My Life in His Paws is the story of the amazing dog who gave back someone's freedom and confidence. Wendy Hilling has a rare skin condition which means her skin is very delicate. Every moment is difficult and causes pain. It affects the body inside and her throat is very narrow and she can stop breathing at any time. But eight years ago Wendy's life changed forever. She met Ted, the Golden Retriever, and he became her full-time carer. He has saved her life more times than she can remember, always watching and listening, and Wendy is now entirely reliant on him. This is the story of Wendy and her incredible bravery living with a disability and battling against the odds. It's also the story of Ted, the extraordinary assistance dog, and the unique relationship between a human and animal and the extraordinary things animals are capable of.

I feel embarrassed reviewing a book with such a sentimental title, but it would be dishonest not to at least stop by for a minute and say that this is a marvellous read for animal lovers.
I love animals, and in spite of having my fingers burnt a hundred times over I still reach up onto the library bookshelf whenever I see a new furbaby story. This is not a rewarding activity. Most of these books are truly awful.
But this one isn't. The woman who wrote it has an incredibly debilitating disease affecting her skin - it flakes off at barely a touch, often leaving her in pain. For instance for most of the book she is unable to eat solid food, but lives on liquids, as her throat is too tender to swallow anything else. Having said that, she barely mentions her own problems, but concentrates instead on her great passion for animals. She and her lovely husband (who is equally besotted with animals) have three golden retrievers over the years, and two of them become her helpers. The seriousness of her condition means that they play an extremely important role, and in conjunction with the organisation "Canine Partners" she trains them to be her assistants. (One dog to start with, and then later, the second dog takes over...) On two occasions at least, the second dog saved her life. The book however is very upbeat. Full of love, tenderness, loyalty and fun. My favourite part is where she gives her retriever in training the wrong command - and instead of putting his paws up on the cash-out desk in the supermarket, to hand over her purse, he actually jumps up right on top of the desk, much to the surprise of the cashier......who fortunately liked dogs!
This really is a great read. It's mushy and gooey and sentimental (how could it be otherwise?) but what a wonderfully brave woman, and what lovely, lovely dogs.

Faithfull
I chose the rating because its well written, but the combination of both the writer and the dogs that the family had showed both utter devotion to each other,making a great team to achieve a lot of goals in some rough times.

A truly inspirational story, its both heartwarming & sad. It is well written & tells the story of Wendy's astonishing life battling with a rare skin condition called EB & how dogs have helped her to be independent & overcome many difficulties.
This book is an amazing 'tail' on the relationship between Wendy and her dog Ted - a must read for all dog lovers.

What an absolutely superb book this was. I really, really enjoyed it. Wendy is so brave in telling her story and it really gives an insight into her life and her complete love of dogs. I really would recommend it as a brilliant read.

Brilliant story regarding a wonderful helping dog. Just shows what these dear creatures can be trained to do to help us humans, Couldn't put it down!

So inspiring. Wendy has a horrible illness she was born with, EB, which means everything most people take for granted (like swallowing your meals), is very difficult. Her amazing trained dog helps her so much.

Wonderful wonderful book! What an incredible lady, living with (and really living!) such a debilitating condition, and her amazing dogs, you can feel their bond on every page, just an incredible book that I will never forget reading. I got this from the library but loved it so much I've ordered my own copy today as I know I will re read many times. If you love dogs then read this! also gives an insight into EB which is a little understood condition x

Beautiful story
I really enjoyed the story. The lady has the most horrible of daily struggles and reading about her wonderful dogs and how they help is fascinating. As a lover of dogs myself, I found the book emotional but written with love. I have so much respect for assistance dogs.

Enthralling story
A fantastic book about the love between a human and a dog. I liked learning about how a dog can be trained to assist a disabled person. Reading about Ted and his intelligence, when helping Wendy, was very humbling and intriguing. There were dramatic moments, but also times that were pure bliss. I loved this story.

Knjiga, ki me je navdušila. Ne toliko zaradi sloga, v katerem je napisana, ampak predvsem zaradi avtorice, ki je neverjetno pogumna ženska, in zaradi vseh čudovitih ljudi in živali, ki ji pomagajo premagovati ovire.

Read really quickly in one afternoon. Enlightening about the condition and truly amazing a dog can be so helpful. The ones I see normally are so badly behaved it does seem most people don't ask enough of their dogs.

This book is about a woman writing about her life with EB. In the book, she trains her own dog, and suffers multiple tragic events. I wantedto cry, however I don't know how to cry. (There is nothing wrong with me, don't worry)

Enlightening
Loved this book. So interesting- not only about the condition EB, which despite being a trained nurse, I’d never come across, but the training of an assistant dog. What an inspirational lady Wendy is!

