Kate Lipton loves animals, especially unusual ones. So when she sees a pop-up ad on her computer for an amazing lizard from Australia, she has to have it. The ad says the lizard is actually a kind of chameleon--it can change its color to blend in with its surroundings. But what makes this lizard really strange is that it's a copycat--the ad says it can even change its shape.
Kate's parents don't believe all the claims in the ad, but they tell her to go ahead and order it. They tell her not to be disappointed if it's just a plain old lizard. After anxiously checking the mail every day for two weeks, the package finally arrives. But when she finally opens it--there's no lizard inside. There's only an egg with a written warning. Is Katie ready for what's about to hatch?
Robert Lawrence Stine known as R. L. Stine and Jovial Bob Stine, is an American novelist and writer, well known for targeting younger audiences. Stine, who is often called the Stephen King of children's literature, is the author of dozens of popular horror fiction novellas, including the books in the Goosebumps, Rotten School, Mostly Ghostly, The Nightmare Room and Fear Street series.
R. L. Stine began his writing career when he was nine years old, and today he has achieved the position of the bestselling children's author in history. In the early 1990s, Stine was catapulted to fame when he wrote the unprecedented, bestselling Goosebumps® series, which sold more than 250 million copies and became a worldwide multimedia phenomenon. His other major series, Fear Street, has over 80 million copies sold.
Stine has received numerous awards of recognition, including several Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards and Disney Adventures Kids' Choice Awards, and he has been selected by kids as one of their favorite authors in the NEA's Read Across America program. He lives in New York, NY.
The Most Wanted sub-series of the spectacularly popular Goosebumps franchise ends with R.L. Stine's second play on the title of L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz (the first, The Wizard of Ooze, was released as book seventeen of the Horrorland series in 2010), and briefly takes us to the Land Down Under to collect a monster that isn't at all what it seems. Twelve-year-old Kate Lipton's parents are more impulsive than most. Their naive career ideas have foundered in the past (the miniature-horse petting farm earned no substantial revenue), but as always they're optimistic about their newest plan: putting together a public exhibit of rare lizards from around the world. On vacation in Australia they find a scientist willing to secretly sell them a Tasmanian cobra lizard, still unhatched in its egg. The lizard is so rare that it's practically nonexistent; if they can get the egg back home and babysit it until the lizard hatches alive and well, it will be a can't-miss starter exhibit.
Guarding the egg turns out to be stressful. Adele, a girl from Kate's school, almost breaks the egg when she visits to see it for herself. When the infant reptile does exit its shell, the creature is fast, difficult to catch if it escapes the cage. Tas, as they name it, is a biter; it snaps its teeth on Kate's finger the first time she picks it up, drawing blood. Kate doesn't think the wound is a big deal until her hand breaks out in a scaly rash...which spreads to her arms, shoulders, and eventually beyond. She's afraid to bring the rash to her parents' attention; what if something is seriously wrong that can't be fixed? The extent of the horror gradually dawns on her as the ugly, scaly skin spreads over most of her body: Tas's bite is turning her into a lizard. She's even acting like a lizard in weird ways that don't bode well for her future as a human. Kate needs to find a cure, but is it already too late?
This book is an interesting concept, similar to How I Met My Monster from earlier in the series. I'm not sure the pieces of the puzzle fit together convincingly, but it's a fun read, paced faster than the previous Most Wanted book, Here Comes the Shaggedy. Excluding special editions, I believe the Most Wanted series (ten books) peaks with book seven, A Nightmare on Clown Street, an eerie and surprising story that strongly hints at the unseen presence of Slappy the ventriloquist dummy. That peak continues most of the way through book eight, Night of the Puppet People. Perhaps it's a taste of horrors to come in the next Goosebumps series, SlappyWorld? The Lizard of Oz isn't R.L. Stine's best, but it's of uniform quality with the majority of the Most Wanted series, and I'd consider giving it one and a half stars. Enjoy, fellow Goosebumps lovers.
