About the author

Yuu Watase (渡瀬悠宇) is a Japanese shoujo manga-ka. She is known for her works Fushigi Yūgi, Alice 19th, Ceres: The Celestial Legend, Fushigi Yūgi Genbu Kaiden and Absolute Boyfriend. She likes all music, except heavy metal and old traditional music.

She received the Shogakukan Manga Award for shōjo for Ceres, Celestial Legend in 1997. Since writing her debut short story "Pajama de Ojama" ("An Intrusion in Pajamas"), Watase has created more than 80 compiled volumes of short stories and continuing series. Because of her frequent use of beautiful male characters in her works, she is widely regarded in circles[which?] as a bishōnen manga artist.[citation needed] In October 2008, Watase began her first shōnen serialization, Arata: The Legend in Weekly Shōnen Sunday.
Her name is romanized as "Yû Watase" in earlier printings of Viz Media's publications of Fushigi Yūgi, Alice 19th, and Ceres, The Celestial Legend, while in Viz Media's Fushigi Yūgi Genbu Kaiden and Absolute Boyfriend her name is romanized as "Yuu Watase". In Chuang Yi's English-language versions of Fushigi Yugi (spelled without a macron or circumflex), her name is romanized as "Yu Watase".

Imadoki!: Nowadays, Vol. 4 follows Tanpopo as she forms new relationships and both strengthens and ruins other relationships, and attempts to understand and express her true feelings, all while being accompanied by a cute fox named Poplar. There's a lot of drama and angst, so prepare yourself for some twists and turns on this bumpy, although enjoyable ride.

Man it really burns me up with people like Erika. I feel like she's just way too over dramatic. And I doubt that she really loves Koki. They don't even really know each other.

I think Tanpopo and Yoji make a cut couple, but I can tell that she really likes Koki.

I'm glad Arisa and her baby are ok. I really think she has turned over a new leaf, and is ready to be responsible and take care of her baby.

I can't wait to read the final volume. I mean I've read this series before so I do know what happens, but it was five years ago that I first read this series so there were a few things I had forgotten.

At its core, this is your standard shoujo manga about a naive country bumpkin who finds herself out of place at her new elite school. Tanpopo moves to Tokyo to attend a top school which largely consists of wealthy students or ones of influential families. She soon finds that her plan to make many friends won't be easy as everyone looks down on her because of her more simple background. Tanpopo doesn't give up that easily though and tries to face things with optimism. One student in particular has caught her attention: Kugyou might be the untouchable elite student, but Tanpopo knows of his secret love for gardening and is sure they can form a friendship around that.

While Imadoki has a plot like many others of its kind and you can guess the love interest from page one, I've actually always really enjoyed this manga. There is something nostalgic about it, and by that I am not even referring to having read this a long time ago. In fact, I read it quite a bit after it's publication and it is by no means one of the works that originally got me invested into manga. No, it's just the style and execution that bring together a lot of aspects I associate and like about manga from that time period. It is by no means perfect, but there's something very loveable about it.

Tanpopo certainly is a naive character, but not as bad as some people make her out to be. I like her and while she does seem a little slow in catching on, she does also see things for what they are. She initially gets bullied quite a bit and she just smiles it all away and acts like she doesn't understand what's happening. The truth is that she does fully understand the situation but decides to stand above it. I quite liked her attitude toward the bullies - she didn't let them discourage her nor did she let them rattle her and argue with them. Her insistence of making friends can come across as a little too idealistic, but friendship does become a core part of this story and it generally delivers a nice message.

I like the romance well enough but above all I really enjoy the friendships that form in this manga. They're a colourful bunch, perhaps a little tropey, but perfectly likeable. I loved the humour and nicknames they gave each other - I loved how they quarrelled and at the same time supported each other resolutely. Although it is generally a light-hearted manga, it does also cover a few darker subjects including but not limited to suicide and abortion. As this is not a long manga, it doesn't delve into great detail but I felt it handled these subjects fairly well.

On the down side, Imadoki has one of the most annoying meddling fiancées who only barely manages to earn some redemption toward the end. The plot is occasionally a little jumpy, especially for the latter two volumes. I can see why this is not everyone's cup of tea, but apart from these two issues, I really enjoy this manga and return to it every now and again. The art isn't Watase at her best but it certainly is cute.

