Their Secrets Protect Them ... But Secrets are Hard to Keep
No one in the army can find out that Captain Jesse Christensen has become a believer. He and bookstore owner Meryn O’Reilly are forced to meet in secret, facing imprisonment or worse if they are found together. Their relationship deepens, but so does Lieutenant Gallagher’s hatred for the Christians in their city. As Gallagher’s power grows, it becomes clear that his connections go much further up the chain of command than anyone realized, putting all believers, especially Jesse, in extreme danger.
Meryn wants to give her heart to Jesse fully, but her past holds her back. Although circumstances conspire to keep her silent, she needs to tell him her secret. When he finds out what she has been keeping from him, nothing will stand between them anymore.
Or nothing will ever be the same.
The year is 2054. As the world descends into chaos around them and Christians in Canada and around the world face tighter and tighter restrictions, Jesse and Meryn wage a battle against forces of darkness--both physical and spiritual. They face the threat of being ripped apart forever as Gallagher closes in on his favorite target. Jesse’s life hangs in the balance.
Jesse, Meryn, and all believers must decide if their faith is strong enough to carry them through these dark days, or if the cost of declaring allegiance to Jesus Christ is just too high.
You will not want to miss Jesse and Meryn’s continuing story of love and faith in a time of chaos.

“Davison does a wonderful job at further developing the main characters by diving into their backstories and unpacking the things from the past that have helped shape who they are in the present. The suspense is well-placed and the timing is spot on, giving readers enough breaks to not be overwhelmed while never losing the tension.” —RT Book Reviews, 4 Stars
“The Dragon Roars, brings together all the essential elements of a good suspense read—compelling story, fast-paced action, and believable characters. The Dragon Roars is a riveting, well-written novel with an engaging storyline that draws the reader into futuristic world where it’s dangerous to be a follower of Christ. Davison is a master at weaving the faith elements of the story into a beautiful tapestry that highlights rather than detracts from the underlying message of survival in a dangerous new world of unbelief.” —LUANA EHRLICH, Author of Titus Ray Thrillers
“Sara Davison is a terrific storyteller. She takes the truths of the Bible, the what-ifs of an end-time’s scenario, and populates her story with unforgettable characters to create a world that is terrifyingly possible. The Dragon Roars is an edge-of-your-seat romantic thriller that will give your emotions a roller coaster workout.” —BARBARA ELLEN BRINK, Author of Roadkill, Double Barrel Mysteries, Book 1
“I love reading novels about strong and courageous heroines of faith and heroes who are equally matched in determination and bravery. The Dragon Roars delivers on this big time in the characters of Bible smuggler Meryn O’Reilly and Captain Jesse Christensen, as they fight for their love and faith, and to do what’s right against growing, seemingly insurmountable odds. The Dragon Roars tells a story about the unfolding Apocalypse through relatable and emotional relationships between sweethearts, parents, siblings, and friends. Sara Davison’s vision of a dystopian Canadian future has refreshingly smart and courageous characters with a lot of heart.” —MAGGIE K. BLACK, Author of over 8 novels

If The End Begins is the book where Meryn O'Reilly shines, then this book is the one where Jesse Christensen will capture your heart. This book paints such a realistic picture of a post-Christian nation that my mind was completely immersed in all of the scenarios that Christians would have to face in this world, causing me to have a better understanding of how the cost to follow Jesus is high. The author does an astounding job of living up to the title where darkness is pervasive, and there is no telling how far it can go. Yet, despite the horrendous activities taking place against Christians, there is a thread of hope and light that at times is faint, but ensures the promise of God's presence with His people, no matter what.
I truly enjoyed Jesse's perspective in this book and the immense growth that he has undergone since meeting him. As secrets unravel and danger escalates, The Darkness Deepens will keep Christian readers on the edge of their seats to see what happens next. The spiritual realities continue to hit home, showing us the clash between good and evil in a time where Christians are prohibited from owning Bibles, sharing their faith, and even having free movement. Eerie and spine-tingling do not begin to describe the horrors that Jesse and Meryn witness; however, their faith is what sustains them and keeps them going. If you're looking for an action-packed military story where Christians are being persecuted in Canada, this is a nail-biter of a book that will keep you in gripping suspense throughout the series.
