizes he's falling in love with her, he's convinced that she could never return his feelings. Can Ken and Terri ever be more than friends?
Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
So I always wondered why Ken was staring so dumbly into space on the cover and then after reading the synopsis on the back, I realize it's because he's now BLIND 😭 WTH Francine?! You're gonna go and make the star of the football team blind now? 😭
So anyway, Terri is the gal who keeps track of statistics for the football team, so of course she's gonna develop a massive crush on Ken. But meanwhile, that snake Amy Sutton has been scheming to get with him...until he gets into an awful car accident and loses his sight in the process 😭The doctors say he MAY regain his vision after the swelling in his brain goes down?? Umm what? I'm no doctor and I'm not sure how that all works but that sounds kinda nuts?
So while all his old friends are awkward AF around him now, Terri takes it upon herself to spend every free moment with him and essentially be his guide dog 🤣 Will Ken OPEN HIS EYES to seeing how perfect Terri is for him? Will Ken please just regain his eyesight already so I can stop fretting about him?
Anyway...another day, another drama at Sweet Valley High. A solid 3 winks for this one 👁👁👁
This might be one of my least favourite SVH books so far, not only does it read like a badly written fanfiction by a 12 year old but it also shows the real side to some of our constant main characters. Looking first at Amy, I get she's upset Ken got hurt, but overall her attitude toward Terri was disgusting, then there's Terri who is so hellbent on stealing Ken's heart she'll spend all her extra time with him to make him love her, making him in his most vulnerable state completely dependent upon her. Ken also treats this time she invests in him as his right, demanding more of it when she says she needs to spend some time focusing on her own school work. The one character we actually get to see a nicer side of, is actually Jess. And who would've thought that. It's sad the accident and all but I think this one just missed the mark.
That Fatal Night Ken makes some big play or the other (only I’m not Terri so I can’t tell you what it is. Sports just really make me zone out) and he wins the game for the Gladiators. Terri’s been checking him out (not just his game), because she does the statistics for the game (this really wasn’t a thing at my high school). Then John comes over and then there’s a party at Amy’s. Terry wonders if should she go. Then decides that yes, it’ll be the opportunity she’s been looking for to say something to Ken. (Raising my eyebrows. Really? Has she not heard about Amy?)
So, she goes to this party, and Amy waste no time “staking her claim”. She marks her territory by kissing Ken in front of everyone (which is pretty BOLD! The boldest behavior I saw in high school was all the bumping and grinding teens did at the skating rink after hours after the “skating” part was over). Ken is a little embarrassed by it because his dating Amy has been casual and it hasn’t been that long. Amy goes to get Ken a drink and he goes over to talk to Terri and some more kids. The other kids slyly walk off leaving Terri and Ken alone and she’s just getting over her shyness around him when Amy comes back and practically sits in his lap. So she leaves, goes to the bathroom, locks herself in, and starts crying.
Winston and Maria need to get home and instead of having them take the bus, Ken offers to drive them. Terri finishes her cry and asks Winston for a lift and he offers her a ride in Ken’s car. It starts coming down. Ken drops off Winston and Maria at his house. Then he takes Terri home. She invites him in but he tells her he needs to get back to the party and drives off. Ken then sees another car coming down the hill and he swerves but hits a tree. Everything goes black.
Jessica’s date is a jerk (no surprise there) and she asks Liz and Todd for a ride. On the way home, they notice a familiar-looking white car and bumper sticker. The police verify that it is indeed Ken whose been in the accident.
Back at Amy’s house, she’s fantasizing about her and Ken (the new Power Couple) when Jess, Elizabeth, and Todd show back up and tell her about the accident. Winston tells her the next day Terri was the last one in the car with him. Amy makes up her mind right then that Ken’s accident is Terri’s fault (ummm okaaaay. Was she trying to feel him up while he was driving and he got so turned on he swerved and hit a tree?) I bet this is what scene is going on in Amy’s head.
