Her father Manish Ghatak was a well-known poet and novelist of the Kallol era, who used the pseudonym Jubanashwa. Mahasweta's mother Dharitri Devi was also a writer and a social worker.
She joined the Rabindranath Tagore-founded Vishvabharati University in Santiniketan and completed a B.A. (Hons) in English, and then finished an M.A. in English at Calcutta University as well. She later married renowned playwright Bijon Bhattacharya who was one of the founding fathers of the IPTA movement. She got divorced from Bijon Bhattacharya in 1959.
In 1964, she began teaching at Bijoygarh College (an affiliated college of the University of Calcutta system). During those days, Bijoygarh College was an institution for working class women students. During that period she also worked as a journalist and as a creative writer. Recently, she is more famous for her work related to the study of the Lodhas and Shabars, the tribal communities of West Bengal, women and dalits. She is also an activist who is dedicated to the struggles of tribal people in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. In her elaborate Bengali fiction, she often depicts the brutal oppression of tribal peoples and the untouchables by potent, authoritarian upper-caste landlords, lenders, and venal government officials.

My first book by Devi. I'm deeply impressed by the style - incantatory, lyrical, but not verbose. And never letting the narrative thread slip. And the quiet yet pointed social critique, levelled at the mores of 12th century Bengal but still relevant in our modern, misogynistic, regressive India. A short novella, but vivid and profound.
Credit is due to Pinaki Bhattacharya for the translation and Naveen Kishore for a wonderful introductory interview where Devi delves into how language preserves bits of folklore and social history that form the kernels of her stories.

This is not a big read but I still took a week to read it and put aside everything else while I was on to it.
Why? Because such books deserve undivided, ceremonious attention. Such books need to be read widely, applauded and referred. Such books can change the way Indians read and will bring in respect for geniuses such as Mahashweta Devi.
It is an extremely potent story of Romtha, the prisoner picked by a Baidhya for medicinal purposes (boiling in oil) and experimentations. It is about his relationship with a city ‘whore’ and about how migration to cities impacts naive village-folks. It is about this and much more and still leaves a lot unsaid. Strongly recommended.

This is the first book (that was not for children) by Mahasweta Devi that I have read and my lord was it sublime. It is a tiny book but it took me a while to finish not because it was hard to read but because I did not want to stop, every word was beautiful. I cant even imagine how reading the original Bengali would be. I can't wait to read everything she has written.
Apologies for the fawning review.

This one took me SO long to finish, and I already know it’ll take me even longer to get over it. Devi basically tells the story of a cruel historical practice in a way that just sits heavy in your chest afterwards. Sharan as a character honestly never really did justice to anyone in his life, but somehow I still felt bad for him because life never did justice to him either.
One thing I’ll definitely take away from this book is Devi talking about how humans create abnormalities in society by not letting nature do its own thing, and somehow that connects to the making of dictators too. Another thing that stayed in my head was the way the capital was described like this giant demon that just consumes everything around it (I literally have a whole theory on this part).
And honestly, Romtha is one of those books where you need to feel everything to truly understand the characters. The cast was pretty limited, but every character had their own story that needed proper understanding, not just surface-level reading.

It's hard to believe this is a translation... makes me really sad I can't read it in the original Bengali. It's more of a novel-sized poem. Staggeringly beautiful despite its being a story about a disgusting and inhumane practice. Mahasweta Devi is a real weirdo. I can't wait to find more of her work.
