A disappearance. A sudden death. A betrayal of the worst kind.
Ella longs for a child of her own, but a gruesome find during an adoption process deepens the cracks in her marriage. A family visit starts off a horrifying chain of events, and Ella can only hope she won’t lose the person she loves most of all.
Amanda is expecting her second child when her husband vanishes. She is tortured by thoughts of violence and loss, but nothing prepares her for the shocking conclusion to the police investigation.
And in the middle of it all, a little girl is looking for a home of her own with a ‘forever’ mummy and daddy…
Linda Huber grew up in Glasgow, Scotland, but went to work in Switzerland for a year aged twenty-two, and has lived there ever since. Her day jobs have included working as a physiotherapist in hospitals and schools for handicapped children, and teaching English in a medieval castle. Not to mention several years spent as a full-time mum to two boys, a rescue dog, and a large collection of goldfish and guinea pigs.
Linda now lives in Switzerland, in a little town on the banks of beautiful Lake Constance.
Her debut psychological suspense novel The Paradise Trees was published in 2013, and was followed by The Cold Cold Sea, The Attic Room, Chosen Child, Ward Zero, Baby Dear, and Death Wish. Linda has also had over 50 short stories and articles published, some of which can be read in The Saturday Secret, a charity collection of short (feel-good) stories.
I adore Linda Huber's writing, I have been a fan ever since reading The Cold Cold Sea and always get excited at the chance to read a new book from Linda. One of those hugely underestimated and under-noticed authors in my opinion. Well...I hope this one goes to the top of the best-seller list because it deserves to. THIS is her best work in my humble reviewers opinion. Stunning fiction.
Take two storylines and find the most disturbing way to interweave them. Linda kept me on edge though the entire book, I found myself wanting to do nothing but read it and feel sad it's finished. If this book had 800 more pages to go, I would still be happily reading it. Very clever penmanship permeates this novel. I absolutely loved it.
Psychological Thrillers are hugely popular, I find most are either mediocre or really brilliant - this falls into the really brilliant category. I am not going to go into the synopsis (but if that does not entice you then I hope my review will) but will tell you this book has everything going for it. The plot is incredibly good, original and will have you flicking the pages, pressing on your Kindle and staying up way past your bedtime, it's like every page was a cliff-hanger for me! Talk about lost in fiction!
The characters all "pop" in their own way, each one highly memorable, not all likeable and for me one or two that I fluctuated on for a million reasons. The way Linda tells this tale and makes all the pieces of the jigsaw come together is sheer entertainment. I remember the "ah-ha" moment I had about 25% into the book when I thought (and hoped) I saw where the plot was going, and it did but then it gave me so much more than I bargained on, threw up more curve balls and made me hungry for final outcomes, discoveries, revelations and answers.
It just has that "something special" about it!
Chosen Child has been added to my favourites list and will no doubt be a contender in my Top Ten of 2016 which is already hotting up and it's only January! I loved everything about this book, simply everything. For me it was faultless. So go on, add it to your to-read list, borrow it, buy it, read it! This gets a whopping 5 stars from me without a single hesitation. I am sad it's finished, the next book I pick up has a lot to live up to!
This great book is out on 15 February 2016 and can be pre-ordered at a great price:
The very first book I read by this author Linda Huber was The Cold Cold Sea, if you look at reviews on that book, you will see how many loved it. I was included in that and couldn't wait for her next book.
Here it is!
I love the colour of the cover and the details on the book cover too.
Chosen Child
This focuses around Rick and Ella. They find they are unable to have children of their own so give thoughts into adoption. Both have different outlooks on this. Rick wanted a boy. Ella was OK with that. But of course, you cannot help your emotions. We hear it said, you cannot help who you fall in love with and this proves true in Ella's case when they are both invited to meet some children at a relaxed venue with other potential hopeful Moms and Dads.
There is another story running alongside this, its Amanda and her son.
You are wondering how the two stories connect, and you are left like that for some time. Its well worth the wait. It keeps your thoughts working and you waiting in anticipation for the two to merge and become one. So well thought out by the author I thought.