At the hospital, Jessica and Amy run into Ken’s parents. Mrs. Matthews tell them Ken survived but the doctors won’t let them in because they aren’t family. Amy’s relieved because she was just going for show and didn’t have any intention of actually going in the room. (She’s more interested in playing the role of the grieving girlfriend than she is about Ken). Amy says she’s glad it won’t affect his football playing and JESSICA actually tells her she should just be glad he’s alive (It wasn’t *that* long ago she was making plays for him. Is this guy passed around or what? And they talked about Annie Whitman SMH. Doesn’t Lila end up with him later too? Just no words).
Terri is clueless that the object of her desire is in the hospital and gets a rude awakening from Amy. She runs into the hallway and cries (of course she blames herself. Well Terri your ghost shouldn’t have been in the car blowing in his ear and taunting him sexually).
Amy does go to see Ken (she’s got to keep appearances up after all) and he’s covered in bandages. Then on the day he leaves they tell him they’re taking the bandages off and he’s like “Aren’t you going to take them off my face?” Turns out he’s blind. (Ok what doctor leaves this till the last minute to tell somebody when they’re about to be discharged. Even the male doctors in SV are HORRIBLE! Wouldn’t a better time have been a couple of hours or so after the shock of the accident? Then come to think of it unless his whole face was covered up wouldn’t you have noticed if your eye sight was missing, YEAH, you’d notice that).
The tell him it’s a chance he’ll see again, but then there’s a chance he won’t if the swelling in his brain goes down. But should he be letting Ken go home though? Liz and Jess show up with a card that everyone at school signed and they tell him to read it. He goes through the motions like he’s about too but then confesses he’s blind. Elizabeth sends Jessica to go get a soda and she tries to console him. Amy shows up again and Jess gives her the news. She bolts out of there like someone lite a fire under her behind. (Is anyone *really* surprised? Amy honey it’s not contagious. He’s blind he doesn’t have leprosy). Since he’s damaged goods she tells Jessica not to tell him she was there. Amy why are you *here*? And I don’t mean just at the hospital, I mean in Sweet Valley PERIOD!
The next day Amy goes off on Terri and tells her it’s her fault that she astral-planned into Ken’s car and got him ran off the road and she cries (again). She tells Elizabeth she needs to see Ken -who is now at a *what to call this* -the book calls it a “blind camp”. I’ma call it rehab facility (that sounds a little less offensive than blind camp). Terri sees Ken (and starts to cry) and apologizes. He of course tells her it’s not her fault and they almost kiss but they’re interrupted because his time is up for visitation (
A month later, Ken is going to be released and is going back to SVH. He’s frustrated and MAD because people are going to look at him differently and he’s right they do immediately. Winston is leading him around by the arm. Amy avoids him in class and sits by Lila. The teachers aren’t used to teaching a blind student so when he gets out his recorder it’s interruptive. Ken makes his way to the football field and hears the new Quarterback Scott saying how Amy’s all on his tip now and of course, this pisses Ken off. (To this I shake my head and say Ken you didn’t have to be blind to see that that girl wasn’t faithful). . But Ken’s angel (Terri) comes over and she takes his mind off it by talking about football and starts telling him how the team is doing since he’s been in rehab. He honestly cares and it’s the first time he’s felt comfortable being around someone at the school. But then she offers to walk with him back to class and he gets offended and leaves.
She calls the Oracle (aka Liz) and she tells to try to get in Ken’s head (or rather walk in his shoes) and see what it’s like being blind by wearing a blindfold around the house. (If someone were to try to understand me by let’s say wearing a diabetic device every day that’s slightly painful to inject themselves to see what I go through I’d give them major points for that). So she starts to understand a little bit how frustrating it is for him.
She invites him to the beach and when he says he misses running she takes his hand and they run together (although personally the thought of running even on a beach and I can’t see where I’m going is very scary).
