In this hilarious, romantic comedy, two twenty-something neighbors embark on a zany mission to meet the founder of Starbucks, and in doing so, find each other.
I hesitated to even admit that I read this on here. And I had to explain to my daughter why I was reading a book with this title and she isn't allowed to say the word stupid in our house. I don't recommend this to anyone unless their looking for total mind candy. That being said, there are some very funny parts to this book, including this quote, "yesterday I had a woman ask me what kind of salad dressings we have. I told her we have sesame soy dressing, spicy lime vinaigrette, and blue cheese. she made a face and asked, 'Is that all?' 'Yes,' I told her, 'those are all of our dressings.' 'Don't you have any other dressings?' he says. I mean, what the hell? What does she think? That I'm holding out? I was tempted to say, "No, we actually have an entirely different assortment of dressings that I don't tell people about the first time they ask, because they don't deserve these great secret dressings. But now that you hve proven your worth, I will show you to the VIP room, where the array of salad dressings will dazzle and delight you.'"
This book was comic genius. Told from the alternating point of view of a guy and a girl. He's trying to come up with "The Next Big Thing"...as soon as he thinks of what that might be. She's his seemingly crazy neighbor that's trying to figure out what to do with her life.
Lots of current cultural references. Just plain funny and easy to read.
Pahit kah? Manis kah? Hmmm, sepertinya bittersweet.
I thought the main character "Heaven" was incredibly inconsistent. She was a supposed PR marketing genius, but seemed to have the maturity of a 12-year old. It was like almost two different characters. The author did a terrible job of blending these persona's. Also, Heaven was so annoying, delusional, random and insane. I couldn't stand her and reading about her idiocy bored me to tears. There were only three scenes that made her slightly bearable, but other than those few pages....No Thanks.
Something that made me step outside of the box was having my husband read a chapter aloud. We were on a car trip and I asked (ok, begged him til he agreed) him to read it to me. Hearing the banter between the two characters read out loud was hilarious - not in a good way. The characters sounded so unbelievably stupid, I felt like I was over-hearing two elementary school kids pick on each other.
I was expecting a much funnier book. I've been following her on Twitter for awhile, and her tweets are beyond hilarious. This is the reason I wanted to check out her book (s). I was expecting some of that humor to come through in her work. There were a few hilarious scenes, I can tell the author is talented....It just didn't work for me....
After having a so-so reaction to Caprice Crane's other novel, Forget About It, I was wary of reading this one, but here I am, giving it 5 freaking stars. Color me pleasantly surprised.
The prose switches between the two characters, Heaven and Brady, chapter-by-chapter. I don't normally enjoy this type of format, but Crane makes it work by skipping the doldrum "this is my life" explanation crap and jumping right into the essence of the characters - how they speak. I'm a big believer of dialogue in writing and how it can reveal so much more about a character rather than having a narrator explain it (it's the whole SHOW DON'T TELL thing, you see?) and this novel does that brilliantly - without having much dialogue, even. Seeing as it's written in present tense, each chapter is explaining its leg of events in the character's voice (ooh, fancy English major word!) which gives us a far clearer picture of who they are than most novels, which usually only get a good character going by chapter three or so. This novel? Right off the bat.
It's witty and QUIRKY and FUN. Brady is the kind of guy I'd have a major crush on, and Heaven is exactly the type of best friend I've always wanted (right after I read Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, you BET I made up a fictional lifelong best friend, and it was pretty much Heaven Albright to a tee). The plot moves along smoothly and I was NEVER bored, and just, wow. Tons of awesome pop-culture references (at one point they attend a memorial service for Kurt Cobain in Seattle, AHH!) and banter galore. Pretty much the exact kind of book that I love to pieces; the kind of book I hope to write someday.
Awesome read. Totally worth it - and aren't I glad I gave Caprice Crane another shot?
