Bishop's War

Rate this book
This fast-paced and action-packed suspense thriller introduces us to Special Forces Sergeant John Bishop, decorated war hero, and nephew of crime boss, Gonzalo Valdez. After returning home from Afghanistan John’s hopes for a peaceful future are quickly shattered when he is catapulted back into the global war on terror through a succession of life-threatening events and corrupt intrigue. He battles against terrorist operatives in New York, a powerful Afghan warlord, and a psychopathic billionaire with powerful White House connections. When John’s uncle gets involved, he proceeds to treat John’s enemies to a bitter taste of mob vengeance. From that point on the ride speeds up and the reader will have to hold on for dear life. This is a thriller not to be matched for intensity and breathless excitement—not for the faint-hearted.

Rafael Amadeus Hines is a native New Yorker with Panamanian, Jamaican, and Irish roots, who was born and raised on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Dipping into his early Alphabet City memories, he loosely based many of the characters in his first novel, Bishop’s War, on the people he grew up with, and adapted many of his own experiences into the book as well.
Rafael is a former Jazz club owner and restaurateur, and has worked in the financial and energy markets for over twenty years. On 9/11 he watched his office along with all the others in the Twin Towers come crashing down and, like many New Yorkers on that day, he anticipated follow up attacks to take place throughout the city. Years later he envisioned a lone citizen soldier preventing these attacks and the hero Sgt. John Bishop appeared on paper.
Rafael is the father of three and still lives in the New York neighborhood where he grew up. A voracious reader of suspense thrillers, his writing career was inspired by legendary artist-authors Elmore Leonard, John Sandford, Stephen Hunter, James Lee Burke, and Tom Clancy. He is currently working on the second novel in the Bishop series, Bishop’s Law

Terrorists and the heroes who risk their lives to protect us from them have been part of our national psyche since September 11, 2001. The author of Bishop’s War took the events of that day to heart, melding unthinkable acts of mass murder with uncommon selflessness and bravery. The result is a story of valor and love of family and country against all odds. It sizzles with tension from the first pages and electrifies all the way through. It’s a nonstop fight to the finish that had me glued to my Kindle. I can’t remember reading anything as complex and intriguing and intense as this book. I was thrilled to find out that a second book—Bishop’s Law—is already in the works. If this story doesn’t find its way to the big screen, I’ll be shocked. Bravo, Mr. Hines! Bishop’s War is a winner!

It has a lot of different plots taken place. Regardless, it was intersting. This book is not for those of a weak stomach. I only gave it 4 stars for I wanted to know about the author and how it ties to the book. I also want to know the research methods used. Yes, I understand it is fiction. Regardless, I want to know how real this is. My daddy and uncle served. If your looking for a non stoping thriller, grab this book.

P. S My apologies. I am doing something stupid with spellcheck.

Probably the best and most horrifying first chapter I've ever read.

I often see books billed as an "adrenaline-filled thrill ride". Most often those claims fall flat but in this case, that tagline wouldn't nearly describe the reading experience of this book.

America's most decorated hero has retired from the war zone. Home for less than a few hours and he's already got legal issues coming face to face with a true evil. That chance encounter will shape the rest of his life. The body count reaches triple digits and the violence stretches around the world.

There are several plot lines in this book and at times it seems excessive and overwhelming. John and his family are literally being attacked from multiple sides. As the story unfolds we have terrorist, assassins, the police, and former government officials all after John's blood.

The enemies are evil but even the good guys are various shades of gray. Johnny's family just happens to be a powerful crime family in New York with powerful connections and a motto much like NATO, an attack on one is an attack on all. Combine the lethality of a decorated war hero with the resources and power of a crime family that is willing to spill blood and you can expect that bodies will pile up.

I could be considered an action/thriller junkie and vigilante books are some of my favorite. I can honestly say that by the end of this book I felt tired from the constant stream of action that this book contains.

I think that Mr. Hines could have achieved the same reading experience with fewer threads. While I loved the book and was sad that the next book wasn't available yet I will say that a book like this, where everything but the kitchen sink is thrown at the good guys can be a real turn off to some readers.