Captivating. If you want a book that gets your attention and keeps it, pick this one up.
Book Two, The Dragon Roars picks up where The End Begins left off. Jesse is more than a soldier, he’s a Christian. His position is a blessing but also a curse. His relationship with the rebellious Meryn blooms, and he uses his role to help her but the dominating army is not to be trifled with. Meryn knows her future is in peril, but so is Jesse’s. How long will they be able to survive? That is the question nobody knows.
Sara Davison creates an amazing world where the world’s turned upside down. Christians are the enemy and life’s a guessing game. She weaves biblical truths with magnificent story-telling and paints a gripping picture for the reader in her Seven Trilogy Series
I give this book five-stars. I recommend this series to all who love end-time stories and series. It’s well worth it!
Another end-times nail biter in the "The Day Draws Near" series. This book picks up where the first book left off. While I think you could follow the story itself alright without reading book 1 (The End Begins), this is a series I would definitely recommend reading in order as the stories build on each other and the relationships will make more sense if you are reading the books consecutively. In this story, Jesse and Meryn are meeting in secret. She is a convicted Christian and since he is in the army, he can't be found out. When regulations are passed down that harm Meryn's best friend, Jesse does everything he can to soften the blow, but is it enough? And when secrets from their pasts are finally exposed, will they have what it takes to make it?
Like the first book, this one was a very hard read, as it speculates a not-so-distant future where the end is near and Christians face some serious persecution. As the world continues to spiral before our eyes, I can completely see these things coming to pass and that makes it a bit scary, but for that reason it's also very much worth reading. Though it's speculative, it's worth considering how we would react to similar circumstances. How would we press through persecution? Would we deny Christ or do everything we could in spite of the threat of persecution and even death to bring others to the saving knowledge of Him? I found myself questioning how I would handle the things the book's characters are experiencing and how hard the command to forgive would be. These deep questions and hard scenarios were contained within a well-written story about characters I'm coming to love, gripping suspense, some serious twists and turns that I never saw coming, and several bouts of tears. The romance was more substantial in this one than it was in book 1 because the relationship that was building in book 1 was fully budding in this one, but because of the build of book 1, it was all believable. This one ends on a bit of a relational cliffhanger, and I'm anxious to see what happens next! All in all, this was an excellent romantic suspense that has a completely plausible look at the future and made me really think about how I would handle the persecution that we are promised. Though I recommend reading the series in order, I would easily recommend this series to fans of romantic suspense and any Christian who would like to mentally take stock of their own reactions to these types of events. Special thanks to the author for an advance e-copy of this novel. I was under no obligation to provide a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.
This book was incredible! No words can truly describe how good this book was. The Darkness Deepens by Sara Davison immerses you into a time where Christians are forbidden to share their faith, own a bible, or basically have any rights. Christian are even imprisoned if found portraying their faith, if they are found being a believer, or believers found being together. This is seen through Captain Jesse Christensen and Meryn O'Reilly. If they are found together, or even found out that they are a believer, they could be imprisoned or worse. With the conditions in Canada getting worse, will they be able to survive these times? This nail biting end times novel will keep you on the edge of your seat constantly guessing, and fearing for the best.
I really enjoyed this book, but as a believer, it is difficult to wrap your mind around! I love dystopian books about the end times, and I find it allows you to think about the power declaring your faith to the world. If someone is willing to portray their faith in a world where the conditions for Christians are so brutal and beyond your comprehension, then why am I so scared to portray my faith in the world right now? I loved how this book was quite suspenseful with a lot of action, but allows you to think about the end times in a way you wouldn't have thought before. This was my second book by Sara Davison and I will definitely be reading the rest of her books!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
The second book in Sara Davison’s The Day Draws Near series, The Darkness Deepens continues the challenges of Christians who have been deemed possible terrorists following a vicious attack. As more and more regulations are added, the Christians in the country are forced to deny their faith or face the consequences if suspected of breaking even one of the unjust regulations. Meryn has already endured punishment for her actions and must take even more care to follow the rules. Jesse, the man she loves, is a new Christian and also an officer in the military that is in charge of enforcing all the regulations. As the story progresses, each of them as well as others they care for, are forced to endure unspeakable hardships.
