Heath Lambert (PhD, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is the Executive Director of the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors and is the Associate Pastor at First Baptist Church Jacksonville, FL. He is also a visiting faculty member at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Lambert is the co-editor of Counseling the Hard Cases: True Stories Illustrating the Sufficiency of God's Resources in Scripture (B&H, 2012), and author of The Biblical Counseling Movement After Adams (Crossway, 2011), Finally Free: Fighting for Purity with the Power of Grace (Zondervan, 2013), and co-author of Transforming Homosexuality: What the Bible Says about Sexual Orientation and Change (P&R, 2015).
Pastoral ministry is filled with unique challenges. One challenge that is growing exponentially, is the sin of pornography. Pastors must deal with this issue directly - with grace and biblical authority.
I tend to pass on most books that address the topic of pornography these days. The reason: Many Christian books miss the target all-together. They either focus on addiction, make excuses for men trapped in the sin of pornography, minimize the sin, or offer graphically explicit "help" that does more harm than good. Frankly, most books that deal with this topic are drowning in psychological nonsense that ignores the plain teaching of Scripture. So I pass on most of these books.
However, Heath Lambert's book, Finally Free is different. Here's are several themes I see emerging from the pages of Lambert's book:
An supreme allegiance to Scripture. A passion for holiness. A clinging the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. An intense hatred of sin. A longing to help men trapped by the sin of pornography. A long list of biblical strategies for defeating sin. A commitment to exploring themes of sanctification which are grounded in God's forgiving grace and his transforming grace. The main point of the book serves as the foundation for this excellent piece of writing:
To alert readers to the grace of God which forgives and transforms. Grace that forgives is greatly needed and will of course, bring a great deal of encouragement to men who struggle with sexual sin.
But forgiving grace does not go far enough. Struggling sinners also needs grace that transforms. This kind of grace brings healing. This kind of grace bring hope, and health, and life change. This kind of grace destroys the pull and power of the sin of pornography.
Lambert does a terrific job of blending gospel-centered hope, admonition, and rebuke. Men who struggle in this area should turn to this resource as a source of deep encouragement which will lead to victory over sin. Frankly, Heath Lambert's work is the best contemporary help available in dealing with this kind of sin. The book would be suitable for one-on-one discipleship and would also serve readers well in a small group setting.
A good overview on the issues related to sexual sin. Heath Lambert explains the issue and its resolution in clear language. This book is useful for anyone struggling with sexual sin or seeking to counsel those that are struggling.
Quite simply, this is the best book on freedom from addiction to pornography that I have read (and I have read my fair share of books of this type over the years). The depth and thoroughness to which Heath Lambert goes to strike at the root causes of pornography addiction, and how God equips each of us to fight this addiction, was so refreshing and Christ-centered that I found myself driven to a deeper love for God and His Word through what I was reading from Lambert. If you have read any other books on porn addiction, then it is pretty commonplace for authors to be very thorough, to the point of vulgarity and a transgressing of Ephesians 5:3-4, in their descriptions of just what kind of pornography guys they have counseled are struggling with, how many times a day they look at it, and even what sites they visit to see the porn. However, Lambert wisely chooses to provide only minor details into the kind of pornography addictions that the real-life examples in his book struggle with, and it provides for a very refreshing read since you don't have to worry about lusting after a sexual act thanks to an authors desire to draw more attention to the sin committed rather than the Savior who can deliver from that sin.
Furthermore, I loved how Lambert started the book off discussing not only God's Forgiving Grace (Colossians 2:13-14) in the life of a believer, but also His Transforming Grace(Romans 6:4). I have a propensity as a believer to put too much focus on the Forgiving Grace of God, and to completely lose site of the Transforming Grace of God. Like Lambert says on page 21: "It's not enough that our record of debt is paid; we also need grace to live like Jesus; we need grace that changes us so we can be like him in his holiness and love". I wish I could imprint that truth into my heart and mind forever, so that whenever I give into the temptations to gratify the desires of my flesh and to feel the wicked weight of my own sinfulness, that I would humbly remember that God not only grants Forgiving Grace to his children but also Transforming Grace that declares "I believe the truths contained in God's Word and will faithfully live those out to the glory of my God!" Lambert does a great job of illustrating this on Page 23:
"Many people spend a lot of time pursuing forgiveness. They beg and plead for forgiveness after indulging in pornography, but they don't know what to do next. The Bible teaches that in addition to confessing sin and seeking God's forgiveness, you need to pursue God's powerful transforming grace by believing the good news and walking in faith and obedience to the Gospel. God's grace pardons you and forgives your sin, and God's grace empowers you to live differently and be obedient to him."
