Gotta love a main character whose introduction is him disintegrating his clothes and jumping, naked, off a cliff to his death. I think it perfectly brings to the front how intense of a character Tang San is going to be. Now, even though his new life story starts with him at 6 years old this is not a coming-of-age tale nor your run of the mill “underdog born with rare power” story. Tang San is an intelligent mastermind with a thirst for knowledge, an astronomical drive to improve his abilities, and a passion for building deadly weapons. He’s not a character here to ‘beat the odds’, he’s here to burn his mark into this world and he’s doing it damn well.

Besides Tang San, in these first few volumes we get to know the other six of the Shrek Seven Devils. They all have compelling personalities with a lot of room for growth:

At first I felt the three boys are quite too vulgar for their age, but honestly thinking back to high school it’s pretty easy to find teenagers like this. Dai Mubai, nicknamed Unrivaled Slut, has a short fuse but is a kind and dutiful leader to the team. Oscar has the unfortunate luck of having to recite some tasteless incantations to use the abilities of his sausage spirit, but he’s a high spirited, hardworking guy. Lastly is Ma Hongjun who I find the least interesting so far in the group as he’s mostly just a horndog.

As for the three girls I feel they have more variation in their personalities and a little more backstory peeking through. Xiao Wu is the female lead; she’s volatile, bad mouthed, and even stronger than Tang San (without taking up a teaching role as you often see with such a character). RongRong is a literal spoiled princess from a prestigious family learning very quickly that she’s not as great as she thought she was. Zhu Zhuqing is quiet and mysterious with some sort of grudge against Dai Mubai. With how interesting of characters they are it somewhat makes up for the fact that every young female character’s appearance is mostly described by their body figure and are often ogled at. All these girls are currently 14 and under, is it really necessary to frequently mention their breasts/butts?

Besides the characters the world building is truly A+++. In these volumes it goes into a lot of great detail about how the martial soul world works. The categorization of souls, spirit rings, ranks, and beasts. It can feel cumbersome at times but it fits well into the narrative since we’re going along with Tang San’s journey through school and himself learning all this information for the first time. You can tell a lot of thought has been put into everyone’s unique martial souls and ring abilities. We also get plenty of details about Tang San’s abilities from his past life, though usually in more bite sized chunks as he slowly starts to meld them with his new life. Due to the nature of the story, there’s a LOT of fighting. I can see some getting bored pretty easily going from fight to fight to fight, but most of the fights are pretty exciting and keep you on the edge of your seat. The fights are very detailed, occasionally confusing (this could very well be due to the translation though), with every person and beast having very unique skills and fighting styles.

It’s a very solid start to the beginning of a long, long journey (43 volumes to go).

Note, my review is for the whole series and will contain spoilers.

This was my first Chinese light novel series and was recommended to me by a friend. He described it as the LoTR of Chinese light novels, so that immediately piqued my attention. I read the English translations, which at multiple points were quite cringe-y and often seemed to skip whole lines or paragraphs, but I was quite drawn into the story and the characters and tried to ignore the errors as much as I could.

I don't know how many hours I spent reading this but it was a lot. I would read for 4-5 hours per day for days at a time, and it still took me forever to finish. I was really into it for most of the series, but once Tang Sang hit god level near the end, I thought the author took things a little too far and Tang San was really too OP. Up till that point, I loved reading about how he cleverly used his brains to control every single battle.

I'm a HUGE fan of any story set in a school setting, so the first arc of the book where Tang San and Xiao Wu attended the local spirit academy and then later went on to become students of Shrek Academy were my favorite parts of the book. I really enjoyed reading about the camaraderie between all 7 members of the Shrek Seven Devils and watching them tease each other. It's great they supported each other so much, to the point where everyone had complete faith in anything Tang San said, and Oscar and Rong Rong were okay with sacrificing their powers if necessary in order to revive him. Now that's brotherhood and friendship at its best!

The spirit competition between all the spirit master academies was really fun to read as well. Like I mentioned, one of my favorite parts of the whole series was watching Tang Sang control the whole battle from start to end, and the spirit hall battles were some really great examples of that, especially their fight against Hu Liena and the Spirit Hall team in the finals.