The Darkness Deepens may be a speculative novel but those who are paying attention can see the similarities of a future that may very well be on the horizon if something does not change soon. The plot moves along at a steady pace with characters who will find their way into the reader’s heart. Scenes are sometimes sweet and other times heartrending. It is not an easy read but there is much that can be taken away from the story. I personally was torn between reading such a well-written story and my reluctance to experience reading what I feared might happen.
In a story of this type, terrible things happen but the author handles them all tactfully without the gratuitous violence that a secular book might include. If you choose to read it, I believe your faith could be strengthened. I only hope that my faith would be as strong as Jesse and Meryn’s if faced with similar circumstances.

I'm sure as I go through this review, and the next one on Friday, that things might get sketchy or even wacky. Here's the deal. I read this series in one fell swoop without really taking a break between them to gather thoughts that were necessarily book specific. I didn't have time for that as my head was spinning in all the directions at once. If you remember with 'The End Begins' on Monday I was steeped in the idea that Canada could get mean and the world might not choose to react the same way the United States does. Who knew we weren't the center of the universe? (I kid.) Before we get into another big topic I need to address something else. This book, this series, is re-released. That means some things have changed. Normally that's little things like covers, synopsis, some cleanup with editing. Every book deserves it's chance to find it's audience and sometimes you gotta do a little update. If you go to Goodreads you aren't going to find 'The Darkness Deepens'. Originally this book was titled 'The Dragon Rises'. That does have some small relevance to this book, if you are paying attention. I think the new name suits it better. I also think that I was made to be the audience for this book and this series.
OK, minutiae aside let's get to the heart. Remember what I said earlier about getting a bit all over the place and not necessarily streamlining to the book? This is that moment. Everything that is happening with Meryn and Jesse (and their band of family) starts on 10/10/2053 when ten mosques are bombed in Canada. This is important because an extremist 'Christian' group calling themselves 'The Horsemen' take responsibility. Bear in mind the quotes because, well book three is coming Friday and it's all relevant. Sidestep, sorry let's get back to my thoughts. Let this sink in for a minute. A fringe group (that no one has heard of before) that claims to be Christian takes responsibility for bombing several mosques and the government starts cracking down on Christians and declares martial law in order to control them. Seems a little over the top right? But. As a society aren't we already doing something similar to this? Aren't we as a society, as a country, as Christians, already holding all Muslims responsible for what a few extremist Muslim groups take responsibility for? Just because you follow a different path, a different faith from someone else does not make them bad or worse, evil. Just because a few of that group do evil things does not make all of them evil. How can we, as Christians, expect our society, or government to stand with us it has already been proven that it can turn on anyone based on affiliation? I feel like the sense of Christian entitlement, especially in the US and *developed* world, is misplaced at best and arrogant. Christians are already persecuted for their beliefs throughout the world. They are killed for their beliefs. They are tortured for their beliefs. Our beliefs. If we can hold all Muslims responsible for the heinous acts of a few what can we expect for our own futures with known Christian extremist groups waiting in the wings? It's only a matter of time before those tables can be turned and we are on the other side. The wrong side. Of a situation we helped to initially create. That is what I keep taking away from this series. This book.
