Exclusive CD! Brooks & Dunn's "Gotta Get Me One of Those" inside!
Musicians by trade, Slim and Howdy have each come to a figurative crossroads in their lives. As fate would have it, they meet at these crossroads, never realizing it's a turning point in their lives. Forced by circumstances to share a truck, they take to the road in pursuit of a common goal--to make it as musicians on the country music circuit. But it seems no matter where these two travel, trouble finds them. Whether it's turning the tables on a crooked card shark who takes everything they have, or fending off the raging boyfriend of that friendly gal from last night, the guys are constantly needing to outwit the world. And when their friend and boss Jodie Lee disappears, their resourcefulness will truly be tested. Each of the guys has his theory, but they'll need to work together to get to their friend before time runs out.
Slim and Howdy are two cowboys searching for Fame and Fortune. Upon meeting up, trouble follows them everywhere they go. When their old friend and colleague Jodie is captured by Mexican terrorists, the two desperados rise to the occasion searching for her and shooting whoever gets in their way. Will they succeed? Read on and find out for yourself.
This was a pretty good read and debut novel from the Country Duo Brooks and Dunn. If you like country westerns with the odd couple of the west, be sure to check this book out. It is available at your local library and wherever books are sold.
Most people probably won’t enjoy this book. But beings that I am an avid Brooks and Dunn fan, I absolutely loved it.
The character Slim is based on Ronnie Dunn and the character Howdy is based on Kix Brooks. The two guys meet up and go on many adventures as they travel the Texas honky-took scene.
DNF. When I started this book I read a 5-star review saying you probably had to be a fan of Brooks & Dunn to like this book. If you are a fan of books about 2 singing drifters wandering around, picking up singing gigs in bars, picking up women, getting into fights, and drinking...oh, and gambling, almost forgot that, you'll love this book. But I'm not and I didn't.
I stumbled across this book while browsing the shelves one afternoon. I had no idea Brooks and Dunn, the most award winning duo in Country music, had written a book. Slim and Howdy are two characters that first appeared in the liner notes of Brooks and Dunn CDs “to give listeners something to stare at while they listened to the music.” This full-length adventure explains how the two characters met and puts them through a short rode trip through Texas, where they play a couple of honky-tonks (they each play their own music while the other watches the entrance,) meet up with old friends, make new ones, foil a drug smuggling plan, and rescue a kidnapped friend. Is this great literature? No. Is it a fun read? Absolutely. Brooks and Dunn fans will spot occasional references to their music and get to know a little more about the duo’s alter egos.
I didn't really have too many expectations when I started reading this. I just wanted to see what kind a book Brooks & Dunn could putt together. I have to admit that I was pretty surprised and it was actually somewhat entertaining. It was interesting how they would use some of the lyrics from their songs in the dialog and descriptions. Overall, it was a pretty good read but they do better at singing than writing.
This is one of my $1 finds at Job LOT. It is a novel by Brooks & Dunn. I guess we know what they have been doing between shows all these years. It was actually pretty entertaining. The two main characters were two guys that were described a lot like Brooks and Dunn! So it certainly was easy to picture them! I wouldn't be surprised if after their retirement from the road, they didnt make a "movie of the week" for TNN! Worth my $1.
I found this book at a flea market for a couple of bucks. I wasn't really expecting much from it, but being a fan of Brooks & Dunn, I thought I'd give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised. Don't get me wrong, it will never become one of those "timeless classics", but it really was a fun read. It had its funny moments as well as action and mystery. Even though it was a bit predictable, it had some surprising twists as well. All together, it was a fast, fun read.
I saw this book at the library and after reading the book’s description, I knew it would be entertaining. I wasn’t disappointed.
It’s an outrageous story of two men traveling together and all the wild adventures they get into! As I was reading it, it just seemed to get crazier and crazier – what crazy scrapes Slim and Howdy find themselves in!
I love Bill Fitzhugh's writing, so even though I'm not a country western music fan I read this and enjoyed it. Certainly anyone who likes country will love it. Brooks and Dunn co-wrote it with Fitzhugh. It's the story of two drifting country singers and the dangers and adventures they get themselves into. Definitely a good read.
I could imagine these two doing what was done, so typical with their reactions and what they got in to. I laughed at some of the reactions to what happened to them. A cute look at friendships and how they are formed. Does have some language and a bit of talking about one night stands, nothing graphic. It is pretty mild cmpared to what some authors think is necessary.
Don't ask me why I read this in the first place, but it was pleasant and inoffensive. I wouldn't know Brooks and Dunn's music if I heard it, but I will always feel grateful because of the two grills we won because of them. :-)
Silly, funny, raunchy, but entertaining little Texas mystery. Could have used fewer double ententres (used several times, so we'd really GET it), but I probably will read the sequel if they write one. Nice to find a CD as a bonus!
This was an ok book. It moved along kind of slow at times. I did get the whole Brooks and Dunn characters. It also incorporated some of their songs into the chapters. It moved along better toward the end. I gave it 3 stars.
Interesting book yet lacks a voice which can be seen due to the style of writing. There are also issues concerning references which are a little dated to get. A little slow at some points the story moves in several directions yet a good story all in all
A surprizingly enjoyable read, with some moments of genuine laughing-out-loud humour. A good light read for when you want something fun, quick and not requiring too much brain.
This book was co writen by Ronnie Dunn and Kix Brooks and is very funny. I found it at the dollar store and just bought it for fun! I really liked it, and have recommended it to friends and family!
Fun, refreshing Western style novel written by country music legends. Not the type of book that knocks your socks off and keeps you up thinking at night, but it's still an enjoyable read!
This is a very funny book. It has a lot of their songs (either phrases or titles) mentioned in the book. It also shows the humor between the two main characters (as well as the other characters).
Took a long time to actually read it but I'm glad I finally did. Not very well written but a really good story. Couldn't put it down, read it in two days.