As with most fiction books you have to be willing to suspend reality at times but there were some times in this book that I had to question some of the actions. None the less this is everything I look for in a book and more.

At the conclusion of this book, it looks like the author is going to continue the insane number of plot lines into the next book, although I hope that he will have some restraint and resolve some of them early on. The second book also looks like a continuation of this book with essentially the same groups with different actors aligned with even more powerful enemies all out for John and his families blood.

Generally, I won't read a book in this genre that continues the same plot line through multiple books as I feel like it's laziness on the authors part but given the level of action in this book I'm willing to give him one more book to wrap it up. I want to see the characters in new and different situations with each book.

If you're an action/thriller fan looking for a new series to read then this is the one you've been looking for.

Strap on Your Seatbelt!

Wow! This book gets the adrenaline pumping from chapter one, and never takes the foot off the accelerator. Military action fans will not be disappointed.

The hero, John, faces enemies from every angle, foreign and domestic. His odds of survival, much less success, are astronomical.

I love the way Hines expertly blends together multiple plotlines, never leaving the reader confused. His treatment of “good” vs. “evil” is nuanced, making the characters and story relatable and realistic.

The pace and non-stop action will sometimes make you pause to catch your breath.

I highly recommend Bishop’s War to all military action adventure fans. I eagerly await future installments in this series.

A Hard-Hitting, Modern-Day Thriller Keeps You Glued to the Pages!

If this is Rafael Amadeus Hines' first novel I have only one question... Why haven't we heard of him until now?

Decorated war hero John Bishop returns from Khost, Afghanistan to New York and winds up in jail with his cousin Felix after a drunk-driving arrest. While in jail a prisoner picks a fight with John, who quickly learns the Special Forces man in uniform is not a man you trifle with. John teaches him a lesson, but this man sharing a cell with him turns out to be one of the most deadly enemies the Special Forces soldier will ever face.

When John Bishop thwarts a terrorist attempt to kill many innocent civilians in the middle of New York, only to find he's wrestled with just the tip of the iceberg, things get even hotter for the grizzled vet. He faces a disgraced billionaire politician with an ego the size of his bank account, the hatred of a terrorist cell leader, and a terrorist faction leader back in Afghanistan. Unable to fight them all on his own, John gets help from his family, led by Mafioso leader Gonzalo Valdez, a tough hombre in his own right and with an army to back him up.

Just when John Bishop thinks he's safe, a professional hit man has him and his family in his sights...but who does he work for? Which enemy hired him to kill John Bishop?

'Bishop's War' is written with skill and imagination. It's a modern-day thriller that's page-turning in every way possible. The author writes in suspenseful style leaving readers mesmerized. One cannot help wonder if such a story is actually true, and if so, God help the person who gets under John Bishop's skin.

I enjoyed the story. It reminded me of The Godfather, with a little of Jason Bourne. Sure, it was over the top, but it was entertaining, nevertheless. Like when you watch Fast & The Furious. Just let the author take you where he will and hang on for the ride. The writing style is smooth and easy, and unpretentious. The author gives a backstory for almost every character, and that made them more real to me. The dialogue was ok. Nothing made me roll my eyes. There were characters who had strong beliefs, and some psychos, so, exaggerated and fanatical statements should be expected.

I've read some of the reviews and most of the negative comments concerned the superman-like qualities of John Bishop, the lead character. That he was unbelievable. But that's exactly why I enjoyed the book! I want to be taken into a world where there's this decorated, bigger than life hero who fought the bad guys --- and he did not die easily. Flawed heroes are fine, but too much of it can be tiring too. When I read stories like that, I feel like a psychiatrist, rooting for the hero to overcome his personal issues, and do the right thing and get on with it. John Bishop has his demons too. But he was a good soldier, who does what he needs to do.

John Bishop was just right. A killer when he needs to be, but with heart. A man with a strong sense of family, friendship, and loyalty.