That was a great way to start this book, and really laid the groundwork for what Lambert said throughout the rest of his book. For me, Chapter 3: Using Accountability to Fight Pornography and Chapter 9: Using a Dynamic Relationship with Jesus to Fight Pornography were my favorite chapters in the book. In Chapter 3, Lambert does an outstanding job of describing the pros and cons of Accountability Groups and how to make them more Gospel-centered and effective based on what should, and should not, be talked about. I loved his exhortation that if everyone in your Accountability Group is struggling with the same sin, then you are not living out Galatians 6 which says that one who is spiritual needs to restore the one, or ones, who are struggling in sin...how can one who is spiritual restore anyone from their sin(s) if everyone is struggling with the same sin?!?! That was a great point by Lambert and one that is often overlooked. Also, Chapter 9 was a great tool for those struggling with treating God like He was a genie in a bottle whose only mission in life is to grant our wishes whenever we make them. Lambert thoroughly expounded on John 6, and showed how people today are still treating God the same way that those of the 5,000+ who had their stomachs filled with fish and bread. They wanted a miracle/sign to be granted when they wanted it, and Jesus refused to be their "genie in a bottle". Instead, he exhorted them multiple times to focus not on the bread that perishes, but on the imperishable bread (which is Himself). I can't tell you how many times I have personally expressed my frustration to God for not moving on my behalf when I demanded/wanted Him to move, and totally neglected all of the other "tools" in my arsenal to fight my sin and to gain victory over it.
Again, I don't think my words above could do this book justice. Get yourself a copy, and read it through, ponder over it, and then read it again to make sure that the truths contained in it set up shop in your heart. Even if you aren't currently struggling with pornography addiction, but have some other sin set up as a stronghold in your life, get this book and it will equip you to be Christ-centered and Gospel-focused in your battle to be free of sin and fully submitted to Christ!
I received this for free from Zondervan Publishers via Cross Focused Reviews for this review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Great resource for men in their call to live in purity. Very helpful. Lambert is both practical and theological. Both are necessary in the fight for purity.
Finally Free is one of those books you buy a dozen of and keep on hand. Pornography is an epidemic. It’s a huge industry, widely and easily accessibly, and the percentage of people who view it is high. Many of these viewers start at a young age. Heath shares his own story. He viewed it for the first time at eight years old. I also was introduced to pornography at eight years old. It’s not uncommon. A lot of people who are introduced early fight it late into life. Finally Free provides hope and points us to the remedy for pornography--Jesus Christ. “It’s your union with Jesus--his life in you--that is your hope” (10).
Central to understand how Jesus defeats our lustful hearts is understanding our union with him. Heath writes, “In this book, I want to share the amazing depth and effect of Christ’s power to eradicate pornography from your life. . . . Jesus loves to cleanse those who love to look at pornography, and he loves to give them power to change. Our sinfulness does not get the final word. Instead, Jesus justifies, washes, and sanctified us” (12-13). He weaves that emphasis throughout the book. Even when recommending action to take, he reminds us preventative measures without Jesus Christ are powerless. Pornography is a heart matter. “Outward measures, regardless of how radical they are, can never change your heart” (72).
That highlights the real strength of the book. Heath doesn’t shy away from calling us to unswerving allegiance to Jesus. But these imperatives are always rooted in the person and work of Jesus Christ. And the victories we are assured are always found in our union with Christ. Again, “Christian, hear the Word of God: the impurity of pornography stands in direct opposition to who are in Christ” (154).That’s truth we all need, but it’s crucial for those who are fighting pornography. He reminds us, “your relationship with Jesus is bigger than your struggle with porn” (142).
I want to close with part of the two final paragraphs of the conclusion. Soak them in and find rest in Jesus Christ.
If you’re trusting in Jesus, pornography will never have the final say in your life. Forty-five zillion years from now, pornography will be nowhere in your mind as you perpetually behold the beauty of the spotless Lamb who was slain for your sin and mine There is a day coming--and it is not far away--when you will see Jesus himself. When you will see him, he will change you into his perfect likeness.