Ken starts to fall for Terri but like a lot of guys I know he’s stupid and starts pushing her away when she’s going out of her way to be nice to him, help him with his homework, and give him rides. He’s insecure at a concert when she leaves for a minute to talk to another guy.
Terri again consults the Great Oracle and she tells her if she doesn’t stop enabling Ken he’ll never learn to do things for himself. Terri tries to turn Ken down to help him with his homework (because she’s been letting hers slip) and he blows up at her and tells her to just leave. She blows back up at him and tells him she was just trying to help him out cause she loves him and storms out. He realizes he’s being an ass and he goes to the beach (by himself) and finds her, apologizes to her, and then kisses her passionately. He then tells her something corny like being with her is like seeing the sun set but what he’s actually seeing *is* the sunset. So I guess the magic of her love has brought back a little of his sight.
My Thoughts: Why oh why would they send Ken back to Sweet Valley High. Now I know I’m partially blind. Luckily the eye which my vision is strong in overpowers the one it’s very weak in so thus I know that today there are a BUNCH of things people can use who have no or very limited eye sight.
I didn’t go to rehab but I did have Vocational counselors come out and teach me probably the same thing Ken was taught. I remember learning about how to identify coins. My eyesight hadn’t gotten to this point in high school but even today (as an adult) if I’m out with one of my mothers and it only has to be a little dark, she’ll hook her arm in mine. And it will make me feel VERY crazy like I’m a little old woman or something. Sometimes I’ll get a little huffy like Ken. Thinking you don’t have to do that all the time. Even though I know she just doesn’t want me to slip up and fall. (Which yes embarrassingly I have done that too). But it can make you feel VERY insecure when you have to have a “seeing guide person”. This also happens for me in dark theatres. I have like ZERO perception vision in the dark. So I can tell you what Ken feels is VALID!
But going to Sweet Valley High (a school not equipped to teach blind students) is NOT! In order for Ken to go to Sweet Valley High, these teachers would have to be at least certified. (I think)They’d have to have special books for him. And these aren’t the days when maybe he could have a tablet with the textbooks in a Braille version. That just disturbed me his parent thought this was ok. I’m not even sure why he (himself) would want to go back to Sweet Valley High on one hand he doesn’t want to be thought of as “that guy” but then he feels awkward around everyone because he is blind. Just my personal opinion it probably would have been best had he gone to a school that was better suited to teach him and with students that were going through what he was. Sweet Valley High really not the most acceptable place to people with “differences”.
But I had to think this (as sad as it is) it took making Ken blind to make him a more interesting character. He was just SOOO one-dimensional! But as this is Sweet Valley and it’s already happening there will be a book were BOOM one day he’s gonna wake up and his sight will ba right back and he’ll be right back on the field leading the Gladiators to another victory. Scott will get demoted and Amy will be all in his face again. It’s gonna happen.
Although I’ll snatch Ken’s sight again myself if he doesn’t keep Terri. This girl actually practices being blind so she can understand him better. KEEP HER KEN! MARRY HER! With the chooses you have at SVH your not gonna do ANY better than her!
Terri for putting up with Ken’s attitude I give you all the props. Just don’t let him give you shit again and be a pushover for him and I think yal with be alright.
I’m not big on fictional (or real ones for that matter) love stories but this one for some reason I didn’t mind and actually found it a little touching. Its STRONG when you see a woman step in and love her man and be right there with him helping him cope with a handicap. This is the kind of woman I would have liked to be and the kind of man I would have wanted to have had I been given one.
Rating: 8 (possibly the highest to date I’ve given a SVH book) but the messing is STRONG!