I probably would have enjoyed this if I hadn't been so distracted by the language used that adds nothing to the plot. I'm not talking about words like fuck or shit, because the author uses those and I don't care at all. I'm talking about the use of words like fag and retard as insults that the protagonists use. Honestly? Is the author really that obtuse?
The heroine also speaks in ways that show that she clearly thinks that she is above her bosses because they have chosen to work in the service industry. Meanwhile, we get at least 60 extra pages all about how she's a terrible employee. Guess what? One of those anecdotes was enough to fire her. I didn't need to read 12 separate anecdotes interspersed with obnoxious monologues about how obnoxious her customers were.
I also really didn't need the entire chapter devoted to a confrontation between the hero and a stranger regarding the stranger being overweight. Does the author not seem to realize that some of her readers may be fat? And that a woman being fat shouldn't be the punchline? Did it further the plot? No. Did it cause me to further dislike the static protagonist? Yes.
Overall, I wish I hadn't finished this. I kept on thinking "Oh, this is just characterization that is meant to show that these two people are dynamic and will change over the course of the novel." But it wasn't. The two main characters are awful people, they remain awful, and then they get a happy ending (although a haphazardly written, nauseatingly cliche one). I doubt I'll be reading anything else by this author.
Well, I finally finished it. Honestly, I can see why some people find this book great and hilarious. I don't know if maybe I'm just not very into contemporary right now, but I had such a hard time going through the book-- especially at the beginning! I mean seriously, what is up with Heaven?
Somewhere in the latter-middle part, when my mind finally accepted the concept that is Heaven, the story became a little bit more readable for me although Brady did have some of his moments too.
After they get past the initial 'wtf are you doing in my apartment should I call the cops' stage and become friends, the dynamic between Heaven and Brady was hilarious to read,
Verdict: If you have the will to get past the wtf-ery that is Heaven, I think it is possible to enjoy this book as a light, funny, romantic read.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
What a refreshing, fun read. I laughed out loud more times than I could count while reading, and it was just what I needed.
The voice of both Brady and Heaven were so hilariously unique, and their senses of humor were completely in line with mine, hence all the cackling that happened. I do so love a good narrative, especially one that can artfully sprinkle pop culture references throughout, and this one succeeded in both.
A couple things made me knock this down from 5 stars: 1) Parts of the book seemed to drag. There were times when I wanted to smack Brady and/or Heaven upside the head and tell them to get their shit together already! 2) There were small details that were inconsistent, where all of the sudden Heaven knew something about Brady that he hadn't previously disclosed, or vice versa. A lot of times, I was scratching my head wondering if I'd missed a page (or ten). And 3) The ending was cute, but totally OOC to me.
All in all, though, this was a fun, unique, refreshing read. One that I'll definitely put on my forever-reread list.
More like: (3 + 1) stars, [that 1 star being for all the times it made me laugh the hardest]
When I started I had really really super-duper high hopes for Stupid and Contagious (never a good thing that, right?) so yeah I was a tiny bit disappointed.
To be honest I loved Heaven and Brady. Yup, loved them! The book was like that silly-funny book, still so much meaningful. I sure as hell liked the book. Though I am going to agree that just as I thought in Significance by Shelly Crane, I thought there were a few scenes that were kinda unnecessary and could've been done without. Still, as I keep saying the book as a whole was brilliant. I'm going with 4-stars-ish. Read it! Its a comical journey at the very least. (Some scenes I was laughing my ass out. THAT I love.)
This is the worst book I've ever read. It may have struck me as particularly terrible because I usually give books like this such a wide berth, I only picked this one up because it was in my house. Everything about it annoyed the hell out of me. If you want yet another completely idiotic "Hipster Boy meets Manic Pixie Dream Girl" story with a smattering of music references, by all means read this book. If you want to read something actually good, run away as fast as you can.
P.S. Blinded by the Light was written by Bruce Springsteen, not Manfred Mann.
