Pet Shop of Horror revolves around a magical pet shop in Chinatown that just happens to sell pet’s that aren’t like your everyday pet. Each volume is divided into a chapters and each chapter tells a single story of an encounter with this pet shop. Some end up happy while others not so much.
In the 5th installment we are given a little more into the life of Count D as well as a insight into Detective Leon. The stories involve a congressman intent on solidifying his seat as future president. A runaway royal cat with ties to the future leader of a country. A dancer who is struggling with the fact that the man she loves has chosen another changing her future forever. Leon also brings his younger brother to the count to watch him as he has become his guardian. I like the new twist of Chris who’s joined the counts world.
I’m hooked on Pet Shop of Horrors it’s written as a series of short stories which have a larger story surrounding them. It’s this creepy concept of a pet shop that happens to not sell traditional pets. Each of the pets really fits into the owner life giving them exactly what they needed at that point in their life and some may not end happy ever after. I have to admit I enjoyed the concept it’s unique and fascinating I had a hard time putting it down because I wanted to know what would happen next. I’m anxious to read the next book so we can learn more about the pet shop but to see what comes out it’s door next. While it may not be a super popular one it’s worth checking out the chapters are perfect for a quick little way to break up the day or just binge reading.

The violence and peril represented by the pet shop intensified in this first story, only to have Count D, his animals, and D’s relationship with Leon take on a new dimension when Leon leaves his silent little brother, Chris, in the Count’s care. Chris becomes a participant within the world within the pet shop, giving it a new flavour of being a wonderland as well as peril. The transformation of the story and the characters continues in the next story when Count D explodes into an almost domestic tirade at the state of Leon’s apartment and Chris is the one who brings a new pet to Count D’s door. Neither the shop nor its owner have lost any of their magic, mystery, or menace, something that’s apparent in the final story, where Count D and his shop granted a talented and famous ballet dancer’s darkest desire.
On one hand, Leon reveals a hint of his true feelings for D in trusting his little brother to the Count’s care. D shows a softer side in welcoming Chris, as do the pets in the shop. It’s a sign, perhaps, of how special Leon has become to him that D is not only helping Leon look after his little brother, but doing what he can to encourage their bond. Chris’s condition, how he sees the pets, interacts with them, and what he learns from the Count give the shop a new dimension, showing how this special place can appear in the eyes of the innocent, transforming it into a place of wonder rather than horror. The horror still awaits those who come seeking it, which is illustrated with a fairy tale magic in the last story. For depicting all of this in a strikingly attractive art style which draws on detailed, intricate costumes, I give this four stars.

Pet Shop of Horrors is a manga by Matsuri Akino. It is set in the heart of Chinatown. Enter Count D's pet shop, a place where you can find a multitude of pets. These pets can range from cats and dogs to the most exotic, but they often will take a form to match a person's deepest desires. The mysterious man running the shop will be willing to sell you these animals, but under contract. These contracts often have three terms, varying with each individual pet. If any of these circumstances are broken, the pet shop is in no way, shape, or form, responsible for the consequences that would result.
This series is certainly a unique read. Each chapter often focuses on a different customer, so the series has an episode like feel to it. In each of these chapters, however, there is a sub plot that always occurs. This subplot is actually part of the main story, so it's suggested that you pay attention to it. Most of these stories can turn out somewhat messy, but are they happy or sad endings? No one can even tell. This story is about human nature itself, with a good amount of environmentalism hidden in there too.

June 1, 2015I never get tired of Count D and his menagerie in his mysterious little shop in Chinatown! I was thrilled with the Kirin, such a cool mythical being! Chris was a great addition to the cast of characters, he's like Leon, but without the cliche obnoxious idiot-American airs that Leon wears so well. I really enjoy the dynamic between Count D and Leon, they've got the exasperated love-hate relationship an old married couple, but with all the mystery and passion of a new couple before they've gotten intimate (yeah, I'm pretty sure there's sexual tension there, and you won't convince me otherwise!). I love that Count D is afraid of children and was horrified by the mess in Leon's apartment. "I've seen some disturbing things but nothing as terrifying as this apartment!" Great volume all the way around, I can't wait to read more!

The enjoyment of this volume was a bit less compared to the previous ones. Some of the stories did not have such an effect, however, Chris was introduced and I am really curious how his character will develop.
Count D's "Please do not lump my animals together with a human! And I don't like children" was the highlight. So true your highness.