OK, now that I went all politically heavy on ya I'm just gonna say it. Less romance would make a world of difference for me with this book. I love the addition of more of Meryn's family and the growth in Jesse. The intrigue is really ratcheting up a notch as we near the final installment. Gallagher is a world class jerkwad toadnugget. Annaliese is a case and a half. The evil that surrounds her is so well captured in this book. Meryn and Jesse are starting to annoy me a little bit. Even as I finished this book and prepared to start the final one I still felt like so much of what was happening was being told to me so the romance could take center stage. Personally, as I know others will resonate with the romance, I would love more action and suspense and intrigue and trills and less of all the rest. I feel like they both come across as weak and self-absorbed which detracts from all they are doing for the cause. Perhaps it's me? Perhaps you don't agree, or do. I'm just one woman reading one book (at a time) who is completely invested in this series. And Friday? I'll bring you all about 'The Morning Star Rises' and more of where my mind settles as I read this series.

The Darkness Deepens is the second book in Sarah Davison’s The Day Draws Near series. Set in the future, this series has a dystopian feel to it. When you think about recent events while reading this series, you can see that what the plot suggests really could be a possibility. The Darkness Deepens starts about the time The End Begins ends. The seemingly impossible romance between Jesse and Meryn continues and draws stronger in spite of the difficulty of spending time together and the dangers they face. The book ends with a surprise and cliff hanger leaving me wanting to read book three to find out how it all plays out. Davison is an excellent author and I try to never miss an opportunity to read one of her books. There is nothing in The Darkness Deepens that would keep it from being placed in a K-12 Christian school library. It is an adult novel and at times the themes are intense so I would recommend labeling the book for high school only. I received a complimentary copy of The Darkness Deepens. This is my honest review.
Thank you Sara Davison for another outstanding read.
The Dragon Roars picks up where The End Begins left off. I love the continuing story. It is full of tension, surprises, and heartrending romance. Sara Davison creatively presents a "what if" picture of the end times while ingeniously using reflections of a time in history when the Jews were targeted in Germany. Eerie and thought-provoking.
And the ending?! Well, it's amazing and I can't wait for the final book to release in the fall.
Highly recommend, but you'll want to read book one first. Comment Looking for voting buttons? Sorry, we don't let customers vote on their own reviews.
Once again, I’ve missed the first book in a series. But that’s okay, because The Darkness Deepens is so good, it makes me want to go grab the first one and then come back and talk about it. I was able to get enough context to really enjoy this book without having read the first one, though.
The story takes place in not-too-distant-future Canada, after several mosques were bombed on 10/10/2053 and an ostensibly Christian group, the Horsemen, has taken credit for the attack. Because of that, the government is dropping the hammer on Christians, marking their businesses, compelling them to wear bracelets identifying them as believers, banning Bibles, fencing them in with laws and restrictions.
Jesse Christensen is a soldier, and through his relationship with Meryn O’Reilly and her family, he’s become a believer, too. As a member of the military, he can’t let it be known that he’s fraternizing with Meryn. It would mean trouble for them both. His superior officer knows of the relationship and approves, as he’s also a Christian. They’ve both chosen to keep serving, doing good within the system when they can. But that isn’t always easy, especially with another officer really hating Christians and wanting to root them out. And keeping his relationship with Meryn under wraps isn’t easy, either.
Sara Davison is one of the best writers I’ve had the pleasure to read recently. Her books are consistently good, always enthralling, and this one meets that mark. The story is one you could see happening. It’s believable enough to give you pause and make you think – if I were in Meryn’s position, Jesse’s shoes, what would I do? Would I stand for my beliefs or would I cave? Chewy stuff.
The story kept me engaged and sometimes on the edge of my seat. But there were flashes of humor, too. Some of Jesse’s interactions with Meryn’s brothers were pretty hilarious! And Meryn and Jesse are both very sympathetic characters. They feel so strongly toward each other, but they each have fears and issues from the past that they have to work through.
Can Jesse and Meryn sort out their feelings? Can they keep clear of those who wish Christians harm? Those questions may be answered (read the book and find out), but the book ends on a cliffhanger that has me chomping at the bit to read the third book in the series!
Five stars, and I highly recommend it for fans of dystopia, clean romance, and nail-biting suspense.
