One of my twitter peeps recommended this. It's a collection of pre-code horror tales in the vein of EC, all with a love theme, or as close to a love theme as you can get in pre-code horror.
All of the tales are structured like EC tales with a twist ending. Some of them work really well. Some barely work but are still fun. It's obvious they're trying to copy the EC style. For the most part, the art isn't quite as good, although I noticed Nick Cardy's name on one of the stories. One advantage these stories have over their EC counterparts is that Al Feldstein isn't choking up the available space with huge word balloons and caption boxes. The pages are scans from old comics so they can get muddy at times, although not nearly as bad as some POD books I've picked up recently.
The stories cover a wide range of love gone wrong stories: marrying a vampire, marrying an old man that turns out to be something else, marrying a witch, marrying a crab, marrying a mermaid, etc.
Despite all the things I dinged it on, I had a lot of fun with this. Four out out of five stars.
In the past few months I've really enjoyed going back through old offbeat horror comics. In the course of reading I've discovered my new favorite comics publisher: Yoe Books. This collection of horror comics that could also easily feature in the Yoe Books' romance line (which I've come to enjoy more than the horror comics) was brilliant. I feel like Yoe's collections have probably been around forever, but I'm glad to have found them.

I had a lot of fun with this. It's great to see such compact storytelling at work, although sometimes that does require some clunky dialogue or exposition. There's a lot of charm to the artwork and the imagination on display as the writers of these tales (usually produced very quickly) tried to come up with new variants of some old horror tales. It results in some charmingly strange stories at times. Unfortunately, there's also a strong streak of misogyny here that did decrease my enjoyment. Not entirely unexpected given the time period, but still a factor for me reading it today.
this was a fun read and reminded me a lot of late afternoon stories my grandmother used to tell to coax me into taking a nap. the stories are simple, the art and the dialogue takes you back through time and are enough to hold your attention. there are two more issues so i'm looking forward into reading them when im on a break from the x-men.
Was I entertained? I love these old school short horror stories from the 50’s. They have a way about them that remind you of simpler time when horror was more in the implied than in the gore. As I read, I was actually remembering Tales From the Crypt. I was a very happy reader.
Was there drama? Each story has its own novella drama that keeps you wanting to get to the end.
Am I looking forward to the next issue? This printing will consist of 3 issues, each collecting different stories from decades ago. You bet I’m looking forward to getting through all 3 issues.
I love this series, it collects all of the old horror comics, which I remember from my childhood, and is only $4 an issue for the single issues. Great fun!