Finally finding out the truth behind Tang San's family history was a relief as well, as they had been teasing the reader with that for the longest time. I felt so bad for everything that his father, Tang Hao, had to go through. He just wanted to live his life with his wife and son, but the Spirit Hall had to ruthlessly take that all away from him. It didn't even occur to me Tang Sang would be able to help speed up his mother's cultivation speed, but of course he stepped in with his amazing talents and was able to re-unite the whole family again. That was a really touching scene, when both he and Xiao Wu were there to witness his mother transforming into human form again.

I was curious how the author was going to expand the world after the devils graduated from Shrek Academy. I had a feeling it was going to involve conflict against Spirit Hall, but I had no idea Bibi Dong, the Supreme Pontiff, would go so far as to form the Spirit Empire and have the guts to go up against the Heaven Dou and Star Luo empires. To accomplish all that in just the brief 5 years Tang Sang and co were off training and getting stronger on Sea God Island is incredible.

Tang San was so focused on his Tang Sect hidden weapons, but with how strong he was for his age and among his peers, I kept on wondering when they would ever come into play. I see the author was leading up to the big fights against Spirit Hall spirit masters near the end, I can't believe the top ranked hidden weapons were enough to severely injure something with god-level powers.

Each time Tang San got stronger and I was like, okay there's no way anyone can be his match, he would meet enemies or opponents who were stronger than him. Even when he kept getting more 100,000 year rings and spirit bones and his external Eight Spider Lances kept evolving, I thought that would be it, but nope. When I finally thought he wouldn't have any peers after fully becoming the Sea God, the author still had him in a tough spot by fighting Bibidong and Qian Renxue, two other gods, in a 2v1 fight. The poor guy really can't catch a break!

I absolutely loved the world building. It was one of my favorite parts of the book, along with Tang San's character. The whole idea of everyone having an innate spirit and spirit levels ranging from 0-100 that can increase based on your innate potential and cultivation progress was great. With every 10 levels, you can also hunt a spirit animal or plant with the appropriate level and absorb that to get an ability related to the spirit. Even though near the end the powers had become too OP, watching each of the Shrek Seven Devils slowly increase in strength and gain the optimal configuration of spirit rings and spirit abilities under Grandmaster's guidance made the series fun.

So why only 4 stars? Tang San and some other characters do get a little bit OP at the end, to the point where the battles were hard to follow. Also, the ending was quite abrupt and I didn't like how the author randomly threw in a sob story for Bibi Dong in the very last chapter. I felt really bad for her, especially how she was forcibly taken away from the man she loved and then raped by the previous pontiff, but that little tidbit wasn't enough to change my mind about her. If she really hated Spirit Hall that much, then why did she do so much to help advance it? Was she just that ambitious and hungry for power?

Anyways I really enjoyed the series and can totally see myself coming back to it in the future if I really wanted to immerse myself in a long series again.

A generic overview rating since unfortunately this is a retrospective review (about a year on since I actually read the story!).

Alhamdulillah a lovely story suggestion provided by my father and a story I've now gone by referring to as doludoludoludolu (rather fun to say).

I love the power system in this book and the growing themes of love and family and honour genuinely included all the elements that got me into reading in the first place - perhaps my first Wuxia in a while (unless I read Martial world first - I think this was first tho!) and so addictive as they always seem to be.

Definitely on the re-read list and love the trial saga and the stakes of the fight felt very very vivid, also enjoy the fact that the common ending trope of losing all their powers/cultivation was approached in a more tasteful manner that boosted other side characters to being a meaningful cast.

Also really enjoy that it's one main love interest as opposed to the harem behaviour typically common 😭🤣 Felt more invested than the chop and change romance.

This is the first five volumes of this series on novels and it was very good. It starts off with the main character breaking the rules of his clan and ending his life with the wish of being reborn again. Spoiler his wish comes true and he is reborn on a world where people have the ability to use spirit powers...only have a spirit power is just the start to being a true spirit master. Overall it was great i loved the characters and the growth that they showed; Tang San is a interesting main character with a nice feel to him. I would recommend this novel series to anyone