February 9, 2023it isn't often that I sit up to read & today not feeling 100% decided to rest for the day. This book is so well written that I could picture the dogs doing everything. Giving my copy to a friend who has Golden Retriever Rescued dogs.

Wonderful story about a lady suffering with ED and how dogs helped her to live a wonderful life. Very heartwarming story also sad when the dogs passed away. Very well written and I could feel the connection through the words that Wendy had with her dogs. Definitely worth a read.

Dieses Buch ist eines der Bücher, die mir so sehr ans herzen gingen, worüber ich im Nachhinein noch Gedanken gemacht habe und immer noch mache.
Nach den ersten fünf Seiten war ich den Tränen schon so nahe, dass ich sie nur mit größter Mühe zurückhalten konnte.
Das Schicksal der Protagonistin Wendy ist so bewegend und herzzerreißend und ich wünsche wirklich niemandem diese Krankheit, und zwar nennt man sie umgangssprachlich Schmetterlingskrankheit, denn die Haut der Betroffenen ist so dünn, wie die Flügel eines Schmetterlings.
Zwischen Wendy und all ihren Hunden, die sie jemals besessen hat, gibt es einen besondere Freundschaft, Pflicht und Liebe.
Am Anfang erzählt Wendy auch von ihrer Jugendzeit, die sie im Internet verbrachte. Ihr wurde immer erzählt, dass ihre Eltern sie nicht mögen und das nahm sie sich so zu Herzen, dass sie sich ihren Eltern nicht mehr anvertraute. Jedoch hat sie sich eines Tages mit ihren Eltern ausgesprochen und sie durfte das Internat verlassen und zu ihren Eltern zurückkehren. Ins Internat ging sie nur, da die Ärzte meinten, für ihre Haut wäre es das Beste.
Wendy empfindet für alle Tiere eine wunderbare Liebe. Jedes Tier, egal wie es aussieht, wird bei ihr mit offenen Armen empfangen. Sie päppelt jedes Tier auf und gibt niemals die Hoffnung auf, dass ein Tier später kein glückliches Leben leben wird.
Sie beweist übrigens auch ganz viel Geduld mit ihren Hunden und gibt niemals die Hoffnung auf. Sie liebt einfach jedes Tier und vor allem Golden Retriever.
Das Buch lässt sich total schnell lesen. Wenn man in der Geschichte ist, fühlt es sich so an, dass man gerade erst angefangen hat, jedoch das Buch schon vorbei ist.
Leider gibt es auch einen kleinen Kritikpunkt, der aber nicht so dramatisch ist. Ich hätte mir etwas mehr über die Kinder von Wendy gewünscht. Wo sie leben und wie es ihnen heute geht. Wie das Verhältnis zu ihrer Mutter und dem Stiefvater ist.
Dieses Buch hat mich so sehr gepackt, dass ich mich selbst mit dieser Krankheit auseinander gesetzt habe. Daraufhin habe ich ein Video auf YouTube gefunden, dass ich euch gerne im Anschluss verlinken würde.

Eines meiner absoluten Lieblingsbücher.
In diesem Buch geht es um eine junge Frau die an der Krankheit rezessive, dystrophe Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) leidet. Die Ärzte prophezeien ihren Eltern das sie einen frühen Tod sterben wird, aber je älter sie wird desto besser lernt sie mit ihrer Krankheit umzugehen. Wir begleiten sie auf ihrem beschwerlichen Weg, auf dem sie lernen muss das es leider Dinge gibt die ihr verwehrt bleiben. Doch sie lässt sich davon nicht unterkriegen und lässt sich nicht einreden das sie etwas nicht kann, denn dann möchte sie es erst recht machen. Wir begleiten sie auf dem Weg einen Assistenzhund zu bekommen und diesen auch selbst auszubilden mit der Unterstützung einer Organisation. Man erfährt in dem Buch in wie vielen Dingen einem ein Hund wirklich eine Unterstützung und sogar Lebensretter sein kann. Ich fand das Buch einfach schön zu lesen. Es war interessant zu erfahren welchen Weg so ein Tier durchlaufen muss um wirklich ein Assistenzhund werden zu können und wie sehr man sich als Mensch dann auch auf dieses Tier verlassen kann. Es ist auch nicht jeder Hund dazu geeignet ein Assistenzhund zu werden. Sie müssen spezielle Prüfungen durchlaufen und erst dann kann man mit der Ausbildung beginnen. Ich kann dieses Buch sehr empfehlen da es einen echt berührt und man wirklich noch mal sieht wie wertvoll und wundervoll Tiere sind.