Bishop's War is very violent, since the story is about a war between terrorists and the mob, it's supposed to be bloody and gory, with people dying on almost every page. The government agencies are just extras, relegated to the sidelines, so if you're looking for the authorities to stop the violence, they're not in control.

This book is not for the squeamish or the fainthearted, and it says so right there on the synopsis. So, if you don't like those types of stories, don't read it and then leave a 2 star review saying it's too violent.

But if you like a fast-paced, action-filled, entertaining, Rambo-type thriller, I would definitely recommend Bishop's War.

I will read the next book just to see what happens to Omar, the assassin hired to kill John Bishop. Hines knows how to create interesting villain-types. I liked Gonzalo Valdez more than John. It's so hard to hate a bad person when the author makes you understand why they became that way.

Although I write Historical Action Adventure novels myself, I enjoy reading other genres and Thrillers are a favourite of mind. ‘Bishop’s War’ was one of the very best that I’ve read for a very long time and I would put Rafael Amadeus Hines up there with the very best writers of this genre. ‘Bishop’s War’ is not for the squeamish or fainthearted, but if you like a gutsy thriller that tells it like it really is, then this is one for you. Be warned, once you start reading it you won’t want to put it down. It is action packed from page one to the very end and left me hoping that the sequel is published very soon. If you like the novels of Vince Flynn, Lee Child, Andy McNab and Chris Ryan, then you’ll be sure to like this.

You can tell that Bishop’s War is very close to the author’s heart due to the fine-tuned details that seemed to flow from Mr. Hines into the story line. The characters are very well developed…Our hero Sargent John Bishop was off-the-hook great! His character came to life with every page, you could sense the fire that burned inside of him which left you wanting to jump inside the book and work right beside him. The story line was very well developed and flowed perfectly.
The day the Twin Towers were flown into, not only did New York grieve, all of America grieved with them. I remember it as if it was yesterday.
In my opinion, no one but Mr. Hines could have written this book as perfectly as he did. You can sense the hard research time that went into his work with a fast, twisting plot, which involved the war on terror on our American streets in New York City, that led us to Afghanistan, the Government corruption was right on target, and a family crime syndicate.
This book completely engulfs you, and you don’t want to put it down. When you’re finished, it is as if you’ve lost a part of you. Very well done Mr. Hines, such fabulous work that should remind everyone to live life to the fullest each and every single day for tomorrow isn’t promised.

Bishop's War is a page-turner in every sense of the word. Amazingly, the book was written by first time author, Rafael Amadeus Hines, who writes like a seasoned pro. I thoroughly enjoyed following John Bishop's story and The terrorist threat he has to fight in the states after spending several years abroad. Hines does a masterful job in handling several key players and integrating them into the plot. I can't wait for book 2 in this series! Without question, Rafael Hines represents the future elite of political thriller writers.

Bishop's War is a story that grabs you from the very beginning and doesn't let you go until the end. However, the end will leave readers with many questions, which the author admits in his post words that a second book is coming in the future.

The story is excessively violent and extreme in action / adventure. John Bishop and his cousin, Felix, are both indirectly related to the biggest crime syndicate Don in New York / New Jersey. John is a Green Beret just coming out of a war in Afghanistan. After 12 years of fighting wars, he's looking forward to spending more time with his family and girlfriend. Many of the side stories and back stories are inter-related to one another, and all impact John or his family. Professional Assassins, who have never failed, are sent after him; the Director of Homeland Security also has a vendetta against John and Felix for embarrassing him and causing him his job...he joins those wanting to see John and his cousin, Felix, dead.

The two of them are celebrated heroes for stopping a terrorist group from setting off an awesome car bomb that would have killed thousands in a New York park, then suddenly, the two of them are sanctioned by the NYPD, FBI, CIA, etc. to find and destroy the terrorists. There is so much taking place in the story that it's impossible to list them all in a review. If you want to be entertained and don't mind continuously losing your breath, aren't squeamish about torture scenes, and don't mind over-the-top super hero type warriors, then this book is for you!

