"War did not revolutionise the British, but it radicalized them. The supreme crises of Dunkirk & the Battle of Britain induced a new sense of tribal solidarity, triumphantly put to the test in the Blitz on London & other major cities"

This one is a great read to understand what Britain was before the Second World War and what it was to become as a society post the War.

This one from Paul Addison is a great socio- economic- political analysis of those years under Attlee post the war - how the same would effect British Society till date, the high point of the policies and their own falling which ultimately led to the dismissal of the Labour Govt. in 1951. But then those 5 years have visible effects on the British even till date.

If you really want to learn how or why things like the NHS came into existence in England post the war, do read this.