Disclaimer: I received a review copy of this book from JustRead Publicity Tours. I was not required to leave a review. All opinions here are mine, and I don’t say nice things about books I don’t actually like.
The Darkness Deepens is the second book in a dystopian society novel by an amazing write like it is, a raw and real, author who I love. I’m not normally a huge fan of dystopian novels. They’re not my cup of tea. But my kids are so I knew that this new series by Sara Davison would be amazing for them to read. And I figured I could make my way through it. It might not interest me and I might not love it but at least then we’d have it for the kids.
Insert huge laughter as I fall on the floor convulsing.
I was hooked! I loved the novel! In fact, I read book one and it was for me that I wanted to read this novel. Because I needed to see what happened to my new favourite characters. Okay, so I really do have a lot of favourite characters but it’s amazing. Just know that if you’re not a dystopian fan(like me) you’re going to love this series.
Okay. So this is book two.
We venture back into the future to see what Meryn and Jesse are up to. Jesse can’t let anyone know he’s become a Christian and Meryn has to keep herself safe. But then there’s also their relationship.
So the novel takes place in 2054 I believe. So it’s not super far into the future. I think that’s part of the reason I loved it so much. It’s not millions of years away. And it makes sense. If you’re a Christian and have read End Times this novel just makes sense! Christians are being persecuted. The world is different from what we know it.
Oh, and I like that real places are still used. So it takes place in Canada (which I think all of Sara’s books do actually) and you might recognize some of the places used which helps to anchor the book I think.
Meryn has a secret that she needs to confess to Jesse. Jesse has to try to stay safe from the persecution and not jeopardize his job. All the while there are people who’re around with an intense hatred for Christians.
This novel reads fast and furious and you’re not going to be able to put it down. And yes, you have to read book one first!
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from JustRead Publicity Tours. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. The Darkness Deepens by Sara Davison is the second book in the three-part series. I reached out to the author because I was looking to read the third book, and I could not find it. She wrote me back and said she is re-releasing all the books, and they will have new covers and updated content. The third book is due for re-release in July 2025. This book is again filled with faith references as it seems the third book will be as well. I certainly appreciate that, since it is a Christian book. This book was just as good as the first one, if not better, so I had to read the third book and I will. Meryn, after the first book finds herself in a good bit of trouble. She is now classified by the law as a felon. She is trying to stay out of too much more trouble, but with the situation of persecution worsening toward Christians in the story, she is having a hard time. She has her brothers come to live with her, so she has some more support and that makes it a little easier. He older sister, mentioned in the first book comes back all of a sudden and causes a big stir and it is anyone’s guess as to what she is really up to, but it probably no good. Meryn still has Jesse, but she has a secret that may change their relationship for good. Jesse is in love with Meryn and he wants nothing more than to ask her to marry him, but he is keenly aware that something is preventing Meryn from wholly committing to their relationship. He has learned that sometimes he just needs to give Meryn space, and she will eventually come out with whatever is bothering her, though he is not sure if that will happen this time. There are some unexpected twists and turns in the plot of this book that you will not see coming, but the author does not shy away from the harsh possibilities of a future persecution of Christians. The scenes presented in this book and the first book are very plausible. I am sure the next one will present some more as well. This book was so good, and I cannot wait tot read the third and final one in this series. I totally recommend this book and if you have not read the first one, what are you waiting for, grab it and binge read up to this one and I am sure you will be just as anxious as I am to get on with the third one to find out what finally happens. I acquired this book independently, all the opinions expressed are my own.
Dystopian is one of those genres that I typically shy away from due to their content almost always messing with my head, but when I saw that one of my favorite authors wrote a dystopian romantic suspense, I thought I would give it a shot.
I haven’t been in the best headspace lately, and this is a heavier read than I had originally thought. There were times that I had to stop and take a break, but my curiosity had me picking it back up time and time again. Sara Davison is such an incredible writer and paints such a vivid picture of what these characters are going through that you’re connected before you even realize what is going on. While I have been fighting my own personal darkness, this story does speak to perseverance and fighting the good fight and gives me a hope that I greatly needed during this time.