This story has heartbreak, it has secrecy and it has lust. Its an unexpected secrecy that has nothing to do or connect with a child.
Have I whet your appetite yet?
Without giving spoilers, this has many dimensions that will leave you dangling in space wondering which way to lean to get on solid ground again. Unexpected surprises throughout this book I have just read and thoroughly enjoyed.
Linda Huber is one of those authors that needs to be shouted about from the rooftops, she is truly a good story teller. She needs recognition. In my humble opinion she needs her stories to be read.
I have great respect for this author, she puts her all into her books and I can feel this as I read. It flows so well, it reads superbly and although like other books it has chapters when you can mark it, put it down and pick it up later, let me say, I couldn't do that, I had to read chapter after chapter and just couldn't sleep until I had this finished.
I blame Linda Huber for the bags under my eyes.
Thanks to the author who gave me an advanced copy. I am only a reader who reviews and reads lots of books but I need to say, there are some I read for on my shelf here on goodreads [check them out] that I follow eagerly as I believe in their talent. And I am happy to read each book they produce.
This is released soon so please feel free to preorder it on Amazon.
Rick and Ella are a married couple unable to have children of their own so they decide to adopt. Rick is quite set on what he wants, a little boy. They attend an adoption party where adults mingle and play with children who are available for adoption and Ella is completely taken by a six year old girl, Soraya. How will this work out, will Rick adapt to a six year old girl rather than the little boy he wanted? How well do we really know our partners? In a second story line Amanda who has a one year old son Jaden, is having an affair and then falls pregnant to the man involved but is he ready for fatherhood? As we move forward we will see how these two story lines come together and this makes for great reading. Lies, deceit and secrets rarely lead to positive outcomes and this is definitely the case here. A well developed plot that keeps you engaged throughout, another that kept me reading at every opportunity, loved it.
Rick & Ella are childless so they decide to adopt Rick wants a boy but Ella wants a girl so when they see the child of their dreams Ella seeks adoption of Soraya straight away, she & Rick visit her often & Soraya becomes very close to Ella, meanwhile Rick's enthusiasm wains & he concentrates on work he is more married to the job than compromising with Ella.
Meanwhile Amanda who is pregnant with her second child had an affair she would rather forget she has a son Jaden & is happy with James, until James & Gareth have an argument they fight & Gareth ends up dead.
Ella & Rick are still struggling with Soraya & eventually Rick disappears with his daughter, Ella is distraught & will stop at nothing to find her?
Will Ella get the daughter back she always wanted or will Rick ruin her life forever?
I would've given this book 1 star but thought again because I actually couldn't stop reading it. I liken it to the Kardashians, for example, a fascination with the abominable. I disliked the three main characters immensely. Rick/James: Self-centered, narcissistic, vow-breaking husband. Anyone who wasn't blind could tell he was uninterested in adopting Soraya. His continued reference to "super mummy" and his wife's focus on the child rather than on him was irritating. (Being an attorney prosecuting child abuse in the dependency system, I can tell you I heard that excuse more than once when a child is abused by his or her father.) Ella: Could anyone be this incredibly naive? Her obsessiveness about having a/this child was annoying. How did she not know her husband was having an affair? Didn't she notice the drop in her husband's income when he was working only part-time? She needed alone time after just two weeks having Soraya in her home? Are you kidding me? Looks like she took up with Owen at the end? Wasn't he the married next door neighbor? Rick/Ella together: Between these two, I wouldn't let them raise a cat, and I don't even like cats. They shouldn't be raising weeds let alone a child. Amanda: What can I say about her? Despicable. At one point, she has the audacity to think "I'm not a bad person, it was all bad luck." She not only cheats on her husband but once she finds out her boyfriend is married, she injects herself into their lives and befriends the guy's wife (who's clueless). The author wants us to believe Soraya doesn't know how to use a cell phone but can use an iPad. She doesn't touch on the police investigation following the discovery of Gareth. Didn't Ella tell the police that Rick was having an affair? Didn't they check his cell phone to try and figure out who his lover was? Seems like the logical thing to do especially in light of the St. Christopher medal identified by Amanda as her husband's. Wasn't this bit of information provided to the police? Seems like the police could've put two and two together after some investigation. Like I said, and I really have no idea why I couldn't stop reading, and, thus, am giving this book 2 stars.
