When Katie O’Callaghan left Ireland in search of a better life in America, she never dreamed that she'd end up having to flee Boston and head West less than a year later. But after suffering at the hands of her greedy Uncle, she is forced to take the only way out she can ... marry a stranger out west.
Daniel Sullivan is in need of a wife if he wants the bank to lend him money for his new business. Too bad the only girl he's interested in - one he met during a train robbery - is already taken. Katie is determined to honour her promise to marry her fiancé despite losing her heart to Daniel.
Rachel Wesson was born in Kilkenny, Ireland but considers herself to be from the capital, Dublin as that's where she spent most of her life. Her dad brought Rachel and her two sisters out every Saturday to give their mother a break. He took them to the library and for ice-cream after. It took a long time for her sisters to forgive her for the hours she spent choosing her books! She grew up driving everyone nuts asking them questions about what they did during the War or what side they were on in the 1916 rising etc. Finally her Granny told her to write her stories down so people would get the pleasure of reading them. In fact what Granny meant was everyone would get some peace while Rachel was busy writing! When not writing, or annoying relatives, Rachel was reading. Her report cards from school commented on her love of reading especially when she should have been learning. Seems you can't read Great Expectations in Maths. After a doomed love affair and an unpleasant bank raid during which she defended herself with a tea tray, she headed to London for a couple of years. (There is a reason she doesn't write romance!). She never intended staying but a chance meeting with the man of her dreams put paid to any return to Ireland. Having spent most of her career in the City, she decided something was missing. Working in the City is great but it's a young person's dream. Having three children you never see isn't good for anyone. So she packed in the job and started writing. Thanks to her amazing readers, that writing turned into a career far more exciting and rewarding than any other. Rachel lives in Surrey with her husband and three children, two boys and a girl. When not reading, writing or watching films for "research" purposes, Rachel likes to hang out with her family. She also travels regularly back home - in fact she should have shares in BA and Aerlingus.
From the moment, I started reading this book I was drawn in. An Irish family leaves Ireland to find their way in America. Leaving their Father behind with the grave of their mother, the two young girls seek to start over again. Picked up on the American shores by her cruel Uncle, Katie quickly discovers this is not what her dreams are made of. Oh the woes of the immigrant. What is one to do when given the choice of servitude to cruel taskmasters or becoming a mail order bride to a possibly worse fate? Pick up this romance book with a taste or Ireland to find out! This is a sweet romance about the suffering of immigration and the fortitude of the desolate to make America a better place! I truly loved this story and the unexpected twist with her engagement! I think this book will appeal to many readers! I recommend this book to those who enjoy historical fiction, historical romance, mail order brides, western romance, and Christian romance.
I don’t even know what I just read so sorry. The plot wasn’t clear until about 30% in, when the MMC was finally introduced. Before then, it seemed Mosbil (forgotten his name) was the MC. And while I thought it would be a redemption arc kind of thing, I was not very hopeful in how the author portrayed him. So that was a long time thinking the hero was a mindless vagrant.
I honestly also think the story could’ve started with Katie’s train ride to be a mail order bride. The whole bit with arriving in America and living/working for her uncle took too much page time without being necessary. They could’ve been summarized as an off-page backstory instead and it would’ve giving better pacing.
I wanted to like Katie. She went through a lot and with more care, it would’ve been interesting and impactful. Here, everything seemed to move too shallowly and I never felt grounded in the story. I did like how hardworking she and Ellen were. I liked many of the people they got to meet. And I liked Clover Springs.
Daniel wasn’t a well developed character, and while there had been strong potential for love following their first meeting, it wasn’t really explored so it felt jarring how they suddenly fell in love.
There were also some modern terminology used, and times when something would be written in capital letter and later in small letters. (These didn’t really affect my reading though.) it was also pretty weird that Katie prayed to her late mother..
So yeah. It wasn’t the best reading experience for me. I wanted to give it props for keeping me reading still. But about 75% in, I started to skip to the end. It just wasn’t for me, I guess!
