In this alternate timeline, Russia conquered all of Europe in World War II. Now, America itself is on the verge of being conquered, too. A team of scientists have developed the technology to send a modern Army unit back in time to a critical battle in World War II. If they can stop the Russians there, it is hoped, Europe will be saved and the Russians will never be in a position to conquer the United States. The time jump is successful and battle is engaged between modern American tanks, artillery, helicopters, and infantry against Russia’s World War II weapons at the battle of Kursk.
Those who survive the war return to an America that is very different than the one they left. Yet some things are disturbingly the same.
Not so good. I'm usually a big fan of alternate history and am pretty tolerant of a few illogical mistakes, but this was a waste of time. The character development was a continuous repetition of stereotyping and boring philosophical demonizing. Over 60% of the story was done before anything notable happens, not exactly fast paced. There is one highly improbable love affair. The whole purpose of 'the mission' was a bit lost, but the action scenes were at least a break from the tedium of the dialogue. Actually, the disposition of the fighting force was the only part that made any logical sense, although it was a bit of a shock. However, any redeeming influence was negated by another incredulous set of scenes, another series of boring philosophical dialogues, and a cutesy plot twist.
This was a chance for the author to display all the cliches associated with the ultra right conservative philosophy. The dangers of Communism, loss of fundamental Christian belief in society, and the dangers of blind loyalty to the state are all sounding boards for this badly written attempt to advance a poorly developed storyline. All of these are important issues that should be discussed rationally, and literature has a place in the discussion. However, this book widely missed the mark in combining these important issues with a poorly written adventure tale. Pass it by, you've got better things to do with your time.
An alternative history with enough sermonising that this book would fit right in at a Christian book store. The author mixes in enough conservative dogma to sell in a package deal with any book by Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity or Bill O'Reilly what had real promise or potential as alternative military fiction similar to the stories of Harry Turtledove was distracted by an unnecessary, farfetched love story woven in with the dual threads of God For Dummy's and evangelical right wing politics. I expected more from a West point graduate author. The writing style seems to be n with grade level that makes for an easy read that may appeal to the young readers. As a kindel download under $4, I don't feel cheated for value. Enjoy the read for the story it presents. I would like to see this writer mature and find his true writers voice. I'll be following his future work and wish him the best.
Some of the battle scenes and story line were good and I had high hopes, but the author is a bit too preachy and trump like.for.my.taste. he should focus less.on.the bible.banging and right wing nut job.stuff and focus more on telling a.Great alt history story. I'd love to.see more.of.this.genre from a
Semper Fi. Let's see one from the Marines in the future, but without the bible.banging. and religious propaganda this author loves