My heart went out to Ella throughout this book. Desperate to have a child but unable to so when her and Rick start the ball rolling in adopting six year old Soraya I was so happy for her. Sadly though I knew from the genre of the book that things wouldn’t be plain sailing.
Rick I couldn’t work out at first but the more I got to know him the more my opinion of him changed. He is very self centred and at times I could have happily given him more than a slap!
Soraya I absolutely adored. Reading of her and Ella’s relationship was so heart warming.
It’s so hard to not give anything away as the less you know about this story the better. The author certainly takes us on a twisted journey that had me on the edge of my seat as I was uncertain of how it was all going to end and it really made for some proper nail biting reading.
Chosen Child is an exhilarating read that I couldn’t put down. I was so engrossed in the novel that it didn’t take me long to devour it as it’s one of those reads that had me desperate to know the outcome. Loved it!
I absolutely love a book that writing a review is nearly impossible because of the layers the author has twisted together in a neat little "what's going to happen next" page grabber.
Life is not always what it seams no matter how hard you try to have a happy, normal marriage and life.
This book is a tale of a marriage gone wrong and how the shattered pieces can't be buried for long until the shards of deception slice open the hearts of everyone.
Marriage and family destroyed by the selfish need for passion with another woman.
Two women: Amanda, married with a fourteen month old baby, who is having an affair. Ella, married but so far unable to conceive and undergoing the rigorous checks to adopt.
When Amanda's husband, Gareth, comes home earlier than expected the resulting events change everything for both women forever.
I absolutely loved this psychological thriller as the plot rather expertly manoeuvred to affect both women when initially I couldn't see how they were going to be linked.
The strength of the story in this thriller was in the characters and I found myself sympathising with Ella as well as understanding her motivations as a character. Amanda surprised me as I didn't expect her to react in the ways she did, which made very interesting reading.
I read on to the end with eagerness to discover if both women would finally get what they truly wanted.
A special thank you to the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Talented Linda Huber returns following The Paradise Trees, The Cold Cold Sea, and The Attic Room, with another intriguing mysterious domestic psychological suspense.
THE CHOSEN CHILD A novel of desire. Obsessions. Dangerous games. Secrets. Lies. Highly charged topics of adoption and motherhood. An innocent little girl caught in the cross-fires. Do you really know your husband? A family mystery.

A game of Stranger Danger. Ella is now dealing with Rick’s oddness and Soraya’s neediness. A poor neighbor with problems. A woman’s whose husband fell into the ocean. Two families. Dangerous territory.
Rick has big problems. He can control Ella with Soraya. One problem turns into two, three . . Blackmail? A murderer. Lies. Mr. Disappearing. It is payback time in the worst of ways.
A St. Christopher’s medallion. Soraya makes a discovery. A threat. Rick is turning things around so to sabotage the adoption? He thinks he has control. However, the seams will soon be ripped apart.
Who’s blackmailing whom?
When the two world’s connect ---an explosive discovery. A visit from the parents. (this part was hilarious) .. What in bloody heck will happen next?
A kidnapping. A murderer? Things are closing in. Intense!
The child Rick had was not the chosen child. A poor little girl caught in the middle of a ruthless game. Amanda lives with uncertainty. The fear a permanent weight she carried. Ella would not allow Rick to win.
She had found her child and she would not lose her again. She would adopt as a single parent. She cannot say good-bye to the daughter she loves. The forever butterfly brooch will bond them. Will Rick take the easy way out?
Rick has Soraya. Ella has to find her. Her world is falling apart. What will happen next? All these years she has waited for a child. Rick has snatched her happiness.
Two stories collide with deadly consequences. Dark and disturbing, full of suspense and tension.
The Glasgow author, Huber is in her element as a trained physiotherapist, now in Switzerland, where she now works as teacher on the banks of Lake Constance. She knows how to spin a web of deceit, concentrating on mothers and daughters—faced with tragedies and obstacles—how they protect those they love. Highly recommend the author, and all her page-turning stories.