The message of this book is that you do not have to wait until then to be free from pornography. (159)
Such an encouraging and Christ-focused book. My only quip is the focus throughout the book is on men’s struggle with porn, but we can’t assume it’s only a man’s problem. This book would helpful for woman who struggle with porn, but it might be hard to relate to some examples, stories, etc. Some widening might have made it medicine more readily used by men and women.
My great friend Kyle Beckrich's review couldn't be more true... "This book is a must read for anyone who wants to seriously fight their sin as well as for those who are mentoring/discipling others. This book from start to finish was Christ-centered and grace-filled, yet did not shy away from the serious consequences of sin."
Heath walks the reader through the seriousness of sin, its consequences, and how we can put our sin to death by God's transforming grace. And like Kyle said if you want to seriously wage war against your sin, YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!
"I am not what I will be. But by God's grace, I am not what I was."
While I read this for a seminary class, it's by no means an academic book. Immensely practical and urgently needed, this is probably the best book I've read on overcoming addiction to pornography--a huge problem that I encounter all the time in discipleship and counseling with church members. While many books seem to approach the subject with a mindset of inducing guilt in order to produce change, Lambert assumes (correctly, in my experience) that most Christians addicted to pornography are already under a massive pile of guilt. They already know it's wrong. They usually sincerely want to change. They just can't seem to do it.
Lambert approaches the subject from the opposite direction, focusing on God's grace as the only way out of addiction. In addition to some "radical measures" for those whose addiction is particularly strong and destructive, he lays out a number of tools through which God's grace equips us with everything we need to fight for and attain purity. This is one I'll be handing out frequently in the future, no doubt.
This book is a must read for anyone who wants to seriously fight their sin as well as for those who are mentoring/discipling others. This book from start to finish was Christ-centered and grace-filled, yet did not shy away from the serious consequences of sin.
The most helpful book I’ve read on the subject! Lambert’s connecting arrogance to sexual immorality is a game changer: “Every bad thing you do flows from an arrogant heart that is selfishly ambitious.” My book is full of highlights. Highly recommend!
What an incredible book! Let's start right off with the fact that this is like no other book on pornography I have ever read. Instead of being about statistics, guilt and strategies to keep pornography away from yourself, it is a book about what is more excellent. I am reminded of a famous sermon by Puritan Thomas Chalmers, The Expulsive Power of a New Affection, which says it does no good to remove idols and sinful acts from our lives if we do not replace them with something greater. And this is what Heath Lambert does here. He begins the book with the introduction and first chapter setting out what matters most, God's grace. And only this will save a person out of pornography. Lambert does it like an experienced theologian. His explanation of what it means to have God's grace given to you not because of what you have done but because of what Christ has done for us, is some of the best writing I have read over the past year on this topic. Short, succinct and powerful! This combined with the final chapter and conclusion make up the true heart of this book. Whether you are struggling with pornography right now or not these sections are incredible and should be read by all. Chapters 2-8 deal with strategies based on God's grace for dealing with pornography. Chapter 4 is the most powerful chapter of these in that it lays out why we must cut ourselves off from pornography before we can truly understand God's grace for us.
Overall I would highly recommend this book for everyone. Especially those addicted to pornography and for those who may not be addicted but are struggling with lust that has not manifested itself yet as true addiction.
Heath Lambert has written a highly practical and gospel-centered book which is sure to help anyone willing to apply the principles it teaches. Written specifically to help those ensnared in pornography, Finally Free offers eight straightforward strategies for freedom, all of which are rooted in a Biblical perspective on human sin and our dependence on God's grace for victory over it. Lambert offers insightful advice on familiar strategies (e.g. confession and accountability) and suggests other helpful avenues less commonly associated with battling porn addiction (e.g. cultivating an attitude of humility).
This book is Christ saturated. I’ve read a few books on the subject but this one delivers the best advice for real victory and change - Christ. Although Lambert does offer practical measures to take in overcoming lust, he makes clear that these things are just watering and planting and clearing the way, but it’s Christ alone who gives the growth (victory). He truly believes the gospel is powerful and has dealt a deadly blow to sin’s dominion over the Christian and he presents that biblical truth in such a way which, Lord willing, will convince every reader of this book that Jesus is better, Jesus is powerful and Jesus is exceedingly delightful!