True to form, I jumped in mid-series, but the author did a wonderful job of filling in the gaps while also not letting up on the suspense. There are multiple topics tackled that could be triggering for some, but it is all handled in the upmost respect despite its depressing nature. There are unexpected twists, turns, and moments that I felt deep in my marrow. There is one scene in particular that will stick with me for a long time, the moment so incredibly heartbreaking yet paints such a beautiful picture at the same time. The writing is incredible.
This is going to be one of those stories that is not for everyone. It is raw, intense, and could be something that could happen in the future, which was the scariest aspect for me. But amid the gritty, there is a thread of hope and strength that only comes from supportive relationships and faith, and the story is not over. I can’t wait to see the conclusion of this insane situation in future volumes and plan on reading the first novel to get the full picture. Such an impactful story!
*I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher through JustRead Tours. All views and opinions expressed are completely honest, and my own.
It's definitely a brave new world in Canada in the 2050s. Captain Jesse Christensen has embraced the faith of Jesus; but due to new laws and penalties, he's keeping it a secret. For now. The woman he loves, Meryn O'Reilly, has already been outed as a believer due to some past actions. The most recent consequence of her actions (and faith) is that she's required to wear a bracelet that identifies her as Christian (as well as providing a technological history of her crimes and perpetrations). Thus far, the two are pretty safe; but more danger is coming toward them.
One of Jesse's superior officers has extreme hatred for Jesse, and he looks for opportunities to torture his subordinate. (Maybe worse.) Meryn and Jesse have to sneak out at night to see each other; and Meryn's half sister is an informant for the government. But even on school playgrounds, kids and adults aren't safe.
If you enjoy end-time fiction, I think you'll really like The Darkness Deepens. There are many surprises along the way; interesting characters; and those who're willing to embrace fully the faith of Jesus. (And, of course, their opposites.)
I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions shared here are my own.
Persecution of Christians is rapidly increasing, and Jesse, as a secret Christian and captain in the Canadian army, is in the position of having to uphold laws he hates, while secretly helping the Christians as best he can. His growing relationship with Meryn is at once an encouragement and a distraction - and though his commanding officer is his best friend and a sympathiser, his lieutenant is a deadly enemy of both and will bring them down if he gets half a chance. Will Jesse and Meryn be able to navigate both the difficulties of a new relationship and the dangers of being a Christian in an anti-Christian world?
Persecution is something Christians in the Western world haven't had to face much of recently, but it seems increasingly probable for the future. And I find books like this both inspiring and thought-provoking in terms of our potential response to such things. The story kept me on the edge of my seat throughout, with the danger they face, the difficulty of knowing how to act, and also the relationships they forge. I enjoyed getting to know Jesse and Meryn better, not to mention Kate, Ethan and Caleb, too - it's not just that it makes me think, it's also an enjoyable read. It does follow closely on from book 1 and is probably best read as part of the series, but could also be read on its own. Now I'm just waiting eagerly for book 3... please?
Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.
This is the second book in this rereleased series. I had not had a chance to read it prior to its rerelease but I’m loving it. I’ve not read too much in the dystopian genre but this is well done. We can see so many parallels in life today and how this future doesn’t actually seem absurd at all. Which is a bit frightening. However, we know (and take comfort in) the fact that we are not in control, and the One who is has it all in hand.
We are already facing this issue - though not quite as serious yet - in our public schools and workplaces. Our kids being told that Jesus is a fairy tale. People are suppressing their faith on social media because they are scared some employer will look into their profile and they’ll be in trouble. It’s a slippery slope. It’s common to see crosses and fish, but what if it was an unremovable bracelet handed to you by the government? During a time that even having a Bible is a crime? Are you a true Christian or a Christian of convenience? It’s a question that should cause all of us to examine our actions and motives.
Woven into this Christian dystopian novel is romance, friends, and family. Terrorism, crime, and uncertainty abound. This is a saga series. I wait on the edge of my seat for the next installment.