What a great read, Two wifes stories and the their husband entwine in this story. This is one of the best non crime, crime stories I have read in a very long time. Intriguing, compelling pick your own superlatives for this one they will fit. This would be a great Book Club read, so many points to discuss once read. I am crying out for more from Linda Huber.
This was picked as a 'read along' for one of the Facebook groups I am a member of. I enjoyed this story, it is a well written thriller with many emotional twists and turns. Having just heard what the authors next book is about when released in Autumn I'm looking forward to reading that too now!.
This is the fourth work I’ve enjoyed by Linda Huber. I was already a huge fan of her books when I recently started listening to the audiobook version of Chosen Child. I also have the Kindle version, but as the weather has been beautiful recently, I opted to swelter in my garden and allow Meriel Scholfield, the wonderful narrator of the piece, to do all the hard work rather than read the book myself. Like Linda Huber, I also work hard as an author, so my eyes deserve a rest occasionally.
Chosen Child is set in Cornwall, a part of the world I love and have often visited, so I had a clear picture of where the action was taking place. The author’s usual clarity of style meant the enthralling plot was easy for me to follow. The book skilfully dealt mainly with the subjects of adoption, adultery, and murder with sensitivity, without gratuitous sensationalism. The story is based around what happens between Amanda and her husband Gareth, Ella and her flawed husband Rick, and the enthralling, often poignant fallout from Ella’s desire to adopt a young, spirited girl called Soraya. For me to say more might spoil new readers’ enjoyment, but I urge anyone to read or listen to Chosen Child. You won’t regret it.
Wow another stunning book, loved how the storylines came together with a shocking conclusion that had so many twists that you are kept on you’re toes throughout this book!! Linda Huber has become my favourite author of 2018 so excuse me while I download another book and lock myself away for a few hours ..... please do not disturb!!!
I really like those books that keep my attention until the very last page, and that's exactly what happened with The Chosen Child. I appreciated the topic and the plot but the characters seemed somehow cold, especially Amanda. The ending disappointed me a little because to me it felt like everything that had happened made no sense at this point. That's the reason I only gave it 3 stars: it's a nice read for those who like this genre but it's nothing extraordinary.
First of all I have to say….The cover! how stunning is it! After seeing the cover that has buy me written all over it I couldn't wait to read this book. After it ending up sitting on my TBR pile for far too long and I actually wish I had read it sooner this is without a doubt an OMG book I couldn't read it fast enough it grabs you right from the start. without a doubt it is unputdownable….I freaking loved it.
In this story we meet Ella who longs for a child of her own, but a gruesome find during an adoption process deepens the cracks in her marriage. Her husband Rick has a secret, but Ella doesn’t want to know… Across town, Amanda is expecting her second child when her husband vanishes. The search begins, but nothing prepares Amanda for the shocking conclusion to the police investigation. This is one of those books that I have so much to tell you but I don't want to spoil the plot. But I will say I hated Amanda to start with but has the story develops I couldn't help but feel sorry for her. You will see for yourself what I mean when you read it.
I loved that it is set in Cornwall, it is a place that I know well from my visits on summer holidays. The author's descriptions took me right back there. But while reading Chosen Child I couldn't help but think was sitting on the beach enjoying myself on holiday with my children. While a crime is going on around me! Sounds mad but it's true…. I might never see Cornwall in the same light again LOL
This is full of twists and turns that I never saw coming I was literally on the edge of my sit with anticipation dying to know what was going to happen next.
If you're looking for a book that is gripping and full of suspense then this is the book for you. It is a must read which I highly recommend giving it 5 massive stars.
Thank you to the author for a copy in exchange for an honest review
I do realise that this author has a fair few fans on here whose opinions I respect however this really wasn't for me. I found the plot pretty basic. The characters were unremarkable and, for me, there simply was no tension. I got to 50% before I flicked to the end but it still didn't grab me.