I absolutely loved this book!! I was captivated from the first page. A clean mail order bride story with twists and turns. I can't wait to read more from Ms Wesson. :)
The story gripped me from the beginning. It's a wonderful story a story of Hope, of love and new life. I would read it again because I'm sure there's something I've missed in the first reading. How can I say enough about this book. I loved it!
Sometimes, what we have in our minds for our lives isn't what God has in mind. And injustice on a badly divided planet full of sinful people is often difficult, if not impossible, to escape. Two sisters from Ireland have already had more injustice than most people see in a lifetime. A village works together to drain bogs for pasture. Their English overlords arrest 2 young men, one of then the girls' brother, for rebellion, even though the brother had an alibi. For "harboring rebels," the villagers were turned out of their homes - by armed soldiers - and their village razed to make a bigger pasture for the lord's stock. Their mother died during the eviction, and their father's brother offered to send fare for the 2 girls, Katie, 17, and her younger sister Ellen, 12. Ellen tends to be sickly, but Katie believes with adequate food, Ellen will grow stronger. Forced to live for the months the sea voyage took, in the hold with filthy straw, no heat, inadequate food, and no way to wash, disease took many and those were buried at sea...including the parents and baby sister of 2 girls, similar in age to Katie and Ellen. When Katie and Ellen meet their uncle, they note the physical resemblance to their dad is the only resemblance. Richly dressed, he is cruel, and he remarks unkindly on their appearance and cleanliness...even though he had arrived the same way, he has forgotten. His wife is equally cruel, and their friend, the cook, takes them under her wing, and helps Katie get away to be a mail order bride. A young man has done ranch work as a cowboy, but he doesn't care for it. He's been saving to earn money to buy a business, the town's store, whose owner wants to retire and go back east. He still needs a loan, but the stipulation is that he marry within the month. He is on the way back from his bank trip when the train is robbed. He jad just noticed the 2 girls when he woke from a nap. He has been told he needs to get married to get the loan - wothin a month. Here he had been thinkimg marriage was the last thing on his hos mind but he feels an instant connection to the fiery Irish older sister. The problem? She's engaged to someone else. Since the train is delayed becaise of damage to the front end from the roadblock of huge boulders, they can go no further. She sends a telegram t0 jer fiance aboit the delay, and the young man takes the girls to his mother's boarding house. The fiance takes his time responding. And soon, the older sister realizes her own attraction to this young man....but she has made a promise, and is not in the habit of breaking promises. There are some difficult moments and a dangerous one, and I wipl leave it to the reader to find out all the details I skimmed over or omitted, up to the end. This is a fairly typical patteen for maol order bride books, but jas some enjoyable twists, a nasty character in the town, & the usual assortment otherwise.
4.5 STARS for this well written attention grabbing storyline of Irish Immigrants when their boat first lands in Boston, two sets of sisters. In the beginning we learn about what happens to both sets; but Book 1 is primarily about the two who had come to live with their Uncle. They expected to live as beloved relatives because that is what their Father had thought and told them so; however, they lived as lowly servants who did not get paid, time off, and got beat if they spoke anything that their Uncle or Aunt didn't like. Katie answered a Mail Order Bride letter and took her younger ( not old enough to marry, but could do chores & go to school) sister and ran off to the west and while traveling met her real true love, but she had already given her word to marry, they were in a train robbery, a railroad man was killed and there was a time delay in getting to her Mr Mail Order Man. In the meantime, she finds out her one true love needs to get married and the amount of people that would be unhappy if he doesn't get a loan all based on that is a subplot in itself that I loved. For the most part the characters are great except for the prejudice old busy body that gossips in town. I read Book 1 then I saw there were several plus more books and I can't help wondering who in that town gets a story. My only disappointed is the one she was on he way to marry, nobody figured out his brother was cruel to him and he was afraid to go against him so should have maybe give him way less time. Well, after all he did figure out by himself that it had been a mean idea to bring her out to their (his brother 's ranch) anyway, said he was sorry and did offer to marry her so she would not feel alone. There maybe he should get a book when he gets out because he will need a helper for sure WARNING: 16 &Up SEXUAL CONTENT; Only Kisses
Katie O'Callaghan and her younger sister Ellen leave Ireland after their home is burned down and their mother's death. They are coming to America for a better future. They are met by their father's brother, but he turns out to be a disappointment. Katie seeks a mail-order bride contract and accepts a rancher's contract.