I received an ARC of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Romantic Suspense novels were not a genre that I wasn't interested in for a long while. I discovered Sara Davison series about 4 years ago and I have been hooked on this genre ever since. The Darkness Deepens is Book 2 of the The Day Draws Near series. I read Book 1 in this series and have been anxiously awaiting this book!
I LOVE that the story is set in Canada in 2054 and we have the main characters from Book 1, Meryn and Jesse, in this story also. Jesse and Meryn have a growing relationship, but have to meet in secret and keep their relationship "hush hush". Jesse is a solider and he knows that Lieutenant Gallagher does not like Christians, so he hides the fact that he has become a Christian. Meryn really wants an even deeper relationship with Jesse, but her past isn't something she is proud of. Can Jesse stay safe from Gallagher and his hate towards Christian? Can Meryn and Jesse reveal things that might hurt their relationship or make it stronger?
I can honestly say that this series is intriguing my interest in Dystopian genre, a genre that I haven't really every had an interest in. The book starts out strong and the action and suspense make the book a PAGE TURNER. The book is one of Suspense, Danger, Romance, and Faith. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Suspense with Romance. AMAZING BOOK!
The Darkness Deepens is book two in the Day Draws Near series that is written by Sara Davison. I have read book one, and would recommend you read them in order. This is an end of times book. This is not my usual genre. However, I really like the way that the author has written what the future might look like. You will be drawn into the story right away. This book is set in the 2050's.
Captain Jesse Christensen is a Christian. Unfortunately he cannot live his faith out loud. He has to keep it hidden. Lieutenant Gallagher’s hatred for the Christians in their city. As Gallagher’s power grows, it becomes clear that his connections go much further up the chain of command than anyone realized, putting all believers, especially Jesse, in extreme danger.
Meryn O’Reilly is the love of Jesse's life. Because she has been tagged as a believer, they have to meet in secret. Meryn wants to surrender her heart to Jesse, but there are some things that are holding her back. She also has to follow certain rules to try and stay in line. Jesse, being in the military has to enforce rules against Christians.
This book drew me in within the first few pages. The book is well written, the characters are well developed. Thank you to the author, publisher and JustRead Publicity Tours for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.
I was thrilled to have the second book in this series ready for me to read. Book Two continues right after The End Begins. Jesse has grown beyond just being a soldier; he has truly embraced his faith as a Christian. While being a soldier offers him many benefits, it also brings significant challenges. His relationship with Meryn develops further, and he tries to support and protect her, but they face a powerful army and numerous threats around them. Meryn understands that her future is at risk, and Jesse's safety is also uncertain.
Both Meryn and Jesse are relatable characters. Their deep feelings for each other are clear, yet they struggle with their own fears and past experiences. The story kept me interested and often left me sitting on the edge of my seat. It’s a novel that not everyone may be able to handle because it’s raw and intense, and very unsettling with the possibility of it becoming reality someday. There’s a shocking and emotional moment near the end that really broke my heart and I absolutely did not see it coming. Even with the tough situations, there’s a glimmer of hope and strength that comes from their strong relationships with family and friends and their faith in their beliefs. I look forward to discovering how this series wraps up and what awaits Meryn, Jesse, and those they care about.
The Darkness Deepens really brings home the fact that we live in a fallen world filled with flawed people who are only one step away from grace.
Jesse is a Canadian soldier living in a not too distant future where Bibles are banned, and Christians are persecuted. Through his association with Meryn and her family he’s found faith for himself, and it isn’t long before circumstances put it to the test.
The content of the book could be frightening in light of recent things in the news concerning Christians, but I find it’s filled with a message of hope, a reminder of a God who isn’t distant but with us through every difficult situation, who uses what we don’t understand for his purposes, and draws us into community with other believers.
The characters are all well written, believable, and are people I can relate to on many levels. Each one has something they’re dealing with as the story unfolds but each chooses faith as they see God move in unexpected ways.