This book gets into its cracking pace early on, in fact soon after Rick and Ella attend an adoption party to meet children who are ready to be adopted. Things aren’t straightforward though, Rick has fixed ideas on the type of child he wants to adopt; a young white boy without any health issues whereas Ella is hoping to find a child she feels that magical connection with. Adoption isn’t an easy process to go through and Ella is desperate to keep their social worker Linda on side and it doesn’t take much imagination to imagine the stress the couple are under.
Meanwhile Amanda Waters, mother to young Jaden is in a bit of dilemma, she’s bored within her marriage and yet her method of alleviating the boredom has resulted in consequences which she hadn’t bargained for… and then Amanda’s husband goes missing, setting off a chain of event which threaten everything she holds dear.
This isn’t your average psychological thriller where the terror slowly builds, I could only watch horrified as some, but in no means all, of the ramifications of decisions made early on came to pass. It is an original take on what appears to be two fairly familiar stories but the way in which the two become intertwined yet still remaining clear and separate is something I could only marvel at. This is helped by the clear and believable characters that have been created even if some of the decisions were questionable I could square them with the circumstances.
This was a gripping tale with the pace fast and furious, yet remaining clear because we get both Ella’s and Amanda’s stories with minimal navel gazing as they grapple with the way their lives are turning out. The alternate viewpoints clearly marked with the day each chapter refers to (thankfully all moving in a linear fashion) means this was one of those books where ‘one more chapter, after all they are short’ turned into marathon reads as I wanted to know what on earth was going to happen next! Both women have moral dilemmas and don’t always act with the principles you’d hope mothers would, but hey there wouldn’t be much of a story if they did! I have to admit my feelings about both women altered backwards and forwards through the book, a sign that the author had real control over them and was able to reveal or hide aspects of their personalities to suit the current chapter.
This was a hugely enjoyable read, entertaining and one where you need to buckle in and just enjoy the ride – be warned it may take you to entirely unexpected places.
Chosen Child will be published on 15 February 2016 and is available at a bargain price. I was lucky enough to receive my copy direct from the author because she knew I'd enjoyed The Cold Cold Sea.
This is the first book I have read by Linda Huber, but it’s safe to say it won’t be my last, oh what a tangled web the author weaves, she certainly can tell a good story, and it certainly wasn’t a predictable tale. Chosen Child has two plots, centred around two families, leading two very different lives. Ella and her husband Rick are desperate to adopt, and Amanda and her husband Gareth are expecting their second child, what’s so tangled about that? I hear you ask, well without giving away any spoilers this is a story that gets more complex and tangled with each chapter you read. Chosen Child is a cleverly woven psychological suspense novel and within a couple of chapters I was so caught up in the story, I struggled to put it down.
The characters in Chosen Child are very memorable, the author has created characters with real depth, some of them possess traits that aren’t particularly likeable and I found my feelings for these character fluctuated throughout this novel. I certainly experienced a wide array of emotions as the novel weaved its web, at times I wanted to scream at the way some of the characters behaved. The situations the characters found themselves in and the they went about things highlight the lengths people will go to, to protect themselves, and it doesn’t make for a pretty read.
I thought I had guessed how the Chosen Child would pan out, but boy was I wrong, the plot has so many twist and turns, it was impossible to second guess where the plot was leading. I really was impressed by the way the two plots collide together in a spectacular fashion, making for an unmissable read. The air of tension begins within the first couple of chapters and maintains the pace all the way through this well crafted story. Chosen Child is a cleverly woven psychological thriller which involves lies, secrets, murder and deception. Dark and at times disturbing, I would highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy a gripping psychological book.
My thanks to the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review
I've never read any novels by Linda Huber before but I fell in love with this cover and I was delighted when the author offered me a copy for review.
Chosen Child is a cleverly woven psychological suspense novel and I was soon caught up in the story.
Ella and Rick are hoping to adopt a child but despite agreeing that they would look for a baby boy, Ella finds herself falling for a six year old girl called Soraya at an adoption party.
The other key character is Amanda, mother to eighteen month old Jaden. Unhappily married to Gareth she embarks on an affair with James but when she finds out she's pregnant and Gareth goes missing she doesn't know where to turn.