On the train west to Colorado, Katie is attracted to Daniel Sullivan, who is also on the train. He is also attracted to her. They met as the train is being robbed by outlaws. Katie notices a birthmark on one of them.
The train is damaged, so they have to stay in Clover Springs, Colorado. Daniel carries them to his mother's boarding house. When his mother becomes ill, Katie and Ellen take over the running of the boarding house.
Daniel needs a wife for his bank loan requirement in order to buy the merchandise store in Clover Springs. He feels lucky to find Katie, a woman he loves. Yet, she is bound to her contract.
I really wanted to like this book. Wesson shows great promise as a writer!! I just take issue with some of the historical inaccuracies in this book. I think a historian should have given an early draft a read and there should have also been a sentivitiy reader.
A few of the concerns I had: - "But being poor in Ireland isn't different to being poor in America. You don't have rights." [the story then goes on to talk about rich people being evil]. Don't get me wrong, being poor is never easy. There's a lot of systemic oppression to keep people in poverty. Just the phrasing of this is not exactly right. I mean, people did have rights, even the poor. - "China George" need I say more there... well it turns out I might. It plays into some pretty bad stereotyping to also make him a bad cook. - No Irish accents in Boston? There totally would have been at this time
In the end, I would like to give her book a higher rating. Again, Wesson is a skilled writer. Great story, great plot. This could have just used a few more edits from a third party to make it even more polished.
This was a very well written book by Rachel Wesson and I enjoyed reading it. Ireland, coming to America, two sisters, horrible aunt and uncle, mail order bride taking younger sister with her, train robbery, a death, wrecked train, a young man, bank, needing marriage, taken in by boarding house owner, sending a telegram, helping out, going to church, being snubbed, checking for reply, to be married, starting to have feelings for another. Will she get married? Will the train robbers be caught? Will she leave town? Will she have a happy ever after? I would recommend this book to everyone. I really liked this book a lot and I hope you will buy it and enjoy it as much as I did. Enjoy.
4 stars Well done, clean historical romance. This illuminates the plight of Irish immigrants, young unaccompanied women, arriving in the States. Katie and her little sister are sent to an uncle in Boston, when staying in Ireland is not possible. The uncle and especially his wife, are cruel and treat them like servants. Katie conspires to be a mail order bride to escape that life. Her train west is robbed, but she meets a handsome and enchanting man, Daniel. Daniel takes the girls to his mother, who runs a boarding house in Clear Creek. Katie and Daniel fall in love, most chastely. The man who is to be her husband, turns out to be not a good man. His brother even worse. Good and quickly read story. There are others in the series.

This was yet another recommendation that was given to me. This book is about Katie who is just a child really who just crossed the ocean from Ireland. Katie has lost most of her family members and is finally with family but they turn out to be horrible people. So of course Katie looks for a way out and a mail order bride becomes the way. This was hard for me to enjoy because Katie just comes across as a very young kid. It was hard to fall in love the story when I felt like I was reading about a girl way too young to be getting married.
A quick read but entertaining. It is a little predictable but it encompasses 2 sisters fleeing Ireland due to the English taking over and their Mam that has passed because of this. They board a ship to Boston where their Uncle(their father’s brother has sponsored them. But to only be a maid for help and not being treated well for a year. The oldest Katie answers a Mail Bride advertisement. Katie takes her sister by paying her way to Colorado. It is not at all what they envisioned. God has ways to putting the right people in their path.