In this volume, we get introduced to the true game changer of the series: Chris Orcott, Leon's younger (much, much younger) brother. His introduction is rather abrupt, with Leon dropping him off with D to babysit while he goes to work. (Which is another show of just how close they've become — he's trusting his younger brother to someone he still professes to want to see behind bars.) Chris has his own trauma and hasn't spoken since he was informed, in a rather rude and callous manner, that he was adopted and that his mother died in childbirth with him. Interestingly enough, unlike his brother, he sees the pets in D's shop as human. And though he cannot speak verbally, he's able to mentally communicate with everyone in the shop, including his brother by the end of the volume.
But, perhaps what's most interesting, is that D takes the child with some complaint, but ultimately begins to serve in a pseudo-parent role. Teaching Chris about the animals, helping him to understand his brother (and helping his brother understand him), and by the end of the volume, you can see that D is taken with the kid.
Pet-wise, we've got the Kirin, who is given to a politician who wants to become president, although the Kirin finds his aide, Kelly, to be the worthy one.
We've also got a cat who has been tasked with choosing the royal heir to a country, but runs away because she feels as though the one she chose is no different than his siblings.
And, lastly, birds who show a prima ballerina that deep down, she still struggles with feelings of being inadequate and that her partner choosing another to dance the part of Odette/Odile at a showcase has rung the bell of decline.

Том получился отличным, в основном благодаря появлению нового персонажа – младшего братца детектива, бесцеремонно оставленного на попечении у графа Ди. К семейным перипетиям (что усугубляются тем, что у старшего брата опасная работа и навыки общения находятся на уровне детсада) добавляется немота мальца, вызванная на этот раз не сверхъестественными событиями. Неудивительно, что в мире графа он чувствует себя уютнее, чем за его пределами.
Спроси меня о деталях каждой главы и клиентах Ди – я мало что вспомню. Зато семейная тема затмевает все возможные сюжетные повороты в духе «и вообще все дело в благовониях». Иногда самая прелесть – в мелочах вроде подколок графа, совместных чаепитиях, кусающихся баранах (1 шт.), и общей атмосфере взаимопонимания в такой разношерстной компании. Блондинчик по-прежнему многого не видит (=не хочет видеть), а граф верен своей натуре и подталкивает клиентов к пропасти. Пускай это никогда не заканчивается :)

Also it was funny but I noticed that in this volume the “owners” of the animals bought never had a specific list or rules (in their contract) to follow like in previous volumes they made an important impact on the story.

Nothing much to say here. The series has been going steadily downhill for me. I would be fine with just one story I really loved, but none of the recent stories have resonated with me like those in the first volume.

The chapter, Day Nursery, made me tear up. Chris, Leon's little brother, is introduced, and I can't help but feel so bad for the kid. I can't imagine how he must feel. Though I will always love how D reacts to breaking a nail.

I loved the stories in this one. The gruesome levels were low but the plot was off the chart.
Also, seeing more of Leon's background and his family was really sweet. I liked Chris as a character.

Siento cada vez mas que el titulo de este manga deberia ser "Cuidado con lo que deseas" en lugar de "pet shop of horrors". Está mas que claro que al conde no le interesa mucho la humanidad sino mas bien todos sus aniimales y criaturas, al punto que siento que ademas de ser un manga inclusivo con toda la comunidad lgbt, tambien incluyen los fetiches tipo zoofilia... a veces es un poco turbio jajaja pero sigo bancando al Conde D.
Y otra cosa que me encanta es que el detective por fin tiene historia y un poco de trasfondo. Al menos parece un poco mas humano ahora saben? Que tenga un hermano menor y que participe en la historia de alguna manera me agrada.
Bueno, como siempre historias turbias no faltan, asi que las criaturas mas extrañas son parte de un trasfondo un poco particular. Algo que vengo apreciando desde el tomo 1 es que se hace un catalogo de todas las criaturas que aparecen al final como para que uno tenga idea de que es lo que vio, muy lindo detalle que no mencione hasta ahora pero me agrada bastante

Edición argentina. Quinto y último tomo publicado a la fecha. Supuestamente la iba a continuar otra editorial tras el cese de actividades de Camelot Mikoshi, pero años después de hecho el anuncio (y teniendo en cuenta cuál es la editorial que supuestamente iba a hacerse cargo de continuarla), resulta difícil creer que se concrete.

I'm not sure why, but it was a little hard for me to get into this one. I still enjoyed it, especially with the addition of little Chris. I'm really interested to see what happens with him.
I did enjoy the very last story, plainly because I'm a dancer. I was kind of hoping it would be so stereotypical, but oh well.

I'm losing interest in this manga. 5 volumes in and it's still the same old, same old spiel, short stories in which Count D and Leon have only short stints and it's all about the characters who come to buy an animal in Count D's shop. And I should care about them why? It's boring :(

Chris is introduced! He adds a lot to the series and allows us to see yet another side to Count D. It also continues Leon's amusing dual opinion of the count: "I know you're a murderer. I'm going to lock you up. Can you watch my brother by the way?" And of course there is tea.
