Many books have been written about the illustrious career of pop superstar Prince, but none was ever written by a member of his band. In this first-hand, eyewitness account of the meteoric rise of this pop icon and his early days, original Prince guitarist Dez Dickerson tells his story. As a man who was on the inside from Prince's legendary early concerts all the way to his massive breakthrough with "1999", Dez has a story to tell that has yet to be told. Tracing Dez's involvement with the band from his first audition in 1978 until his departure in 1983, My Time With Prince - Confessions of a Former Revolutionary contains never before printed personal insights from the man who was there. This book puts a more personal face on a subject that has previously been covered primarily in documentary form. Also included are never before-published photos from Dez's private collection. This is a glimpse into his personal scrapbook. My Time With Prince - Confessions Of A Former Revolutionary is a fresh look at a familiar subject from a new perspective-through the eyes of a man who was in the middle of it all. **Include your name to get a personalized autographed copy by Dez himself!
No one can document the journey in Prince's purple world more than a keyplayer himself. This was an interesting read. Dez divulged more than what I thought he would. Some of the adventures the band had were hilarious. Dex writes in a way that attracts and engages you. It was like getting information from a friend. I did sense a bit of resentment towards Prince and some animosity towards Vanity, but on a whole I think he tried to be respectful to Prince when he wrote this in 2003. A must read for all Prince fans.
I usually don't rate bios but this really wasn't a true bio. So I will rate based on writing style. I did appreciate that he did not "dish dirt" but I found the way and many word choices he used interfered with what was his real voice. I didn't have a feel for him at all. I agree with another reviewer that it would have been much more interesting if he had let someone interview and guide him. He said his wife encouraged him to write the book. It was published in 2003. Saw two blurbs on the net that she filed for divorce in 2007. He has since remarried and had a child with his new wife. Neither here nor there but interesting.
A rare treat: one of Prince's former band members writing an autobiography. While the book contains interesting insights and stories, I could not help feeling that it would have been a far stronger book if Dez Dickerson had allowed an outsider to interview him, guide him, ask him about certain events.