Mr. Hines does make John invincible - a perfect shot always killing his opponents with a single headshot. So many things within the story would never happen in real life...but who cares! Go Rambo, Go! The only reason I haven't given five stars in my review is due to the excessive errors throughout the story. It seems that many of them occurred during the editing process where one or more words were not removed after the correction. Nevertheless, it was quite a ride when overlooking the errors and Rambo-esque escapes from traps that the main characters continue to experience.

I was entertained and will purchase Rafael Hines' next installment about John Bishop!

Wish I had 10 stars to give!!!

I can't believe this is a first publication by a new author!! That's mind-blowing, especially after reading this awesome tale!! This book was waaay more than I expected and beyond anything I imagined!! You will LOVE John Bishop, the Valdez family and the Razor Team!! This book is impossible to put down! I found myself scheduling cooking for my family and other tasks required between chapters and even then often postponing as long as possible, hoping for a brief lull in the action, excitement and adventure...but they were few and far between! The action begins in the first few pages and doesn't let up! And it's GOOD!!!! Like amazingly EXCELLENT for a debut novel by a new author!!! And I am dying for the story to go on!!! Bring me the next book in the series, PLEASE!!!!! 😩

This is a skilfully-crafted, action-packed, bang up to date story, with heroes and anti-heroes emerging from the most unexpected of roots. These seriously well-painted characters are definitely not for the meek.
All rounded up at the end making any reader eager to begin Book 2, Bishop's Law.

A real page turner

Every chapter read made me more engrossed in the storyline. Very well written and wanting to read more, just to find out what was going to happen next.
Only issue that I have is that the story doesn't end with the final chapter. It continues with another book. Using the same characters is fine. Just begin a new storyline.

If a reader of revenge type thrillers likes books that have a lot of violent ends to the bad guys (I do), this book is something that will be right in your sweet spot. Some very unique methods of killing people off, aside from the normal terrorists and explosives.

The down side of this book is two fold. One, it's obvious that the author intends a follow up book as there are way too many loose ends. Secondly, it appears that the author wanted to write a lengthy book to tell his story and just kept adding sub plots along the way. The novel got way too busy in the middle stages. Then there's the predictability.

A fun read, but certainly nothing that is going to challenge the reader's logic.

An action packed fast paced thriller

An action packed fast paced thriller in the same genre as James Patterson and Tom Clancy. The book centers on John Bishop a special forces Sergeant who has just returned from Afghanistan looking forward to a more peaceful life. However it doesn’t take long before he finds himself pulled back in to the war on terror by fanatics operating in his hometown of New York. The other players involved are his uncle, crime boss Gonzalo Valdez, an Afghan warlord and a sociopath billionaire with powerful connections in Washington D.C.

The story is fast paced with lots of action, suspense and twists. The characters are true to life and evolve as the story develops. The way they handle and deal with situations is realistic. The main theme of the story ‘terrorism and government corruption’ is a very current one.

The book is set in New York and it shows that the author knows the place well. The surroundings are described vividly and in great detail.

Overall a great fast paced story, a real page-turner full of suspense and nicely written. Fans of action and suspense should give this book a try.

Bishop’s War isn’t just a great read, it’s a journey into the center of a world you never knew existed. The world created by Rafael Hines is so vivid you can hear it, smell it, and be horrified by it. Mostly set in the Manhattan’s East Village, ranging from the 1970s to present day, the characters, situations and steamrolling plot are masterfully crafted, and the details will leave you wondering how the author was able to get it all down on paper. The man at the center of it all, juvenile delinquent turned local legend war hero John Bishop, is a tapestry of loyalty, love, heroism, pride and intelligence. Bishop is also a complicated character, with flaws as real as the violence that tore a hole through his life. After reading Bishop’s War, it changes the way you look at Rafael Hines’ lifelong home, Manhattan’s Lower East Side, which he describes like one discusses an old friend. Be warned; you will never walk through Union Square again without looking over your shoulder. You may never get in a cab without wondering how many things are going on out there that you don’t know about, and never will, except if you read this entertaining, aggressive, frightening and triumphant novel.

Ironically I just finished watching The Last Don which stars Jason Gedrick.