A wonderful heartfelt story Katie and her sister irish immigrants travelling from sadness to sadness till they decide to go west. I was captivated with this story it pulls you in, the town and the characters of Clover Springs is amazing as you read you feel like your there Rachel Weston books just hit that spot a clean romance that just picks you up I can't wait to read more
This well-written, entertaining and clean Western Romantic tale gives you a unique view of becoming a Mail Order bride. The perspective of arriving in Boston from Ireland with a little sister in tow lets us see a realistic experience that many young women faced in the 19th century.
If you like stories about Western Mail Order brides with a different twist on the genre, you must read this book!!!
I would give this book a 3.75, not a true 4. I liked the characterization of Katie O'Callaghan and Daniel Sullivan. However, until I figured out the author's purpose, I was confused about that of Montis Cassidy, after all, it is chapter 12 before Daniel makes an appearance. Although there is the occasional typo, the book is relatively clean of errors. There are 39 chapters, but most are only a few pages in length.
When her uncle's home for herself and her younger sister is only a place of backtracking work, a young immigrate decides to become a mail-order bride. A train robbery, a robber, a reluctant groom, and not enough money leads to her finding work to just make do until her intended makes the young woman a bride.
Will she marry the reluctant groom? Or will she marry a man she has come to love?
This sweet and clean mail-order bride western was the perfect length for a bedtime read. After losing her parents in the crossing, Irish lass Katie looks for an alternative from her cruel uncle and wife for her and her younger sister. However nothing goes as plan in her trip westward that ultimately turns into a blessing in disguise for her. Will keep you captivated from beginning to end for those who enjoy this genre.
I enjoyed this book very much. It’s a very sweet story that took my mind off worries. I think it’s suitable for girls 12 and older. The characters are good people, along with one or two with way too much money and the cruel attitudes that can come from that. I hope someone makes this into a miniseries along the lines of the Little House books. I didn’t give 5 stars because the characters were slightly two-dimensional.
This was a sweet, fun read. I really love the mail order bride books and this one was a great book to read, I look forward to reading Mary's book and Ellen's book . The characters in this book for fun and I felt a real connection with them. The storyline was wonderful I read the whole book in one sitting.
I've become addicted to mail order bride books and the Clover Springs set is an exceptional set. There are more surprises in these stories than you will usually find so they are truly fun to follow. Plus you start with Katie then her friends follow her to Clover Springs and every couple is very different. Great set.
Can't imagine going through so much as a young woman. Poor Katie had to leave her home and father after losing her mother. Taking her young sister and traveling to America was hard. An Uncle and aunt taking them in sounded like a blessing. Katie is brave and strong. Wait till you see all the twists and turns.
I really enjoyed this book and didn't want to put it down. My heart went out to Katie and all she went through. She was amazing with how she kept going out of love for her sister. I loved all the different people she meets on the way and how unknowingly she leaves an impression on them.
Very good reading for us gals!! It makes me remember a lot of romantic moments in my younger days...I am now 71 but still enjoyed reading this...however, I recommend it for younger ladies who will experience the romance in their future...I really enjoy reading mail-order bride novels.. Once again, good reading!
First time I've read a book by Rachel Wesson and was pleasantly surprised. Expertly crafted with a good storyline and amazing characters. She made us feel the heartbreaking loss of her family and home, as well as the responsibility of keeping Ellen safe. Katie met Daniel on the train and it was love at first sight
Katie and her sister Ellen were coming from Ireland to America to live a better life. Most of their family had died and they were to live with their Uncle and Aunt whom they had never met. That turned out to be as bad as Ireland so Katie turned to being a Mail Order Bride. Things don't always turn out the way you plan.
3 1/2 stars rounded up. Enjoyed it though I thought it drug a bit. Irish girl escapes Ireland only to land in the hands of an abusive uncle. Decides only way out is to be a mail order bride and sets off with her sister to Clover Springs. Along the way there is a bank robbery and she meets someone but is obligated to her order .
Enjoyed this book This book was a quick read & kept my interest. I liked the characters. young Katie was strong Irish, & beautiful. She & her young sister were treated as servants in h their uncles home! She answer an ad for mail order bride! The story plot has some twists & kept me interested! I would like to read other book in this series!