Das Cover hat einen absoluten Wiedererkennungsfaktor für alle Fans der Mangas von Yuu Watase. Ihr Zeichenstil ist einfach einzigartig. Zu sehen ist hier die Heldin Tanpopo, wie sie eine Blume in der Hand hält und nachdenklich ins Nichts blickt, während man im Hintergrund die Gesichter von Kugyou und dessen Bruder ausmachen kann. Das passt ganz gut, wie ich finde, denn der emotionale Konflikt von Tanpopo, sich zwischen einem der Brüder zu entscheiden, kommt hier sehr gut zur Geltung.





Eigener Eindruck:

Obwohl der Gartenclub immer beliebter wird, steigt Tanpopo aus dem Club aus, was ihre Freunde ratlos zurücklässt. Auch dass sich das sonst so lebensfrohe Mädchen von allen abkapselt bleibt ihren Freunden nicht verborgen. Doch was ist geschehen? Dass die intrigante Erika ihre Finger dabei im Spiel hat, scheint keiner zu vermuten. Selbst Kugyou scheint sie plötzlich zu meiden. Einzig dessen Bruder scheint sie zu verstehen und versucht sie aufzumuntern, natürlich nicht ganz uneigennützig, denn er hat sich in Tanpopo verleibt. Und vielleicht ist es für Tanpopo nun an der Zeit Kugyou endgültig ziehen zu lassen und sich jemand anderes zuzuwenden…



Auch der vierte Teil der Reihe kann sich wieder absolut sehen lassen. Ich mag diese Reihe wirklich gern, wenn man von der einen oder anderen überdramatischen Übertreibung absieht. Man hofft als Leser, dass es ein gutes Ende für die Beziehung zwischen Tanpopo und Kugyou nehmen wird, aber in diesem Band nimmt alles eine dramatische Wendung, sodass alles verloren scheint und schließlich wendet sich Tanpopo Kugyous Bruder zu – eine Beziehung die nicht glücklich sein kann und das erkennen die beiden schlussendlich auch. Also scheint es doch wieder Hoffnung für Kugyou zu geben… Mit dem Charakter der Erika hat sich die Mangaka wirklich einen echt fiesen Charakter einfallen lassen. Ich mag sie einfach nicht und hoffe, dass sie ihre gerechte Strafe noch bekommt. Was ich wiederum richtig toll fand war die Tatsache, dass auch die Nebencharaktere wieder einiges durchleben. So versucht Arisu doch noch den Kindsvater in Form des Schulsprechers für sich zu gewinnen und das scheint auch ein gutes Ende zu nehmen. Ich jedenfalls freue mich nun schon auf den finalen Band – natürlich in der Hoffnung, dass mich Yuu Watase nicht enttäuscht und es ein Happy End für Tanpopo geben wird.



Fazit:

Für Fans der Serie ein absolutes Muss. Mädchen, die romantische Geschichten mögen, werden diesen Manga lieben.

Ha pasado mucho en el tomo y lo digo como algo bueno. En parte me gusta que no vayan a alargar lo de que salga con Yoji en vez de con el male lead, aunque se veía tanto venir que da penilla. Por otro lado no se como van a acabar con el personaje de Erika y más teniendo en cuenta el final del tomo... Ja veurem, solo espero que no haya ningún funeral, aunque pinta que el del abuelo quizá. Ah y casi me olvido, Arisa is THAT girl, la adoro y me alegro muchísimo de que espabilara a todos + la escena de Tsuki defendiendo a Tanpopo increíble, that's family!!

Honouring her bet Tanpopo leaves the planting club and starts dating Koki's brother Yoji!
Koki is still engaged to the unstable Erika but is determined to break it off....
OMG does this one leave you on a cliff hanger! Have volume 5 on hand.

Emotion overload - great characters, lovely story all wrapped up with Yuu Watase's super cute artwork.

While I prefer Watase's fantasy stories this one has grown on me. Thumbs up.

So why does Yoji look so different now???

Anyway, this volume rubbed me the wrong way in so many ways! Too many misunderstandings!!! Little communication! Tanpopo really quits the club just to later date Yoji???? And Yoji, who’s 20, wants to date a teenager???

The best part of this volume was Arisa having her baby and Saionji snapping off on Erika.

But the ending??? WHY CANT YOU JUST LET THEM BE TOGETHER?!!!!! STOP F*ckin with your readers!!!

I read these last two volumes out of order on accident, but I'm glad I know what happens next because the cliffhangers are intense!

I like Yoji as a character a lot, and I wish I could see him explored in more depth, perhaps even in his own series. He's so self aware and observant.

Tanpopo's effect on the other character's lives is really at the forefront of this volume. She's come so far since volume 1!

Trigger Warnings for Suicide, Attempted Suicide, Suicidal Thoughts.