One of the weakest GB books in the franchise. Horrible father character, and bland characters all around. There is something earlier in the book that goes nowhere involving a woman working for a scientist foreshadowing completely nothing. The twist sucked but was kinda funny? Ending was actually decently creepy. L final sentence. The “Oz” crap is completely unrelated to the book besides one joke that isn’t even brought up more than twice. They should’ve named the Lizard Oz and called the book “Oz of Oz” or some crap. The entire book feels like a waste of time. Did I mention it’s boring and basic af? At least there were good moments thrown in there and a decent start to the book. 4/10
Honey I think I turned the kids into lizards?! Cool story, especially since I'm Australian but I guess it would have been even cooler if most of the book was actually set in Oz!
SOMEONE STOP ME FROM BUYING THIS BOOKS. GODS, WHAT A SHITTY ENDING. I mean- this book started good, and the premise sounds interesting, but NO, IT HAD A SHITTY ENDING AND PLOT TWIST. Let’s see. I didn’t give this 1 star because I liked it more than other R. L. Stine books I read this year. It hadn’t a lot of filling and unnecessary scenes like ”It’s alive! It’s alive!”, ”I am Slappy’s evil twin”, ”Attack of the Jack”, or a lot of other books I didn’t like or hated. Anyway, here comes my full hate review (with spoilers) where I save you from reading this shit :)
The book starts with Kate, the protagonist, telling us that her parents are crazy and always have stupid ideas like quite their jobs and make a miniature horses farm, and after that failed (who knows why) they’re in Australia trying to steal lizards and traffic them to the United States, ‘cause they thought that having a dark web museum where they have illegal animals would be fantastic :D. The mom literally SCREAMED they’re gonna traffic lizards, and it’s when a random guy appeared from nowhere in a mysterious cloud like he’s gonna sell them strange drugs, but he only tells them about a weird island where he and his accomplice tried to make animals like humans but things went bad and the animals kill them. And they follow him. (Okay, no, I’m just making references of “The island of Dr. Moreau.” Actually, the man tells them he had an illegal lizard for them). They arrive to his office, laboratory or something I can’t remember, and it’s when they look at the giant lizard he had, speak about it, the man gave them an egg, a random woman that worked there tells Kate dOn’T tAkE iT and then disappeared. They obviously take it🙄✋✨ Somehow, they leak it through the airport and plain and nobody cares if they have an illegal animal or bomb material :).
Random stuff that we don’t care happens, like the cliche war that all girls in this books have with another girl (STOP MAKING GIRLS HATE EACH OTHER FOR ENVY), the mom going see her sister (and it’s the last time we see her in this book), and Kate inviting the girl that “hated” her for no reason to her house just to prove that she had a illegal lizard in her house. She’s enough of an idiot to take Adele (that other girl) to the room where they hat the egg, and then it’s more stupid when she let it fall to the floor. We have stupid scenes where the childish dad tells them it was a joke, and then shows the real egg to the random girl but he’s a idiot too and let the real egg fall down ._. The girl apologizes and leaves with a grin. Then Kate cleans the cracked eggs and OMG PLOT TWIST. The weird lizard WAS ALIVE. It bite her, but the dad doesn’t give a fuck about it, ‘cause he FINALLY has he’s illegal lizard, so they go to celebrate in KFC or something like that. Random days that we don’t care too happens, and the girl is convinced that she’s turning into a lizard after the Australian reptile bite her. She tells her dad, but one again, he don’t give a fuck, ‘cause now that journalists had interviewed him for the illegal lizard he had for rich criminals to see it, he thinks he’s a rich and powerful man, so he has no fucking time to stupid problems like her daughter would be dying, c’mon, who cares about that???✋🙄✨ Anyway, he told her that he’s going to Toronto ‘cause someone had a lizard for him (and it’s kinda stupid. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think there are lizards in Canada…), so he’s like: Text me if you’re dying, my assistant will probably reply you in the year 2025 ;) So he leaves and the girl bite her brother ‘cause she’s more lizard than human, and her brother just run away to his room instead of trying to revenge🚶♀️ The girl tells her babysitter that she needs a doctor, but she doesn’t care ‘cause she left a bag in the grocery store, so leaves the invisible reptilian girl to die. So she accepts she’s gonna die and the only thing that come to her mind is look for old photos of her like a baby ‘cause Adele (the girl she hate for no reason) told the class that they should make an Instagram album of random photos of them like baby’s and now. Like gurl- nobody cares about that. Anyway, Kates look for that and when she finally finds one, she only sees eggs photos OMG WAS SHE A…? And then her brother interrupts and they both forgot about the bite and look the photos questioning if they were reptilians and it’s when a giant lizard enters. OMG IT’S THE LIZARS SHE SAW BEFORE WHEN SHE TOLD HER DAD SHE WAS GOING TO DIE. They fight it for 30 seconds and then WE HAVE AN INCREDIBLE PLOT TWIST. *Drumroll* THE DAD WAS A LIZARD MAN. OMG. It transforms itself into a human again, and the kids are like wtf when the dad tells them they are reptilians, the pure race that might conquest the word again like they did in Old Times. And it ends. Well no, we have other 5 pages where they invite Adele to dinner her ‘cause she had a video of the reptilian girl crawling like an animal on the gym floor, but she only delete the video and they let her go, even if she could call the FBI… And it ends like this shit.