It's not long before we discover a connection between the characters and during a moment of madness tragedy strikes and it has destructive ramifications. What follows is a tale of deceit and blackmail which highlights one man's cowardice and turns two innocent women into victims and threatens a young girl's chances of her forever home.
Linda Huber has written a fabulous book with characters that are always believable and it's very easy to feel sympathy for both Amanda and Ella at different points in the book. It's a clever novel full of twists and turns that kept me captivated right up to the last page. If you enjoy a good thriller then I highly recommend that you get yourself a copy of this book. As I said at the beginning of this review, I had never read anything by this author before but this is about to change as I've just found myself another favourite author and I'll be adding her previous books to my TBR pile very soon.
With kind thanks to author Linda Huber for the review copy.
I enjoyed this novel although I did think it was a little far fetched. Too many convenient coincidences and I didn't buy the ending with no resolution to the police investigation. Despite that, I did get drawn into the story and the characters. A relatively good page turner.
It started off quite promising. I totally did not see the big twist coming and couldn't wait to see how it all panned out. It ended up being so repetitive (if I had to read about grey eyes one more time!) and the ending was a disappointment.
My daughter and her husband adopted their children – so the idea of an adoption party was not new to me (and never experienced by my daughter) but when I heard of them it did make me stop and really think. Think about the effect on the children and the dilemma of prospective adopters and most uncomfortable the thought of the children as a commodity to select. But that is just me.
So Rick and Ella attend an adoption party and they have pretty much made up their mind that they want a little white boy with no health issues or problems. Then Ella falls in love with a 6/7 year old little girl, Soraya. Straight away a problem presents itself – but Rick thinks OK we can have a boy next time. Two alarm bells start ringing – Is Rick really committed to this child, and secondly there is a shadow of a doubt about Soraya being a problem, wilful child.
We are then introduced to Amanda and Gareth and their baby son Jaden. Oh, did I mention that Amanda is somewhat bored with her life and is currently having an affair with James? At this point I could not make a connection between the two couples, but very quickly it all becomes apparent. What unfolds is the perfect mixture for a psychological thriller: lies, secrets, deceit, leading to murder, what is effectively child neglect, and yet more death, add a dash of dangerous coastal walks and mysterious goings-on in the shed. Yes! I think that about covers it – but hopefully no spoilers.
Overall I really enjoyed this book, as I have all Linda Huber’s other books. However, there is something that makes me a bit uncomfortable about it and I can’t quite figure out what. Clearly Rick was just plain delusional or perhaps just crazy when considering the decisions he made. But then, he didn’t have the best, lateral thinking lover in Amanda – totally selfish really, and her judgement? That leaves us Gareth – well he is out of it really: and so to Ella. You will have to decide for yourself, I know what I think but can’t explain because of spoilers – suffice it to say she is not the most sympathetic person in the world but that is my view. You will have to read it to find out.
To sum up, a really good book which I have no hesitation in recommending, but I enjoyed the other books I have read by this author much, much more. That said, bring on the next one, please!
I highly recommend this book. I read the whole book in one day! I can't believe it. I forgot to eat, drink and go to the loo as it was so gripping. I just wanted to query something out of interest - why does the author let us know from chapter seven/eight that James is the same person as Rick? This confused me for a long time and I lost track and focus for a while because of this! E.g. I was desperate to know how Rick/James knew Gareth - as their relationship was not mentioned from the start...But it soon made sense after some reflection. It's amazing how the two stories slowly unfold as one and you get to see how the characters came to know each other and how they came to be in each other's lives. I will be reading more from this author. It's unbelievable how a person can write like this! After finishing the book, I had to rest as I felt overwhelmed. Please get this book now!
This wasn't bad. but it certainly didn't tick the boxes of being a psychological suspense story. The author didn't strive to hide the identity of James in the early chapters, and later in the story, when a character is constantly going to the shed, again, no mystery. There were no twists and turns, no misdirection or red herrings, no unreliable narrator. There was no big WOW at the end that shocked me. There was no guesswork. Everything played out exactly as expected so this story was very disappointing to me.