I recommend this book and look forward to the next book in the series. I was given a copy courtesy of Mountain Brook Fire through Interviews and Reviews. This is my honest opinion.
I have nothing left to give. Have you left me too? If you can use a completely broken man with nothing to offer you, I’m yours. Do with me what you will.
The author takes us deeper into a world that none of us would want to live in. How can they stand up for what they believe with the government incarcerating, beating and even murdering those who are vocal about their Christianity? Meryn along with her friends and family are stumbling along, praying they will not cross that line of no return. Captain Jesse Christensen is trying to stay on the inside in an effort to protect those he loves. Will more be asked of these believers - more than they can take?
Between a killer virus and more than one informant, you will keep on the edge of your seat, wondering what else could happen. An early copy was received through Mountain Brook Fire and BookFunnel. These thoughts are my own and were in no way solicited.
Excellent dystopian story that’ll leave you craving for more!! The second installment of The Day Draws Near series will take you on a roller coaster ride of steep highs followed by plunging lows as the story winds through twists and turns! This book is very well written and the plot will keep you racing through to the end. The characters are believable and you can’t help loving them and wanting to see them make it through this crazy world they are now living in. And best of all is the the faith and perseverance that the characters show, even to the point of forgiving their enemies, exemplifying exactly how Christ has called us to live!! I loved this book and can’t wait to read the next installment!! I would suggest reading this series in order as the story line continues through each book. Highly recommend this book and this series!! So excited to read the next one!
The Dragon Roars is the second book in The Seven trilogy. I read the first some time ago, and found it both fascinating and frightening. This second story is set in 2054. Canada is under martial law, and Christians are being persecuted and denied their rights, even thought the government is still considered to be a democracy.
Add to that tension the relationship between Christian bookstore owner, Meryn O'Reilly and army captain Jesse Christiansen, and the stress of the situation builds even more. As the world takes on a dystopic hue, Christians must decide how strong their loyalties are to Christ, and how much they are willing to suffer for his name.
The characters are strongly set up, and the plot in this novel takes on several completely unexpected turns, especially near the end. Now I need to read the third and final installment of the story.
The Dragon Roars leaves off where The End Begins left off, and does an excellent job of continuing the story. Sara draws on history to build a chillingly believable futuristic setting where Christians are persecuted and considered the terrorists. I loved seeing how the story developed for Meryn and Jason, especially with Jason having become a Christian and yet still being in the Army. The ending made me glad that I had the third book to go right into! I highly recommend this series! I received this book from Just Read Tours. This is my honest review and is in no way influenced by receiving a complimentary copy.
I absolutely loved Book 2! It continues the story of Meryn and Jesse - both Christians living in a increasingly hostile environment in Canada. The year is 2054 and laws continue to tighten around those who profess to be believers. Now Meryn's best friend and her family have been targeted and once again, Jesse is caught in the middle. Can he use his influence to help? What will it cost him in the end? With fast-paced suspense woven alongside intrigue and sinister characters, you'll be up way past bedtime flipping pages! I am eagerly anticipating the Book 3!

The 2nd book in the series and even more of a dystopian/end times story. This story focuses more on the character of Jesse and his budding belief in God and delves a bit into his relationship with Meryn O'Reilly. I love how he works through his beliefs and they work through their relationship. Trust is a big thing, and will the secrets both have drive them apart when finally revealed?
Contending with a new found belief while working for those trying to snuff that belief out isn't easy for Jesse. Neither us his growing relationship with Meryn, who his Lt and others see as the enemy. But Meryn is holding a secret that could save or break their relationship.
This second book in the trilogy was as intense or more so than the first one. There were some unexpected twists in the plot that I didn't expect, but that is part of what makes the story believable.
An incredible story that I never knew where it was going. So many surprises and difficult experiences. A great story for those who like Christian stories about what the future might hold.
Wow! This was truly a very intriguing book. The things described in this are mind boggling. The dangers that go on are all around them. It definitely is a cliffhanger and leaves you wanting to know more about how it all plays out in the future.