R. L. Stine literally thought “Werewolf and other creatures are boring. Let’s do a reptilian family who only wants to exist” while writing this book.
Don’t read this shit; I only gave it 2 stars ‘cause it avoid me the reading slump that “The Shining” was giving me.
Not an incredible story mostly repeats itself. For example, the main character always throughout the book says that her parents are dumb and that they never listen to her. It's true the whole book is her trying to get people to bring her the doctor, but no one listens because she does a lot of dumb stuff like eating raw chicken. Boring book would not read again.
This is, as far as I could tell, the most recent Goosebumps story not counting the SlappyWorld series. It's hard for me to get over the inclusion of new technologies like smart phones and YouTube. Outside of that this feels just like classic Stine, for better and for worse.
Most of these newer GB books just aren't very good. I was enjoying this one a little up until the big twist / reveal towards the end. Just features too many overrused tropes and familiar plot devices. This one is pretty out there, and I did find it mildly entertaining, but again, it's pretty cheesy and predictable.
I haven't read one of these since maybe 4th grade, but this one just caught my eye. It was a fun and nostalgic read, although it was nice to see Stine has kept up with technology etc. by including use of social media.
This book was amazing I loved it when Kate's dad told her she was from a lizard family and when they both planned to scare Adel it was one of my favourite books.
Truly hilarious. Bravo, Mr.Stine! Reading this in my 30's, this book brought back memories of the awkwardness of puberty, and I think this (like many of his books) can be read as an analogy of that terribly awkward stage of life.
I really didn't know how to rate this because the beginning was intriguing the middle felt the same as my harriest adventure ,cry of the catand chicken chicken. The ending was surprising but it was basically the girl who cried monster overall id say its still a good but but used alot of recycled material
I can't believe I'm disappointed in a Goosebumps book! Lizard of Oz featured a main character that was bratty and a family that did "funny" pranks that weren't funny at all. I did like the twist at the end which sort of redeemed the story in a way but overall I wasn't spooked or scared at all.
TLDR; I don’t believe Kate’s parents quit their jobs, they had to have been fired because they are so clueless about basic common sense. This book would have been a lot better if the parents weren’t so oblivious. Kate’s journey was basic, but it did get pretty dark for a Goosebumps book near the end. It was okay, not terrible, but it’s been done before by Stine.
What Came First, the Lizard or the Egg? Kate (12) and Freddy (10) Lipton have the most clueless parents in all of Goosebumps history. They all live in “a creepy old house [that] reminded [their parents] of a haunted house they saw in a scary movie they went to on their first date.” This could have had romantic Addam’s Family vibes, but it didn’t. Their parents quit their jobs—Mom, teacher; Dad, accountant—to breed and sell miniature horses. They buy twelve miniature horses. This doesn’t work, so they open a petting zoo. This also doesn’t work, so they go to a wildlife preserve in Queensland, Australia to buy lizards. Dr. Clegg—a former wildlife preserve employee—approaches the family and offers to sell them a rare lizard egg. The egg is a Tasmanian Cobra lizard. Miss Morris, Dr. Clegg’s assistant, pulls Kate aside and warns her to not take the egg. (Why is she warning a twelve-year-old child and not the parents?) Obviously, Kate can do nothing so her parents complete the sale and go home, excited for the future. “[They] didn’t know that [the egg] was about to bring nothing but screaming horror into [their] lives.” Kate goes to school and tells her class about her trip. Adele Bender pretends to be Kate’s friend just to one-up her in everything. Adele doubts Kate, saying the egg is from the grocery store, so Kate invites her over. Of course, the egg breaks and Adele goes home, albeit somewhat remorseful. Kate’s dad is devastated and also leaves. Kate goes to clean up the egg and realises that the lizard has hatched! It bites her and things start changing for Kate. Soon her skin starts changing, “[her] hands had crisscross lines on them. Like cracks in the skin. Only in a pattern. The lines formed diamond shapes on the backs of both hands.” This spreads up her arms and her nails change too. Is it really dry skin like her dad says it is?