Again, Erika is the rival that I cannot help but feel a bond to. Tanpopo is a ball of endless sunshine, while Erika is a light in a sealed box. I love the idea of the rose exchange, and did not really like the brother love rivalry. One volume left.

I really hate Tanpopo and Yoji as a couple, because she's still in school, a freshman right? And he's 20. So...yeah I'm glad it's clear they aren't going to be the endgame couple haha. This has been a dramatic and sort of whip-lashy series so far but I am invested enough to read the next and last volume.

Erika is an annoying character agh. But we are finally seeing more movement from both Tampopo and Kouki’s character development. Kouki is still being pressured by the family while Tampopo is allowing herself to feel “love” for someone in a romantic way. I honestly really like Youji for her, but I know that’s not how the manga series is gonna end. On to the next volume.

Losing the bet with Erika, Tanpopo resigns from the Gardening Club, and avoids even looking at Koki. As much as it's hurting her, it's hurting Tanpopo's friends even more and they begin to treat her coldly, and when they're not, they're mean to her. The only shoulder Tanpopo can find to lean on is Koki's brother and her new neighbor, Yoji. But now that Tanpopo has resigned herself to trying to forget about Koki, she begins to fall for Yoji and they end up dating. But is this what Tanpopo really wants? And on Koki's side, he's trying hard to find out why Tanpopo is acting so out of character, even though he is the only one that has noticed this isn't like her, and he finds out about the bet. As he finds out more and is left alone to think more, Koki is coming closer and closer to a deep revelation...


Yaaay, more Yoji!
Even though this was probably the best Goddamn volume in the whole series, I kept getting interrupted by bad things, so I have a terrible memory associated with this volume, sadly. *Sigh*. So I can't really express any feeling for this volume that actually pertains to this manga. :/ Man, I was so looking forward to it too! It was so juicy, and so much happened. I can barely even remember it, all I remember is the anger and hate that came with trying to fucking read when a certain attention whore wouldn't leave me alone and kept playing nasty tricks on me. It took me six fucking hours to finish it (I take one hour and forty minutes at the most to finish a single manga volume). *Sighs again*...

Tanpopo follows through on her agreement to quit the planting club after Erika kisses Koki. She refuses to speak to her friends, and everyone calls her - Arisa even visits. The stress from the visit causes her to go into labor, bringing everyone together again. In the meantime, Tanpopo begins dating Yoji.

This volume deals with some complex emotions: Tanpopo realizes that she still loves Koki, and that she's leading Yoji on. She struggles with saying this to him, though; Tanpopo has evolved from her simplistic optimism to something a little more realistic. Koki also has an emotional moment when he decides that the Kugyo family can't make his decisions for him any longer (though I wish we'd gotten to see more of his thoughts leading up to this point).

Yoji, however, breaks it off before Tanpopo can (conveniently). Koki breaks it off with Erika and it looks like the ending might happen right here in the fourth volume, but when Erika tries to kill herself, Tanpopo and Koki don't get a chance to talk. Tsukiko gives a great speech to Erika about friends mattering more than status, a huge change from the calculating girl Tanpopo met earlier in the school year; however, we see very little of this change happen: Arisa tells Tsukiko her priorities are wrong and bam! Tsukiko changes.

The artwork is still beautiful and the plot is well-paced. The humor returns in full force with Flippy's antics (asking to marry Koki, flipping in class, etc) and it meshes well with the otherwise serious tone of this volume.

Prettt, sebenarnya saya kurang suka saat Tanpopo menolak cinta dan kebaikan hati Youji.

Dohhh, apa sih yang dilihat Tanpopo dari diri Kouki yang klemer-klemer begitu? Nggak teguh pendirian dan tak bisa menolak aksi manipulasi Erika?

Enakan juga pacaran sama Youji yang jauh lebih matang dan dewasa (btw, kue hangat yang dibawa Youji saat berkunjung ke apartemen Tanpopo masih bikin saya ngiler sampai sekarang^^)

This volume picks up where volume 3 left off quite nicely. Everything I said about that volume pretty much fits here, though this one takes the stakes to higher level. It also contains the much needed character development for Erika, which takes her from being just another obstacle to a fleshed out character in her own right.

Tanpopo ini tipe cewek yang setelah ditolak bakal nerima cowok lain ya wkwkwk XD. Yahh mungkin karena baru pertama kali ngalamin jatuh cinta, tapi kayaknya nggak gini-gini amat hohoho ^o^ *btw, belum berpengalaman juga haha*. Kugyo emang klemar-klemer nggak jelas sih. Kalau aku bakal milih Youji sih *maksudnya Youji sama gw gitu hahaha*.