I feel stupid and contagious Here we are now, entertain us..
(lirik bos-jadi nambah 1*)
Hello, hello, hello, hello, how low? Hello, hello, hello, hello, how low? Hello, hello, hello, hello, how low? I was so sure that I was going to give this book 3-4 stars. It was stupid, so very stupid, but it was a funny/amusing stupid and I was certainly amused by these insane main characters. And then the author decided that it was entirely appropriate to dedicate an entire chapter to how disgusting and awful it was to have to sit next to an obese woman on the plane, who then had the nerve to breast feed her two month old infant on the plane. To give you an idea of how awful this chapter was, here's a quote regarding this passage: "And I don't care how hungry little Henry is. Can't he wait two hours to eat. No, of course he can't. What - *wait* to *eat*? That's a concept his mother certainly never seems to have wrapped her head around." Actually, now that I'm back in this section, here's another part that the author thought would be "witty": "God this is a tight squeeze,' she continues. Does she really need to keep bringing this up? The Suez Canal would be a tight squeeze for you, lady!" In addition to this chapter, the main characters also seem to think it's fine to use the word "retarded" quite often. The book was ridiculous, and the beginning was better and made me laugh, but I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. There are plenty of mindless-amusing books out there that aren't so callous.
The is Caprice Crane's debut novel and the second of hers that I have read. It's not usual to find great first books and I'm glad to say I liked this one as much as her second book.
Heaven and Brady are next door neighbors. It's dislike at first sight, even though they dislike each other even before they meet for the first time! Heaven works in public relations and she's good at what she does. Unfortunately she has a low bs meter and no sense of personal boundaries. You're either left laughing at her antics or wincing because she's gone too far. Brady owns his own music label, but has yet to sign an act. He's trying to get away from his psycho ex Sarah. Brady's got his own neurosis which we get to see in the chapters from his point of view. Both are flawed, which makes them work so well as a couple, even if they can't see it.
I loved how both Heaven and Brady's thoughts and feelings were expressed. It was a surefire way to get us intimated with the characters and situations. It was also a breath of fresh air to have the girl be the more attractive of the two and have the guy be an average Joe, sort of like a reversal of Cinderella.
Caprice Crane has a new book coming out this summer and I'm eagerly awaiting it's release!
Heaven has lost her job as a PR rep and now a waitress trying to make ends meet and stay happy with her life. Brady just got out of a bad relationship and is struggling trying to make his record label work, and he just moved into next to Heaven. With mis-delivered mail that Heaven takes it upon herself to open for Brady their friendship starts and blossoms into what seems to be a mutual annoyance friendship that grows.
I enjoyed this book. Which seems different from most of the reviews I look at on it people seem to love or hate it. I don't fall on either side. I think it was a decent book to read, but it was a bit light and fluffy. I have read worse book and I have read better books. The characters were kind of self centered and annoying at times, but by the end I liked seeing them grow. I felt like the characters weren't very deep and could have been deeper, but it was ok I could still relate to them some. Overall, a book I am glad I read but probably won't go back and read again.
By themselves, Heaven and Brady are boring and a bit whiny. Together, they are hilarious. Heaven is a psycho. I mean, who opens someone else's mail? She's nuts but it provided me with so much entertainment I can't bear to bitch about it. Unpredictability is high on my list of heroine values and Heaven has got it in spades. She is so crazy. She's the epitome of sweet and sour. Brady sees Heaven as the annoying, hyperactive neighbour. She's kind of his pet that he grows fond of. This author is not politically correct, she freely expresses prejudices and stereotypes. Sometimes it was over the top and other times it hit the spot.
Oh, well, IT WAS AWESOME! I never thought that I'll like a chic-lit book so much, but this one was amazing! Seriously! Still don't trust me? Open it and read (please read more than 30 pages because at first I was like "WTF is this?")
Got the book a long time ago, from my favourite aunt (it was a Christmas gift) and she told me that she picked it because it was just like me "stupid and... contagious"!
