Uncertain Magic

Rate this book
Two ordinary children have an extraordinary adventure when they find themselves transported to a world where magic is real, and "they" are supposed to be the heroes. In the tradition of fantasy classics such as "The Narnia Chronicles," and the books of Edward Eager and Lloyd Alexander, "Uncertain Magic" is a fantasy story of sword and sorcery. It is set in Pandium, a frozen, tree-covered island in the midst of a vast ocean. In Pandium, magic is an art that can be mastered by those who are gifted and trained.

The story involves four children. Nat and Katie are siblings, aged ten and twelve, who live in the Florida Keys. Suddenly thrust into a world they don't understand, they have to adapt quickly to their new reality, and learn to work together.

Kyp and Edwin live in Pandium, where Edwin is the Crown Prince and will become King on his upcoming eleventh birthday. Kyp is the apprentice to the Royal Wizard, but is more slave than apprentice. In spite of their vastly different circumstances, they are best friends.

The trouble begins when Kyp overhears the wizard plotting to kill Edwin. He warns the prince, and together they hatch a desperate plan to use one of Krisgen's spell books, and Kyp's uncertain knowledge of magic, to summon an enchanted hero who can defeat the conspirators. The spell doesn't go as planned, and instead of a fierce, magical warrior, they conjure Nat and Katie, two very surprised and unwarrior-like children.

Now trapped in Pandium, Nat and Katie have to work with Kyp and Edwin to defeat the wizard. Only when Edwin is safe can they hope to return home.

Four star read for young readers--4th to 6th grade.

Engaging story about a young Prince and the heroes he summons to help save him from his wicked uncle and an evil magician. The summoning spell goes a little awry due to some substitute spell ingredients, but the heroes are brave and clever and the bad guys are overthrown.