I used to work at a liquor store. At this store, we only sold spirits, no non-alcoholic drinks whatsoever. It always tickled me when an old lady would come in, buy some rum, and explain to me that it was just for a recipe. Perhaps she thought I judged every customer that came into the store. Of course that would mean I judged every single customer I ever served. In other words, there was no need to explain that she was not drinking the rum.
When you read a book about getting free from porn addiction, you set yourself up for judgment. Though I do not have an issue with pornography, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There is a lot of wisdom for everyone here. And, especially if you are addicted to porn, I would recommend this book. Gems like “you look at porn because you are arrogant…” Of course you do. Pride and arrogance are the root of all my sin. Just because you are bullied by an addiction does not mean your sin is some kind of victimization.
It’s a short read and one of the few print books I finished in one day. Highly recommended.
This is probably the best book on sexual sin that I’ve read. Lambert’s book is entirely gospel-centered and focuses on the transforming grace of Christ from start to finish. For me, the last chapter and conclusion were the most impactful.
Excellent resource! Any self-help book that uses a discipleship is worth a read. Even for those not facing this particular temptation, the principles here apply widely. For those who dealing with this book’s specific aim, wow, this is very practical and balanced. I was hoping for a solid, succinct resource to have on hand, and this knocks it out of the park.
This is THE BOOK for every guy who has struggled with lust and felt like it’s an insurmountable obstacle. Lambert writes with incredible clarity that identifies eight areas to fight pornography with. The stories he shares are relatable and at times it felt like I was reading my own thoughts, word-for-word. His ideas are straight from Scripture and he does an amazing job linking the Biblical text to straightforward, practical applications. Easily the best book I have read that deals with this subject, and I urge others to read it too. 10/10
A short, but good book on an important topic. If you struggle, or you are counseling someone who struggles, this book will be helpful. Action items are included at the end of each chapter. A great book to use for people disciping others one on one.
Fantastic! This is the best book on purity I have read. I highly recommend for anyone who might struggle in this area or desires to draw closer to God.
Finally Free was one of the first books I picked up. In an urgent need to defeat the struggle of pornography, this book opened up my eyes to how deadly it is. It is a book I hope to circle back to and advise others to read. Praise God for redeeming us.
Recently someone came to my office, seeking counsel. This person had been struggling with pornography since they were 14 years old. This person was burdened with guilt. They needed help. I wanted to help.
I remembered I had ran across Finally Free: Fighting for Purity with the Power of Grace, a book on how to be set free from pornography. I went ahead and purchased it, seeking answers on how to help others with what has been described as The New Narcotic. Below is a review:
An Overview
In the words of the author, “This book is about something much better than pornography. This book is about the amazing power of Jesus Christ to free you from pornography” (p. 12). Finally Free is gospel-centered, persuading the reader to focus on the forgiving and transforming grace that come from the gospel of Jesus Christ. The author, Heath Lambert, has intentionally omitted those graphic and crude images and language that are often associated with pornography. “It is sad that many employ impure, filthy, and crude language in resources designed to help people fight sexual immorality. We cannot attain purity and morality by using language that is impure and immoral” (p. 14).
There are a number of case studies throughout, individuals and couples that the author has worked with (with protected identity, as we would expect). The thesis of the book is substantiated with careful exegesis of Scripture.
A Critique
While I have nothing but praise for this book, I wish the appendix, “Help for Families and Friends of Men Struggling with Pornography,” would have been one of the chapters. Why? when readers see appendix, they think “optional,” no need to read right now or at all. Having read the appendix, I believe that it is not optional and is too relevant to be relegated “appendix.” Next, Mr. Lambert targets men in this book. I wish he had widened his scope. Yes, as a society we tend to associate pornography with men, but there is growing evidence to demonstrate that pornography is becoming a problem among women as well.
Conclusion and Commendation
Recently at a training event, a lady mentioned how she had divorced her husband after thirty years of marriage. As someone in the business of saving marriages, I was curious. During a break, I went up to the lady and asked what had happened. Her husband had been hooked on pornography. They tried counseling. It didn’t work. And to make matters worse, the husband got involved with other women, even after promising to change. I told her about the book Finally Free.