Apparently a lot has changed in the last 15 years. Since this book was written it’s no longer appropriate to use the “r”, the “f” word, or the “n” word. It also isn’t okay to make fun of people for being fat, from another country or breastfeeding. This book was offensive every couple of chapters. So much so it was hard to appreciate the storyline.
So, I didn't like this book. Shortly after starting it I brought out a notebook and started writing down all the things that were irritating me, and tried to come up with two lists; good and bad. Spoilers ahoy!
All in all, there was a lot more that I didn't like than what I did like. If you look past all the annoying things, it was a moderately ok book that had some good parts, but I would probably not recommend it since there are MUCH better stories out there.
Very readable and breezy but it's a pretty typical rom-com formula. It was very easy to picture both leads as Hollywood stars because it was almost certainly written with an eventual screenplay in mind.
The comedy is very forced-otherwise rational people do very stupid things in order to create "OMG" moments that never feel believable and that seldom build to a real pay off.
One thing that made the book readable was that it is aimed squarely at my generation. The novel was published in 2006 and takes place in 2004. The movie and popular music references are perfect for that time. One thing that stood out as the pages went along is that even though this story is only a decade and a half old, it feels like a very different time. There are no smart phones and the characters rarely communicate by text message. The only references to social media are a flaky character mentioning that she has both a Friendster and a MySpace account.
I love Caprice Crane. I do. She is one of the funniest people ever. She shouldn’t be a writer, she should be a comedian. She totally missed her calling. But, you know, I’m sorta glad she IS a writer because I love her books. I read Forget About It a while back and pre-ordered With A Little Luck as soon as I saw it online and I absolutely loved it. So with Stupid and Contagious, her debut novel on my shelf, I had to read it. Because it sounded ridiculous. In the most nicest of ways. And it was ridiculous. In the most nicest of ways.
To adequately explain Stupid and Contagious, I give you the lines from the back cover: “Heaven’s in hell. And Brady just moved in. So what happens when an outcast and an oddball get together to take on the world?” That sums up the novel perfectly. Stupid and Contagious is one of the funniest most stupid books I’ve ever read. It was perfect in its stupidity and its genius. If I thought Caprice Crane should have been knighted for her previous books then Stupid and Contagious makes it a definite because it’s awesome. It’s not a run-of-the-mill Chick Lit novel and Heaven and Brady are thisclose to possibly needing to be committed, in a mental institute, I mean. But that’s the genius of the book, because despite being slightly nuts, Heaven and Brady are the best characters ever.
Music is a big, big part of the book, huge. I mean there are so many bands name-checked, so many I’ve never heard of, and Crane really knows her music. There should seriously have been a soundtrack at the end of the book so that we could download all the awesome songs both Heaven and Brady love. Their relationship is nuts and is what pushes the book. It takes a while – almost 100 pages before Heaven and Brady actually meet (insert sad face here) but from then on it’s like the book is on fire. It just comes into its own as Brady thinks Heaven is a total nutter and Heaven likes to read Brady’s mail. And steal his money. And give her opinion on things Brady doesn’t want an opinion on. But, eventually, they do sort of come around to each other. So it’s all good and it just made the book even better because their bantering was just so fun to read.
The alternating narrative makes the book really hard to put down because you just want to read one more page – you want to see the two react to each other, you want to see what they’re going to do next and it works fantastically. Why this isn’t a film already is beyond me. Crane is a script-writer and of her four novels, the three I’ve read can all easily be movies. They should be movies, frankly. It’s a crime they’re not and Stupid and Contagious should be a movie. Or a TV show. The back-and-forth nature of the narrative was brilliant and it meant we got to see everything Brady and Heaven thought and I felt we really got to know them and I was so sad to reach the end because I loved them in the end, quirks, foibles and all.
