Chris Claremont is a writer of American comic books, best known for his 16-year (1975-1991) stint on Uncanny X-Men, during which the series became one of the comic book industry's most successful properties.

Claremont has written many stories for other publishers including the Star Trek Debt of Honor graphic novel, his creator-owned Sovereign Seven for DC Comics and Aliens vs Predator for Dark Horse Comics. He also wrote a few issues of the series WildC.A.T.s (volume 1, issues #10-13) at Image Comics, which introduced his creator-owned character, Huntsman.

Outside of comics, Claremont co-wrote the Chronicles of the Shadow War trilogy, Shadow Moon (1995), Shadow Dawn (1996), and Shadow Star (1999), with George Lucas. This trilogy continues the story of Elora Danan from the movie Willow. In the 1980s, he also wrote a science fiction trilogy about female starship pilot Nicole Shea, consisting of First Flight (1987), Grounded! (1991), and Sundowner (1994). Claremont was also a contributor to the Wild Cards anthology series.

First time reading a xmen graphic novel, and honestly? I understand why the movie trilogies have fumbled the phoenix storyline. It’s complicated and messy (but in a good way) there’s so much that you simply can’t stick into a trilogy, was a very educational read tho 👏🏻

This was my first experience both with the X-Men of that era (1979-1980) and with Pocketbook format. The first one is good, a great single story going through all of the book with dramatic ending, while the other works only to some degree. On one hand, the art is simple enough that it doesn't lose much in the smaller form factor but on the other hand, the text becomes a little too small and it's hard to read it when it's near the inner edge of the page due to the binding. The lower price justifies it, though. It works fine for something that you're not sure that you want the best quality.

So the story details the downfall of Jean Grey and her converting into the cosmic being known as Dark Phoenix. We've got drama from her interactions with the team and in the end a scene of enormous destruction that gives me Jim Starlin vibes. I'm also surprised how Claremont neatly ties the story practically in the last two or three pages. The team is nearly down, the enemy has just shown her tremendous power again but in the end the cornered author makes a twist and comes back with a vengeance, so to speak.

I just finished reading the Panini Pocket Book version of this and I loved it, well... the last few episodes, not so much the rest of it. I mean, it's good, but the first half is not really that interesting or related to the dark phoenix, and the last part seems a little bit rushed/compressed. I wish the dark phoenix crisis would have last a little bit longer, make the X-Men fugitives trying to defend Jean Grey, build it up until the moment where she decides to sacrifice herself, and then show us the reaction of her friends, their grief. It's a great compilation but I just think it starts one episode too soon and also ends up one episode too soon.

Naturally a must for all X-Men fans, the dark Phoenix saga tells of what happens to Jean Grey as she loses control of the entity inside her known as Phoenix. The story is gritty and dramatic aswell as being a classic in comic history. The collection also contains the Proteus storyline.

The drawings have aged over time but this just adds more depth and nostalgia, and its great that this has not been modernised

Many years ago I picked up one of the issues in the middle of this sequence and was completely lost and interested. This was an interesting read of what happened when Jean Grey fought her alter ego Phoenix and the consequences.

This isn't all of the tale and some of the rest of it sets up some very interesting future issues for the characters.

I've heard so much about this story arc and finally managed to buy a cheap copy. It was entertaining and I'm sure that back in the day it had a solid story continuity that Marvel-Zombies enjoyed. I enjoyed the book and was pleased I'd finally gotten round to reading it. The art by Byrne/Austin and writing by Claremont was good solid comic book material