Finally Free is needed. It is well-written. It is straight up. There is a call to repentance. Tough decisions have to be made. It is grace-saturated. Pornography doesn’t have to have the finally say. People have and can be set free.
Let me begin my review by saying this has just become my 'Go To' book in helping anyone deal with sexual sins like pornography. However, don't let the word 'pornography' scare you off. These strategies Lambert lays out would be great in the fight for faith against so many other sins: jealousy, envy, greed, discontentment, anxiety, fear, worry, covetousness, gluttony and any number of other sins. How can I claim a book that clear has as it's subtitle 'Fighting For Purity With the Power of Grace' be for anything other than sexual sin? Because of the emphasis upon Jesus' grace and it's power to transform. Heath Lambert writes with power because he writes about grace. He offers tremendous hope to sinners like me & you because he writes about the grace of God in Christ Jesus. He doesn't offer a program. This isn't some 40-days to purity methodology that's doomed to fail on day 45! This is the life-changing, life-shaping, life-long-fulfilling grace of God in Jesus. I took notes as I read this book; eight typed pages of notes, in fact. I wanted to include them as part of this review, but I normally try to stick to about 250-300 words. So instead, I'll list the eight strategies first and if I have space, I'll make a few more comments: Using Sorrow to Fight Pornography Using Accountability to Fight Pornography Using Radical Measures to Fight Pornography Using Confession to Fight Pornography Using Your Spouse (or Your Singleness) to Fight Pornography Using Humility to Fight Pornography Using Gratitude to Fight Pornography Using a Dynamic Relationship with Jesus to Fight Pornography
In all of this, Lambert is quick to start out emphasizing over and over: Grace is the foundation in this fight. Without it, you won't change; not truly. Without it, you have no hope, and if there's anything you need in this kind of fight, it's hope that it can happen. But with grace, with Jesus, well, all things are possible and you can do all things in and through Jesus Christ. I know several people I need to whom I need to commend this book. And there are probably many others I'm not aware of who need to read this book. Perhaps my church, or your church, need to invest in multiple copies of this book and give it to the men, whether they struggle against pornography or not. I wonder if God just might use it to transform His church into the pure, spotless, unwrinkled bride she is meant to be.
This was very good. Although written primarily to address pornography, everything Lambert says applies equally to all manifestations of lust. As such, this is a great book for all men to read. There were several things I particularly appreciated: - His focus is not on modifying behaviour, but on real, lasting, Christ-centred, grace-fuelled heart change, from which all else flows. - He pinpoints the root of all sin (and especially sexual sin) as greed and selfish, arrogant pride (these chapters were particularly good). In opposition to these tendencies, we should cultivate humility and gratitude. - The sections giving practical counsel (on accountability, confession, avoiding occasions where we will be tempted, and so on) are consistently wise, sensible and helpful. - He writes all this without being vulgar or crude in any way.
Great book, and a helpful reminder of the importance of guarding our hearts, fighting for purity and putting sin to death daily. I highly recommend this book to every Christian man.
Overall not a terrible book. Hit a lot of the major topics. It just was very surface level & not deep at all personally. Very elementary writing and I didn’t agree with all the points.
Especially the part: if you’re focused on a career and doing well in school maybe you should realign your priorities and get married. Uh, what!?
I just felt like the reading was way wordier than it needed to be and dry. Also, geared 95% towards men which sucks that you miss the whole women demographic.
Just not my favorite. There are far better resources out there. The good reviews on here make you think “THIS IS IT”.... and it just wasn’t it.
I highly recommend this book to everyone in the Church. If you struggle with pornography, read this book right now. If you have a spouse or significant other than struggles with pornography, read this book right now. If you are a pastor or ministry leader in your church, then read this book right now.
Heath Lambert is grace-filled, giving those who struggle with pornography true hope to overcome their addiction through the gospel of Jesus Christ. I will use this book for years to come as I counsel anyone who struggles with pornography.
This might go on my “read annually” list. His treatment of this specific issue is broadly applicable: “Whatever you perceive the degree of your struggle to be—whether minor or major—your sin is enough for a just and vengeful God to send you to hell forever. As true as that statement is, whether your struggle is major or minor, your sin is not nearly as strong as the grace is Jesus to transform you.” (p. 159)