This action/thriller is over 450 pages combining Green Beret sequences from Iraq and Afghanistan with an organized crime family in America. I mention the Mario Puzo mini-series because both illustrate the difficulty of escaping your heritage if you are born into a crime family, the integration of organized crime in American Society, and the shocking similarities between supposed legitimate business, government agencies, and the mafia.

This work of fiction uses real locations, events, and public figures and integrates them with fictional counterparts. These action heroes are larger than life and their experiences stretch the reader's credulity. The text reads like an action-movie summer blockbuster. It makes good reading and though one would hope it doesn't echo reality after 9/11 and the Boston Marathon Bombing one is left wondering....

First in a series that have yet to be written it would seem. The end of book one is not the cliffhanger some free teasers have been but many plot lines are left unresolved.

EXELLENT READ!!!
I was totally blown away by this fast paced, creative and well developed thriller. Afghanistan hero, John Bishop, returns home to New York believing his part in the war is over. But no! The blood has just begun to flow. His crime family ties have him being dragged through the underbelly of the city. John uses his specialized military training and unique skills to battle (and I mean BATTLE) his way through a spider-web of intrigue, shockingly finding its way into the ranks of our federal government, and-WOW-an ISIS terrorist plot. But it’s not all blood and guts. There is a host of witty and funny characters. I loved this book!! I’ll be waiting for the next one from Mister Hines.

Lots of action and adventure

This book was full of action and adventure but still managed to develop its characters. I quickly grew to admire and care about the character of John Bishop, and that did not change even when I learned about his family. Also, anyone he trusted, I accepted.

My negatives would be that it was hard to keep his family straight. There were a few times that I wondered if I had mixed up the names of John and his father or if the author had mistyped them in the novel. Other large family scenes sometimes suffered from this as well.

Also, John Bishop seems too good to be true-never failing etc. over a series that's going to get old for me..

This book has serious adrenalin running all the way through it. Lots of different threads to keep up with, but I wasn't overwhelmed by them, and enjoyed the fast pace. Most of the good guys would be bad guys in a different story, but I really wanted them to come out on top. The bad guys are seriously bad guys, and I found myself totally invested in Bishop's War. This book is not for the faint hearted, and is quite graphic in parts. This is a rip roaring tale, and the only thing preventing me from awarding five stars is several typos throughout. I hope this is rectified for other books in the series as they arrive, as I will certainly be reading them.

I'd been saving Bishops War for a week in the sun, wanting something fast paced and a bit harder hitting that the books I usually read and much kudos to Rafael Hines for delivering in excess of my expectations. Most novels lean towards being plot or character driven but to get an equitable balance between the two without sacrificing suspense is often hard. Bishops War is one of those examples where the author gets it absolutely right. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it and had no doubts about awarding it 5 stars.

As backdrop for his enthralling thriller, Rafael Hines really nails the uniquely frenetic, intense "street-level" energy and pulse of life on the lower east side.
Speaking as a native New Yorker, I had as much fun laughing at the dialogue of the richly relatable and warped, true-to-life characters as I did following their frightening story of peril and terror.
Hard to believe it's his first outing.

Rafael Hines spins an excellent tale of intrigue, family loyalty and brotherly love. The writer captures your attention from the very beginning and refuses to let go as he gets you to invest in and care about the characters he has created. It is certainly a good story well told. Fans of any other action thriller writer will certainly appreciate the fine work of Rafael Hines.

I give this book a big salute! Fast paced and thrilling read, with a cast of great characters. The main character is war hero Sgt. John Bishop. He fought in Afghanistan and has to continue the fight against terror in America. There are other enemies he faces, including his own personal demons. I liked the detailed descriptions and twists and turns. Highly recommend!

Bishop's War

I've read a lot of military thrillers and this ranks up there with the best. But, a warning for those with queasy stomachs, parts of this book may not be for you. There is a lot of blood spilled and a lot of gory detail. Besides that there is family, friendship, loyalty, profound sadness. I even shed a few tears. It's a face paced read with lots of action.
