A penalty is given in a football match. One simple decision that brings together the stories of a substitute goalkeeper, an ageing midfielder, two friends watching in the stands, a young boy, the hidden world of transfer dealings and a manager's wife.
Six-a-Side is a collection of (very) short stories about the drama of the football and its impact on those involved.
I'm not a football fan, but these short and snappy tales revolving around a penalty are actually pure human. Different perspectives of the same moment in time, from both on and off the pitch. Each pulls you in, despite their very short length. You care about each character. That's a great feat in only around 500 words each, demonstrating the skill of the author.
Steven Kedie does Six-A-Side, One Game, Six Perspectives. "A Collection of Very Short Stories" is a great collection that I sunk my teeth into. A really clever idea that worked.
Brought me back to being a youngster and in my case, the love I felt for my home team, the Los Angeles Dodgers. I remember being that little kid. Not knowing what to expect but excited just the same. Wearing my store bought uniform and feeling pretty special. This book is not just about the love of the sport but it is shared with a human touch that is both charming and endearing. These stories all took me in and spoke to me.