Stupid and Contagious is rather contagious. I know that’s not a very flattering word, but once Heaven and Brady meet it’s as if there’s nothing more important than finishing the book. It’s electric and I raced through it. I adored their chemistry and loved their fights and spats and throwdowns. I loved that Heaven wasn’t bothered about reading someone else’s mail and that Brady got so frustrated by it, it was just so funny. I’d hugely recommend Stupid and Contagious, I absolutely loved it. I loved that it was different to most Chick Lit, that Caprice made her characters so weird but so loveable, too. I can’t wait to read the only other Crane book I haven’t read, A Family Affair, I am officially hopping on board the Caprice Crane fan club and you really should, too.
Stupid and Contagious is probably one of the funniest books I've read in quite a while. I swear for the first third of the book this was me
Heaven and Brady are neighbors. Brady has just moved in and Heaven has just recently lost her job. I'm finding it hard to put into words just how different these characters are.
Heaven has it in her head that if she isn't married by the age of 27 she's probably going to die... and Brady, well, he's definitely not looking to get married at all. He's just ended a relationship with his psycho ex. Their first actual face-to-face encounter involves Heaven opening his mail and 'borrowing' the ten dollars his grandma sent him so you can only imagine where it goes from there.
"I'm sorry, I'm just a little shocked. You opened my mail and stole money from it?"
and then
"You're it aren't you?" He says. "You're my karmic punishment for some bad thing I did."
Heaven... she's so incredibly neurotic it's amusing. She's not stupid though. And I found that I liked her... a lot. She has no sense of personal boundaries and it makes for some very funny situations.
"I've made two lists in my life that give a little insight into who I am. Not much, but a little. One list is the "people I hate " list. The other is the "people who are not invited to my funeral" list."
That's how you first meet Heaven and couldn't help but laugh at her reasoning for the two lists.
But I think I laughed the hardest when I was reading Brady's chapters. I don't know if it's just the idea of being inside this guys head and seeing him interact with him friends and Heaven but I think that Crane wrote this guy perfectly.
"Because when all is said and done, were there a pair of breasts and a taut naked stomach staring me in the face, I'd gladly ride that toboggan straight back down to hell."
Brady has his own record company and he's an inventor - he is always trying to think of the next big thing and when we meet him, he's just come up with Cinnamilk.
From the first time Brady and Heaven meet they instantly dislike each other, but their relationship evolves gradually and believable... even though some of what happens is a bit of a stretch.
Why did I give it 4 stars instead of 5 you ask? I think personally the ending seemed a bit out of character. I won't tell you what it was, you'll just have to read.
Overall, I really, really enjoyed this book. It's definitely just an enjoyable story. Something that will make you smile and laugh and quite possibly cackle like a weirdo while reading. Give it a read and I know I'll be putting Caprice Crane on my authors to watch list. Can't wait for more from her!
I was extremely surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Other than Sophie Kinsella, I've never been able to stomach other chick lit books because they lacked the magic Kinsella weaved in her stories. The book alternates between the POVs of the two main charcters Heaven and Brady. The story begins with Brady being kicked out of his flat by his psychotic ex, Sarah and moves next door to Heaven. Hilarity results with Brady yelling in his flat to test the echo and Heaven opening his mail. But through a series of events, they finally end up together. I like to think of it as a more cynical and sarcastic version of Sophie Kinsella. The characters swear more and are more sardonic than silly. Heaven's not perfect but her heart's in the right place. She helped out Brady when his pshcyo ex came a knockin' and adopted Strummer(a dog) when she found him abandoned at a lamp post.
Brady's a bit of a jerk but he's a funny and witty jerk with a soft streak so I'll forgive him.(I have a thing for witty guys, so sue me) He genuinely cares for the band he's trying to sign to his label. I especially love the part when he says(to himself) that he wants to protect Heaven and cheer her up.
Stupid and Contagious is definitely re-read material and not just for chick lit lovers.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
