They were as close as sisters. Two very different women, from very different backgrounds, but bound together in friendship across the yawning class divide of Edwardian England. Jane Weatherly - stableman's daughter, strong-minded and determined to fight against her double handicap of birth and sex. Her heart's convictions would sustain her through the dangers and hardships of service during the First World War, the challenges of a turbulent era, women's suffrage and social upheaval, to the discovery of an unexpected passion. Claudia Abelard - the fragile, pampered ward of a titled land owner. She is beautiful, unworldly, but haunted by her mysterious past. When Claudia gives herself, body and soul, to an utterly unsuitable man, Jane is faced with a terrible dilemma. She knows more about Royce than Claudia will ever his unscrupulous ways with women, his criminal past, the marriage he is concealing… For he is her own brother, and Jane's loyalty is torn between blood ties and friendship. Two women, fatefully connected from childhood to the men and to the destinies they cannot avoid… A rare and lasting friendship would lead them ever closer to A DISTANT DAWN.

An other heartwarming story that is hard to put down . lots of frustration with Claudia and love for Jane who became friends with a ward of a rich Lord

Many changes in estates take place with the elite due to the war. Lord Marrick:'s estate was once a nunnery and has areas they seem scary.