This story was okay. The plot twist at the end was a classic Goosebumps, à la The Girl Who Cried Monster (1993). The parents were pretty unbearable. Kate even thinks: “I always hate to bring them back to earth by asking practical questions.” Like will lizards from Australia survive the climate in Middle Village, Pennsylvania? Where will they put them? There are so many times where the parents had zero common sense.
Adele was a basic rival. She had an attitude and a clear motive. She wasn’t special or anything, but she did her roll well. The ending was satisfying and kind of funny. There were some questions though about how instantaneous it was. Overall, the book was fine. Not the worst, but it wasn’t great by any means.
2.5/5 rounded to 3/5 because of the darkness near the end with Kate's emotions.
This is Day #21 of my October Goosebumps Challenge. Day: 21/31 Books: 21/31
Goosebumps Most Wanted, the Lizard of Oz, written by R.L Stine, is the story of a girl named Kate whose parents decide to open up a rare reptile exhibit for the public to see. Her parents are very into reptiles, but Kate does not share their interest. The family goes to Australia to see reptiles and a strange man introduces them to a very rare type of lizard that ends up biting Kate. Then Kate starts to turn into a lizard. But she learns later that the bite didn’t do it. Kate and her family are a rare form of lizard that can turn back and forth from human to lizard. The book is fun to read. I liked the way the book sets you up to think that this rare form of lizard can turn people into other lizards. However, the ending isn’t as good as the rest of the book. There is a know it all girl at school that records Kate acting like a lizard and threatens to show people if she doesn’t do what she wants her to do. Kate tells her dad at the end and it seemed like they were going to come up with an interesting plan to make her not show anyone, but the plan wasn’t that exciting. Still, if you like Goosebump books, you will like this one also.
This book is Goosebumps Most Wanted by R.L. Stine about the story of Kate Lipton. And there parents are obsessed over lizards and the love lizards after the first few pages they are already going to Australia to get lizards.they live in the USA. The lizard they get is a rare species of lizard called the Tasmanian cobra lizard. And now about to the half of the book Kate gets bite by there lizard and now he gets scaly skin he finds his mom purse made of lizard skin .and they are the same he was starting to turn into a lizard. But he needs to keep it hidden and he goes to school the next day with a long sleeved shirt but when he needs to go to gym he would normally have to change to gym clothes but he ends up not having to.And then his dad tells him that it runs through the family and it’s a power that he awakens.Once he passed age 13 it starts to happen. I really liked this book if your in middle school and it's not super long and if you like lizards i guess it's a good book but its fiction. So its not gonna give out real lizard facts. That's about it there's still some stuff i left out so go enjoy the book.
I love reading goosebumps in my schools library and one of my favorites was lizard of oz because of two things first the twisted ending i had only one guess why (i forgot the name of the mane character)he was becoming and seeing a giant lizard,it was that he that he was bitten by Tasmanian cobra lizard/Lizard of oz ,but then it turned out it was supposed to happen in his age .Second was the idea of the title because i'm very much into wizard of oz(probably because i played in school musical wizard of oz )
This was very interesting. I thought it was going to take one turn and it took a different turn all together. I love books that throw twists and turns at you. This book makes you feel like you have it figured out and then bam you are off in a different direction. But I love how this book ends and the nice way it ties up.
Fine book, even if its pretty rough in the back half. Highlights for me is the body horror sprinkled in, and i like that it takes a very… different(?) route than most goosebumps books. Overall not one id recommend but not a bad book, 4/10.
