Another book from my gilded youth, primarily used as a prop to appear esoteric and foppish at work. In as much as you can appear esoteric and foppish wearing a lurid purple blazer, sat on a till in Terry Tescos scanning beans.

The collection belonged to my uncle, who is a bit ace (artists, Peak District warden, friend of Hawkwind) so I've kept it - and I'm glad I did.

I always liked Charles Causley, but age has brought a new appreciation of the others in the collection; the barely-contained violence of Ted Hughes, the pastoral whimsy of Laurie Lee and the likes of Alan Ross, RS Thomas and John Betjeman. James Kirkup remains pretentiously wanky though, so maybe skip him.

Poems by John Betjeman, Charles Causley, Patrick Dickinson, Clifford Dyment, Ted Hughes, James Kirkup, Laurie Lee, Norman Nicholson, Alan Ross and R S Thomas appear in their own sections throughout this collection.

A thoroughly wide-ranging collection of 147 poems from these poets and a different amount by each.

Well worth a read for the chance to read some 'important, but not always appreciated' poetic works of these 10 poets of the 19th, then the beginning of the 20th, centuries.