I get why they went with Fatal as it's more dramatic but dude. No one dies, Ken just goes temporarily blind. Never did get what our artist had against Ken because poor Ken just never looks his best on his covers. Sigh. Anyway, this is the book where Amy makes a major play for Ken and he's decidedly uninterested. Until his accident and then he's kinda upset that Amy, who is well known for her shallowness to the point that it's a reason not!blind Ken lists as why he's not interested, drops him for his QB replacement. I really, really dislike SVH!Amy and this book does nothing to redeem her. She weasels out of visiting Ken at the hospital as often as she can, while still trying to play the tragically bereft girlfriend until Ken's blindness is revealed. Then she drops him pretty much completely. On the flipside, we have Terri Adams who seems fairly popular in the SVH B-list crowd. Naturally she's in love with Ken and after his accident the two bond without realizing how the other one feels about them until Liz gives Terri a small push.
This is pretty much one of those books that's fine for what it is. In this case, it's the book where Ken goes blind. Terri's nice enough and I like that while she's shy around Ken, she's pretty sure of herself in everything else. She knows her football (I told you before, Ken likes his women passionate) and she's relatively at ease even around the popular clique. I did laugh when Terri's hair is described as short even though the cover art depicts it as longer than Jessica's, and hers is frequently described as shoulder length or long.
I have to wonder if the title of this book was originally a misprint- maybe it was supposed to be That Fateful Night? Because nobody dies (and that's not a spoiler)- nothing fatal occurs, nobody/nothing dies except for whatever mildly positive feelings anyone may have for Amy Sutton. At any rate, this story is about how once Ken loses his sight in a bad car accident, he finally notices regular girl Terri, the statistician for the football team, who has been pining over Ken forever. Of course, Terri winds up somehow becoming close enough friends with Elizabeth Wakefield to make her a sounding board and confidante for her crush on Ken and its impending drama as he navigates life without eyesight. Will Ken get his sight back? Will Terri ever be mentioned in this series again? Probably and probably not. Two stars.
What even WAS this one? His sight returning suddenly at the end was ridiculous even after knowing it was coming from the moment Ken was told he was blind. The Amy story seemed to hint at some revelation about past traumas that...but then never revealed anything and left us assuming she's just a bitch for no reason. (Seriously, WHY is she the way she is? Why are her parents not interfering? How does she have friends!?) The little hint at the end of what's coming in the next book...who even cares about those characters? And when Ken was in the rehabilitation centre, why were friends not allowed to visit, and Terri given ten minutes before being thrown out? Surely doctors would want Ken to feel encouraged and supported! So silly, from start to finish.
Not much fatal about it really, Ken is giving Terri a lift home after a party one night when he has an accident and becomes blind!?!? His girlfriend, the ever sensitive Amy Sutton promptly dumps him and starts going out with the replacement quarterback Scott Trost instead. Terri spends her time helping Ken rehabilitate, and they start falling for one another
I genuinely enjoyed this one! Terri is really cool and isn’t your typical sweet valley flirt or geek, she has her own personality and interest. Ken ends up blinded after a terrible incident, and as he comes to term with this, his feelings for Terri become muddled. It actually had some genuinely insightful (no pun intended) moments, and described how Ken may have felt, and what he was going through physically. The writing seemed better in this than in some of the more recent ones, and it was actually fairly balanced with people like Amy being a twat, while people like Winston just getting on with things. Obviously it was hugely dramatic as per, but that’s what makes SVH so hilariously trashy and brilliant!
A nice sideline book. It shows how all the sweet valley characters in the wske of a tragedy. When Ken loved his sight in an accident, Amy, his "girlfriend" loses her pretty head and runs in the opposite direction. So do some of his supposedly close friends like Bruce. It's really intetesting to see how each character reacts. Some support, some ignore and don't know what to do. Then comes Terri who's had a crush on him for a while. The rest of the story focuses on Ken's and Terri's relation as it develops.

Ken Matthews is blinded! I remember being sincerely shocked by this plot twist. Even though shallow Amy Sutton dumps him, Ken finds love with a non-shallow girl by the end of the book. Phew. You deserve it Ken.
I loved that these books never made my pre-teen years seem unimportant. I loved the drama, the crazy, the normal problems and the drama, did I mention the drama?
